A Scotsman in DC wearing a kilt with a southwestern US bolo tie. I love it! Should have worn your Stetson hat to complete the look, Shaun! Safe travels..
So, a bit of navigation advice: In downtown DC, the numbered streets run north-south, the letter streets run east-west. The streets named after the states run diagonally. If you use the Washington Monument as your focal point, the Capitol is to the east, the White House is to the north, and the Lincoln Memorial is to the west. The Tidal Basin, where the Jefferson, FDR and MLK memorials is to the southwest of the Washington monument. The Smithsonians line the Mall between the Capitol and the Washington Monument.
I am from NY. It is so nice seeing you back in the states. Washington DC is an amazing place to visit. You walked in the area that is called the National Mall. It is a long stretch you can walk that has memorials all along it. Either side has museums that are free to visit 7 days a week. DC is a must place to visit when you have more time. Behind the Lincoln Memorial is the Potomac River. Arlington Memorial Bridge takes you to Arlington National Cemetery. Its a must see when you can. You have to go see the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. Spring time the Cherry trees are in bloom and its beautiful. Just know its also the top time for visitors and the whole place is very crowded. You need reservations early because it all fills up quickly. Safe travels and enjoy your time in the states!
It's great to have you guys both visit a historic part of the USA. I hope y'all will have a wonderful time here. Edit: Hi from San Antonio 63° F I love your bolo! Remember your Scottish accent will open a lot of doors for you and Teka. People love it.
You're in my neighborhood. You should come to the house for some fresh crab cakes. I spent 30 years serving in the US Marine Band....the White House band.
Did you know when you look at the reverse side of the American penny, there’s a teeny tiny Abraham Lincoln statue inside the teeny tiny Lincoln memorial?
The big ornate hotel building (at 20:22) is the legendary Hay-Adams Hotel. Named after John Hay, Lincoln's personal secretary and Secretary of State under two presidents. And Henry Adams who was descendant of presidents John Adams (second president 1797) and John Quincy Adams (sixth president 1825). Hotel was built on the site of their homes and contains historic details such as wood paneling from John Hay home. Over the years the hotel has been an important meeting place for historical figures (I had lunch there 😝). Seriously, from Theodore Roosevelt (26 president 1901) to Mark Twain.
I'm glad the rain let up and the weather stayed mild for you! That was quite the livestream. (Watching from just up the road in DC.) Here to repeat my recommendation to go to Reading Terminal Market when you're in Philly and EAT ALL THE THINGS.
The yearly White House ornament are an awesome souvenir. I have them dated back to 1997. There are several Smithsonian museums. The National Air and Space Museum is cool. They take a lot of time to go through. The National Archives Museum has our Declaration Of Independence and Bill of Rights. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier especially when they do the changing of the guard is powerful. Have fun! 🇺🇸🏴
It’s funny, the one time I catch you during a live stream is when you’re 3 miles south of my house! Actually considered running down and bringing you a beer, but figured that might be a bit creepy. Have fun while you’re in town and check out Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Library of Congress, many of the museums around the Washington Mall, such as the Congressional Archives, the Smithsonian, my, favorites, the Hirshorn Art Gallery, Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian. And if you can, try to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia, just over the bridge. Perhaps there is a tour bus to take you there. I love D.C. Have fun! ❤
With all its faults and problems, I love my country. It makes me so happy to see it through your eyes and know that yall love it. I would love to visit Scotland but I am afraid my traveling days are done. Have fun visiting this glorious country.
That was a great start to the video! Love seeing you walking in your kilt in front of the White House! That little bit of unexpected gave me a great big smile! Thanks! And Happy Holidays!
When I see President Lincoln I remember the photos taken of him when he was elected, and photos of him just before his death, and it seemed he gave his actual flesh to the preservation of the country. Probably the man I respect most in all of history. Hope so much I can stand there some day...
I agree with you. I think magnates are the perfect souvenir. It shows you were there but doesn't take up much space. Plus, unlike clothing items like hats or shirts, a magnate will last forever
Welcome back to the U.S., Shaun! D.C. is one of my favorite places to visit, and I never get tired of it. When you can, plan a slightly longer trip so you can take in even more. Even better, plan it during the Cherry Blossom Festival, which in 2023 runs from 20 March-16 April. D.C. is never more beautiful than when the Cherry trees are in bloom. Allocate an entire day to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural history, and at least a morning or afternoon to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. You will not be disappointed. Arlington National Cemetary and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as the US Marine Corps War Memorial are likewise worth seeing. You were very, very near the Vietnam War and Korean War Memorials while at the Lincoln Memorial. Maybe not to your tastes, but I never go to D.C. without visiting those. In any case, hope you get to come back soon!
I think the Lincoln Memorial at the end of the mall is pretty cool. The mall is a long walkway from the Washinton memorial- large pillar- to the Lincoln Mem. Its a big statue of Linc sitting on a huge chair, but all lit up
Happy Thanksgiving to you too. Glad you did a live video. Good to see your videos close to the time you were actually there. It's great to see how much you and Tekka enjoy visiting. In August 2011 the Washington Monument was damaged and needed to be repaired due to Hurricane Irene and a 5.8 Earthquake in Virginia that was felt throughout many states. The fault lines in the Northeast are old and brittle so they are easily felt. There were a lot of aftershock also. It was between $200-$300 million dollars to fix the damage.
I've done the D.C. tour...visited lots of memorials, the capitol building, and the Smithsonian museum. Loved the video, and your respect is appreciated. Cheers from Arizona.
Loved this. I live in St. Pete Florida now, but I grew up in DC. I miss everything but the weather and the traffic. It's a great city when you know where to go.
Welcome back to US Shaun & Teka! We were in DC this past summer. So many things to see and do! Lincoln memorial was very emotional 💔Out first president- George Washington’s Mount Vernon was fun to visit. We never made it to Arlington Cemetary and I regret it! :( hopefully you get to go and experience as much as you can- Have a great time!🇺🇸
So sorry I missed your live stream; I was snoozing. But my wife watched. Happy to see you back in the states. The Mall in DC is so beautiful at night. We visited about 20 years ago on a trip from Florida. Drove straight through; arrived at about 3:30 in the morning, and proceeded to walk around the mall shooting long exposure photos of the memorials. I was nervous at first, then I saw a guy off in the distance with a dog. He was going from trash can to trash can. I then suspected he was probably some form of law enforcement with a bomb sniffing dog. Realized I was probably in one of the safest places on earth, on multiple security cameras, and that if I saw one guard, there were probably more that I didn't see.
Our Capitol is beautiful. I'm glad you had the opportunity to visit. The architect who designed the way the city was arranged was the same man who designed Paris. You'll see the similarities if you look at maps. I'm from California. Originally Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Unique footage, this time of night. The dark and moody sky shining through the trees when you were on the way up to the Washinton Monument was especially beautiful. I love getting a different perspective. Although I think the monuments and memorials are beautiful and educational, your sense of reverence and wonder is a revelation. At home sick, I finally got to watch this whole vid. P.S. I think bolos and kilts are the perfect combo. 😋 Kind of tribal, all around. Hope no-one shoots me (figuratively) for saying that.
Loved your night ramble. Don't let the Negative Nellies influence you. The areas where you are going to visit are perfectly safe. Millions of tourists visit Washington each year, and it's all good. Washington is a lovely city to walk around, and it has a good Metro or subway that can get you around. Lots of interesting public buildings and museums to visit around or near the Mall, and most of them are free. Make sure to go to the part of the city called Georgetown. Go to the part of the city where all of the foreign embassies are, and that's a fun place to walk around. I think it's called Embassy Row. If you're interested, you are very close to Mount Vernon, which is the home estate of George Washington. That's open for tours. There's just so much to do and see in Washington. Hope you enjoy it. Notice that you don't find a bunch of skyscrapers and other super-tall buildings in Washington, DC. There are height limitations on buildings there, and because of that, buildings like the Washington Monument and the US Capitol are not overshadowed by other more modern structures.
I wish I had been able to watch this live last night. You are very considerate when it comes to others history. That is one of the things I've enjoyed about your channel. Thank you for your wonderful insights and thoughts. Enjoy your trip.
Places you should check out: If you have time stop at Ben's Chili Bowl. It's a famous stop to get some grub. Some Presidents have gone there. Also check out The Mall, they have a ton of Museums including Air and Space Museum which is fantastic. Speakeasies are nice to check out for a date night. It's fun!
There is a no-fly zone for civilian aircraft around the White House area. The Washington Monument was damaged a few years ago so they closed the access to the top.
I am sorry I missed your live broadcast, but I live in Arizona and I see you are wearing the official necktie of Arizona in addition to your kilt in Washington DC with the official USA tartan. As so many Americans come from different backgrounds, it is nice to see you representing some of those different backgrounds here in your video.
Wish you could see that place during a nice beautiful sunny day..been there a couple times for business..only had a few hours each to see ..quite humbling
Yes it is a huge building and the statue of Lincoln himself is massive from where you're at when you're talking about the airplanes you can start to see the chair he's sitting in coming into focus in the center of the memorial
While in Philadelphia, check out Eater Philly. If you’re in Center City (aka downtown) the Reading Terminal is great for breakfast or lunch. My favorite restaurant is Fork. Lots of new & established bars and restaurants in Northern Liberties and Fishtown. Philadelphia Chinatown is amazing.
Watching this now. I'm sorry I missed this live. My ex husband was stationed at Walter Reed and we lived there for several years. My oldest son was born at Walter Reed. I loved walking around at night there and having lunch at the Lincoln Memorial. Definitely visit the Smithsonian museums...amazing. ❤
I've never been to washington dc and I have always wanted to make a pilgrimage there! So I shall enjoy this video! Hopefully in 2023 I will make it to DC! 🙂
You were right near my office. The building you liked but didn’t know what it is is the National Museum of African American History. It’s very pretty and interesting looking in daylight hours.

So practical! This deserves a thousand likes, I hope they see it!
Lettered east-west streets are alphabetical (No J street). Then they are two syllable words A-Z (roughly). Then three syllable words.
When you said it was an honor and a privilege to be at the Lincoln Memorial I burst into tears. Bless you, sir.
🙌
I was also brought to tears. Appreciate how respectful you were through out the video.

My daughter was maybe eight years old and I took her there.. people were so respectful ..she looked around and bowed to the abe statue..so sweet
You might like to see the Museum of the American Indian. What a gift to take us with you.
i have several ancestors that helped found this country. I think I would cry all of the time I was in DC. (several Scots!)
This was a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing this with us Shaun.
You're in my neighborhood. You should come to the house for some fresh crab cakes. I spent 30 years serving in the US Marine Band....the White House band.
I’m late but am now watching from Florida - The Occidental Grill is a great place to grab a bite to eat - it’s in DC
You may not have time but the Air and Space Museum in DC is very cool!
Shaun you look AWESOME in your kilt! I'm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. So happy you are here!!
Did you know when you look at the reverse side of the American penny, there’s a teeny tiny Abraham Lincoln statue inside the teeny tiny Lincoln memorial?
Have never been to D.C. enjoyed seeing the Lincoln memorial and the Washington monument. Take care
I have never watched a live stream all the way through on replay before. You are Both wonderful tour guides. ❤️
Welcome back. Looking forward to the videos of your adventures. Cheers.
I have watched USAKilts. Now is a good time to come to Phoenix Arizona. It’s cool with high in 70s. Fahrenheit.
Welcome to America 🇺🇸. Stay safe.
If everyone had the respect you do for our national treasures… thanks for an awesome walk.
❤❤❤Love the kilt!!! 😊
I want to thank you for doing a live stream in D.C. Probably the closest I'll ever get to being there.... so thanks.

I like you two on livestream better than an edited video. Your reactions seem more authentic. We also get to see it with you. Thank you.
You have visited more iconic places in America then most Americans and for that I thank you for your service .
Hi Shaun from San Antonio TX. I love watching your videos. I've never been to DC. but anytime I hear yelling around me I also get nervous.
Mondays not a holiday- just online😊
When I see President Lincoln I remember the photos taken of him when he was elected, and photos of him just before his death, and it seemed he gave his actual flesh to the preservation of the country. Probably the man I respect most in all of history. Hope so much I can stand there some day...

Glad to have you back!!
1:09:35 Shaun in a kilt in front of the memorial with the beautiful sky behind him, looks like a painting of a Scottish lord.
You need more than a couple of days in DC. So much to see and learn🇺🇸
Hi Shaun welcome to my neck of the woods! I live about 90 Mile's south of Washington DC.. come to Richmond VA.. full of history!
66 miles north of you guys :) We drove through DC yesterday. Have a blessed time! Bel Air, Maryland - North of Baltimore
Thanks to the two of you for hosting this, it was an amazing time. Have a safe trip to Pennsylvania. Cheers! 🍺
When will you be in Philly?
@@kathrynformica4454 I think they're going there Tuesday.

I so enjoyed your walk through DC. You both did an amazing job. Great work 🎉
It’s nice to see and hear your excitement and fascination. I had all that when I first moved to the DC area for work.
Loved this. I live in St. Pete Florida now, but I grew up in DC. I miss everything but the weather and the traffic. It's a great city when you know where to go.
Philly❤️🏴
Excited to see this! Hope you enjoy! I live in MD right outside of DC. Lots to see and do. Enjoy!

You're here in the late fall. Brave man. Weather can be unpredictable this time of year.
Here’s to hoping I bump into you in DC this week!
The water in front of the Wash.Mem is the reflecting pool. In daylight it reflects the whole structure

If still in the area, come see the Scottish Walk parade in Alexandria VA tomorrow. The day ends with a boat holiday parade on the Potomac.
Thanks Shaun for doing this. I’ve never seen anyone walk it and film at night. Those reflections were beautiful.

Bens Chili Bowl for sure (the original location on u street). Get a half smoke.
Walking through D.C. at night can be beautiful it's better on a clear night.
Live is my favourite!!!!!!! Wish you did more ♥️
Welcome to D.C.! Everything should be open tomorrow, and remember: The Smithsonian museums are free of charge to get in.
In Arizona. I'll look up to get my son a kilt
Million man March several years ago - right where you are
There is a no-fly zone for civilian aircraft around the White House area. The Washington Monument was damaged a few years ago so they closed the access to the top.

The Lincoln memorial is the place to go!!!
Michigan! Says HELLO Keep being Cool
I use to love walking around DC at night.
It is a Sunday, but not only that, it’s a Sunday on a holiday weekend, so yes, bit quiet.
Wish you could see that place during a nice beautiful sunny day..been there a couple times for business..only had a few hours each to see ..quite humbling

Hi Shaun! Good to see you over here!
You were right near my office. The building you liked but didn’t know what it is is the National Museum of African American History. It’s very pretty and interesting looking in daylight hours.
Also, you can go to parks services online for Washington monument and they have an elevator to go to top you can reserve to go up and only costs 1$
Great idea! I love that, I hope they go.
The reflecting pool is 18” on the sides, and 30” in the middle.
Hey! I used to work there!. That old white house looks familiar.
Watching from "o" Town Washington state.
Hope you enjoyed your time in PA & WASHINGTON DC
There is a plaque at spot where MLK gave his I have a Dream speech at the front
Be sure to see the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial. Both are like no other memorial you've ever seen. Particularly the Korean one.
Looking good in the kilt. Got a bit of swagger going there.
That big lit up building with the flat roof you could see from the Washington monument is the Lincoln Memorial
I dont really know a lot about downtown, but there is a place called Trios on 17th street and Q street which I would call refined diner food. Its a popular place.
The cap of the Washington Monument is aluminum because at the time it was finished aluminum was rarer than gold. Only later with electricity did it become easy to refine.
The stonework changes about 1/3 the way up due to construction stopping during the Civil War.
Many countries donated memorial stones that line the interior stairs. Poor Pius IX donated one but anti Catholics stole it and dumped it in the Potomac where it presumably still is.
