They just took the "Chemical" theming idea and RAN with it! All the additions just FIT so seamlessly, adding something new without being excessive or misplaced!
The guy was known for fan games and custom game engines. Regardless, I agree, they should have done this a long time ago. I'm just tired of the trite games Sega keeps pumping out. Hopefully Sonic Mania will live up to its expectations and gets a sequel. It's all I need really.
It wasn't a romhacker; it was Christian Whitehead -- who's credited in this, by the way -- a fangame creator, who also created a custom engine running what would become the commercial re-release of Sonic CD. I believe he was also the guy that made that dig at Sega in the form of single-handedly developing a GBA ROM for the first level of Sonic 1, in response to Sega's own atrocious port of Sonic 1 to that system, to prove that it didn't have to suck. He put Tails and Knuckles in for good measure. His signature of adding little touches like that would show up in his later official ports.
What should i say about this...it's my most anticipated game EVER. Welcome back in business Sonic. Good to see you strong again like in the Mega Drive/Genesis days :D
UtherSwagBringer I love the Boost gameplay, but it does have issues, like the fact that Unleashed and Generations both end up being very focused on holding a button with little player input unless a section requires you to slow down and platform. Forces is more like Colors in that regard as it seems to have more of a focus on platforming than it does Boosting
They are making what sells, so if everything goes well with this game (which is a strong possibility imo), then you better believe they will make something like this again.
This remix is so good. The music and the level its self too. I wish generations did like this game and gave us new takes on old levels not just going through the same level in 2d and 3d. I'm so excited for Mania it is going to be amazing
i've never really been into classic sonic, but i have to say this game looks fucking amazing. the taxman is great at coming up with awesome level design, gimmicks and mechanics. even better than sonic team themselves. and THAT SOUNDTRACK.

So far, so good. I know some people don't like the fact that Sonic Mania are using levels from past 2D Sonic games, but hey, the likes of Green Hill and Chemical Plant look absolutely beautiful. Mania has a LOT of potential to be a winner for the Sonic franchise this year.

Anyone else notice how HUGE this level is for a classic sonic level? It got 4 and a half minutes in and the level still wasn't complete, but it seems like the level is paced so well and flows so smoothly I didn't even notice. Then again, that remix of Chemical Plant is distractingly awesome.
I like the placement of the invincibility box at 2:18. I can almost hear the level design itself speaking to the player. "Oh for the love of... you went _left?_ Seriously, we even put a steep downward slope to guide you to the right and everything! Okay, okay, you're obviously not very experienced with these kinds of games. Tell you what, since you obviously need the help, we'll give you a mercy item. Now head back to the right, and try to stay focused, okay?"
Digging this new version of the Chemical Plant music and also glad that it's confirmed that the zone acts will have different variations of the same song like in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
I love how these remixes of OG tracks(and the other original tracks they've revealed) have a Sonic CD vibe to them. SCD is a game I haven't played as much as 1-3&K but the soundtrack was awesome to say the least.

The bouncy liquids are a bit different between Mania and SRB2 : In Mania, the color of the liquid affects on how high you will be thrown. Just hit and envoy your not quite flight. In SRB2, you sink in the liquid and make surface before being thrown in the air. The height you reach depends on how deep you plunge into the liquid. Oh, after a while you can walk on the liquid (not as fast as solid ground).
And thats what many are loving about this game: it takes what worked from the classics and cranks it up to new levels of creativity and imagination. Sega knew that hiring high qualified fans to do a game like this was a smart move and its paying off BIG TIME.
I like the helix lifts, even though they're a bit strange (not sure how they fit in with the theme of the level but they look neat). Also it looks like Tails retained his controls from the mobile versions of Sonic 1 (where you can still manipulate Tails even in solo by holding up and jumping).
this is awesome, the levels are HUGE! there's a lot of exploration to do now, imagine if there were hidden collectibles! in that case this game would be just infinite.
You seem to be confusing the Sonic 1 Special Stage system with the Sonic 3 Special Stage system. In other words, you don't need 50 Rings, you just have to find the Giant Rings. They don't work here because this is a demo.
I'm assuming it'll work exactly how it did in Sonic 3 and that you don't need any rings to enter them. I'm guessing they're just locked because they don't want to show them off yet

This redesigned Act 2 really makes the stilted design of the mostly-the-same Act 1 stand out, doesn't it. The stage design does a much better job of leading and keeping the pace in the new Act 2.

I guess the fact that the Catakiller jr badnik is in this stage, pretty much confirms that Angel Island zone won't be in Sonic Mania. I'm fine with that as long as Mushroom Hill zone is included. Also the fact that the bat badnik is in Green Hill zone probably confirms that Marble zone won't be in Mania either.
