It amazes me how so many people in the comments are upset by what Dr. Heiser says. His position is that the prophets wrote the scriptures first to the people of their own time, the people who needed to hear it right away in a language and framework that would make sense to them. Then that we, the modern audience need to realize this so that we can correctly learn from the scriptures in modern times because many of us try and force our post-modern scientific views onto these teachings that were written in a different time, language, culture, and spiritual and secular worldview. I agree that modern people can learn from the scriptures just by reading them, but if you can get the background, for lack of a better word on what was happening during the time that each part of scripture was written then you gain a deeper and richer understanding of the Word of God.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 1.Pet.1:10-12 The separation between to you and for you is a false dichotomy.

I'm not so sure that Heiser is balanced in his view of where the ancient writers thoughts end and what God inspired. Because our Bible was inspired by a God that was NOT just inspiring His prophets to write for their fellow ancients, as He also fully foreknew that we moderns would also, one day, be intensively studying Scripture. So, there's clearly inspired stuff in there meant for BOTH the ancient world and for our world. And some of the modern meanings wouldn't have been possible in the days of the ancients, but God knew, in the future, that further understandings would be had. So, it doesn't have to be one or the other audience gleaned all of the knowledge accurately. Plus, there are truths that the ancients would have understood that are now lost to us - mostly / likely, less important things for US, but that were important the ancients! Now, God could easily inspire Scripture for both audiences without making the ancients write or think in a way unnatural to their time and sensibilities, or that isn't true for both cultures and times.
Man’s understanding of God begins with God, from the beginning of creation God made himself known to humanity. God walked with Adam and Eve, God spoke to Adam and Eve, Adam and Eve spoke of God to their offspring. Adam and Eve were also made aware of other supernatural beings because one came to Eden to betray them and deceive them. Mankind did not in the first instance ‘reason’ out Deity. The fallen Angels intermingled with humanity so a supernatural world of beings was known. What we find in the Bible - the Word of God is that humans went from uncorrupted thought to corrupted thought. From an uncorrupted knowledge of God to a corrupted knowledge of God. The volume of the Word of God is about God - about Father Son and Holy Spirit. The Bible is God’s revelation of himself to humanity. Yes God spoke to each Generation through the prophets, but any good Bible scholar understands that God tells of the end from the beginning, and that in each prophecy that had a fulfilment at the time the Word was revealed it also contained words speaking to the end of things. God is glorifying His name. By the way whilst Satan is at war with God, God just goes about bringing His plan into being. God’s plan was before the creation of the World. God does not act in reaction to any of Satan’s schemes, rather God just keeps doing what He always planned on doing. Satan, try as he might to upset that work of God never accomplishes that task. Satan is a created being, a tool in the hand of God. Remember that Satan had to ask to sift Jonah and Peter, and God allowed it. Why does God allow such things well it is for God’s glory and our benefit. Long story short the Bible was written to keep a record of God’s revelation of Himself, His purposes and His plan of salvation. It has eternal application as well as temporal application.

It's hard for me that so many are militant about their views of inerrancy or inspiration as if they can't believe in sin and salvation if there is any change to the CSBI.
It doesn't matter what biblical inspiration actually looked like for Paul, John, Peter, Luke, Mark, etc. Those aren't letters written solely by human minds! The way all of Christian theology harmonizes throughout 66 books is beyond mortal ability.
It was WRITTEN by men of that ancient era… they don’t have divine KNOWLEDGE but was written under divine inspiration. The Bible was written TO the ancient ppl . Message is the same. Maybe when u have a scripture read the whole chapter( or even better whole book, Example: Genesis, Jeremiah, whatever verse that came from). It’s helped me so much. Heiser was. a GREAT teacher. A thought I had about the "other realm": I have borderline aphantasia, and I recently discovered to my great surprise that when most people see mental imagery, they appear to see it on a separate plane from physical space, which they often describe as a "second monitor screen". I don't have this; I can visualize simple, two-dimensional drawings, but they appear to be floating in the space in front of my face. This made me wonder if the subjective experience of a separate visual plane, or "second monitor screen", is what gave rise to the belief of a separate spiritual realm which can interact to some degree with the physical world but nonetheless is on a different plane. That is how the majority of people perceive their own thoughts! For me that is totally bizarre, since my thoughts don't work that way. But I can imagine (non-visually) how primitive people might have become aware of that second screen and hypothesized that there existed another realm which is parallel to the physical world in a similar manner. And of course, prophetic visions would have been experienced in this second screen, so people prone to such visions would have imagined that they were in contact with the other realm. I'm curious what Dr Heiser would think of this theory. I don't necessarily mean that spiritual perceptions are "nothing but" mental imagery, but rather that the experience of such an imagistic plane would have enabled ancient people to conceptualize how spiritual realms could exist.

The people offended in the comment sections probably still think that they’re the main Character of the bible LOL. Dr. Heiser is absolutely right, to truly understand scripture you must put yourself in the shoes of who the scripture was written to in its correct time period and culture .
I would like to know without doubt if people in hell will be tormented for ALL eternity or, will they be consumed by fire but, feel it? Is hell total annihilation or, torment throughout eternity? If it's torment throughout eternity, It makes me fear God. Scripture declares that we are born in sin and shaped in iniquity; Scripture also declares that we're drawn away and enticed by our own lust. It's seems like we can't win....
In the end, Satan and Hell will be thrown in the Lake of Fire and destroyed... but, if five seconds in hell feels like a thousand years I'd rather not spend any time there at all.
The people who are claiming that Dr. Heiser is blaspheming the Holy Spirit are being emotional and not being academic. Inspiration does not mean dictation.
I dont only believe God and my Lord Jesus Christ through His word, I am a knower of Him through His spirit. He counted me! A sinner brought into a sin fallen world IN sin, and BY sin, and He counted ME as righteous in His eyes! I will never look back! Blessed is my Lord AND my God Jesus Christs Holy Holy Holy name! He came to me! And counted my FAITH in Him as righteousness and sent Me His Holy Spirit! I always believed in God through Jesus Christ name! Now, I know God through His Holy Spirit! It all happened and I didn't even own a bible! My life completely changed last January and God gave me new eyes to see what others cannot AND new ears to hear what others can not...and there is 1 witness in the flesh to it, and 1 in the spirit! And No one knows! Something biblical is happening and all pieces are lined up, and somehow...I am involved! God is Good! God is Good without the extra "O"! My brother of faith is my brother of blood! I totally agree with everything you said... Except the words. I hate the slogan "for us but not to us." I think it misses something. First, where I agree with you: even if God had inspired Moses in a way that was compatible with 20th century science and technology, 20th century science and technology will be equally obsolete and demonstrate just as many inconsistencies in observations by the time we get to the 30th century. If God had accelerated them to “the end of technology,” then there would be no opportunity for growth since then. All our heros of discovery would exist in a single generation with no hope of anyone achieving them ever again. The only thing that makes the current moment feel privileged is that we happen to be living in it. Every generation in history is special in exactly that same way. And just like Dash Par famously lamented, “Everyone is special is just another way of saying no one is.” All of that is what the slogan is trying to say, and when it is only used to say that, I agree. It’s to the original audience, even though we living centuries later benefit from them as though they are for us. The slogan can be taken too far, though. We know that Matthew and Mark and Luke were written in the middle of the first century. We know that they have a context and that Matthew and Mark and Luke were saying something specific. However, there are the famous seven statements of Christ from the Cross. These statements are scattered among the four gospels. Yet it seems ironic that there are seven of them, with seven being a special number in both Jewish and Christian theology. This is a message that was not written to Matthew preaching in Palestine, Peter preaching in Rome, Luke carrying Paul’s message forward, or John preaching in Ephesus. This message was only revealed to the generation of Christians after them, when the Gospels were collected. So who was this message written to? We know it wasn’t written to the “original audience.” We know it wasn’t written for the audiences before them. (That would be some next level prophecy right there.) Well yeah they were writing to the other Israelites who were alive and consequently their future generations as well. Which does mean yes they were writing to some of us. Of which they already assumed we would have been brought up in the right way, but so often that knowledge was never passed down and was cut off. I guess from the curses right? With that in mind yeah they also were writing to us for when we lost our knowledge in confusion to help bring it out?
My comment is not meant to be divisive. I agree with much of the teachings! I agree that it's not as if they just sat down and boom, the Lord starts instructing them. However, have you ever been "inspired" by the HS and then quickly jotted down your thoughts? He used His people then, just as He does today because He is unchanging. The opinion represented here is often where academia and faith clash. This thinking puts man's thoughts above God's sovereignty. He surely knew what He wanted recorded and when He wanted it recorded in history. Any writing inspired was for all generations to know His truth. Surely we should understand the cultural setting, etc., that will only increase our understanding in the present. And, speaking of creation. Surely, the Spirit of God knows what He made and how He made it. We shouldn't be so arrogant in our belief in scientific theories (which stem from atheistic mind sets & and sadly, from occultism; therefore, exalting itself against the LORD) taking what they say as truth. Yahweh surely knew the wool the adversary would pull over all the earth. Let faith arise!

He is different - when Paul says Jesus is Lord, he isn't just making a political statement, especially when you remember that he is writing in Greek. ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (Lord in English) was how the LXX (Septuagint) translated the name of God YHWH. Jesus isn't just the son of God, as the spirits who form the Elohim, but is YHWH as well. Check out Heiser's work on it.

Dr. Heiser! Does the caduceus come from the Bible? Moses staff was turned into a snake that healed those who saw it. Is there a connection that the Egyptians and other civilizations got it from the Torah?
Having listened to Dr Heiser I find him to not have a full perspective on the purpose of scripture. How can I say this? Well he says that scripture is not written to us but to the people of the day. We read these writings today and assume that it is there to teach us. However without the authors guidance the bible is just another book. For example if you read a manual on a subject which you're not familiar, is the manual written for you? No. After you've received training on the subject you will be able not only to read but understand the manual. Genesis to Malachi was not written for the Jews much less the Gentiles. None of us fully understand it. Yes we understand the words written but miss its function. The old testament was written for one Jew who demonstrated exactly what to do with it down to the last detail. The four gospels are a witness to this. The rest is a test to see if you understand what its all about. Dr Heiser is only partially right.

No man gets to Father but THROUGH the Holy Holy Holy name of Jesus Christ who was, who IS, and who WILL be forever more God as He is the Holy Ghost incarnate and represents 2 parts of God on earth at THAT time, a sliver of time in a biblical time line of Holy proportions of God of which has been written as historical fact so sinners such as ourselves as ALL fall short of His glory and all have sinned as being in the flesh is to be of sin and in sin can and should repent and seek God with all our minds, our hearts and our flesh to not only be the best YOU that God knows you can be but to understand why the world is the way it is and how you may be a glimmer of Hope in someone else's life because you walk in the spirit and the scales have been removed from the eyes of those who are accounted as righteous in Gods eyes may through the Holy name of Jesus lead others to Him as well. God is not found behind words of a preacher. God is not found in religion which is the wide road of damnation NOT salvation. God is not found in a synagogue. God is found INSIDE. When your flesh and mind directed Flesh denies your flesh, and follows your heart obeying the commandments and knowing who Jesus Christ really is, then the proverbial "fruits" of the labor are more than noticed by God...that is the point at which A believer of God through His word suddenly and eternally becomes a KNOWER of God in, and with, and by His Holy spirit. Jesus IS Lord. He came into the world before the world and the world knew Him not. 2000 years later, He is making His return as the Times of the Gentiles is almost complete. Evolution is a theory based on fantasy rooted in a deepseated desire for there to be no creator. Dr Heiser is wrong and yet he is right. Nothing more dangerous than having a partial truth with a drop of deception. Most people go with "sounds right therefore it must be true" instead of appealing to ultimate authority for clarification. It really is a shame. I very much like Dr. Heiser's work in general, but academics are too often poisoned by Academia. This Evolution/Creation hodgepodge nonsense is just the prime example of that.

God let's the individual know LITERALLY by sending that particular individual his Holy Ghost. No one should be excited about it, unless you know ALL is saved. Yes i agree. I think bible is combination of human/writer effort and way to tell the readers and Holy spirit works. So almost all verses was inspired by Holy spirit, but the way the authors wrote it by using their own culture, context and understanding in their time. I wouldn't say the mindset or world view was lost, But I would say certain aspects of it were. For instance it wasn't until the 19th century that we were finally able to really capture Genesis in the way its original audience would have understood it.

Three attributes, one being. We are created in his image so we share this same dynamic. Mind, body, and soul, one being. Father God is the mind, the intelligent designer. Jesus is the body, the locality of God, who we see in heaven. The holy spirit is the soul, the power that gives us life and personality. That's how I view it anyway.

It amazes me how so many people in the comments are upset by what Dr. Heiser says. His position is that the prophets wrote the scriptures first to the people of their own time, the people who needed to hear it right away in a language and framework that would make sense to them. Then that we, the modern audience need to realize this so that we can correctly learn from the scriptures in modern times because many of us try and force our post-modern scientific views onto these teachings that were written in a different time, language, culture, and spiritual and secular worldview.
I agree that modern people can learn from the scriptures just by reading them, but if you can get the background, for lack of a better word on what was happening during the time that each part of scripture was written then you gain a deeper and richer understanding of the Word of God.
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 1.Pet.1:10-12

I'm not so sure that Heiser is balanced in his view of where the ancient writers thoughts end and what God inspired. Because our Bible was inspired by a God that was NOT just inspiring His prophets to write for their fellow ancients, as He also fully foreknew that we moderns would also, one day, be intensively studying Scripture. So, there's clearly inspired stuff in there meant for BOTH the ancient world and for our world. And some of the modern meanings wouldn't have been possible in the days of the ancients, but God knew, in the future, that further understandings would be had. So, it doesn't have to be one or the other audience gleaned all of the knowledge accurately. Plus, there are truths that the ancients would have understood that are now lost to us - mostly / likely, less important things for US, but that were important the ancients! Now, God could easily inspire Scripture for both audiences without making the ancients write or think in a way unnatural to their time and sensibilities, or that isn't true for both cultures and times.

Man’s understanding of God begins with God, from the beginning of creation God made himself known to humanity. God walked with Adam and Eve, God spoke to Adam and Eve, Adam and Eve spoke of God to their offspring. Adam and Eve were also made aware of other supernatural beings because one came to Eden to betray them and deceive them. Mankind did not in the first instance ‘reason’ out Deity. The fallen Angels intermingled with humanity so a supernatural world of beings was known. What we find in the Bible - the Word of God is that humans went from uncorrupted thought to corrupted thought. From an uncorrupted knowledge of God to a corrupted knowledge of God.
The volume of the Word of God is about God - about Father Son and Holy Spirit. The Bible is God’s revelation of himself to humanity. Yes God spoke to each Generation through the prophets, but any good Bible scholar understands that God tells of the end from the beginning, and that in each prophecy that had a fulfilment at the time the Word was revealed it also contained words speaking to the end of things. God is glorifying His name. By the way whilst Satan is at war with God, God just goes about bringing His plan into being. God’s plan was before the creation of the World. God does not act in reaction to any of Satan’s schemes, rather God just keeps doing what He always planned on doing. Satan, try as he might to upset that work of God never accomplishes that task. Satan is a created being, a tool in the hand of God. Remember that Satan had to ask to sift Jonah and Peter, and God allowed it. Why does God allow such things well it is for God’s glory and our benefit.
Long story short the Bible was written to keep a record of God’s revelation of Himself, His purposes and His plan of salvation. It has eternal application as well as temporal application.

It's hard for me that so many are militant about their views of inerrancy or inspiration as if they can't believe in sin and salvation if there is any change to the CSBI.
It doesn't matter what biblical inspiration actually looked like for Paul, John, Peter, Luke, Mark, etc. Those aren't letters written solely by human minds! The way all of Christian theology harmonizes throughout 66 books is beyond mortal ability.
It was WRITTEN by men of that ancient era… they don’t have divine KNOWLEDGE but was written under divine inspiration. The Bible was written TO the ancient ppl . Message is the same. Maybe when u have a scripture read the whole chapter( or even better whole book, Example: Genesis, Jeremiah, whatever verse that came from). It’s helped me so much. Heiser was. a GREAT teacher. A thought I had about the "other realm":
I have borderline aphantasia, and I recently discovered to my great surprise that when most people see mental imagery, they appear to see it on a separate plane from physical space, which they often describe as a "second monitor screen". I don't have this; I can visualize simple, two-dimensional drawings, but they appear to be floating in the space in front of my face.
This made me wonder if the subjective experience of a separate visual plane, or "second monitor screen", is what gave rise to the belief of a separate spiritual realm which can interact to some degree with the physical world but nonetheless is on a different plane. That is how the majority of people perceive their own thoughts! For me that is totally bizarre, since my thoughts don't work that way. But I can imagine (non-visually) how primitive people might have become aware of that second screen and hypothesized that there existed another realm which is parallel to the physical world in a similar manner. And of course, prophetic visions would have been experienced in this second screen, so people prone to such visions would have imagined that they were in contact with the other realm.
I'm curious what Dr Heiser would think of this theory. I don't necessarily mean that spiritual perceptions are "nothing but" mental imagery, but rather that the experience of such an imagistic plane would have enabled ancient people to conceptualize how spiritual realms could exist.

First, where I agree with you: even if God had inspired Moses in a way that was compatible with 20th century science and technology, 20th century science and technology will be equally obsolete and demonstrate just as many inconsistencies in observations by the time we get to the 30th century. If God had accelerated them to “the end of technology,” then there would be no opportunity for growth since then. All our heros of discovery would exist in a single generation with no hope of anyone achieving them ever again. The only thing that makes the current moment feel privileged is that we happen to be living in it. Every generation in history is special in exactly that same way. And just like Dash Par famously lamented, “Everyone is special is just another way of saying no one is.”

It’s to the original audience, even though we living centuries later benefit from them as though they are for us. The slogan can be taken too far, though. We know that Matthew and Mark and Luke were written in the middle of the first century. We know that they have a context and that Matthew and Mark and Luke were saying something specific. However, there are the famous seven statements of Christ from the Cross. These statements are scattered among the four gospels. Yet it seems ironic that there are seven of them, with seven being a special number in both Jewish and Christian theology. This is a message that was not written to Matthew preaching in Palestine, Peter preaching in Rome, Luke carrying Paul’s message forward, or John preaching in Ephesus. This message was only revealed to the generation of Christians after them, when the Gospels were collected. So who was this message written to?
We know it wasn’t written to the “original audience.” We know it wasn’t written for the audiences before them. (That would be some next level prophecy right there.) That only leaves the audiences after them. Which is, in a way, us.

Well yeah they were writing to the other Israelites who were alive and consequently their future generations as well. Which does mean yes they were writing to some of us. Of which they already assumed we would have been brought up in the right way, but so often that knowledge was never passed down and was cut off. I guess from the curses right? My comment is not meant to be divisive. I agree with much of the teachings! I agree that it's not as if they just sat down and boom, the Lord starts instructing them. However, have you ever been "inspired" by the HS and then quickly jotted down your thoughts? He used His people then, just as He does today because He is unchanging.
The opinion represented here is often where academia and faith clash. This thinking puts man's thoughts above God's sovereignty. He surely knew what He wanted recorded and when He wanted it recorded in history. Any writing inspired was for all generations to know His truth. He is different - when Paul says Jesus is Lord, he isn't just making a political statement, especially when you remember that he is writing in Greek. ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (Lord in English) was how the LXX (Septuagint) translated the name of God YHWH. Jesus isn't just the son of God, as the spirits who form the Elohim, but is YHWH as well. Check out Heiser's work on it.

Having listened to Dr Heiser I find him to not have a full perspective on the purpose of scripture. How can I say this?
Well he says that scripture is not written to us but to the people of the day. We read these writings today and assume that it is there to teach us. However without the authors guidance the bible is just another book. For example if you read a manual on a subject which you're not familiar, is the manual written for you? No. After you've received training on the subject you will be able not only to read but understand the manual.
Genesis to Malachi was not written for the Jews much less the Gentiles. None of us fully understand it. Yes we understand the words written but miss its function. The old testament was written for one Jew who demonstrated exactly what to do with it down to the last detail. The four gospels are a witness to this.
The rest is a test to see if you understand what its all about.

Heiser puts forth here the new, modern way of interpreting Genesis. Because evolution is assumed to be true, Genesis must be non-historical.
Evolution is a theory based on fantasy rooted in a deepseated desire for there to be no creator. Dr Heiser is wrong and yet he is right. Nothing more dangerous than having a partial truth with a drop of deception. Most people go with "sounds right therefore it must be true" instead of appealing to ultimate authority for clarification. Yes i agree. I think bible is combination of human/writer effort and way to tell the readers and Holy spirit works. So almost all verses was inspired by Holy spirit, but the way the authors wrote it by using their own culture, context and understanding in their time. Yes prophets, apostles and writers of the scripture in general are not being necessary "possessed" while they were writing the scriptures but as we can see here some things were written and prophesied for the future generations and also we can see with Ezekiel and John that they were in some state of " X-File" trance and were commanded to write down the scriptures while they were in that state or that other dimension/vision. We have both cases, supernatural and natural development of the scripture both inspired by the holy ghost.

I wouldn't say the mindset or world view was lost, But I would say certain aspects of it were.
For instance it wasn't until the 19th century that we were finally able to really capture Genesis in the way its original audience would have understood it.

Three attributes, one being. We are created in his image so we share this same dynamic. Mind, body, and soul, one being. Father God is the mind, the intelligent designer. Jesus is the body, the locality of God, who we see in heaven. The holy spirit is the soul, the power that gives us life and personality. That's how I view it anyway.

No God is using the Bible to tell us the future from the past- the end from the begenning and the beginning from the end. He is dead WRONG on this one. Yes the bible contains truths that every generation NEEDS - wisdom, rules ect. HOWEVER , PROPHETS GAVE PROPHECIES THAT CLEARLY HAD PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE FUFILLMENT'S.
