This video is LONG overdue. I have absolutely loved the support for my Zutara videos so far, and thank you all for watching and supporting them.
In this video, we look at 2 key storytelling and thematic devices used within Avatar: The Last Airbender that gives evidence to support Zutara. We dive into the depths for Tui and La, and then in the lore of the Cave of Two Lovers.

Even Aangs character ark would benefit from a Zutara ending. That he had to let go of his crush (katara) to be able to enter the avatar state, just like the monk had told him. Maybe he would take the hint she gives him at the ember island play, and finally realise that she might not like him the way he likes her. It would make a lot more interesting story and development instead of him just being pushed onto a convenient placed rock.
He was even ready to do so in the crossroads of destiny, but Azula hit him with the lightning before he was fully in control of the avatar state.

Also in s1 Katara saying to Aang "Give zuko a kiss for me" and then kissing Aang on the cheek could have been foreshadowing that Katara wouldn't end up with Aang (like expected) but with zuko. Don't even get me started on how in s2 she almost healed his scar so she should of been the one in s3 to help wrap up zuko's new scar (not Mai) since he got the scar protecting her and she helped heal that new scar in battle.
Something that I’ve noticed about the Crystal Cave interaction is how the characters are kind of flipped right we’ve seen Zuko break down into tears and is very upset and emotionally hurt. And here we see him as a the comforter. Versus Katara, who is usually always the comforter. Now she is the one in tears in pain and breaking down. like definitely that Yin and yang energy man. Also, I noticed people like to say that we look too deeply into this, but when people look too deeply into the other characters and other parallels that are surrounding them, like Zuko and Aang that’s just good storytelling. It’s just smart and it works blah blah… but when we noticed the parallels between Katara and Zuko, we’re just trying to “force” a love story. As if it isn’t practically written that way. 😂
Yes! I love that parallel. We really get to see Katara lower her walls and not have to be there for everyone like she normally is. And Zuko being the comforter to someone he was enemies with speaks volumes.
Yeah, all the evidence is there, people just don’t like that we connect it together 😂

it's EXTREMELY relevant that katara is almost always the one comforting others, but whenever she's with zuko, he's comforting her. whenever katara has an emotional need, aang ignores it (or worse, chastises her for it). only zuko actually sees and accepts and responds to her emotional needs. only zuko actually trusted katara to confront her mother's killer and do what was right for her to heal her trauma. zuko got to heal his own trauma by confronting, being prepared to kill, but ultimately not killing, his father and he sees that katara needs the same but he NEVER forces that choice on her. and katara & aang never actually reconcile the fact that aang did try to force forgiveness on katara, that instead of listening to her and supporting her and trusting her, he lectured her and scolded her like no one is allowed to need different things or make different choices than him... least of all his madonna complex broodmare bride, katara.

YES ZUTARA!!! I also want to point out how when Zuko and Katara were fighting Azula, when Zuko was down after saving Katara from lightning he reached out to her like a man who loves a woman dearly would, and how when Katara saw Zuko down she reached out to him to heal him like a woman who loves a man dearly would, their facial expressions when seeing each other also tells ALOT I mean this whole scene was like two lovers battling side by side . Even when I was 10 I was like "oh they for sure gonna end up together"😉 (sadly I was wrong and in pain🥲) so personally to me Zutara is canon 🥰
I totally agree! The way they reached for each other, and even the way Katara yelled his name when she ran to him, just SCREAMED that they were in love! They’re canon in my mind too 🥰
Same!! My 10-year-old self was squealing, and then they ended it in an interesting way🙂.
Bryke mocking zutara was so hurtful to me as a kid. I watched it again at 14/15 and still couldn't understand why she would choose aang, especially at that point in time. As an adult now, it's just annoying how much of a disservice they did to kataras character.
@@pinkstarlightchaos3076 yeah, they also did a diservice to aang's character who doesn't progress much, zuko who end up with mai, because he can't be alone or else the zutarian won't stop, when they don't work together at ALL , but i do think the biggest diservice was indeed to katara's, as she became much less than what she was in the comic and TLOK, in weach she is a griving ( no idea how to spell that word, i'm not a native english speaker ) wife and a healer, that raised 2 of her child alone, when aang was going only with tenzin to the air nomad temple ( can we speak about of katara has abandonement issues from her father ( S3 ep 1 ) and aang did just that ? That she was someone that wanted to fight for what she believed, and fight against being reduce to only healing people, and she end becoming as the best healer in the world, did not fight in TLOK, when her friends still alive ( toph and zuko) would still fight very well ?? All her friends have statues- ( and so does cabbage man ) but she does not ? How she is pushed in the mother role in ATLA, doesn't really like that, and yet, it's what she moslty become ? ( We see no actual politic presence of her in TLOK, when all other did )

Katara has been forced into a mother/caretaker role. This was shown multiple times during the show, and sokka even said it in one of the episodes. This was something i felt katara wanted to break away from, and it's sad to see that she is now reduced to the wife of aang and the mother of his children.
She is a great warrior who is not recognized for her achievements in the same way as the others, and I just don't understand why!
Aang continued to have a free-spirited and boyish/childish mindset when it came to childcare and being a husband.
@@clarissaguyot6415 the way katara was treated throughout ATLA and TLOK just shows the latent misogyny of mike & bryan. they only ever regarded her as a prize for aang, an incubator for future air nomads. i could've sworn they said something early on about aang NOT restoring the air nomads as a point about the irreversible consequences of war - sometimes an entire race of people is wiped out, and you can't undo that. there's no backspace button on genocide. but by the end of it they were so determined to give their self-insert what he wanted (wish fulfillment of their IRL crushes on their babysitters) that they dehumanized katara, stripped her of her agency and chained her to a man who never truly loved her for who she actually was, only the ideal she represented.
Zutara WAS set up perfectly. Had the series played out 100% exactly the same except Katara had kissed Zuko when she healed him instead of Aang later, there would be no denying the whole setup of their romance, yet Kataangers pretend it wasn't there at all and Zutarians are seeing things that aren't there and are just reaching. But that's not true, the writers ADMITTED to putting Zutara elements in there to stoke the ship war flames to keep fans extra invested, because, let's face it, shipping fuel is a powerful thing.
Zutara just made so much more sense in all ways, but instead they went with Kataang solely for the hero-gets-girl trope and so Aang can be happy and get what he wanted. Also, I know lots of people who are of mind of this, but Kataang comes across as a self-interest from the writers. They both admitted that they based Katara off of girls they had crushes on but it didn't work out with, and one of the writers looks like an exact copy of adult Aang minus the arrows. Not saying that IS the case, but with what they said about Katara's character inspiration, the exact lookalike of one of the writers to Aang, and their insistence of going with Kataang over Zutara despite several of the cast (including Katara and Zuko's voice actors who personify them) shipping Zutara, the literal perfect setup for Zutara, and with Zutara being the more popular ship of the two, it certainly seems like the self-insert theory could have merit.
Hopefully the Netflix version will recognize the missed opportunity and go with Zutara over Kataang knowing how, to this day, its still the more popular of the two. And there's a decent chance too if you look at the ages of the cast, which would just make Kataang weird.
One thing that I have noticed in season 3 ( book 3) is that Zuko and Katara are in almost every scene together and the only person he seems to have any serious or meaningful conversations with is Katara as opposed to his interactions with Toph and Sokka, witch have only been used for comedic purposes.

Let's not forget that Shu and Oma are a waterbender and Firebender, with Oma being Zuko's ancestor if memory serves! There *IS* a connection between that pairing and this one.

Omg I didn't even realize that. I knew the color schemes were similar to them but I didn't realize they were representative of those elements. I always thought they were just earthbenders!
@@thefictionalscholar with ATLA character clothing is ALWAYS important. The choice of Shu in BLUE and Oma in RED was intentional!

@@thefictionalscholar I think Bryke tried to come out and say it wasn't planned but I think that's BS cause they have to look over the episodes before they go out, don't they?
one of the things i love to point out in defending zutara is how often zuko & katara are shown using virtually identical bending moves - see for example zuko at 13:14 and katara at 13:16 in this very video. or zuko basically using the water wave that katara learned from the waterbending scroll to fend off the dai li at the end of season 2. or the way they both use elemental whips against each other during the season 2 finale.
I couldn't agree more! Thank you for making these points. Most of my friends who like Avatar either prefer Kataang or Zukka or don't ship anything and it's kind of frustrating sometimes because I'm not trying to lose friends over some fictional relationships but I'm a very passionate person and it's hard for me to not express my opinions. Especially when it comes to romantic plots. I tend to get hyper-interested in them because I feel like -- maybe more than any other aspect of fiction -- romance can have a serious impact on a reader/viewer. Especially in children's media. I always find myself trying to "fight" for the "healthy couple." I also love good writing and analyzing characters, plots, motifs, etc. I'm particularly in love with Zutara because not only are they that healthy couple, they thematically complete each other and the show as a whole. It's so rare to find that, especially in not-primarily romantic shows/books.
I could certainly ramble on about all of my reasons in more detail but then this would be obscenely long for a youtube comment. I'll probably have a minimum 3-hour video diving into it myself someday so for now I will stop here. I just wanted to thank you, and all of the other creators, who have done these genuine analyses for Zutara. It's nice to know other people saw what I was seeing!
I'm super passionate about this too! It's so bizarre to me how so many people try to defend Kataang by saying Zutara is toxic or how they'd be awful for each other. And I'm like, no? They would be super healthy for each other AND thematically have so much going for them in the show.

I definitely shipped these two from day one as well. I think something interesting to point out as well Zuko is the only character that Katara doesn't mother which goes to your point that they truly treat each other as equals. I think it would have been so cool for Aang to have to go through a story arc where he has to get over Katara or at least get to a place where even though he wants to be with her he wants her to be happy more and realizes that it doesn't matter how much he loves her he wouldn't make her happy how awesome would a storyline like that be?!? I say all of that because I've read fanfic for Zutara where they turn Aang into a dick and I don't like that. I also even think that Mai and Zuko could have still happened but in a very different way if I was writing it I would make three things very clear with those two, I think the whole reason those two do get together at all is because they understand each other in a way almost no one else does, the other thing I'd make clear is despite that Zuko is only with her because she represents the perfect life he lost, and most importantly they feed into each others worst behaviors.

Actually, during the Fortune Teller, it cannot cut to Zuko right after Katara's hand reading, because Zuko does not even appear in this episode. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to debunk the possibility of the powerful bender being Zuko, but this person who commented that is actually wrong. The Fortune Teller is one of the episodes ahede there is no Zuko or Iroh🤷🏽♀️
I absolutly love Zutara, it was only till i got older did i realise that their story would have made a better ending than that of Aang and Katara
However, the comment about the episode of the fortune teller doesn't make much sense. There is no cut away to Zuko after the fortune teller says to Katara that she will marry a powerful bender, there is no Zuko in the episode at all tbh. Is the comment referencing another time that someone mentions a powerful bender and then cuts to Zuko since Zuko isn't in the fortune teller episode?
There is also the part where Aunt Wu foretells that Aang possibly won’t have a love interest, but when Aunt Wu notices that Aang is sadden by this possible fortune it feels like she kinda of made up the next fortune she tells Aang🤔🤔
I know this is an older video, but I just need to add that the ENTIRE animated ATLA takes place in a year. The seasons make it seem longer, but to me, it makes Kataang even less likely. And that is before we add in that not only did Zuko and Katara raise Aang, Katara literally played his mother in the headband episode. 🤢
I can feel ZUTARA becoming a reality on the Netflix show. The live action only amplified Kataang as inappropriate. And with all the Nickelodeon scandal blowing out, I don't think we will be seeing Kataang on that universe. Hehehe✨

Seria tan fácil como que Nickelodeon eliminara las escenas "Romanticas" de Katara con Aang, y de Zuko con el Mai en el ultimo episodio y sustituyera la de la terraza con un beso de Zutara, y listos, tendríamos la serie animada perfecta. Es lamentable, y super patético que esta gran idea que habría hecho de Avatar mejor de lo que ya fue, no se haya llevado a cabo justo en el ultimo capitulo, algo que podría haber sido la serie mas épica de la historia acabo convirtiéndose en un final frustrante y vomitivo ¿Quién sabe? A lo mejor algún señor o señora importante de Nickelodeon lee esto y se da cuenta de que solo hay que corregir unas pocas cosas del ultimo capitulo, y ya, podrían dejar La Leyenda de Korra como un futuro alternativo y aprovechar para crear otra serie secuela donde el Zutara haya sido canon
