A Case for Zutara - Part 1

Welcome back to another analysis (of some sort) of one of my favorite ships of all time, Zutara. I know I'm not the first to make a video on this and I know I won't be the last, but here's my take on Zutara and why I believe the two characters should have ended up together.

Little note about the Blue Spirit, in the comics it reveals that the mask comes from a play that Zuko's family used to watch called "Love Amongst the Dragons" and was a Dark Water Spirit in the play. So its not just the color scheme, its actually a Water Tribe spirit.
Adds some more thematic parallels as Katara disguises a "good" Fire Nation Spirit while Zuko disguises as a "bad" Water Tribe Spirit.
That's so cool, I didn't realize that. It just adds more depth to their dynamic!

Canon does NOT equal better/superior, and we saw for ourselves how, for lack of a better word, poor Kataang ended up being. They ended up with a broken, dysfunctional family, and their children held a great deal of resentment towards each other and their parents, especially towards Aang, and these problems can all be traced back to how Katara and Aang were incompatible as a couple, problems that neither Zuko nor Katara would have had if they were together; in fact, when they were together, even as friends, they made each other better people and grew as individuals, and they understood and related to each other better than anyone else in the series. Plus, neither had a problem addressing the other when they were in the wrong, whereas Katara only ever goes along with what Aang wants and constantly mothers him (all of which became even worse in the comics after they got together), and it was even stated that Aang never grew up (why would he with Katara always being the adult and mothering him), yet the writers said that Katara found this endearing. Sure, she may have been "happy", but based on everything we got of Kataang in LoK and what could have become of Zutara based on everything we saw of them throughout ATLA, had Zutara happened, she would have been much happier and better off, and she wouldn't have been reduced to a stay at home housewife best known for her healing when she literally fought Pakku not to be stuck as such a thing, and she doesn't get even a fraction of the recognition the others do.
All I can think about is the great storylines a Fire Lord and a souther Water Tribe bending master could have done if they were together for the story line of LoK 😭
I know!! It would've made for a much more interesting storyline!!
I’ve found my people!! How can they set it up so good and not give it to us! Pretty sure Zuko started my obsession with the bad guy anti hero turned good who is just misunderstood! I still read fan fiction to this day!
I could talk about Zutara all day they bring out the best in each other. I think Zuko understands her more than aang. She mothers aang so much it’s just weird that they end up together to me.
Yeah I am still mad to this DAY that they didn't get together!! Zutara was so well set up and they would've balanced each other more than Aang and Katara does.

zuko was never a bad guy...he was a broken boy
So glad I found this! I liked this video a lot as a Zutara shipper. I think you did a great job. The only this I kinda do disagree with is when you said Zuko has the want/need to help people but he chooses not to act on it because he's fire nation. Zuko has shown compassion many times during the series just like Katara and I don't really remember many times where he fights the urge to help people. But I know when he does before his redemption arc it doesn't really have anything to do with being fire nation it has more to do with his father. His father thought Zuko being kind and compassionate was a weakness and made him weak so because Zuko wants his approval sometimes he will fight it but often times he just can't suppress the compassionate side of himself. I like that when he gets redeemed he fully embraces this side of himself and it makes him a happier person.
There's just so much to talk about when it comes to Zutara and I feel like there's a bunch to talk about. Sneezyreviews did a whole 2 hours on it. Maybe if you don't get through all of it in your next video you can make a third one? Maybe a series? I'd be down to watch it all. I love watching videos on this topic. But overall you did a great job with the parallels. I think there's more you can draw as well. Like Oma and Shu in the Cave of Two Lovers and Zuko and Katara in Crossroads of Destiny. Parallels don't even scratch the surface honestly there is just so much more to talk about and explore.

I think with the whole Zuko choosing not to act I was kind of thinking the same thing you were (probably didn't say it right in the video lol) but I totally agree with you. It is because of his father and not just because he's Fire Nation. Because of his want for his father's approval, he tries to be angrier than he is or act cruel, but it's just not who he is deep down and he can't always fight that off, even as much as he tries to in order to meet his father's standards. Zuko is such a sweetheart deep down who tried to act cruel to get his father's acceptance.
I actually watched Sneezyreviews video and absolutely loved her take on it! Right now I'm editing part 2, and if I feel like I can make it a series and people would watch it, I would totally do that. There's so much to unpack with Zutara and I'm glad there are people out here willing to listen and discuss it with me!
Can't wait to watch the video! Yeah Sneezyreviews did a great job and while she did it she debunked some of the anti Zutara arguments and talked about why Kataang and Maiko don't necessarily work out well. I would love to hear your takes on those two ships as well btw.
@@alices8660 She did such a great job!! I loved her arguments debunking a lot of the reasons they shouldn't be together. I FINALLY got part 2 up!! I talk a little about these other relationships, but I don't dive deep into them in that video, but I totally could do a video over the relationships of Avatar!
I’d like to see an actual Book 4: Air that primarily deals with Zuko’s administration trying to put the world back together with Avatar Aang, the White Lotus Society and Hakoda, Sokka and Katara. But I would also like to see Aang and Katara reach a crossroads after some situations where she realizes he can’t understand her emotionally. To add to it, keep the comic struggles between Zuko and Mai. But, have Aang on a number of away missions where he’s got a few Kiyoshi Warriors assigned to him - including Ty Lee. And they have some meaningful interactions that make Aang realize his feelings towards Katara were just a “hot for teacher” crush and he really has a thing for Ty Lee. Meanwhile, Katara’s becoming quite close to The Fire Lord and both notice they compliment each other and suppress the worst character traits of both. Make the opposition from the Ozai Loyalists and other traditionalists start to build - and reach fever pitch after the rumors start spreading that The new Fire Lord is considering a “backward peasant” for the new Fire Lady. Perhaps it’s the final straw that inspires Zuko to transform the nation into a republic.
@AwayAWAY I agree with most of what you said. Except there's one problem. I'm a Taang (Toph x Aang) shipper. Lol 😂

I'm sitting here thinking about both Kataraang and Zutara because I like both and then your video pops up and I'm like "yessss. feed my obsession."
Anyways. I've made this comment to say one thing and one thing only: Kataraang would have been good if Aang had grown at all for or because of Katara's relationship with him. Zuko grew for and because of his relationship with Katara, clearly that made the ship so good, so it makes sense that Kataraang would also be better with that kind of growth. Also, I do not like how Katara was made out to be a prize for Aang instead of a partner. I'm a fan of what the ship could've been but every time I think about canon I feel so sad for Katara and Aang's relationship because the potential was missed by miles :(
no because you saying that you’ve been shipping zutara for 15 years is so me! i cannot believe we were robbed of what could’ve been! their dynamic and relationship was so great and i think it would’ve shifted the way the atla universe played out
Yes! I've been so happy to realize I'm not alone in this lol I think their dynamic would've been perfect thematically for the story as well!
Least based Zutara shipper
