  • There is nothing unusual about seeing college students and children on our campus, but HCHC recently hosted a most unusual visitor who is both a college student and a child. Eleven-year-old William (Vasilios) Maillis is one of the youngest people ever to graduate from a public high school--at the ripe old age of nine--and will soon have his associate's degree from St. Petersburg College in Florida. His long-term goal is to earn a doctorate in astrophysics and ultimately prove scientifically that God exists.
    On February 22, the HCHC community had the opportunity to hear William and his father, Fr. Peter (Panteleimon) Maillis, a graduate of both Hellenic College and Holy Cross, converse with Fr. Christopher Metropulos, HCHC President, onstage at the Maliotis Cultural Center. The conversation was the latest in a series of Presidential Encounters themed "Answering the Call" in which, Fr. Christopher explains, "We invite Orthodox Christians who are doing extraordinary things in their lives to share their experiences with us.

      Parents ought not to foist religion on their children. Just about everyone believes the religion in which they were raised is the one true faith, yet they all contradict each other - it's simply a matter of indoctrination.

    "I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the Power of God, the Salvation of everyone who believes." -Romans 1:16
    William I admire your boldness to express the reality of God through reasoning, logic, and science. Your commitment to devoting your life to studies in order to prove such a matter is incredibly noble. You will get a heck of a lot of flack and hate. People will mock and scorn you, insult you and do everything they can to say "you're wrong and I'm right and you're an idiot for disagreeing, now change your opinion so we'll respect you". It's not easy and it never will be. Keep it up, I hope to see you in major debates within the next several years :)

I spent many many hour listening to a family friend and asking questions about this and that. School and peers could never quench my thirst for answers nor could they hold my attention. We''re just logical and think outside the box. It's about simplicity because we're so complex minded that the conclusion usually is obvious.

      He’s so special that he uses his free time to create his own language. That may be found special to some. Others find established languages just as interesting such as Hebrew, Latin, and Arabic. Our King, God almighty, the only recognized, respected or observed besides his son, who some observe as the messiah and others may not, forbids all children of God to create tongue languages or speak them. Therefore, according to our monotheistic view on God, no one can be him or imitate him, that is why he is father to all of us. Someone under the faith doesn’t combine neither science with religion, create tongues or varied language, and does not take position of King God or almighty Jesus because at the end of the day, the genius or non genius must accept working for God until death, if not, he must exit the church and run for politics, but in the process not attempt to run cult(s) right under the nose of God because that is the definition of a wicked genius.

    • @Claudia-cb1nq

      Regardless, this does not take away the fact that half Brazilian William is a miracle genius who by his fathers side and the church, helps explore his many bountiful talents. He invests and receives back, he cannot bury, if he does, he must exit immediately. That applies to both William and William’s priest’s father.

If we are in a bar near our campus, we tend to be louder, we are more relaxed, and playful, etc. However, if we visit grandma's house, we tend to be more reserved. Atheists: faith has no place in science.
      Also atheists: life began as a random chemical reaction of fragile chemicals that somehow joined together whilst immersed in a substance that naturally dissolves these chemicals in the absence of a functioning cell, and mutated over long periods of time into bacteria, then eukaryotic cells, then making the leap to multicellular organisms with specialized cells, slowly became fish, which for some reason decided to try to crawl up onto land, gaining this ability via more random mutations (which, by the way, usually change, destroy, or simply copy existing information too many times, usually neutral, occasionally resulting in an outward survival advantage at the cost of a loss of information or some cellular process.) then amphibians, which, for no reason at all, diversified into reptiles, then large reptiles known today as dinosaurs (let’s forget the dinosaur soft tissue now, shall we?) mutated into birds and mammals, eventually resulting in conscious, sentient beings capable of reasoning and consciously performing mathematics and utilizing knowledge to better their situation.

    It may be the greatest challenge in this world trying to bring God into the picture of science, or vice versa. When it comes to God, we say I "believe", whereas in science we say I "observe and conclude". Science is a business at the human level. I do think that he captures this component in his discussion, which is incredible for a young person! On the other hand, I always believed that God acts in ways that are inconceivable to us and in ways that we cannot "materialize", comprehend, or verbalize. I've always surmised that God has made it this way to prove that even the common or simple minded can grasp God while the arrogant and very book smart have made fools of themselves with atheism. OK, so Im going to address and debunk his "pure gravity" concept.
    Gravity is the warping of the fabric of space-time due to a mass interacting with it as Einstein's general theory of relativity states. So if you had NO MASS or NO SPACE TIME, either one, then you can't have gravity at all. You need the two things to have gravity so absense of space time is not pure gravity, its NO gravity. The most pure, gravity can get, is in BLACK HOLES when a lot of matter is condensed into a singularity. A singularity is pretty much a point of infinite density so it is as dense as you can get, as close together as you can push matter together. Because of this, the surface area of the matter is maximally small. You can't get any smaller and because of this, the space time around it will be bent the most and hence gravity will be as strong as possible, NOT PURE. You can't get pure gravity because that would mean there is more than infinite mass and density which isn't possible. Plus, space time would rip and that is also impossible. Essentially if you visualize it, pure gravity is a hole, a 90 degree straight hole that any object will fall into and nothing will escape. The world isnt expanding into a void but it is expanding into dark matter. Dark matter is everywhere.
    AT the beginning of time before big bang, you had a singularity, where all space is in one point, the singularity. So around it, you may say is nothing. But that is impossible as there is no such thing as nothing in this universe. Around the sigularity is dark matter, somthing we don't knwo about until today. I get what the boy is saying but I think he just doesnt understand gravity fully so forgive him.

    • @JacobRy
      @JacobRy 3 роки тому

      From what i've heard, the black hole reaches a point of infinite curvature of space time, which can also be said to have infinite density. Basically, yeah, its "pure gravity" but because gravity is, as you said, just the warping of space-time, in my knowledge this statement doesn't make much sense. We hold similar sentiments.

    • @zenlev2310
      @zenlev2310 3 роки тому

      @@JacobRy Yes that is a good way to look at it. In order to get space time any more curved is impossible since its infinite curvature already in ablack hole. So technically that could itself be pure gravity or maybe we could consider this. Pure gravity would be a rip in space time.

    • @zereimu
      @zereimu 3 роки тому

      " So around it, you may say is nothing. But that is impossible as there is no such thing as nothing in this universe."
      That's sort of begging the question, nothing does not exist within the universe, but nothing can be a true concept outside of the universe. But I understand what you are trying to say. Perhaps one can argue that blackholes are not in our universe per say at all.

    • @zenlev2310
      @zenlev2310 3 роки тому +1

      @@zereimu What I meant was, that there is no such thing as nothing in this universe because wherever there is energy, information, movement, virtual particles, quantum fluctuation, the list goes on, then that is something. In this universe, there is not one spot, where there is 'nothing' meaning an absence of anything or any existence. Nothing can be used to describe what is outside our universe. There is no space outside the universe. Therefore you can say that there is an absolute absence outside and therefore nothing.
      No, Black holes do exist. they very well exist in our universe. They have been photographed and observed in activity. Black holes are the most mysterious and powerful things in the universe besides dark energy and dark matter. A black hole is essentially just a spot where the displacement of space time is at it's limit, beyond which, space time would rip and a void would be created. Its a very long and steep hole, so steep, light can't escape. It occurs when a HUGE amount of mass is condensed into a singular one dimensional point, in which space and time are synchronised and does not change. Imagine the earth condesned into a drop of water. That drop of water would be so small but so heavy, anything that it falls on will stretch so far. That drop of water would be able to go through concrete, go through oceans, the ground. It would be the most powerful drop of water. That is what a space time singularity is. Its a spot where so much mass is put into one point, that space and time bend to the limit around it and inside it, come to a halt/stop. You basically have a very deep dark hole.

This is our most serious limitation. I understand the philological and linguistic part of it to a certain extent ( I am a music teacher by profession) but I certainly can't go any near to proving it scientifically. I can't imagine the profound sense of disappointment he's going to experience when he learns more about science and realizes the myriad flaws in his theory here. (i.e. he says there "must be" an absence of space time outside of the universe. No. There doesn't necessarily have to be. It might just be different in ways our current technology can't measure.)
    There was another teen a few years back being given the same credit for saying there must be a God if there are an infinite number of universes representing all possibilities. The problem with that, of course, is that there is no law saying an infinite number of universes represent all possibilities. I actually came up with the same theory about a decade before that kid was even born and a good friend pointed out my mistake while that kid was still in his diapers.
    But he was led to believe he was "the first genius to ever think of it".

One of the many things we will never fully have the wisdom to understand is this mystery we calls God. God is different things to different people, but it's ultimately just a word we use to describe something beyond our comprehension, and no words in our language ( a human creation) can fully describe the spiritual/mystical experience. You will understand how much we don't fully understand, if you ever have a spiritual awakening and reach enlightenment. It's something your mind will not see until you can have a new perspective. Depends what he means, gravity is the curvature of space-time, but the absence of space-time has no definition in modern science. Maybe he's proposing that spacetime causes the displacement in itself, creating some sort of order against the phenomena we see as gravity or something.

    • @zenlev2310
      @zenlev2310 3 роки тому +2

      @@zereimu Space time can not be displaced by itself. It simply cannot.
      Space time is simply a fabric. Displacement of space time is caused when a mass interacts with the space time. Visualise the ball and rubber sheet. The rubber sheet doesn't bend itself. A ball must push down on it. For example if the earth disappeared, the displacemenr would not occur. When you step into a bathtub, water displaces. Step out of it and water levels back to normal. Space time can only be displaced by masses. E.g Earth, Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Planets, Stars, Rocks.
      And yeah, there is no such thing as an absence of space time, there can only be flat space time and curved space time which is gravity. Just like water cannot displace itself, space time cannot displace itself. Space time is everywhere in the universe, its the platform for things to exist and to interact.
      Regarding the expansion of this universe. He said that our universe is expanding into a void of pure gravity. That pure gravity concept I already explained in my previous comments, its incorrect. But essentially he is saying we are expanding into a void(nothing) hence we are not expanding and we are falling like water off a cliff. Actually, what is happening when we talk about our universe expanding or cosmic inflation is that our space time fabric is stretching like a balloon. Some say that dark matter actually creates new space, I disagree with that as an astrophysicist myself. But yes the dark matter and energy is what's causing our universe to expand. But we are not expanding into a void. Our universe is just getting larger but never going into the void. Nothing ever goes into the voids unless we rip the spacetime.

      DrawingsSkill You have not understood some basic things. This child expressed an opinion and too many in the comments reject his reasoning simply because it differs with their own reasoning. It is a pure matter of selfishness and nothing else. Surely this can be found in people who are religious, but nowadays it is more common for atheists to mock them. The atheists themselves are convinced that it is impossible to prove the existence of God precisely because their study focuses purely on the materialistic part of the universe. It is now proven that the universe we measure and study is simply a false image that our 5 senses create because of the limited human perception and physiology. So how are atheists so confident about their so-called based on the measurements of a universe that is just a false image? About God's existence have spoken and have approached with great logic many great philosophers of the past such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Rene and many others. The simplest logical explanation they gave is that very simply as you are a finite entity and with your mind you create things around you, in the same way a mind was the one that created a world governed by laws and natural rules that contradicts chaos and randomness. I would like to ask you to look for Aristotle and Plato at the same time that the attitude of the world today is increasingly embracing the materialism that it has and as a result the moral decay we experience as a civilization today. The little one on the video said it. It needs more faith to believe that there is no God than there is.

      You are wrong.
      Atheism needs no faith. Faith is needed to believe when you have no evidence to prove your belief.
      Atheism, on the other hand, is the absence of belief.
      You make no sense.

      Mike T atheism is a claim that has not been proven. If you would have said agnosticism requires no faith you would have been correct.

    I agree with the logic the boy presents. Note, he is not the first person to present this line of reasoning. I can accept a creating power/energy/consciousness/force/expression/element etc.. However the problem I have is when we call this *'something'* 'God' people bring their own beliefs on what or who God is. They forge this *Creating Entity* to confirm their personal beliefs, scriptures or thinking. We then get to the question of what is God. This is where the discussion falls apart every time and we end up in an argument of who has the correct definition of God.

    William, don't be put off by the naysayers. What you are undertaking my very well be impossible. Proofs are not easy things, especially scientific proofs. Consider Kepler's Conjecture for example. With a gift comes amazing responsibility. And while some, as below, will say you will abandon your conviction to pursue God, and Truth, don't ever stop doing that. One of Hawking's understudies who lived with him for a year, actually found greater depth of meaning in his personal faith through his studies and was not taken for the ride that so many have experienced, ultimately abandoning their faith. I personally know numbers of scientists, some astrophysicists, who continue to pursue their disciplines and continue to have an ever growing faith. Just don't buy into the concept that faith and science are somehow mutually exclusive. It's just not true. I look forward to seeing your "proof" develop.

      He challenged nothing and threw around terms in his word salad. If you carefully read what he said it is mostly jibberish and the science parts have several very serious incorrect statements - especially his comments on gravity. If you strip it all away this is the prime mover argument with some quantum woo woo to make him look smart. He even turns to his Dad who prompts him to talk about the part.....

    Those are the kind of games that my son also loves to play, like "Europa Universalis 4"... That's why I know, what kind of games was talking about... He said: "What IF Constantinople never fell?"... I'll like to ask him an "alternate personal history" question: What if your parents were not religious? what if you were born in agnostic or atheist's family? That possibility can change completely what he is trying to prove or believe. It's of course a lot of inluence from his parents, and of course! That's normal!... But what IF...?

      If he could prove there was a being that created the universe that people would call "god", there would still need to be proof of it's character or qualities. To say, "May god continue to bless him," is just assuming it's the "god" you think it is.

      @@jimmyhoang9507 You are an idiot, dear. "Buddah and Laotzu" came after the canaanites, aka babylonians, and were just part of the TALE to play human beings. The Creator cannot be Defined but animate does not come from inanimate. You WISH there isn't a Creator because then you can do whatever you want without fear of consequences, that's all.
