One thing I forgot to mention is this is a 2022 model. It seems to be the same as the 2023 and unlike some 2023 K2 boards it seems to have the same super fast carbon infused base. So this didn't get the downgrade.
They should have definitely left the excavator alone and kept it the same as 2022
@@timhunt7155 And thanks to this type of chat I am finalizing a '22 158 Excavator purchase - phew! I really enjoyed the base of the Alchemist on those connector trails and would dislike a step down.
As you say the Pleasures is a chattery board once the soft snow groom disappears - I've had to put it away after one run more than a few times. I do enjoy the easy surfy turns on soft snow though so won't sell it. Maybe the Excavator will do the similar but be more damp🍀
How different in terms of % is the 5500 carbon base compared to Alchemist/Excavtor 4001 base for speed?
I’ve been riding one for a few years. Started w the simple pleasures. I love this thing. It’s a beast. It charges insanely hard. Through any terrain I can absolutely slash down the mountain with ease. Easy to navigate in tight spaces, hit challenging lines, massive pop out to jump anything. One of my favs.

Im 135lbs and ride the 151. Rode it in trees and open trails at PowMow in about 2ft on a demo and loved it! Drfinitely has some pop and can be fun and surfy for the right rider. Volume shifted boards are great in the right circumstances for the right people. For reference i wear a womens 8 K2 boot and rode this +18/0 reference.

Thanks for your review, it was very insightful. I'm looking for a pow board and this was one of the boards I'm considering. Is this board too wide for me? I'm size 7 Men's, ~170 lb dry, 5'9". Thank you.
This could work but there are others that could as well. Being a size 7 makes it more tough to size a board for your weight and to a lesser extent your height. You might want to hit me up here to get into more detail and I'll have better suggestions for you.
Hey James, thanks for the review. I'm 5'11", 170lbs, size 8.5 boots. Would you suggest sizing up to the 156cm? Other rides are 154 Excavator, 156 Nitro squash. Looking for something a bit more poppy/energetic for carving, popping rollers, etc. Thanks!
No problem. I would for sure size up to the 156 on this as it's pretty light, chattery but easy to turn. Especially with what you ride and I assume you like now.

Same shape but that is about it. This is lighter and much more poppy but far less damp.

No. Same shape and camber. Just a different flex personality. The Nisseko has more pop and is lighter but just not as good as the regular Simple Pleasures in uneven snow. It bucks, bounces and chatters more.

I don't know about percentage but it is a very noticeable difference. There is a good bit more glide with the 5500 carbon vs. the 4401. I wish all high end K2 boards had this base.
@@thegoodridesnowmy 2001 Alchemist has the fast base - these past few years it has been changed - not sure why K2 has to disrespect riders' needs. Maybe the fast base needs more waxing?
@@gboates personally I find the faster bases to need less waxing. Sadly I think most board companies cater to those that don’t know the difference and just want a cheaper price tag. What would be cool is if they at least offered a high end version for those that do want that performance advantage.
I own the 151 and feel like that’s a good size for me at my 145 pound weight. I’m considering getting an excavator for something that’s more for charging. Do you think I should size up to the 154 or go to the 150.
That sounds like a good fit for your weight. What is your boot size and height?

Yeah the 150 Excavator would be a good fit. Especially if you like the 151 Niseko Pleasures. This will be more damp and aggressive but that is the right size for you. If you went to the 154 it might be too much board for you to turn in anything but clean/pristine conditions. The 147 is way too narrow.

If you had to pick one. Powgoda or Excavator? Any other board I should consider for a stable pow deck that can also shred groomers? Need something that doesn't buck me around so much.
I’m a rider with a surfing background and goofy footed so I tend to ride strongly in my front foot. Are there boards/brands that favor that better?

How many times are you going to review a too small a board for your weight and height... ??? Serious question!
If you are seriously asking, here is my take based on the 600+ boards I reviewed over more years that I care to mention. Maybe this will help others as well.
Boot size is most critical when sizing a board. Weight is second and height a distant third. If my size 9 feet are too far from the edges I can't figure out what the sidecut is doing. If I can't figure out what the sidecut is doing I can't figure out how a board turns which is what we mostly do when we ride. Weight and height can help you leverage a boards sidecut but not as much as your feet. I can easily figure out a boards flex personality if I'm too heavy or too light. However, sidecuts are the most complicated part of understanding a board. Especially because most brands don't publish what is really going on with the sidecut radius. Brands don't have a lot of boards to demo and don't always have a size that fits me perfectly. So if it comes down to weight vs. boot size I generally give boot size the priority because that best helps my viewers who request I review em.
I noticed you didn't mention your boot size in previous comments so it doesn't help people on the channel understand your take.
Finally, I was within the suggested weight range for the 151 Niseko Pleasures. I thought the construction was the same as the Alchemist and Excavator, which by the way, I sized correctly in my other reviews. As a matter of fact the 154 Excavator I reviewed has the same weight recommendations as the 151 Niseko Pleasures. K2 usually makes damp boards so the Niseko Pleasures was an anomaly. I don't think there is another K2 board this light and chattery in their line.
@@thegoodridesnow I appreciate the time you took to reply. To lead in let me say that quantity (600 boards) does not always relate to quality. You are correct about the side cut. The 162 SL Kessler has a clothoid curve on their side cut. My Alchemist feels like it has the same or maybe a more simple 'blended' side cut now that it has broken in. . Running length and effective edge and board width all play a strong role in each SIZE of a particular board type in that their dynamic force vectors, working with board speed and g-force, determine how the side cut is applied to the snow and the overall feel of the 'ride'. Some boards are meant to be ridden hard and fast and others to kick around the bumps and lumps and others for a hero powder ride. Stiffness ratings are usually accurate and as a fast rider I find that a small amount of non optimal board width can be compensated for by adjusting forward binding angles until the bite you are looking for appears as you engage the toe. Too wide a deck and the transition from toe to heel is slower than the forward speed allows as you seem to indicate.
I also find that it takes quite a lot of time and effort to adjust binding position, binding angle, boot position within the binding, and if going posi posi or old school freestyle angles. Finding binding position front to back and foot width relating to the contact points of the side cut (centred a little back or a little forward of the camber contact pts.) and type of riding you are thinking you will do that day given the conditions - it's complicated but can be super rewarding. So with my average height and weight and boot size (10.5) I often find myself three feet off the snow falling down the hill with my board just carving enough to keep it from all going off the rails!
Sorry for the terseness of the reply but i feel that you often choose the smaller board and say you could have ridden the next size up but... I would like to hear the opposite from time to time.

Forward lean, stance angles and positioning cant really compensate for a smaller boot size. I have done extensive testing on that and It can only help a little. Size 9 vs 10.5 is a very big difference and it seems you discount our boot difference greatly. Not finding the right size boot for a board is the biggest problem in the industry when sizing a board.
Maybe I have ridden too many boards but thats been my job since 2006. Seems like you only reference 3 boards over several years so maybe we could each learn from one another.
Flex ratings are often inconsistent and inaccurate industry wide. They are just alot easier to figure out vs sidecuts. Hopefully you can discern what the next size up will feel like for you based on my description. Going wider for me isnt as easy as it is for you.
Ok Im getting back on the chair lift and thanks for your engagement. Hopefully those that read this will get something out of it as there are many ways to ride a board.
Would you rather he pretended like he nailed it on the sizing, and reviewed it negatively without mentioning he should’ve sized up? He’s reviewing hundreds of boards and has to make an educated guess.
