Adidas boasts a universe of designer collaborations, and fashion is now linked with sportswear more closely than ever before. Adidas and Yohji Yamamoto together created Y-3, the original sports fashion collab that still exists today after a 20-year history. What can it tell us about designer fashion collabs today? I’m going to admit I’m a 58-year-old man, who found a great Y3 hoodie at my local consignment store. Is an insane price, and the quality, fabrics, color and styling at one of my most interesting pieces. I’m a fairly strident minimalist, and this gray and black actually fits into my pallete. I’ve already gotten some comments of praise for wearing it.
Love Y-3 but it's often just Adidas quality and manufacturing with luxury price tag, so I understand why people might refrain from it. On top of that because of the number of different items required for each season some pieces are too sportswear-like for something that is not performance oriented, while others are not practical at all to wear for the average consumer. The lack of seasonal concept makes it very difficult to get emotionally invested in the diffusion line. My personal favourite Y-3 fit is much more Yohji than Adidas while some other favourite pieces include the Adidas Y-3 Runner 4D, which to me, is a beautiful blend of both design languages.
The 4D runners are so good! It would be cool to see a more stripped back and focused collection for sure (and this is what some of the capsules like Y-3 Sport or Y-3 Atelier do)
I love Y-3 and I wear their stuff all of the time. Recently picked up a hat from their Palace collab in T.K. Maxx for less than £20. Their Real Madrid collab has been amazing recently too.
Yeah Y3 stuff occasionally pops up on the TK website and it almost always immediately sells out. I picked up the white Y3 / Stephen Doherty 'Y-3 CH3 Raw Terry Logo Hoodie' from TK for next to nothing a couple weeks back and it's one of my recent favourites.

i come from not such a good family regarding the finances, but when i was a kid, i saw a neighour of mine and he was wearing some y-3 clothes. i told myself that when i ll grow i want to be like him, 10 years later im obsessed with y-3 and im the happiest whenever i get something from them. crazy good quality. totally recommend. but please dont bring the hype to y-3, lets keep it to ourselves. much love to everyone
Y-3 is where I buy most of my pants. If you are a larger man who wants something close to Yohji's mainline stuff, y-3 is the only place I know of that makes something that fits me. This has got me wanting to make a video, I will ride or die for this brand lmao
Yes! Looking at Yohji pant sizing in the past things always look like they'd be too short for me. Would love to hear more from fans of Y-3 so let me know if you do!
Yohji's main line size range isn't bad. They're actually known for being more accommodating than most designer brands. I recommend shopping in a physical Yohji store, and asking for more sizes. (Bonus points - Call ahead and ask them to pull a rack in your size.) They don't do large sizes in every piece, but they definitely do some. They also don't seem to show up online. I've seen other brands do this. They'll carry up to like a 3X in some items, but only go up to 1X online. You occasionally see larger pieces on consignment sites, but that's also rare. Presumably because people buy stuff and don't want to let it go.
@@ThisIsAntwon Their pants tend to run long, unless they're deliberately shorter by design. I have a 36 inch inseam, and I can wear some Yohji pants because they're designed to be slouchy.
Loving Y-3 since I got an interest in fashion. No hype is great, we can get so many nice pieces for 20% of retail. I mean, they had many ups and then downs, but recently Y-3 team is doing a really good job.

I've been collecting Y-3 since 2016 and this video encapsulates a lot of my feelings about the brand. Even though I mostly go for Yohji mainline/diffusions nowadays Y-3 will always have a place in my heart and closet.
Y-3 is seriously underrated! It's my absolute favorite collaboration. Can't wait for it to blow up again, anyone who doesn't have one is missing out big time!
So when I first got SERIOUSLY into fashion 1 year ago, I bought a pair of Y-3 Terrex Swift R3 shoes. I love them. But every time I look at Y-3 I'm reminded of how sporadically interesting they are.
When you showed that collection of pictures from various seasons over the years and said they're from all over 2 decades, I was like "yeah makes sense." Especially over the last few years, there'll be one or two great items per season, filled up with bland and uninspired "logo streetwear."
There is for sure a mix of interesting and...not interesting. The Swift R3 are a cool shoe though, good choice

Y-3 Qasa is the first pair that got me into the sneakers world. Fast forward to now, I still have quite many pairs in the collection. I would say Y-3 is still one of the few designers are actually still innovating. 😎 great video!

Last year there was a great purge of Y-3 stock and I bought tons of shoes & clothing directly from Adidas outlet and through eBay resell. Quality is great and when the pieces are 80-90%off, they are worth it. Kaiwa for less than $100 and Goretex jacket for less th $150, I had a chance to experience the brand in a 360 deg way and can have just Y-3 fits for days. For me it is an entry point for Syte and Ground Y, so I am happy. I have more Y-3 than Adidas gear now and that tells a lot.
I think there is also like a self created competition. Y-3 and Adidas x Yohji are both a thing. and looking at old Adidas x Yohji collabs, they are so good like the jeans with the leather(?) 3 stripes on the back, 2002 Mules and Prajna shows, they are so dope

For as long as I've followed this brand, I've always thought "I'll wait for the 50% off sale" when I see something I like. Then the sale comes around and I never buy anything. That's the cycle I think hurts the brand so much. They set themselves up to not sell anything fast with the constant sales
Y-3 is one of my favorites! Not always the most functional and I agree they've felt a little auto-pilot lately, but they really have some gems and classic silhouettes as well. I've had that padded parka for a few years now and didn't know about the double zip or reversible function. 😮 Thanks for the awesome vid!

back when I was into streetwear, Japanese cut & sewn stuff like Yohji offered was an obsessed, I bought the shoes like crazy, Qasa, the boost, jackets, shirts, etc from Y-3 in droves & always appreciated the quality & the way it fit, if I ever were to delve back into this area of clothing I would definitely be looking at their offerings.
Fantastic video as always. Really interesting how much my personal interest in Y-3 seems to have matched other people's. Years and years ago Y-3, and especially the Qasas definitely started my eventual journey into techwear, but there were a solid few years where I wasn't seeing anything particularly interesting from them (although apparently perhaps it just passed me by). It wasn't until I randomly started seeing their 2024 offerings on Instagram that i was interested in them again.
Overall great video about an interesting brand that also ties in a very relevant aspect of consumer fashion. Loved it.

good video! i collected a lot of y-3 immediately after getting into secondhand/fashion in general. there is so much to explore on grailed especially if you wear a size small. i like the early stuff 2003-2005 & the 2008-2013 era where things got really experimental. the new stuff feels like a revival but also feels a bit too safe and minimal. i've stopped collecting as i've leaned into more experimental avant-garde brands like army of me and first aid to the injured.
I don't know anything about street fashion much less mens fashion (as a woman lol) but I appreciate how well-structured and in-depth your videos are!
Y-3 shoes are amazing. They are a good deal on sale. Same prices as nike but super interesting. I got the yuben, kozoko low and rivalry. The marathon trail in that gray concrete color is dope too.

y-3 cargos are still my favourites to this day. The cuffing on them is a godsend for team short. Theyve been through so much use because of how wearable they and are still holding up.

frugal aesthetic really blows my mind
I bought a y3 sweatshirt 3 years, the cut is so nice and I wear it at least twice a week.. easily one of my favorite garments
I do like the jacket, the side adjustments aren't my thing but I'm quite thick. My last pickup was an outdoor research dark grey goretex. It's on the border between gorpy and techy but could flex in either direction in my opinion. I'd recommend Outdoor research and beyond clothing as two very underrated brands with quality rooted in military special operations contracts and designs both simple and striking that I think you may enjoy a look at. A fine marriage between function and form that might really be something you enjoy.
Finally. An Antwon and Frugal crossover. And it's just as serious as expected
I have some vintage Y3, superb quality and design. Like any other brands logos are the bread and butter of high fashion labels, buy less but better designs that speaks for the designer you enjoy wearing most and think style over the F word, it endures all the boring times of the ephemeral trends.

I’ve found myself coming back to the 2015-2016 ultra boost / season 3 era aesthetic a lot lately. I’m also a bit adverse to the resurgence of the baggy 90s look coming back in a lot of style right now. I was a young teen when Jnco and that baggy aesthetic was new, and I have no desire to relive it 😂

I have a few Y-3 pieces and a couple pairs of kicks, I think my most-worn is the 'Y-3 Utility Pant', which has a wide-leg / cinched-cuff Japanese aesthetic and several cargo pockets, they are a lot lighter weight than some of my other tech pants and work well in the summer evenings. Like Ant says, I picked them up in the sales for probably half-price, can't argue with that. Paired with the Y-3 GR.1P White/Black lowtops it was a staple look for the middle of last year.
Half price a lot of the clothing genuinely ends up being really nice for what you're paying! Pants sound perfect 👌
About 1/2 of my wardrobe is Y-3 and I wear at least one piece per day, if not more. The build quality and materials used (esp in pre-2020 seasons) are super elevated and interesting if you dig around the archives. For example, I have a light jacket from I think 2018 that has a cotton/paper (yes, paper 🤯) front side, a perforated polyester back side, a comically huge detachable hood (big enough to fit a small child), and huge pockets inside of other huge pockets for no reason lol. I feel like an actual athleisure vampire in it and it has a beautiful drape. It’s also comfy af
But there are def a lot of logo-focused duds over the last few years especially. The 2024 stuff is wild tho and I’m excited for their future 🌀 I’ve even worn Y-3 blazers and light jackets/long shirts to formal events like weddings and ppl were asking me about the pieces since even their more basic stuff has elements of surprise and interest. Obvi huge Y-3 stan here 😭💅🏼 need to make more videos about them for my channel!

I first laid eyes on Y-3 brand back when I was in High school. I couldn’t afford it back then. Now that I have adult money, I no longer desire the brand. It looks cool seeing the Y-3 print on bags but id rather spend my money elsewhere.

I was into Y-3 15 years ago and have since sold my items on. It was fresh back then but looks so normal today. I try to avoid collabs in general anyway.

Love Y-3 will always be rocking it, hi tech fashion with athletic aesthetics, one of the only reason why I would buy an adidas product. Diffently will stand out and turn heads wearing Y-3. Y-3 and Guerrilla Group my go to.
have some older y-3 runway pieces that i absolutely ADORE, but y-3 as a brand dumbing down their silhouettes from 2021-2023 really made it hard to want to keep up with them. glad they're going back to their roots a bit aesthetically lol.

Y-3 used to be great, but it's gotten super boring on a retail level. The campaigns and promo photos all look great, but that's mostly really good styling. They used to have tons of interesting pieces. Now it's just cheap synthetic basics with some very mild tweaks costing more than they should. The pieces used to be something between Yohji quality and Adidas quality. Now they're basically all Adidas quality, but for a good bit more money.
I had some pieces from y3 that I sold, they looked cool but felt uncomfortable to wear. Such as the slingback sandals. Anyway, this video like most of what you put out is clean af so keep at it Antwon.
I don't wear Y-3 at all, but I do like seeing the random ass sneakers they make throughout the year. Every now and then they actually make some decent stuff. Only issue is I don't wanna pay retail for em because by summer/fall they can be had for 50%-70% off.

When I discovered and took the deep plunge into techwear/streetwear/cyberpunk several years ago, I also became a bit of a sneakerhead. Footwear was (and still is) such a major focus for me, and Y-3 was probably the first I took notice of. But I wear a men's US 14, and sadly, Y-3 never seemed to go past 12. So, that kinda sucks, because I still think Y-3 shoes are pretty dope.

Y3 has a very loyal and warm community. I've been complimented on my y3 pieces several times which led to fun conversations with fellow fans. I also love how Y3 elevates adidas staples like the stan smith, superstar, and gazelle. To me, Y3s are the ultimate version of those respective shoes. I do agree however that the brand can do with fewer plain logo tees and stuff like that. (Emphasis on plain) they have some shirts with asymmetrical pannel details that are quite cool and distinctive.
Love Y-3 and yamamoto's darkwear style but it's a little too casual for my style at that price point.
Y-3 is innovative in sneaker designs which I like. I don't like what ppl wear on the streets bc I have my own style. I started going to the gym again and I wanted to wear sportswear. I do like Y-3, I just wish they wouldn't stamp their logo everywhere.

i've followed y-3 since maybe 2011, and while the pieces don't really work with how i've dressed over the past few years (or really, even back then when i was mostly hunting junya & related comme brands) i've kept a few pieces-a few shirts, some trousers, two jackets? and all of them are really fun, comfortable things to wear. a lot of it just full on feels like sportswear textiles in yohji shapes, other things are the polar opposite-standard adidas styles in really strange textiles with some additional detailing, like this track jacket i own in double layered gauze (?) jersey with some wool mixed into the ribbing and extra zippered pockets. while i don't wear the pieces as much nowadays, they'll still see use from time to time and i really appreciate what the brand offers. also want to mention this old chambray zip up jacket i have that's got a wild double layered placket thing that's half droopy cowlneck, half blazer with military/hunting detailing. i think that's from ss09

If you were a fan back in 2013 then you know the best shoe to ever drop was the Y-3 Kubos low, hands down thee best shoe to ever release.
Are we talking about the same Y-3 Yamamoto? I find it very successful, going on for 21 years! Plus I check his collections frequently and they are mostly sold out. Y-3 is not for bling bling influencers, better!
Adidas did a Muppets collab several years ago. I bought the Kermits (Kermit The Frog). I got a lot of compliments.
I do like some of the Y-3. I also like Fear of God, but wasn't sure the price was worth it. However, may try a piece or two because of this vid.
My favorite athletic collab. Puma and Alexander McQueen. I have to see, if I can still get them.
