A Men's 65's , National Indoor match between Brent Abel, sixth seed, and Mike Lammens. An experiment in commentary as we both view the video in different locations and share our thoughts on the match. Brent Abel has won several gold balls (National Championships) while Mike Lammens has done well in the Colorado and Intermountain area. Great video and play. Thanks for inspiring a 58 year old to continue to play vets tournaments
You bet! 58 isn't that old!
Great playing, guys! Impressive serving, power, volleying, touch, court coverage.
Thanks!
Great play, Mike, especially that 7th game of the 1st set👌
Thanks! 👍Brent is one tough cookie though and showed why he's ranked at the top of the heap.
Looks like a nice indoor facility with viewing for the fans through the glass. That racquet Brent uses is HUGE, but he handles it well and seems to have smoother form of the two though I love the serve-and-volley
Yes, I would like to know what that racquet is! The way he beat me, it was probably illegal!! :)
Must have been the racquet, I love your serve and volley style, very old school and the way I like to play too
It looks like a WEED 125 EX by the color and shape.
@@TimothyMoke thanks, I do remember the Weed racquets
Good playing Mike, good match. You played well. Enjoyed it.
‘Thank you. It’s a lot of fun to run around like that and play a great player like Brent Abel.
Very nice tennis. I wish i could play this smoothly. I just turned 60 and i am trying to improve my game. But i only play twice a week.
Brent, do you have any videos from this week’s Wilson tournament? I would like to see the 60-65 guys! Especially Andy Stoner who won 60’s! I saw you made the finals this week! 🎉
Game 7! What a game!!!
You can't beat the best with a one hander for the most part. Glen Busby is world 💯 champ with a solid one handed backhand.
Congratulations to Brent who just won 🥇 75 Nationals in California
Not enough topspin on forehand and backhand to compete against the top guys in 55,60,65. I think Abel just won nationals for 75!
Great match!! I have a question? Have you switched in recent years to an abbreviated
service motion? I noticed Jimmy Parker is using one as well. I am beginning to think
that makes a great deal of sense for the senior player.I have some shoulder issues
and I am making the switch.
I find it interesting the wide range of equipment choices with senior players. You
have super os like Brent and Jimmy Parker to heavy players stick for Brian Chaney.
What were you using in this match? Again thanks for the posts I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your work. KUDOS!!!
Hey Ron, thanks for the comments. On that service motion, I just don't see the need for all that hoopla before you get to the "trophy" or backscratch position. I mean, if you are going to stop there anyway, like most players do, what good does it do to go through all that prior motion? If you watch Patrick Rafter (he's my favorite all time pro) , he's kind of like that too, and I think subconsciously that I copied his serve. My biggest concession to the shoulder is to toss the ball more out in front, let it descend lower, and hit more of a slice instead of trying to hit a topspin. Helps prevent impingement and doesn't seem to affect my serve very much. Easier on the back too!
Yes, I feel more control and better able to place my serve due to the abbreviated motion. Velocity doesn't seem to be affected.
In regards to the abbreviated service motion , Vic Brandon also advocated the shorter motion that he compared to throwing a football. He used many cross references to other sports and incorporated them into his tennis teaching methods. I liked to use some of his ideas in my teaching and coaching. The direct racquet up and ready to hit is also easy for young players. In my old age (71) I have done a lot of USTA 10 and under teaching for my local USTA Community Tennis Association so I some experience with this.
Nearly all seniors, including me, use shorter swings, both on serves and volleys. Otherwise too much stress on joints and core. It is so easy to throw your back out on a serve if you don’t have a strong core. Hip and shoulder injuries can easily happen, especially with repetitive motions. I was a division one wrestler in Big Ten and now play tennis. I do lots of strength training and still fight the injury bug. Just like many of my senior friends playing tennis.
How do you qualify for Nationals?
Just sign up. I've never heard of a qualification. Just $$. But most people don't (unless it is local) because the level of competition is pretty high and it would be a waste of money to travel a long ways just to get killed the first round. Of course, you would then know where the bar is set and how much you'll have to work to be competitive.
You've got a really solid wrist up at net.
Thanks, it was one of my better volley days. I think playing Brent made me play better.
how many hours do you guys play a week (on average) Im asking because I have a limit otherwise my game suffers.
Most seniors I know play, including myself, play about 4 or 5 times a week, so maybe 8 hours? But half of that is doing drills. I think some of these top players do more.
@@10smike thank you
their fitness is very impressive
Thanks, that was a long time ago. Would love to get back into that kind of shape! Working on it.
Brent has good forms on all shots for a 65+ year old
For a 65+ year old only? I bet a lot of younger guys would appreciate having his form and abilities! :) Just saying....
Woah, isn't that Lifetime Fitness?
What makes you think that?
@@10smike Probably because the courts are so nice? There are some beautiful ones here in Plano, Tx and one I played in Oklahoma City. Really high ceilings.
Is this in slow motion?
Yes, I slowed it down to half speed so you can catch all the action. Otherwise wouldn't be able to see the fancy footwork...
@@10smike It's interesting I feel like I'm flying across the court until I watch the my video and see I have lead legs. Gotta fix that! Maybe it's my iPhone 8 camera making it occur that way. I certainly hope so. May need to invest in a good camera to get accurate speed?
Seems the double handed bkhands all but disappear with age.
Yeah, too much effort. And most of us senior players learned the slice to begin with.
