    This video is really timely, I'm trying to build an audience on twitter so people will consider commissioning me, I opened my commission sheet back in July and I asked myself what is wrong with my art? Why people won't commission me, is it my art style? Then I asked my friends of they have criticisms about my art and they didn't really say anything though they asked why I asked all of a sudden then I told them I'm trying to find why people won't commission me, they said that it has definitely nothing to do with my art and that I shouldn't conform to what people will like, and that really struck me hard cuz I have been really insecure with people around me seeing that they get commissioners and stuff, I should really be patient about it and let it take it's time

    Gonna add another comment: I'm actually very much looking forward to the "Let's make an animated pilot" series of videos--I'm probably not ever going to go down that road myself (I'm more into comics than animation, as a creator) but that does sound like a FASCINATING process that I'd love to learn more about (and I'm looking forward to Stormfellers itself also!!!)!

    When you mentioned the stormfellers making of video series, I literally said "OOH" out loud and got weird looks from my coworkers lol.
    I definitely feel the statements about the anxieties from following art news--i sometimes kind of wish I could take a pill that would make me stop caring about this stuff, but I know that's unhelpful.
    Projects saved my life, no lie--i'd be nothing without my ambition to make games and comic projects. Good advice! (Tho lately all my project ideas are imo not really pushing me to improve my art much--ack)

    I have been struggling with this since starting Grad school a few weeks ago. I've been scrambling to get my footing again, and the one thing that's helped with my assignments is themeing them all towards the same story. While it's not quite a Project per se, I at least know what I'm working towards as the semester progresses

    Having projects to work on definitely helps me a lot! For me this usually takes the form of holiday themed drawings for Halloween, Fourth of July, Christmas, etc. It certainly helps motivate me to iterate on my characters given the deadline. In some cases, even unforeseen events have provided inspiration.

    I've been returning to work on my comic - as well as reading graphic novels for inspiration - and other art projects after getting overwhelmed by my day job and then getting extremely sick by COVID-19. Even though things are intense and I've considered just quitting art after seeing the AI thing blow up and now that I am going back to grad school to become a counselor, I think creating art, consuming art, and listing to videos like this one from artists have helped me with alot with my mental health.

    Perfectly said about AI Art… it’s truly awful. I’ve made many a similar point amongst my peers about the crappy direction it’s going to lead us to.
    It’s a shame so many people argue “its just a tool like 3D” but it’s really not… 3D, photobashing, digital art all still take skill. Typing prompts requires none.

    I can't agree more on project-based work. I have found for me personally, it has really allowed me to keep up my momentum and churn out works of a quality I am satisfied with. And allows me to enjoy of the process as it is primarily for me.
    Also I knew about AI art essentially being a shredder and reconstuction tool but I hadn't realised it was designed as a way to stiff artist. Personally I'm not too worried about it at this stage as I think its more limited then people realise on the surface but can be used as a way to come to an understanding with clients during pre-production stages. Or just a general spring board when conceptualising

    • @smm855
      @smm855 Рік тому +1

      I agree that AI is probably going to eventually morph into a pre-production/spring board sort of thing. I feel the average person (ie the non-artist) often have problems communicating to an artist what they're looking for. You often get useless descriptors like "make it feel tribal" or "it needs to be firmer" or "can you make it 20% cooler?" 😂 I think using AI art could help get a client to communicate their 'vibe' before you, as an artist, have to put in too much work that will only get scrapped cause the client can't communicate. It does really irk me that it uses existing images, but obviously there's not a way around that...I just wish that when the AI generated the images that you could click something like "see inspiration" and see a list of the artists/links/art that was pulled to create the image and that it would give the artists money for that (obviously will never happen, but I can dream)

    • @unaninated
      @unaninated Рік тому

      @@smm855 Exactly, but i think hopefully all that stuff gets ironed out before you start refining the image. And that's a great idea about the source images used in the generation process. As the can help with crediting artists and be used as a moldboard in itself

    On AI art I was talking to another artist about it and I remember when fractal "art" first came out. It exploded with posters, shirts, etc, etc. Then the fad faded and it got relegated to history. AI art will go the same way.

    • @bleeblequilfus1376
      @bleeblequilfus1376 Рік тому +5

      I've heard the topic brought up as well. Honestly I think it's possible that, if AI keeps developing and advancing, commercial art might become more automated. Realistically it would probably still need some touching up- which would be cheaper for companies that go that route- and best case scenario it'll only really be used as automated conceptualization. On the flip side, I will say I think it's an interesting new prospect that artists could use to conceptualize a piece of art or otherwise as inspiration, and in that way a cool new tool for artists. In any case though, it's not gonna get rid of human art. Oh, and just generating an image and calling it done doesn't make anyone an artist.

    I wish this advice was enough, and sometimes it is, but my own late-realised ADHD brain is not playing ball. I used to write and draw without it being in the way, these days I have bursts of oomph and then I’m often done for weeks, it’s frustrating and sad. Over time with everything I’ve already put in to dealing with anxiety, maybe it’ll improve and I’m hoping for treatment. I have a project, the characters had chapters written about them years ago, it was easier then and it goes cold when it stays in my head for too long. Occasionally I flirt with the idea of doing some animation and wonder if I could a whole thing by myself, it’s amazing that you’re doing that and with voice actors, the dream.

    So, there is something about AI art that a lot of people either don't think about or don't know. In the American system, AI art can not be copyrighted.

  • @spaceshippatio2610
    @spaceshippatio2610 Рік тому +2

    AI art... Ohhh boy... I'm no computer sav but if my understanding is correct, AI can only make what it is fed. So ultimately the creativity comes from the original pieces, and it is creativity that makes art what it is. An AI can't create any new ideas out of imagination, only mash old ideas together and is therefor removed from the creativity of the human mind by one step, and is therefore not even art at that point because it has a lack of proper creativity.
    Some people might be tempted to say that artists only reuse old ideas anyway, but that is a lie people tell themselves to make them feel better about a lack of creativity. Creativity comes from interacting with the real world around them. If artists only used old ideas like the AI does then the first person to scrape one rock against another to create a patter would somehow have had to have gotten the idea from another artist who did it before him. (New ideas exist, they are just hard to come by)
    If people become reliant on AI to make art, ideas will indefinitely be reused that have already been done by real people. Over time if people use the AI's product to gain inspiration as some people are saying they should do, then that art will inevitably be fed back into the AI to create more, effectively putting works of art into a rut full of motifs. When it comes to technology and art, technology should enable people to make art (like digital art) but not be the source of our art (AI). Tech should be a paintbrush in the artists hand, not telling the artist how to make art. Let alone making it entirely for the artist.

    I am trying to be positive about AI art... but it's difficult when I know the reality that it will be used for BOTH good and nefarious purposes. Like, I think it could be great for generating ideas, or taking the strain off animators (maybe the AI could make tedious animation frames), and AI in general, like Chat GPT can be useful for small bursts of basic help. *However*, yes, it will displace artists and cause our world to devalue us even MORE. I used to work in the industry. It sucked. Everyone but two people I graduated with are still in it. As terrible as the AI might be for artists, I feel like it's an... okay alternative for someone craving artwork (with zero talent or ability to create art) and absolutely no way of paying the money artists deserve (which leaves people actually willing to pay because they don't like the AI). That and it also satiates their impatience instead of asking artists every hour if they're done yet (I still cannot believe this happens, I gp days or even weeks without checking in! I don't wanna rush the artist!)... 🙃 Still, not ideal but I, amittedly, might've resorted to this if I was unable to pay artists EVER. But like... that has never happened and I don't ever see it happening.
    Mmm, I just realized that I don't actually know a whole lot on this subject, I just assumed people type some words in and boom, art is made in seconds. And I don't even know if these AI are free. Am I assuming too much? Forgive me if I am, I just couldn't help but think this stuff when you mentioned it.

    AI art can't create something fully new and original as much as humans can't create something fully new and original. Yes they're trained on existing art, so are people, they look at millions and millions of pictures, that includes art and photos they do not own and then they use that to learn how to draw. This is true for both humans and art, and saying AI art isn't real because it learns from existing art and is therefore just copying what already exists seems very reductionist.
    Edit: to clarify what i mean, yes the art is based on other art, but there's a huge difference between "it look at 5 drawing and then try to make drawing" and "it looks at a huge database of millions upon millions of drawings and then try to make drawing" in how much originality and creativity there is. Like the classic quote goes "stealing from one artist is plagiarism, stealing from 50 is art"

    • @slimetank394

      @CharacterDesignForge  Рік тому +1

      Because if it’s used commercially that’s both theft of the original work, and opportunity loss for the person they should have hired instead. I have no patience for an argument that’s for AI art specifically mimicking a living working artist.

      @@CharacterDesignForge Oh, if you said it was specifically about AI art mimicking the art of a specific artist in the video then I missed that. Sorry. Yeah that is not something that should be used commercially.

    • @lonk2902
      @lonk2902 Рік тому

      Ok to expand on this, I don't think it's theft to copy an artists style by studying their works. I think it would be theft if you imitate a specific work but not if you copy the style a work is in. This counts for both AI and human artists.
      I do think it is still problematic to use AI to avoid paying an artist who's style you want to have in your work by having the AI copy their style, if it was realistically possible for you to work with that artist. Especially if a large company does it.
