Had a heads up on a flash flood coming down the Rainbow Wash near Old Highway 80 south of Buckeye after storm were kinda sucky. But they had been building/training over the Buckeye area, a flash flood warning went up and as I drove across Rainbow Wash, it was dry and huge, so I decided to check what the warning said and it was for that dang wash! So I messaged my friend Daniel Henz at the Flood Control District and he said sure enough, 3.5-4ft high of water was coming down.
Fun to catch this on a lousy chase day!

Great film, glad u recorded it. My brother in law was living in N Mexico yrs ago and told me of a time he and an old man were cutting firewood in a dried streambed when the old man said it was time to get and pointed to a storm miles away. While drinking beer kicking back he heard a deep rumble getting louder then the flood came. Gave him a new respect for how quickly things can change there

Those flash floods start out at a snail's pace but they get pretty intense quick. I've seen Vekol wash start like that and within 20 minutes the channel is so full it's nearly hitting the bottom of the bridge on I-8. Cool stuff!

Yes indeed, from bone-dry to standing-wave in about 30 seconds. THAT, boys and girls, is why you do NOT camp out in a wash in the desert.

Absolutely brilliant film work, & even better editing (with zero additional crappy music sounds - that others abuse, to spoil their videos)
The sound of the water tumbling over it's debris plug, as well as the sound of your voice trying to vie for space as it happens - as well as the choreographed time-lapse shots at the end - made this video one of (if not the best) & absolutely pleasant in ever aspect - to watch and admire and hear..

Floated Hells Canyon in July one year. About ten of us set up camp at the designated area. Huge thunderclouds about and it started raining hard. Most of the guys set up their tents on a nice wide flat beach, mine was in a higher rocky area where I set up to cook for everyone. I hung a rubber boat between 2 trees and was watching the storm, everyone else in their tents. High up on the canyon wall miles from us I could see a rush of water cascading over the cliffs. 20 minutes later their was a roaring sound and I looked up and realized the nice beach was the mouth of a great wash. I ran and roused the tenter's just in time, the wall of water with logs and brush was 20 feet high and came across with such velocity it crossed the Snake river and swept up the other side 200+ feet. Wish I had that on camera!

I am a retired dispatcher from the City of Las Vegas Dept of Public Safety. A number of years ago, we had a flash flood similar to this hit the NW side of Las Vegas and one of our city fire trucks got caught in it. A police helicopter had to be called to rescue them ... too funny! That just added to the natural rivalry between cops and fire fighters.

That storm produced a very respectable flow in a short time.
Even more impressive when the video was shot from ground level.
Not knowing the terrain, I assume these washes just flow and gradually
lose themselves in the surrounding desert.
