What's your favorite type of hot dog (even if you're not Danish)? Let me know in the comments! 🤤 🌭
Me???all of them ehhehe i love it all🥰
I usually go for a medister with two breds and ketchup chased down with a faxe kondi.._
When the epidemic gets better, welcome to Taiwan to play
I tried a reddish one yesterday and it taste unique. They don’t have these hotdogs in the United States.
Yeah I agree! They definitely have a unique taste to them
As a dane, born and bred, I have to say this was a great history vid, I knew some of it, but definitely not all, and have a "foreigner" teaching me is absolutely awesome.... now I have to go watch your other videos.... Thank you for caring....
as a child i lived in Danmark, i am half Danish, i remember the hotdog being a red long sausage in a open bun with mustard ketchup and dried onions, best thing ever!!!
I often eat at Den Økologiske Pølsevogn when visiting Copenhagen, because I love organic products. I then always order a large sausage on a bun with everything on top. Thanks for the video .I thought the sausage cart concept was much older than 1921
Ohh I'll have to try that place, it sounds awesome!
Hi. Have yo been to Birket I Lolland Denmark, my great grandfather was born there in 1886 left for America in 1907.
I really appreciate the way you carry your voice. Relaxed, easy, soothing. Not ending in high pitch every other second. Also, the depth you take in your stories is great. I did know that all Pølsevogne is run by handicapped people, but not the story behind 11 years of applying for the right to sell and other nice details. Keep it up!
Mange tak Lars 😊 Your encouragement means a lot!
@@ErininCopenhagen You are welcome. I am an artist too and know that feedback is important. Good and bad. Not just the likes. That lacks "conviction". You seem to like being in Denmark and then we Danes are very welcoming. Did you know that Canada and Denmark have an ongoing "war" for over 30 years over a small piece of Rock? Every year we go there, replace the Canadian Flag with the Danish and leave a bootle of Snaps. Then the Canadians come shortly after and replace the flags and leave Whiskey I believe.
@@larselbk9481 Yes! 😂 Hans Island, right? And let's be honest... It's really Canadian land 😉 Haha.
What kind of artist are you?
@@ErininCopenhagen Yes. and big NO :). I do abstract art - mostly liquid acrylics but in my own style compared to the masses.
In the winter, the chocolate milk is served warm and hot chocolate is very good when it's cold. I think that's how the tradition with a chocolate milk started.
Ristet med det hele! Every time :D You get to hit all 5 tastes, it just can't be beat. If I'm in a rush, I will go for a fransk with hotdogs sauce, though.
Ah man, clearly that's the one to order! I can't wait to try it 🤤
Great informative video once again👏
I can add that there is one in Sisimiut - Greenland as well. It is at least five years since it was active.
Hi Erin! Well done on the amazing content. I just found your channel and I am binge-watching your videos. I am going to Copenhagen this Friday and finding good/not only basic information has been harder than I expected. Thank you!
Ahh so happy I could be of help! To be honest, I started this channel exactly because of that - I also found it really hard to find this kind of stuff out! Enjoy Copenhagen ✨
My father came to the U.S.A. from Danmark in 1952. As a young boy we often would travel to Copenhagen, Odense and Esbjerg (my father's home town) to visit family. Back then (70's) there was one hot dog and that was the polse with romelaide, fried onions and ketchup (other ingredients possible but it was heaven). My Dad is now 91 and my uncle 95. Was it the polse?
Oh wow he moved over quite late! Where did he end up settling?
That hot dog you describe sounds like a "ristet med det hele" like the other commenters mentioned (English: grilled with everything). Maybe you can Google and see if this was what you had!
The classic Danish hot dog is either the roasted version or the boiled red pølse (sausage) in a bun with remoulade, ketchup, mustard (if you like, but optional), fried onions and chopped raw onions and sweet pickled cucumber slices.
Nothing better than a Danish hotdog. 😊
So, if no one knows.
Red colour used to be added to the sausages that were a day old, to easily distinguish between fresh and not quite fresh, both for buyer and seller, I guess.
Whoa, cool fact! I hadn't heard that before, thanks for sharing 😁
And the red color comes from the blood of an insect
Love your videos! Subscribed
Thanks so much, Peter! Great to have you along 😊
hot dogs, history and an exlanation of hot dog types in copenhagen. What in gods name is there not to love?
Why have I only discovered your channel ? It's brilliant and like having you back here again ! Hope you are all well. Rob (Anderman)
Aww Rob!! ❤️ I'm doing great, hope you and your family are well, too. If you guys ever make it over to Copenhagen, you've got your very own personal tour guide 😁
@@ErininCopenhagen Oh I'd love it ! If we can ever get to venture beyond our own postcode......
Very nice info about Hot Dogs 🌭👍🏻🤗
Thanks so much!
Nice video! I have tried a vegetarian one)
Wow 🥰 filipinos love hotdags... specially kids here🥰
No no no, I must protest! :D
You MUST try the traditional "Ristet Hot Dog" with everything if you want to experience the full Danish Hot Dog stand adventure. You may leave out the pickles if you like.
Oh no, I see now I have made a serious error with my order in this video!! 😂 I shall go out promptly and order a ristet hot dog med det hele. As a Canadian, pickles will NEVER be left out!! I eat those things whole, especially now in the summer (just one of the many things my husband thinks is weird about me...) Though it's annoyingly hard to find a proper dill pickle in Europe 😭
@@ErininCopenhagen Yes, you did indeed make what I consider a category error. While the Fransk Hot Dog is a popular choice it was first introduced in the 1980s and must still be considered a new option. If anything you should try both but first and foremost the "Ristet Hot Dog med det hele" aka THE classic. I'm quite disappointed your husband did not educate you on this topic! :D Looking forward to you correcting your erroneous act! And correct, good Dild pickles can be hard to find but not impossible. Many old folks are experts in making Dild pickles themselves.
You should check out the history of why the danish sausages are red. That’s interesting too
Great to hear the history behind the Danish polser. I’ve heard the history of why they are traditionally red, but what makes the redness these days? Simply dye??
Yes a hotdog in Denmark is one with a red boiled sausage combined with the ingredients others have mentioned. A rosted (risted) but the sausage is brown and well you guessed it: roasted. They both taste wonderfull. But if you dont have a mouth as big as a bowling ball it will be a mess. That is one of the reasons I prefer the french hapsdog. But you can allmost get the same flavour by bying a "bøfsandwich".
"Mouth as big as a bowling ball" hahaha, this got a laugh out of me 😂 I know what you mean and that's a big reason why I choose the fransk hot dog - especially if you are walking around the city, it's just so easy to eat!
Note that in Denmark a hotdog consists of a sausage, a bun and some condiments. A sausage alone is not a hotdog.
I'll have a ristet hot-dog without mustard, thank you very much.
A solid choice. Though I am a die hard mustard fan - I always get both ketchup and mustard in mine 😊
I often choose ONLY mustard. Ketchup and remoulade can be sacrifised. But I got’sta have my mustard. 😍😂
if i could move to Denmark, number one reason why i would move, would be the Danish Hot Dog...
Nice informative video. My favorite has to be the classic danish hotdog with red sausage.
I don't know how it is where you're from but one thing I find unique in Copenhagen is how large cemeteries also function as public parks, in particular the Assistens Cemetery, where the locals go to sit and enjoy the sun. As someone who moved here from Jutland I wasn't used to hang out at cemeteries but I totally get why it's smart for those big cemeteries to be used as public parks/green spaces as well.
Oh yes, I'd noticed that and interesting that it's a uniquely Copenhagen thing! I never thought about that but you're right - I guess living in a city, you've got to enjoy the green spaces where you can 😊
@@ErininCopenhagen I lived in Århus for a while, and they have a cemetary used in the same way, so I'm not sure if it's a uniquely Danish thing.
I work at the Central Station for DSB. There is a Pølsevogn there, but i think he is getting it wrong. He has not normal Hotdog bread, but Wholegrain bread i think its called in english. His sausages is good, but not the bread. I think its a misunderstanding that he serves this bread. I always think when i watch tourists there at that place they are not getting a hotdog the way it should be. Of course you should eat healthy most of the time, but not a hotdog. There is a really good pølsevogn near Åmarken station 4 stops from the Central Station. They serve it the old fashion danish way, but of course its just my opinion :) And by the way! Gammel Køge Landevej near Åmarken is not worth making a video of, but near there is Valby Parken and Valby Parken is very nice if you would be in that area.
Ohh perfect, thanks for these tips! I've never even been to Åmarken so I'll definitely have to explore there. Edit: Actually, I was at Valby Parken on Monday! So maybe I was closeby. I took my son to the little water park they have there - it was a big hit :)
I actually have a question for you as someone who works at the Central Station: where can I find that little face in the wall?? You know the one that was cemented into the brick and there's a bit of a mystery about who it is/who did it (at least from what I remember)? I've looked a couple times when I was there but have never found it 😄I've only heard about it but don't know exactly where it's located. (Now I sound crazy - I hope you know the one I mean! Haha).
@@ErininCopenhagen hehe i will try to ask around. I know there are several strange writings and things written on the Central station. Ive heard that from older collegues, but i will try to find out :)
@@ErininCopenhagen Hi Erin. A colleague knew where it was. I hope it is this you mean. Its located at the main entrance to the Central Station by Vesterbrogade. Just when you get in at the door near to the Starbucks Cafe. It is a self portrait of the man who build the Central station i was told. It is very small and difficult to find. I have a photo of it, but i dont think i can upload it here. Its at the wall facing out of the buiding just at the entrance about 2 meters up. ibb.co/9shmp6Z
@@nikolasbeckerandersen1383 Omg you're a star!! Thank you so much for asking and for even taking a photo!! It looks quite high up so no wonder I couldn't find it 😂 (I'm only 160) I will come by soon and try to find it myself. Thank you again!! Edit: Just saw you said it was ca. 2 meters up. That explains it 🤭
@@ErininCopenhagen Yes first i talked with some of my collegues and they didnt know Then one of them knew and told me where, but i still couldent fint it. So i HAD to find it that day haha. I couldent work properly untill i found it, so finally i did and it was still hard to find it when i was 1 meter away. My collegues were glad i found it, because then i could concentrate on other things than that picture :)
3 røde med brød og en kold Cocio, tak ;)
Love the local history. Great work!

Thank you so much, Nikolaj!
ohh dear Erin .. i know alot of ppl love the " French stuff" but that is not a hotdog ... :-) I have alittle story from when i was around 8-9 years old wayyy back in the last millennium : sometimes my friends and i ran to the " pølsevogn" and bought a " Kradser" or 2 it was the hotdog bread with the strong kind of mustard on it ( hence the name) and it would cost something like 0.50 kr the one who cried , should pay the next time ......... im not sure if you can do kind of thing anymore
wonderful girlie with a bright charming intelligence. E R I N You are a smilingly gift to humanity, - bringing back the future to the rest of us. I´m sitting in Berlin "dreaming a dream" of poelser-poelser-poelser.... Longing myself back to tasty-juicy DK - decent food for a grown-up Dane, - seven decades of age...still going strong.... Missing my daily red-red-red-red HotDogs - all over the place...
Plain red cooked sausage in a hotdog with “everything” on top. Ketchup, mustard, remoulade, raw and fried onions and pickled cucumber. Best way to get a proper hotdog ❤️
Medister is not Lamb, it's pork.
A French hotdog is NOT a traditional danish hotdog. 😉
Nooo I cheated 🙈 What would you recommend instead?
Traditional is the red. That is traditionally a boiled red sausage. In a hotdog bun with mustard, ketchup, remoulade, fried and raw onion and pickles.
Personally I prefer the fried hotdog. The”brown” sausage. Same equipment as the red.
I actually normally order 2 frankfurters and a bun. I’m not the big hotdog eater. But when I eat hotdogs … it’s usually the fried sausage.
“En stegt med det hele”. 😂
(A fried with everything.)
… and one more thing … if you don’t have onions all around you when you’re done … you’re doing it wrong. 😂
@@muhest I'll ask for that next time in your honour 😁
Did you try "en kradser"?
That is just the bun with mustard and ketchup ........
No! I've never heard of or even seen that one! Is it good?
@@ErininCopenhagen It's not on the menu.
In my youth (the 60's and 70's) you asked for "en kradser" when you didn't have much money.
like I said - it's just the bun with mustard and ketchup.
France hotdogs is new in Denmark didnt exits When I was Young. Pitty you didnt show a real full danish hotdog
Shame you didn't include a bit about pølsevogns-slang, there's truly a staggering amount of it.
Though as pølsevogne have grown more and more rare the slang probably isn't that well known by the younger generations. That and a fair bit of it is not too politically correct, so that's probably also why we don't hear it as much. Ordering a 'dead indian with blanket and the full war paint' will probably get you some looks from tourists!
Oh no, that one's awful! I don't know most of the slang tbh as a foreigner, so feel free to teach me any more you can think of 😊 Maybe I can do an updated video at a later point to include them all
