Nothing better than a plumber explaining the best fittings for aerodynamic flow and economical savings. Thanks for taking the time. This will save me $$$ on unnecessary fittings and irreversible designs.
Finally!! Someone who knows how to make dust collection equipment and piping work with PVC plumbing pipe! THANK YOU!!! 👍👍 I bought a bunch of fittings from Woodcraft, but they don't all work together. Like you said, you need special connectors etc. to make them work, but then where do you get the correct pipe? You answered all my questions in this video! I'm going to Ace tomorrow to pick up some sewer drain pipe and fittings. Hopefully it all assembles as easily as you make it look. thanks again!
I’m setting up a small new shop. Getting ready to install a dust collection system. Of all the videos I have watched, yours is by far the best. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Have a great day.
I have watched more dust collection videos than I care to admit to. Your video has got to be the very best at explaining the fittings and the types of pipe and fittings needed. In addition your accent reminds me of my childhood living in long island!
Thank you for specifically calling out what sort of PVC pipe to use. I had heard people talk about the different types of PVC on UA-cam but they didn't go into detail. Appreciate it!
This is by far the BEST dust collection video I have seen. I am finally getting around to plumbing my dust collector as opposed to moving the hose from tool-to-tool. I wish I could go overhead but am restricted by heating ducts and an I-beam. I'll have to go near the floor.
Thank you so much for the great video! I'm building my first dust collection system now and this was exactly the information I needed to understand the SDR fittings plus blast gates.
DUDE. you are a life saver. This answers any/all questions I had about this. Other videos just show the build but doesn't answer questions/concerns. Thank you so much.
Mike great video of the dust collection pipe and your extensive knowledge I am like other people i'm sure a DIYer turned woodworker and want to make my dust collection right from the start and you have given great ideas for my shop so thank you some much sir.
Hi Mke, I came across your video and wanted to thank you for sharing. Your explanation is one of the best I've seen so far on the subject. Thanks again.
Thank you!! I've watched other videos on this topic and was left confused and overwhelmed. You've explained this beautifully. I can't wait to get mine up and running! Again, thank you Mike!!
What can I say that's not already said 😆. I appreciate you taking the time to explain in such detail the best methods of joining dust collection pieces together.
That was very informative; I appreciate you sharing your experience of what works and doesn't. It saves me from purchasing components that may not work as well as I want. I have a 1.5 hp Onedia cyclone I've used for 20+ years along with four and five inch hoses to connect to my machines. I'd prefer a more permanent installation. This may get me started on that.
Very good. I like the fact that your videos have no outtakes. Just let the camera roll and say it all. Good advice on dust collection methods. Someday I'll get around to getting a dust collection vacuum and I'll use your suggestions to build my system. Thanks.
this video is AMAZING thank you dont EVER take this video down lol working on my shop Dust collection system..this helped A LOT cant wait to actually start
Great video Mike. I, like you, was a plumber for ten years. I left plumbing and now own a plumbing supply company. Two years ago I put in a dust collection system using 3” sch 40 foam core. I ran it from my shop vac with a 30 gallon barrel to make it 2 stage. Worked good but all the adapter fittings and clamps cost a small fortune. Last week I got a new Grizzly dust collector with a 6” inlet so I tore out all the old system and ran 4 & 6” SDR35 pipe and fittings. I’m not a fan of the plastic gates so I made my own from plywood. I also did not glue it, but rather used 3” foil cold weather duct tape. That worked really well. I also used galvanized clips, although they are bigger that the SDR pipe. I wrapped them with rubber pipe insulation which made them snug and also doubles as an anti vibration if need be. It’s up and running and works great. I’m doing the grounding system this weekend. I only wish I had found your video sooner but that’s the way it goes.
Great video. This is the best I have found for demystifying the challenges of dust collection pipe fitting. You deserve a medal. I greatly appreciate the time you spent doing this. Thanks.
D2729 thin wall PVC pipe. I don't glue any joints. I put a short piece of mylar powder coating masking tape on joints to secure them. Mylar/silicone tape doesn't leave adhesive residue later. Then stretch -wrap joint to make air tight. Makes modifications easy later.
Wow. You manage to say a lot more here than most vids on the subject - and it's easy to take in. Thank you for taking the time here. I think you'll save me several times the amount of time when I get round to doing mine very soon.
Mike, great video. Very informative from topic to topic. I will use this as my goto for building my DC system. My shop is a bit broken up so it will be a little complicated.. Thank you for caring and sharing.
Very nicely done and very detailed too. This is just what i needed to know, for setting up ducting for my new Laguna 3hp C-Flux dust collector system. I looked at other ducting products for vacuum system and the prices were astronomical for ducting compared to using sewer piping. Thank you!
Mike once again a great video tutorial, very helpful and easy to understand. I look forward to viewing the grounding video and then applying this this system to my shop. Thank you!
Good video. I'm just finishing up my system and I've watched a lot of videos trying to glean all the tips I can. The one thing I've only heard here is putting the PVC fittings together with just a little grease. Great idea. It does a few things. 1) It lets the fittings slide together easier and fully seat. 2) It makes them easier to take apart if you need to change or add to the system. 3) I think it actually helps seal the system. I used a little bearing grease on each connection and two gutter screws to hold them together. I would say none of my joints leak at all. Putting the grease on the male part pushes any extra grease out but then since it's a vacuum system any small voids in the joint will draw in a little grease and seal it. Well that's my theory anyway.
The grease will help seal a bit too! Works great Also remember, this system may be in use for 25 years or more, so try to give a damn about the quality of your installation. There's no need to waste money on pipe or fittings that are not necessary to your shop, but also don't cut corners! Make this the best build you can!
Mike, this was very helpful and informative. I ‘m setting up my new-shop and this makes so much more sense than the metal. Looking forward to hearing about the grounding system Great quality on the video and audio
Great video and perfect timing for me. I need to replace my main line hose because it sags, like you mentioned, but it also has developed small holes too. It leaks like a sieve.
First time watcher. Great video!! Timing is perfect for me as my first DC is coming in 2weeks and I am designing the duct layout for my new shop! Looking forward to the static/grounding video!
Troy Queen if I ever built a shop from the ground up that’s what I would do except the radiant not much need for it in Florida but did tones of it in NY. Thanks
Nice job! Think you're saving us lots of cash and time. I don't have any ground on my plastic and have never got shocked. I believe it would be highly unlikely that this would cause a fire in real-time. I try and use the least amount of flex pipe as possible. Connecting my chops saw and Table saw closest to the collector first then the machines that run slowest last. I also use sewer pipe although if at all possible 5-6inch pipe would be best, but as I have a 1.5Hp motor that's not possible... I put up with the cold winters blowing the air out a vent in the wall rather than the expense of filters. Lastly, if you do this you need to have an inlet from the outside so as not to create negative pressure in the shop if it is a tight build.
Thanks for the info. Now it needs to be updated for only schedule 40 piping since the schedule 20 green pipe is not available in many places anymore due to code changes, including mine!
I have SDR pipe in my shop in both 6" and 4". Been using it for 15 years. I found you have to be a little creative with the fittings. Lowe's and Home Depot had a limited selection. Lowe's did have an adapter ring that slipped into the schedule 40 pipe to allow for them to be used with the thin wall stuff, but those fittings are way more expensive. It was useful to saw a bunch of slots into the end of the pipe like fingers and then use a gear clamp to clamp it down onto a slightly undersized connection. And you can use a heat gun very carefully to stretch and modify the pipe. Lots of possibilities.
Just an FYI the green sewer pipe from lowes is what you want. At least in my area home depot carries a white sewer pipe that The ID is a little bigger. 4.056 inches inner diameter. vs 3.975 inches
Hi: Nice demo., I have a problem with the plastic Blast gates and I hope you don't. The problem is when used in the up right position. They get saw dust where the slide goes in the bottom and after a while gate does not close completely. This reduced the suction on the system. What I did was go to solve the problem is use the metal Blast Gates which is open at the bottom. Now the Blast Gate closes all the time. Some of my Blast Gates are not in a open and are opened and close remotely. Yes, You have to have more parts and cost more, but I now get better dust removal.
Cabinet Maker great comment, I use to use metal but I take mine apart and clean them. I now only have 4 I use to have 11 so it’s not a big deal to clean. Thanks for the comment
Thank you so much! I am about to do this here in South Africa in my home shop. Learnt a lot and will apply. We work in mm not " and we can't buy blast gates locally, so I will make my own. God bless.
Thanks Mike for the great video. I always wondered what the best solution to piping your dust collection system. I really like that schedule 20. Take care my friend. Al from Maryland
Really looking forward to the grounding video!! Can you show lots of ways to connect the wire to sources for grounding?? i.e. actual ground, outlet or tool grounding. That would be super helpful as I am new to grounding
Matt Arenz it will be up this Saturday. One tip that I am going to stress in the video no tool grounding, the tool is already grounded some double grounded. Thanks for the comment
Beautiful shop, great info! Will really help me plan out my system. Was lucky enough to stumble upon the sewer pipe by accident but I was curious if my powertec 4” fittings would work without serious modification.

David DePuy very glad I was helpful
I agree, every question I had about dust collection was pretty much answered in this video.
Still in the research phase of designing my DC system. This is by far one of the best videos on the subject. Thanks!
A spot on video for both newbies and experienced shop hands. Your explanation, language and knowledge make each video a great experience.
Best video on the tube rn for pvc dust collection system and what fittings and pipe to use, thanks 🙏

Brian Gossett thank you very much
Nice job Mike. Lots of great tips for my dust collection project this labor day weekend. Thanx!!
Great info. I used the same green pipe. Easy to work with. Glad I found this video before I bought my dust gates. Very good info.and ideas.
