Russia doesn't view Ukraine as brothers, they view them as "mini-Russians in need of correction". It's Russia's own fault that Ukraine gravitated to the West. Invading a country, annexing their territory and leaving their city's looking like 1945 Berlin doesn't make them like you more. Stop trying to make Russia's invasion of a sovereign nation 1/20 their size look like a war of self-defense, it is not. It's a war of influence. Even if Russia does win and installs a puppet government in Ukraine, they still lose. The world sees them as a joke, whose military could only take down a nation with not even half their manpower by the skin of their teeth, whose leaders and generals are incompetent and corrupt, a nation that uses private armies that are known to massacre civilians or seemingly no other reason than because they felt like it, no one wants to buy their products and especially their weapons, the west will no longer do business with them, all of this will still happen even if they win. No matter what Russia will lose on the world stage even if they win the war, which as time goes on, seems less and less likely to happen
