It’s funny how people jump to a cheap bike when offered or even came their way , but then , see the large scale of the under lying issues that some problems have and can cause . Making it impossible to squeeze in prophet if it’s to buy and sell successfully , it takes a legend to pull things like this off 😊 . I’ve really enjoyed watching this. Thank you.

@@vegasromaniac thanks so much brother. I’m looking to buy and sell , mainly motocross bikes and pit bikes. Then I’ll hopefully be able to expand my financial situation and my knowledge to start fixing and dealing with quads and then buggies. We should share footage but I’m still in perpetration for my first steps. I’m planned my route and just going for it but your video has definitely inspired me and given me some real drive to want to be able to achieve the same or similar restorations to these fantastic bikes & vehicles . I have the same model. 1999 dr200. I bought it with 5k miles for $2000. Runs like a champ. All I did was change the handlebars and add a skid plate. If you want to change the bars and put new grips on, let me know, I'll send you a new throttle grip so you can put your own grips on it.
I already ordered the ODI grips, the only ones i like , the throttle tube seems to be fine but if it is not, i will let you know .. thank you
The DR650 I did on my channel was in similar state. The tank was rusted through, 1500 miles barn find. You can use acid in the tank to clean up the rust, muratic acid works fast, rinse well, protect yourself. If it leaks get a can of redcoat to seal it up, follow directions to a T. Oxalic acid works well and is safe on your hands just takes longer and is not as aggressive I think it's called rust aid at home Depot.
All good advice but I put some bolts in it , shake it .. got most of the rust out, good petcock and we r rolling.

I had a rusty tank once(77 Kz650), I used stainless steel pins and WD-40 and moved it around a lot, had some success. Next round I used baking soda and vinegar with the SS Pins, and it came out great, I didn't have to go the heavy acid route or a coating.
I had an old bone yard close by for some parts, sourcing parts, tough, sometimes ebay might help.

yeah I've done something similar to my tank, i think its good enough for the new petcock to stop whatever is left over inside

"Pine Sol" cleaner at the dollar store is the best Parts cleaner i have ever used. Cleans a carburator like new, just submerge over night.
better than carb cleaner !? i need to try that !

You never cease to amaze me! There's just no way in hell I would ever want to waste my time on something like this, but I understand you love challenges like this and it's going to be interesting to see how much time and money you have to spend before it becomes worthwhile. You said you wanted a dual sport, now you have a tri-sport. Part of this sport will be being a good tinkerer and rebuilder. I suppose having riding time is a lower priority. It seems this was a great test case to find out the durability of numerous non-metallic parts. Even some of the metallic Parts have issues because of corrosion. Clearly any rubber or plastic stuff is at risk from aging. My biggest concern is whether you'll have continual nagging problems from aged materials that will keep showing their ugly head and cause reliability issues. Nevertheless it's nice you're doing this so I don't have to ever experiment. Will you keep a spreadsheet list of how much time and material you have to put into this?
i had a klr 1997 that i should have never sold a while back , i always missed that bike, now this one takes me back on memory lane ...
@@vegasromaniac at least you should be able to pick this bike up in your old age of 45, whereas those 650s how much heavier.

I think “Reviving” or “Revitalising” or maybe “Reconditioning” would be a more appropriate term than Restoring. In any case...it’s good to see people breathing new life into the beaten down and saving them from the scrap yards...

I have a WR250F that i do trail raiding and sand tracks with but the most fun i have on 2 wheels is with out a dough on cheap bikes . I'm 42 and doing gravity checks on my tender age is not the nice anymore but still enjoy able . It feels like the risk is just so much less....lol ( probably not ) . Me and 3 buddies entered a motoCP competition with a 1979 Yamaha 100 ( Cheap endurance race running for 4 hours and 4 races per year bike must cost less then $400) We also do a cheaprun where you must buy a bike for under $500 and do 500km and carry all your camping gear on your bike i have a Chinese beauty i got for free a TSR250 its totally crap but a love it and it runs. That thing is fucken mint bike and a racing specimen . In south Africa you don't get bikes like that for that price . Nice to see something that is not about electric paddle bikes.
That's awesome man, yeah I like a cheap bike for some reason , about 10 years ago I had a klr 250 I bought for 300 fiexed it and sold it for 1800, I missed that bike ever since so this is a revenge for all the missed time

I have used electrolysis to remove rust from a tank. Find it on youtube Those vacuum petcocks are terrible, can use the raptor-style with a fuel filter.

I didn't buy it to race it, I got it to explore and this one is slow and safe enough to be a good solo explorer
@@vegasromaniac Yeah it will be a great explorer. I'm only joking. Gabe from torture test magazine, and his shenanigans on the DR200 will forever be legendary though.
Check out torture test magazine (a youtube channel). He has a full breakdown of the most important mods to improve the dr200. Many of the changes are inexpensive alterations to fix impediments to performance in the dr200. He ran the bike in the glen helen 24h
