That's plain wrong.. By the same line of thinking you could also say if everyone is fat, no-one is or if everyone is stupid, no-one is. But there are obviously intellectual standards that people can meet or not.. And if everyone meets them, it is a good thing.
I live in HK and don't want my kids to have the pressure so put them in international school. Unfortunately my mother in law was a local school teacher and she put so much expectation on my kids that my son mentioned once that he wants to kill himself. We're moving to Australia, away from the pressure and the bad grandmother.
I don't know if you are from Australia but I am sure that Australia has a huge proportion of Asians and they will not feel like an outsider even If they choose to socialize only with non-Asian people (which is impossible since Asian people in Australia are everywhere)

What I mean is China has the highest suicide rate because of the pressure the homework causes them. Many Asian parents expect their child to have the best grades ever and even when their children get a score that’s even higher then they expected . They then say they could have gotten even better grades .Then the kids become severely depressed because they can’t spend any time to de stress and calm down that’s why I said her father expects her best not the best and helps her with the work and doesn’t just force her to do the work.

At least these students understand why they have to be disciplined in life. American students are not disciplined enough. I'm a big believer in the discovery of a child's natural abilities. Some of this can actually be discovered by the time a child is around 5 especially if the very young child is exposed to a great variety of learning opportunities. Toys, stories, play. They will not all be good at math, science, others will be better at history, writing, the arts... caring for others. Or perhaps they have a sense of justice, fairness..etc In short the education systems need to discover where the child's natural abilities lay and not painfully force them into other fields. Help each child to succeed instead of fail... and be ready for surprises. Sometimes great things come with maturity and support. At that time they may expand their interests and abilities.

A person can have the best education, the best grades, the best extra curricular activities after school, the best of training, check, the best of all. but the first thing a person needs to be and have is financial literacy, financial smarts, with their spending, with their life decisions. it will break you if you make a significant mistake, no matter how high you are in this "I'm better than others" system. I've seen lots of people who already had it made, but made some life decisions that put them back down to the other end.
I fully disagree with the full pressure Rule, a child should have the choice to feel Childhood, I love the motivation part and help them choose by themselves and support them.
Here in France some pupil have almost no purpose and keep asking "why should I learn this or that". They're not wrong somehow, even as a teacher I sometimes wonder why they have so much to learn while I myself barely remember anything I learnt in middle school.
You think these kids have some sort of “drive”, when in fact they were forced by their parents to excel in multiple activities at an extremely young age. (The young girl at around 7:00 is an exception, her father is a mega star/millionaire due to his tutoring there in China, so she has a major advantage over everyone in the world) They were born into that society of being disciplined and hard-working. Here in the West, you don’t need to work that hard to do great things in life, like having a great job. tl;dr: don’t compare different kids from different countries
i think the most powerful thing to learn is working with others and have others work with you and sharing and caring and thinking and planning together.
I don't have kids but it's quite amazing the difference in mindset between the eastern and western kids. The east has the drive and attitude that the west had when they were the industrial powers.
Most parents don't want their kids to attend local schools in Hong Kong, but they simply can't afford international schools which bypass the examinations. And so they (I'd like to add that not every family can even afford tutoring) must use what extra money they have to invest in tutoring and what not which still costs less than international school tuition. It's not always a matter of choice, but of money and circumstances.
If they are the extreme in intense discipline, I think we might be on the opposite end of the continuum. Honestly, America needs more discipline in education. There were quite a few graduates from my high school who shouldn't have graduated for reasons such as not being able to even communicate in English well. An extreme style of upbringing may or may not be good, but steps towards a more disciplined and strict education system would not only be ideal but crucial to this country's future!
Teachers are less responsible on student's failure than students themselves but are still responsible, unfortunately no one is considering that!!! You can't learn from one math teacher but you can learn from another one...
I understand that excellence is not easy. My 23 year old graduated this month, she's an RN. Very proud of her, because as a teacher myself, I know it wasnt easy for her. I have two more, going to 7th and 5 grade, so the first thing I thought when she graduated was "one down, two more to go". As a decendent of once slaves, constantly battling racial injustice. My goal is not for my children to "climb the social ladder". My siblings and cousins are the first generation to get a degree. So our children will be the second. So there is a lot of pressure building a foundation for our bloodline for generations to come. My children make it very hard, because they live around people who are laid back and content, who does not understand why my children cannot go outside to play all day. They are both honor student's, so I try to balance it for them, help them ballance their studies througout the school year. Spending time with them, letting them know how important it is for their future. And that I am very proud of them. So I respect the way Asia focuses on academic, because life is going to get more demending, and I don't want them stuck on the sideline. Take care everyone, ballance your work, studies and spend time together as a family.
well these are mainly stereotypes... I live in Singapore, and most of the parents i know don't put that kind of pressure on their kids. Well definitely there are quite a number of my peers that are 'less fortunate' in that sense.. But they all did very well now as an adult. XD

Not all asian parents are like that. I'm a Chinese living in Singapore and my parents give me quite a lot of freedom. Only a few of my friend's parents are actually that bad

stress is all in the mind. just accept failure in your studies and move on. Don't blame the elite education system, whether in USA, India, China, Japan, Korea and Singapore. If one cannot compete in the academic arena, just move on. If the parents feel sad, then they are adults and have to accept it sooner or later. so what the media portray the harshness of the education system is purely subjective. many of us, poor or well off students have benefited greatly in this meritocracy system.

Seeing the rampant substance abuse and neuroticism in the West, I am not sure what is worse.. I guess, as is true most of the time, a middle ground would be the way to go. But we definitely need more strictness in the West, while there probably is a need for more leniency in the East.

l live in Asia, and not in the top countries in terms of education. I had just started middle school and l normally sleep for 4 hours a day. I am still just an average student, not the top tier smart ones.

Why did they make a documentary about this? I'm a senior year student in Canada: I'm a DECA international competitor and practice on tuesdays, I have Engineering Club on Wednesdays, Math club on Thursdays, am the president of Sports Analytics Club (on Fridays) and I used to be on the schools senior science olympic team and was on the science club executive team. I've applied to the best business schools in the globe and I live in CANADA. This is just life, it has nothing to do with whether you live in Korea, Hong Kong, Canada, Sweden, where ever. Its a lifestyle that is respectable if you choose it for your own benefit as I have while most people in these documentaries seem to be forced into these lifestyles. I still play video games, play soccer everyday in summers, take naps everyday after school, etc. Its balanceable... WHY IS THERE A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THIS.

Sorry but I've seen too much in my experience. 45 years married, I'm caucasian American, my wife Chinese. In college back in the 1970s we met. All Asian students in college I knew studied for lucrative professions, medical, science, business, etc. I never knew any studying history, literature, etc. (I'm sure there are exceptions.) My point is hard to explain and not enough space to write with. But I'll try by saying too many Asians seem to go after success for success' sake. I' ve witnessed an imbalance in other interests. Over-specialisation. Religion is low for many Asian males. And problems manifest as they get into ages 50, 60. Divorce being one. (Although the combination male Caucasian-female Asian I've never known one divorce.) I've known very few I can have a conversation with about subjects outside their professions. Again, imbalance. I write out of concern.
Ignorant??? What do you want? My Chinese wife and I have been married 46 years and I've experienced plenty with Asians. Nearly all I've known do not have balanced interests. My wife got only half way through college by marrying me. Her female relations got college degrees. All - all of them - are now divorced and hurti g for money in their 60s. My wife felt guilty about not getting the all mighty degree. Just a wife and mother to our kids. I never tire of asking her, Ok, who won? She did! She's got far more money in her retirement than they will ever have. We help them with money.

I'm a senior year student in Canada: I'm a DECA international competitor and practice on tuesdays, I have Engineering Club on Wednesdays, Math club on Thursdays, am the president of Sports Analytics Club (on Fridays) and I used to be on the schools senior science olympic team and was on the science club executive team. I've applied to the best business schools in the globe and I live in CANADA. This is just life, it has nothing to do with whether you live in Korea, Hong Kong, Canada, Sweden, where ever. Its a lifestyle that is respectable if you choose it for your own benefit as I have while most people in these documentaries seem to be forced into these lifestyles. I still play video games, play soccer everyday in summers, take naps everyday after school, etc. Its balanceable... WHY IS THERE A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THIS.

Sorry but I've seen too much in my experience. 45 years married, I'm caucasian American, my wife Chinese. In college back in the 1970s we met. All Asian students in college I knew studied for lucrative professions, medical, science, business, etc. I never knew any studying history, literature, etc. (I'm sure there are exceptions.) My point is hard to explain and not enough space to write with. But I'll try by saying too many Asians seem to go after success for success' sake. I' ve witnessed an imbalance in other interests. Over-specialisation. Religion is low for many Asian males. And problems manifest as they get into ages 50, 60. Divorce being one. (Although the combination male Caucasian-female Asian I've never known one divorce.) I've known very few I can have a conversation with about subjects outside their professions. Again, imbalance. I write out of concern.

Ignorant??? What do you want? My Chinese wife and I have been married 46 years and I've experienced plenty with Asians. Nearly all I've known do not have balanced interests. My wife got only half way through college by marrying me. Her female relations got college degrees. All - all of them - are now divorced and hurti g for money in their 60s. My wife felt guilty about not getting the all mighty degree. Just a wife and mother to our kids. I never tire of asking her, Ok, who won? She did! She's got far more money in her retirement than they will ever have. We help them with money.

I cant say abt other provinces but most of us from ON, don't have a proficiency on French. Plus, they use European French for instructions instead of Quebecois/Acadien, when we hit QC and NB, we are lk "WTF! That's like nothing we learned in school"! Complete useless and impractical! Tarbarneck!

yea, Asian parents are quite strict on their children's relationship. Maybe early 20s before they can have relationship. Also, don't use that nerd cant get laid mentality to think about Asian. Having top grade is hotter to girls than being in a soccer team.
