Well, what a coincidence! I tore a foam hingeline yesterday, and was going to repair it this afternoon. I've never seen the Z-hinge method before, I'll give it a try. Great videos, well worth my Patreon.
You missed the CA hinges, they also work great. Hoping to see more of the AR wing, building one myself atm and looking for some inspiration on component placement :)
I literally just crashed my Primo, and discovered the right aileron was ripped yesterday. I just used blenderm tape, it's really good stuff. Are there any glues or adhesives other than hot glue that would make a good hinge repair?
There are lots of ways to repair a hinge and these are the ones I use. Foam safe CA, the glue from Hobbyking shown here and 5 min epoxy are all I use..
I much prefer to repair using the hinges, even now with a brand new model I'll cut the foam hinge and refit using hinges. One tip I did find VERY useful with them though is after you have the pockets cut in the foam take the hinge and fold it flat. Then dunk just the pin section is some vaseline, unfold and refold the other way and dunk again, then apply the glue and insert the hinge into the wing as you would normally. The vaseline stop any glue getting into the pin and seizing it up.
For every foamy model I buy that I think is worth it for longevity, the first thing I do is use clear packing tape as a reinforcing hinge by moving the control surfaces to their extremes then laying down a full length (or close to it) strip of clear packing tape. Smooth it down with a plastic ruler edge, then flip the model, and repeat the other side. No need to worry that the foam hinge will degrade over time, because you have a reinforcing tape over it from the get go.
UHU Pro can give a give a good hidden repair on colored models -especially if the hinge is jagged. Just spread glue on the torn join and wait a few minutes till the glue goes stringy. You do need to leave it to set but it’s very flexible. Add a strip of tape in the ‘V’ for extra strength if required.
cut hinges out of milk bottle plastic crease the hinge joint . punch a hole in either side so the glue can form a plug ,install then like a dubro style hinge ..use a small amount of epoxy to glue them in .. last forever.
I’ve found the best way is to get an old floppy disc, break it apart and cut a hinge from the disc itself, make a few holes in either side, next make two slots in the wing and control surface with a scalpel or sharp knife and gorilla glue them in, the glue expands through the holes made from the disc and hey presto, a hinge that will never break, the disc inside the floppy disc case is super strong, only thing to be careful with is the amount of gorilla glue used, it doesn’t take much, too much and the glue will expand out of the slots.
Painless...you mentioned "blendone" tape? I probably got that word wrong, but what is that? I looked on Amazon and nothing came up. Also, a good complementary video would be to go over how to reinforce hinges that are getting a little weak...tape?...hot glue? I'm sure you've covered that in one or more videos on the past. Thanks again.
I've found them good but stopped using them as they do fail after a while and flying in hot sunny conditions can cause them to get too soft and let go..

Thank you for supporting the channel, happy flying!

Field repairs - Tape. Bench repairs-hinges. I've had a fair bit of practice thanks to my slightly erratic and sometimes non-existent flying skills :D
Great tips, Lee! Thanks a lot! 😃
I wondered who bought those hinge slotter things and now I know... 🤣
Nice bit of info for new pilots, Thumbs up matey. So have you given up trying to fly the HobbyKing Paramotor ( AKA the Brick )

Great video, I'm always repairing hinges lol. The "Z hinge" is my preferred method for 3D acrobatic planes, gives maximum defection.

Thank you for this! Glad I subscribed to your channel.

super helpful. thank you. now I can fly again tomorrow! #cutdownallthetrees

@@daviddou1408 use milk bottle plastic .. dont use the clear pet style it will snap.

It's my accent! :) 3M Blenderm tape. All covered on that Caipirinha build video..
crackin good vid
I use goop hinges. So much easier and very strong. I also reinforce with hinge tape in a couple of areas.

I find for smaller models that hot glue hinges work well and last a long time - saw these on a old flite test video.

@@Painless360 i haven't had any fail or look close yet but I can see that there's an issue with hot weather!!
