Can't wait to see how you tame the take-off and landing of this beast. You are among the best skilled of RC reviewers I have seen. This plane makes one of our clubs top aces look like a fool on landing roll out when it makes the wing tip to wing tip waggle.
Fantastic & helpful video. Being new to Foamies, when I finally realized the Control Hinges are actually a thin strip of Foam all molded into the Wing, Elevator, etc., I was Shocked ! now I feel better that they can be fixed by your Method. Thanks very much !
Hi Rich, I live in central Florida and found that using welders glue becomes brittle after a while from the humidity and ultra violet affects from the strong sun. Now i am using canopy glue which stays flexible and does not become brittle.
Funny you should ask! Yes, I am putting the video together now... I worked on it a lot today.... I have lots of good & necessary upgrades for it... It is my favorite so far of the 1400mm FMS line.... it is shaped like a bullet and flys like a rocket! I hope to get it out in a few days :)
yes, that's not a bad idea:) In fact, FMS has started to do this on some of their newer planes.... However, if the hinge is good it will often tear off clean in a crash. On the other hand, making it stronger could cause more damage than just a clean tear in the instance of the same crash...
Rich, While I have done this repair myself I always follow up with hinge tape top and bottom. Maybe belt and suspender approach, however, I tend to follow the ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure approach. It really just comes down to peace of mind I guess. I have never had a repaired hinge come apart but I would hate to find out in a high stress maneuver. I also inspect my hinges from time to time to ensure their are no signs of fatigue. You are correct when you say the FoamTac is a great glue for foam planes.
if your short on tape, u can just use a piece of paper as a strap and just use a tiny piece of tape to hold the strap together. but a very nice tip! i was previously just using the stick side of the tape but i was always risking lifting the paint. i like this "cigar rolling" method
Rich, thanks for the quick response back. I agree on that securing the hinges so well could transfer damage energy elsewhere or even increase damage versus a clean break. Do you think Goop product is comparable to the Welder glue you use in this video?
thanks for this very informative information rich, i appreiciate u putting up this video, im new to the hobby and i can always use help on repairs such as this. thanks bro, thanks alot.
I found welder on amazon, ordered it. The pic showed it in red tubes. When it arrived the welder was in white tubes. Will the welder in the white tubes work the same as the welder in the red tubes? It says it's clear for interior/exterior, waterproof industrial strength adhesive for home repair, permanently bonds seals and repairs-all purpose.
Seeing you coated the repaired hinge with the welder's glue, would you say it would be ok to give existing foam hinges a similar coat as a preemptive measure and also to reinforce existing foam hinges?
Excellent video Rich. Hope I can buy a similar glue here in Aus. I tried one product a clear shoe repair glue but it goes a bit yellow after a day or too. Cheers Stew ....
hi bought a sbarch and to my surprise the ailerons and elevator where bowed quite badley, and they had hing tape on aswell,so I peeled that of and the ailerons and elevator came straight away,,any good tip for straightening them out thx mark..
Grate video I have just purchased my first epo plane from hobby king. The instructions were little to none I found these little things that look like hinges made of plastic. Do I need to put these on looks like there is about 15 of them. Also do I need to worry about limiting my tx to not put to much strain on the joints. Thanks in advance for any info as this foam is new to me.
Yes. 😁 I was intending to replace a broken foam hinge on my AXN with CA hinges but saw this and used UHU Por instead. That was 2 years ago and the repair is still going strong.
it can be used in many instances but, epoxy is slightly better for gluing larger areas because it is easier to remove the excess glue and you ultimately get a cleaner finished plane... contact cements like welder and the stuff you get with many kits are strong enough but often they ruin the paint finish if you apply to much glue.... you cant wipe off the excess like you can with epoxy....
I'm modding my Taft viper jet for high speed with a new edf unit. I'm repairing cracks in the hinges, but I'd also like to strengthen the hinges while I'm at it. Would I just do the same with the glue over the hinge and spread it with a credit card?
+Henry Pruett That should work as long as the glue is not to thick... you do not need a lot of Foam-Tac to make a hinge... if it is to thick the hinge can be to stiff
Are there any other products you could recommend to do this job? I can't seem to find this stuff at any of my local building supply or hardware stores. Thanks.
Mega handy vid! I have also been testing UHU POR with this technique and it seems to be pretty damn strong so i would say that would be a good alternative And i have to say you sound a lot like Nicholas Cage!haha
Rcinformer or anyone... please help. What can I do to fix my Planes elevator and ailerons that are breaking away from the hinges at the corners making it extremely difficult for me to get them level enough to fly? I have a 880mm Corsair. It's my first low wing. I've never flown a low wing. First attempt I got up a few feet, and it dove to the left flipped and crashed. I know it's the models issue, not necessarily the servos. I tried and tried to get them level, but the left Alieron's hinge is broken a little nearest the fuse and it sits lower giving the illusion the servos are not set correctly. Same with the elevator. Hope I didn't over explain too much. Any ideas? I'd hate to rip it off and try reattaching the entire thing, can I fix it otherwise?
That's not him, that's the plane! it happens to me also! The real 109s were like that. You can make a nice touchdown, but if you are not on cement the rollout is rough....
Not sure, I have not used it... as long as it is thin enough to brush on, flexible enough when dry so it does not crack, and as long as it does not melt the foam it should be ok....
hey rich I just got my 1st bottle of foam tac. I was going to use it to make the hinges stronger(mine are not broken) do I apply it just like I would with welders just use a small brush and lightly smooth over hinges yes?
I have an even better solution, use FOAM-TAC ... it is a new contact cement that is even better... check at your local hobby shop or go to their website.... www.foam-tac.com/where-to-buy-foam-tac.html#.VI4ZBSvF98E
Nice video, but.... I just can't take this repair seriously! You are proposing to trust my 1000$ of FPV equipment on some GLUE? I guess flying 3d is ok with some generic glue, but I don't want my control surfaces flying off my plane 20 clicks away from me. CA hinges is the best for me in that matter!
No i am not suggesting that at all.... but the plane speeding by in the video has that repaired hinge on it and it is still working today!... It was about $250 at the time... Also, your not supposed to be flying that FPV model 20 clicks away, you may want to check with the AMA or the FAA about that kind of operation...

Awesome, thanks Rich. Your videos have really taught me a lot.
Hi Rich, I live in central Florida and found that using welders glue becomes brittle after a while from the humidity and ultra violet affects from the strong sun. Now i am using canopy glue which stays flexible and does not become brittle.
The new thing is FOAM-TAC.... It stays clear & flexible ... check out my newer videos regarding Foam-Tac repairs:)

cheers for the video from 7 years in the future
Very nice tip. I just got into flying a month ago & this tip will help THANK-YOU!!!

Rich, are you going to do a flight and build review for the FMS Bf109f?
Rich, thanks for the quick response back. I agree on that securing the hinges so well could transfer damage energy elsewhere or even increase damage versus a clean break. Do you think Goop product is comparable to the Welder glue you use in this video?
Pretty flying and a good repair technique.
Awesome tip. Love your channel. Keep it up.
Awesome video thank you so much for the information
As a better, more modern adhesive, do the same except use Foam-Tac.
Will the foam-tac still be flexible? On the hinge? Also, could I use activator on the foam-tac?
@@rogerhartzell544 Foam-Tac is much better than welder. It's more flexible.
Thank you for the great video. Can't wait to try this on my Corsair.
Very useful tip, Richard. Hope you r doing well.
thanks for this very informative information rich, i appreiciate u putting up this video, im new to the hobby and i can always use help on repairs such as this. thanks bro, thanks alot.
simple but very effective , thanks for posting up
thank you for making this video. it was perfect!

Excellent, informative video. Thanks for the tip!!
Is the white tube of welders glue flexible like the red tube

Would you recommend the welders glue to build the enter plane vs the contact cement supplied with the kit? I've normally have used epoxy.
hi bought a sbarch and to my surprise the ailerons and elevator where bowed quite badley, and they had hing tape on aswell,so I peeled that of and the ailerons and elevator came straight away,,any good tip for straightening them out thx mark..

Not sure, I would need to see what they look like.. what plane is it?
would e6000/goop/uho por work (there all similar rubbery contact cements)
Yes. 😁 I was intending to replace a broken foam hinge on my AXN with CA hinges but saw this and used UHU Por instead. That was 2 years ago and the repair is still going strong.

Robert, Change to Foam-Tac for the glue, same Procedure but different contact cement:)
It stays rubbery and remains clear.
Thanks for your video. It was helpful.

Would tire patch gule work for my ruder
Rich, what do you recommend using to clean up excess epoxy to obtain a cleaner finished result?
Excellent and informative, thank you.
I couldn't find Welder in Canada, any idea of another glue like Welder?
Are there any other products you could recommend to do this job? I can't seem to find this stuff at any of my local building supply or hardware stores. Thanks.
What is welder glue, what's the ingredients generic name
Use Foam-Tac instead... same procedure
Another great tip. Check Lowes first. Some HD's don't carry Welders.
I put some of the spinner in slow motion in the BF-109 video which i will post soon!
wish I had seen this before repairing with plastic hinges will remember and will buy some Welders glue
Even better, use the same technique but use FOAM-TAC by Beacon Adhesives. It stays flexible & clear.
Mega handy vid! I have also been testing UHU POR with this technique and it seems to be pretty damn strong so i would say that would be a good alternative And i have to say you sound a lot like Nicholas Cage!haha
omg.you are soooooooooooooooooo good.great info.
Ingenious strap!

What is the glue? Combine Strength Can Bear Flight ?
that spinner is mesmerizing........
Good tip thanks for sharing.

Yes, I have switched to Foam Tac as well, use it the same way...
RCINFORMER so you have switched to foam tac? Instead of welders?
Dude your an rc god thanks!!
fabric hinge bonded in with epoxy is a more reliable and lighter solution. An uncontrolled section of adhesive is not a reliable hinge.
I like your method better!!
Thanks for the video
Great tip. Thanks. Intro a tad long though, sorry.
Use FOAM-TAC glue instead... same repair but better Adhesive... stays rubbery & clear...
@@RCINFORMER Thanks for that!
Thanks great tip !!!
The spinner rules!
I just use clear RTV silicone.
Lowes should have it! do a google search for Welder contact adhesive.... amazon also has it:)
Do you have a way I can send you a pic
hey rich, will the ones in the white tube work I cant find ones in the red tube where I live thx glenn
I have an even better solution, use FOAM-TAC ... it is a new contact cement that is even better... check at your local hobby shop or go to their website.... www.foam-tac.com/where-to-buy-foam-tac.html#.VI4ZBSvF98E
thx. also im going to use it on no damaged hinges to to give extra strength would I apply it just like the welders with a brush ? thx again
alcohol cleans it right up!
Use hinges.
That's one way of doing it:)
How long can you take and how many words can you use to make a 5 minute video last 11 minutes?
How long you ask? You were right, It took me Exactly 11:04... feel free to count the words:)
why on earth do you use two pieces of tape to make the strap ?? surely one piece is much easier ....
because he not using the sticky side which will ruin the paint
SCRAP THE INTRO
I'd better put in real hinges.
Use Foam-Tac, its much better than Welder.... same procedure, different cement:)
Nice video, but....
I just can't take this repair seriously!
