- During the production of Star Wars: Ahsoka, Adam Savage visited the miniatures filming stage set up at Lucasfilm to watch the practical model of Ahsoka's T-6 Jedi Shuttle being filmed. Modelmaker John Goodson and machinist Dan Patrascu spent four months building the 30-inch model of that T-6 ship for the show-an incredible hero ship model not only equipped with lights, but was fully mechanized with a rotating wing!

Old-school model-making at it's finest 👌
It's cool how the wings rotate , gives me millennium falcon vibes which can also rotate with the rotating mechanism behind the falcons cockpit , so cool but unfortunately we didn't get to see this feature working in any scene's, love star wars star fighters !!
It's so good to see new weathered spaceship models still being made for filming!
Definitely the second coolest Star Wars ship 😎👏🏾👍🏾
I want to see more about the filming rig and what equipment they used to film the models
At around 3:13, you can see a huge open air gap between the front clear canopy and the ship frame. We all know that would be a catastrophe if your father was driving, as it would let all of the air conditioning out.
I have nothing but repeat for the craftspeople on the shows. They are amazing. The show itself however..
I’ve just started making models from 1.5mm styrene sheets….i have no idea how you even GET detail or primarily forms like that…..it makes me hate myself
Edit Ah…vacuform……great, I’ll never have one. I wonder what the buck looks like for the skin
I dislike almost all of the new Star Wars films and shows, but not because of the makers. I respect the people who make the models and effects. Their talent and hard work are to be admired. I just wish they were able to display their creations for a studio that has more respect for the characters and stories Lucas created.
Hey that's my dad!!
Your house must have so many beautiful things in!
ask him to hire me! i wanna do that job! what an incredible artist and craftsman to learn from!
This ship feels like Star Wars. It is incredible to see the real model. Thank you for your work, skill, time, ingenuity and patience to bring this ship to life
Wouldn't it be great if they actually put some effort into their stories...
@@youtube_moderator Can people not be negative, like, ever? You don't have to trash Disney every chance you get.
@@ZiddersRooFurry Yes you do, Disney is WOKE C R A P ! Star Wars is DEAD! ASShoka is just that!
That's because it is star wars, ahsoka and anakin flew one in the clone wars
@@youtube_moderator Damn you beat me to that comment :)
I love seeing how the sausage is made, and I personally think the real life models look so much better on the screen. So happy this type of special effect did not die out, but everyone realized it was a great addition to CGI. Hope to see more!
_"I love seeing how the sausage is made."_
Off topic, but OrdinarySausage made a Balut sausage, and it ended up being _so_ disturbing to viewers that he pulled the video... 😅
(someone else reuploaded it, but yea, I see why he pulled it lmao)
@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE "People who love sausages and the law should not watch either being made." - Mark Twain
Believe it or not a good movie/show is a blend of the 2 of 3 (built, printed, CGI) but people rather complain like the guy on the porch/woman in the window...
@@ekij133 Quite true! haha
I guess we're all classed as 'Old Guard' these days. When the 'kids' can't conceive of your non-3d printed techniques, it makes you feel old.
"So it is all 3d printed? No, it is fabricated... And they looked at me like I was talking of nuclear physics" And this is why you need FX historians. No shade to the "young guys". 3d printing IS the future but fabrication still can amaze and impact :)
I’m young, and I still prefer fabrication over 3D printing. Nothing beats kit bashing with found parts!
EDIT: don’t get me wrong, I love 3D printing and designing my own stuff in CAD too. But there’s still something about putting random pieces together and creating something out of scraps that fulfills a certain part of making for me!
So basically all three can exist at the same time...wow!
3d printing is boring af.
@@martinjrgensen8234the printing part sure, 3D modeling though… can be fun
Yep. 3D print is great if you need 2 or more. Fabricating is great if you need just 1 that solves an interesting problem.
I'm glad they mentioned the handling issue of FX models. For anyone brave enough to go back and watch Philadelphia Experiment II - the F 117 at the open was literally tossed off its mount by a runaway moco unit and smashed all over the studio floor at Boyington Studios. All eyes turned to me as I swept up the pieces (I sh*t you not) and took them back to the model studio to cyano the entire thing back together and paint it gray (over an original paintjob of patchwork blacks and grays). To this day, the giant crack in the mostly bondo nose is visible on screen.
The fact that models are still being used warms my heart
Agreed - I love practical FX
I just this past week finished watching *Light And Magic*, and I love that some of the old-school model-makers still work there and still get to work their expertise now and then ❤
This ship is one of the best designs in Star Wars. When I saw it in the last episode of Rebels, my brain said, "I've got to have a model of that ship!!" I really hope a kit manufacturer brings one out soon!
There is not enough Star Wars kits! Do you know if Bandai has exclusive rights?
@@TheEvanevant93 Actually I've heard that Bandai has lost the rights to Star Wars kits, but I'm not sure who has them now.
Well there’s always the Lego one
There could be some 3d printed model kit out there already actually, gonna look for them in a bit
hot wheels starships select has a model of it
Beautiful piece of an engineering model. Real professionals!
Would love to see the actual build.
I'm putting the LEGO version of this together now. Not an easy build.
Hey Adam,
at fanexpo in Philly you signed a 1914 collectors edition of a machinery handbook for my sister. I received that from her the other day and all I can say is thank you! It is one of the greatest gifts I received, especially since your the reason I became an engineer.
So, again, thank you for bringing a huge smile to her face and for signing the machinery handbook. Love your videos!
I'm sure other model shops do this, as well, but one thing I have always loved about ILM models is the intricacy of the internal workings. The first time I saw motorized models from ILM was for The Empire Strikes Back, and they motorized the heads of the Snowspeeder pilots and the ship surface controls. And then there was the Shuttle Tydirium model with its intricate wing-folding/landing gear mechanism. It's great to see ILM still has a model department and they are still building intricate mechanisms for their models.
Mr. Savage I don't know if anyone has told you this, but when you do interviews like this, you come up with the best questions. More than once, I've had the thought of "I wished I would have asked that." And no, I don't interview ppl lol.
one of the best parts about the ahsoka show, was this ship.
I am beyond jealous, The T-6 Shuttle is my favorite ship model ever!!! So cool!
It's great to see that scratch builders are still 'lateral thinking' - the Christmas ball for the basis of a gun turret is the sort of thing I would do!
This model makes me think of the Landspeeder, many similar visuals IMO!
I use to schedule model shoots with the mounting in mind. For example we’d start with the left side mount shots, then top mounts, bottom mount. The less you have to touch the model the better.
I wish I had a video like this to watch for every single starwars ship design. So great to see as a concept artist.
Im writing down "Michaels alcohol pearlescent paint" for the future. Im assuming its the Tim Holtz ones
Id watch a 40 hour series of just the building and problem solving of this model
These guys are so fascinating.
I had no idea that was a model, watching the show. Much like umpires, the best models are the ones you don't realize are there.
I have the LEGO version of this ship. I absolutely love this ships design!
Awesome model! Hate to tell them though, Paw Patrol already has a toy that looks similar and has the spinning wing function.
Spinning models long before then
I love it!!! I was waiting for the "behind the scenes" of the series to see how the make this spaceship!!!!!!!! Thank you very much!!!
Masters of their craft…this is so impressive. Off to watch it again!❤❤❤
"So the wings rotate from vertical to horizontal wing configuration for stability and aerodynamic if it enters gravity wells in space or enters an atmosphere."
"Yeah, but since there is no atmosphere in space, why not just leave it horizontal?"
" Because I wrote it here in the script and I would appreciate you getting up off my back about it."
" OK, let me get back up off that thing."
Absolutely love the fact that they made the models of ships for the shows.
It has that, I don’t know, extra flair to it compared to a cgi ship.
And as a plus we get these in depth talks about them. Superb.
So jealous I wanted one of my own and somehow still jealous cause this model is SO AMAZING.
This was so fun. I love this ship.
Ultra fine details notwithstanding, I'm surprised they managed to cram in all those complications and not end up with a Huge model! That could have easily ended up as a 6 footer. What a masterclass in old school scratch-building, even with modern techniques and micro machinations inside.
I am absolutely in love with this model. t's a beautiful feat of artistry and engineering. Does it really NEED to physically move? No, they could have easily just done that with the digital model. Is it as bad ass as possibly because it can move for real? A million times YES!!! It warms my heart to see shooting models are not going extinct and are in fact evolving and adapting.
This looks and feels like an Old Republic ship. It would fit right in the Knights of the Old Republic game.
I couldn't be more excited for this video! Love learning about these techniques. Thanks, Tested Team!
What fun. Really enjoyed this one. The aesthetic of that ship is fantastic. These guys are masters.
Looks so much better than pure CGI. It should always be a mix of the two, where possible.
10:47 "You're not allowed to see any screws in the Star Wars universe" - looks sideways at Rey's staff...
This is what makes the world come to life. As much as the acting, the music and the SFX/VFX. Phenomenal craftsmanship. Such Handwerkskunst!
I love this ship. Really cool that they are making practical models for these shows!
I feel like they could have used the pole sticking out of the back to turn the wings , and it would have been easier than building it all into the fuselage?
Say what you will about these Star Wars shows but the effects are top notch, love the model work.
20:40 Huh, a Canon 5D Mk4 with a Nikon lens attached to it. it goes against the natural order 😄
Just like Adam Savage to have a flashlight in his pocket. Ready to go!
I love Adam’s enthusiasm. That's why we love him.
It’s great to see that the old skills are still being used. The comment about 3d printing was interesting.
Ir has a little figure inside I kinda like that
This was so interesting. As they are explaining how they built it, I was thinking about how I would do it. And then, should I build my own ship just for my sole pleasure.
OMG... SPACE METAL.
I USED THE SAME WORD. ❤
we definitely need to let Adam Savage create a screen-used star wars prop
Being pretty old now (72), I'm a little distant from the latest Star Wars stories, so I know nothing about Ahsoka.
Anyway, this particular ship to me, has a somewhat 'Buck Rogers' feel to it, courtesy of the paint job.
Ashoka, like pretty much all of the Disney era Star Wars LOOKS great, but the writing REALLY sucks - it's just Tumblr-level fanfic with superb visuals
I would adore a model kit of this.
Finally a design that harkens back to the original trilogy! I actually LIKE this one!
If I had a steadier hand, making models like this would be a DREAM job for me. i am willing to use old-school techniques, and in fact EMBRACE them. I never would have guessed that I was looking at a real-working model while watching certain scenes in Ahsoka. Wow.
They sell hand stabilizers. Essentially a heavy ball joint with a hand rest.
Dan (the guy with the beard) has been living and breathing this sort of thing for his entire adult life. He's living the dream because it's his dream too, and I'm so happy for him.
Some of the tricks remind me of a German fan who built a replica of the hero spaceship from the Captain Future anime adaption and used the ball bearings for the rotating section to transfer the few milliwatts of voltage to the couple of LEDs in lieu of a slip ring solution.
This is wonderful! I love Johns model making. So great that Tested does these videos for us 😊
I am curious if when they are scratch building these studio models if they use any greeblies from the actual star wars model kits or if they are still just stealing them from military model kits.
Most greeblies became surface features, so they wouldn't be individual parts on Star Wars model kits like they were in the old military model kits. People 3D print popular ones like the universal greeblie now, though, so I'd imagine that's what they're doing for a lot of them now that those old model kits are less common.
I love that shuttle design, *_BUT..._* the one thing that really bothers me with the Ahsoka show version, is the loading ramp...
It's built into the "wing", except, the wing isn't thick enough to allow people of average galactic citizen height to embark or disembark that way.
I wonder why they didn't keep the previously established method from the animated shows... 🤔
They scratch built it??! Holy....
One of the most beautiful Star Wars ships ever. So awesome to learn that they used a model for some shots.
Good to see Jamie back on the channel!
EOS 5D mk4 with a Nikkor pancake lens for the motion control shots :P
The 5D has a very nice 30 megapixel sensor, it's practically overkill for the final 4k resolution. And the lens "just" has to match the field of view and have close enough focus distance, because the aperture is way closed down anyway, so almost any lens would be sharp enough.
Where's the Universal Greeblies?
Can't believe it took over a decade to see a live action rendition of this amazing ship design.
Why do you need wings if you are in space and again, why are wings good, if they aren't aerodynamic? Moreover, why do you need a pair of rotating wings? Or, is such a tiny cockpit enough for an intergalactic journey? And I'm not even mentioning that tiny spherical cockpit! What is your chance to fight a battle in great vastness if you're not in a movie called 'Star Wars'? Questions!
It's so good seeing models still being created for film and TV. Kudos to these fantastic craftsmen.
Absolutely amazing! I'm always impressed with the attention to detail and skill ILM craftsman bring to the this galaxy. This is the way!
I am in awe and humbled of the talents required to accomplish this masterpiece.
Brilliant interview that ends up as a cool conversation between model making peers.
It is so cool that they still use models. I hope they always do this as cgi is great but lacks something.
Viewers of the series just dont understand how long and intricate the work involved is. The orginal Star Wars had a budget of 11 million, 6 million of which was on special effects, stages etc, not including the pay of said special effects department.
Thank's Master Adam ! It's ExtraoWonderAwasome Technical report. So soon. May the force be with the model creators and you🖖
I'm sure there will be a HasLab collector edition of this ship somewhere down the line. Right now, though, I am impressed with the fidelity that Jazwares is turning out in their Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron line of toys. Reminds me of the original Galoob Action Fleet toys from the mid-90s.They're using screw plugs and snap in panels to cover up screws and reveal mechanical details and interiors. They don't light up, and they clearly toys, but they're also doing washes and painting scorch marks on them too. Engineering for both film and large scale production has advanced so much.
Absolutely stunning modelling. This is next level, thank you for shining a spotlight on this, as many no doubt, would think it was all CGI.
I remember seeing a picture of this from Celebration, and it seemed NOBODY was talking about it. As soon as I saw it, and Sabine's mural, I knew we'd be getting the Rebels Epilogue in live-action.
One of UA-cam's next picks for me is "Why Aren't Swing Wing Aircraft Made Any More?" by Curious Droid
Beautiful, but I wish they would've maintained the original design from Clone Wars and TROS
Wow, this was amazing!!! Thank you for this video! Awesome this can be seen... The ahsoka ship was awesome and I appreciate the fact, they still hire old school model makers. Love it!
but in the end it looks like CG because they overprocess it, so why bother making a model? Just like your Starfield thing looks like Video/CG.
I have a question for the true Star-wars geeks, is Ashoka’s T6 Jedi ship actually Count Dooku’s as he had one and was the only one shown in cannon before this which is a Remnant of the Jedi….super cool if it is…
Beautiful model
I think it's just great they're returning to models instead of relying on cgi that never NEVER looks as good as physical models. Hopefully this trend will remain in the industry and cgi will be consigned to minimal usage for films and shows in future.
Yep I saw that ship in the Mandalorian exhibit of Star Wars Celebration 2022, that exhibit alone was one of the big highlights for me (also saw the original prop X-Wing that went to auction) hard to describe the feeling of seeing all the stuff that you know from the movies and shows that you are seeing in person.
Adam, is there any particular reason why you haven’t worked with ILM for any of the new Star Wars stuff? Simply that you don’t work for them and they don’t do contract work?
I'm betting toy and model companies will have a very simple way to rotate the wings. Without the need to motorize it, you could probably just do a central tube with the wings sticking off each end.
Do the model makers get any kind of kickbacks off toy companies making versions of it? Seems only fair.
Its nice to see they still use physical models and not entirely digital effects.
Loving this video. We've seen a lot of reference of this ship already, but the in-depth interview with the model makers, and Adam's knowledge and unbridled joy regarding the build process really brings forth some interesting insight, and is just so informative. Thanks so much for sharing.
You ILM vets need to be certain this infamous vacuum forming machine is photographed and mentioned in the histories. This is the second video in as many weeks it's come up in conversation! The other one being the homeworld build you did with Fon.
To my amateur eye it looks creaky and fragile but I'm getting that it's really not. How do the wings not bend under their own weight, especially when mounted right at their tip??
How does someone get into this kind of work? A friend of mine is really really good at model painting. Unfortunately they live in the Midwest. How would they go about getting a job doing this?
A neat trick for the original trilogy models was that they didn't put material around the cockpit to form the window. I believe they did, but reflections of light and blue screen would cast onto the "window", yet this practical model does have windows!
Wow thank you for showing this film! To see the love they have for their craft and a willingness to share. So amazing to see the working model. Adam you are true curator of these historical moments! I loved watching the really old behind the scenes of the Star Wars trilogy.
