Standing outside 10 Downing Street, the Labour leader spoke to the nation for the first time after his party secured 412 of the 650 seats on offer in the House of Commons.
Outgoing PM Rishi Sunak paid tribute to Starmer, calling him a 'decent man' as he stood in the same spot just an hour earlier.

My whole adult life I have watched the Conservatives destroy my national pride and break down the public services for their personal gain. My wife and I have struggled with major mental health issues which were fuelled by the greed and injustice in this modern world. Today I saw some hope and it really has given us some strength back. There is a chance we can look to stay in this once great country instead of trying to move abroad and deal with different problems. I really hope Labour can deliver and bring us all together instead of dividing us. I can understand peoples desperation to scream and shout that Reform is the solution but that's just more division and we will be in the same boat all over again. Hope is a wonderful thing.
And they or Reform might get in at the next election, with Farage at the helm. Watch the pile on from Farage, powered by the mainstream commercial media. I hope not but we will see...

Finally. It's not hard. MPs are public servants and they should be there for us. The last 14 years none of them got that.
We now have a leader who wants to lead, not a clown, a spiv, or a downright liar. Keir seemed to speak to every one of us who are weary and gave us a little spark of hope.
I’m glad to see the Tories out. But Starmer did lie through his teeth when running for the labour leadership. Let’s not forget that.
Starmer is a far more intelligent and capable politician than the last ones

I'm not sure keir can do that, it would be the parliamentary committee most likely. But he can certainly release the investigation findings once done.
I think unless something is egregious (e.g. VIP fastlanes for PPE), it can be better for the country to let the small stuff go and focus your energy on renewal and making lots of lives better rather than a few lives worse

Listening to this, it finally hit me, the change in ideology that has come in, and I've started crying. Realising that maybe there are now people in charge who want to make people's lives better, and not their mates lives richer

I seem to remember a nice lady who became Prime Minister a while back. She quoted lines from St Francis of Assissi. Something about bringing reconciliation where there is strife, and other lovely sentiments. It was a beautiful speech. What was her name, again ? Ah yes. Margaret Thatcher. All that peace and reconciliation she brought to the country.

Starmer is quietly efficient. He has turned Labour round +200 seats after the Corbyn debacle. He has done it without painful populist fanfare. If he can run the country as efficiently, and turn around our fortunes with anything like that ability then he will have earned the win.
...and he did it without getting into bed with the right wing media like Blair had to. I find that remarkable.
Actually more people voted for Corbyn in 2017 than Starmer.

Labour got less votes than both elections under Corbyn and their share of the vote only increased by approximately 1-2% which came mostly in Scotland
The conservative voters either chose not to turn up or just to vote for reform so when it gets round to the next election unless starmer implements real change that Tory party will walk right back into government

Labour has never cared about the poor, it chucked money anywhere it could to get votes, and now we have a population who believe it to be an entitlement as opposed to a means of support. Free market economy should be fair and people should be taught in school how to manage finances, home economics and how to buy houses, how to utilize credit, how to be responsible.
Right now, wealthy foreigners have inflated the house prices, and taken advantage of every laxed rule, if there was regulations in place to protect the vulnerable and to protect the economy from exploitation making it difficult for everyone else, then our vulnerable wouldn't need so much help. It would have been very easy to support them.
If you want strong borders, put international prestige and standing to a side, and do what's necessary.

And progressive taxes work quite well when the money is allocated effectively - many European countries (like France and Denmark for instance), thanks to high taxes, have extremely high standards in education, solid social welfare programmes which provide a safety net for the most vulnerable people in society, and subsidies for lower income families....among many other things

I am an SNP voter, so I was a little disappointed by the result, but I am glad that the tory nightmare is finally over. For now at least. Having said that, I remember the feeling of optimism when Blair took office, only to see it mercilessly dashed against the wall of personal ambition and hypocrisy when he dragged us into a war of adventure and petty revenge. I am still hopeful that Starmer will live up to his promises, but it is measured and mitigated by experience and low expectation. I hope he proves me wrong.

How can he lower mortgage rates. The bank of England sets monetary policy. If bank of England raises interest rates that means your mortgage will go up. It's not government policy to lower it I don't see how they can.

As a Scotsman, this is the first time I’ve ever voted labour. Starmer seems like a genuinely decent person whose heart is in the right place. Hopefully he can deliver!
For over half my life the tories have ruined this country. Now I don’t think Labour will do a decent job at change but I am willing to give them a chance on repairing the damage done and accept that these changes won’t happen overnight

Hopefully that can be done, needs to be done efficiently and effectively. Need to close those loopholes (tax etc.) too where tens to hundreds of billions is missed each year.

"where you can move forward [...] according to your own efforts" - just a reminder that the Labour party got less votes than Jeremy Corbyn's Labour in 2017 and 2019. Therefore , it's difficult to understand how Starmer can help me move forward.

u tax the corporate profits. tax any company that raised their prices by more than 2%. shareholders are mostly living outside of the UK, so u tax them foreigners too.
any company that is owned by more than 50% foreign based shareholders should pay more taxes too.
companies will not move over a tax rate. ask Alberta Canada about their corporate tax cut for foreigners, over $3 bn. Alberta had to fire 1000s of Drs and nurses, just before covid, to cover the shortfall. now there is revenue from the oil sands, but the Drs r already fired and the 5720 albertans already died due to the covid.
ww1 only saw 6170 dead albertans compared to the covid killing 5720 of them.
the corporations can not use after taxed profits to account for tax deductible wages, as it would have the company pay taxes twice. as per GAAP.
some English want to hunt down the shareholders, but many of the shareholders are not living in the Uk.

Yes but to place vat on private schools is horrible. Not everyone who sends their children to private schools is rich. Some of us work hard to give our kids an opportunity and this will make it impossible.

Starmer has already backtracked on multiple pledges which may have resulted in actual positive change - around tuition fees, nationalising utilities and taxing the rich, for example. Labour has tried to stay silent on policies in the last several years, but experts believe that without tax rises more spending cuts in unprotected government departments seem inevitable, i.e. more austerity.
One plan from Labour we do know about is partnering with BlackRock to fix broken Britain. BlackRock is worth a staggering $9 trillion dollars. It is completely amoral, being the world’s largest investor in fossil fuels and weapons. It has been accused of environmental destruction, and exploitation of crises, such as COVID19. BlackRock’s massive size raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest, their impact on public policy, and about unchecked corporate power and its effects on society and democratic processes. Starmer’s plan is that these villains will own most of our public infrastructure in the next few years.
There is a reason this remains largely unreported and Starmer has received very little scrutiny as he has dragged the Labour Party rightwards and made it more corporate-friendly, just as there is a reason his predecessor was vilified. So have your moment of hope, but please, wake up soon.
Couldn't have said it better. I seethe at people like O'brien who want to portray Starmer as the saviour of the nation. He is abusing his role as a broadcaster by misleading innocent public.

A wonderful speech. Passionate. Heart felt. Emotional. And brilliant. He will undoubtedly become one of the greatest leaders this country and perhaps the world has ever known. His speech is matched only by O’Brians deep analyse of it and his eloquence. It is little wonder he is literally in love with his own voice. Wouldn’t you be?

When you read bank of england monetry policy for may interest rates will be set at 5.25 percent all this year and into next year. So labour are not gona to change things.
Like all politicians, the people will judge him and his government by its performance. Like all new governments, the first few months will be a honeymoon period. What will be interesting is when he has to make difficult or unpopular decisions and when he has to deliver the promises he's made. It's easy to promise, it's something else to deliver.

I heard a lot today about Starmer's uninspiring campaign. And I wonder which UK these commentators live in: we have a poisonous RW media ecosystem which now terms any compassion for anyone weaker than you as 'woke' and that rewards lie-filled cruelty from MPs. That (as Jame's has said) the BEST they could do was 'he values his family' shows that Starmer ran the campaign he needed to in order to achieve his aim. If he takes that same steely low-key determination into #10, we will see this country recover.

If the watermark of quality political journalism is to hold truth to power, then Mr James O'Brien has utterly failed.
Maybe he has a second job as Mr Starmers public relations advisor, in which case, his rhetoric is understandable.
It isn't as if Mr Starmers approval figures are the lowest of any incoming Prime Minister in Parliamentary history.
Hope is an abject sentiment.
I know little about politics, but it seems to me that as a person "Special K" is an honest upright person which is what we need in power. Time will tell but it makes me hopeful for this country's future
