Jan-Erik Andersson: The demolition of the "Blue House" (Sininen talo) Art Nouveau building

- Artist Jan-Erik Andersson's video work "The Destruction of Beauty" is published on UA-cam to influence the debate about to role of ornate wooden building for the built environment. The ornate Finnish Art Nouveau buildings with the ground floor made of bricks and the first floor made of wood are unique.
The"Blue House" (Sininen talo) building in Turku, by Carl Armfelt, was built in 1902 and destroyed in 2011 as a consequence of a political decision made by the City Council.
The building is also called by the name of the previous owner Wikeström & Krogius. The existing company with the same name has nothing to do with the demolition.
Please, share the video! © Jan-Erik Andersson 2011
Destroying that building was a crime, someone in city hall got a big kickback to allow that.
rather heartbreaking. this beautiful building should have been around for another hundred years!
Safety comes first while performing any task. Very well demonstrated video showing proper precautions taken while #demolishing a #building.
Those guys are good. They show no mercy on the old house. Just the way a wrecking crew should operate, after all they are there to wreck it, not to save it. Nice job, men.
Vanity of vanities and vanity as culture...
Of course private interests are concerned with profit. The city council should be able to use both carrots and sticks to save buildings like this. Unfortunately there is a big overlap of monetary and political power in Turku...
Quite a quick work isn't? How about now to also implode the Tuomio Kirkko as next? Imagine how many makkara kioskis we could put in there instead of these old stuff all around such a historical city? Really incredible. Anyway, while looking at it I could see all that beautiful, good quality and genuine Finnish Sisu on that wonderful Wikeström & Krogius building: it was like fighting back and bravely holding strong against the power of that demolition machine. I'm shocked and sad to see it.
Those idiots out there have no right to destroy these wonderful buildings.
Kaivinkoneen kuljettaja on selvästikin viimeisen päälle ammattimies, häntä älkäämme syyttäkö, työtään mies teki ja mielestäni aika kauniinkin hienovaraisesti. Siitä pienet propsit hänelle. Perinnerakentamisen ystävänä, löi kyllä kyyneleet silmään isommallekin miehelle. Syitä en kysele, mutta taas on jotain kaunista poissa.
Which idiot gave the permission to brake down this historic building. Now its gone forever.
+flierefluiter johnny I think more buildings like this should smashed and destroyed, it was crap. I would help smash them up.
+heelfan1234 "LETS DESTROY MORE DURABLE HOUSES THAT STILL RETAIN THEIR BEAUTY AND MAKE WAY FOR SHITTY LOOKING 'MODERN' HOUSES" THAT ARE SO THIN AND CHEAPLY MADE THAT THE FIRST TORNADO WOULD DESTROY THEM!"
+heelfan1234 will then ur a fuckin dumb ass
is pow is pow is pow is pow is pow
@@sethmclean7771 I love busting up crap. This is the kind of shit we smash in abandoned buildings when we do New Wave Urbex (smash fest).
it hearts so much!
The way of getting around Heritage listing in Australia is that the building happens to catch fire and burns to the ground...therefore no longer heritage....
Such a shame to see this lovely building pulled down - but that is councils for you - just the same all over the world. The crane operator might have been a bit slow but I think he was just being careful - I noticed he took extra care with the ground-floor windows - were they going to be re-used ?
war ma echt schönes haus schon schade das es weggemacht worden ist :(
WTF they don't build shit like this anymore! Can't we hold on to these beauties while time keeps them in excellent shape like this one was so people like us and future generations can enjoy its presence??? apparently not
waxedta
Dnjpsqu
No because its the out with the old and good ,and in with the new and crappy
why was it torn down such a cool looking building
What was the address of this building?
Koulukatu 2, Turku
i wonder how much money they paid the demo company to tear that down? it had to be a LOT.
Highway going through?
DAMN, THIS IS A SHAME, SEEMS LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO SAVE THE WINDOW FRAMES..
exterior was pretty cool
That excavator operator is slowest operator I have seen.
cool
hienosti meni taas
In our university course we are estimating productivity rates for wood demolition. Do U remember the SQFT of each floor or the total SQFT of the house? Total time of demolition?
Thanks.
+Ricardo Morales Who cares. Just burn the sucker. I guarantee it will be gone in an hour or two and no man power or productivity needed!
This excavator operator needs a refresher course in demolition. He's horrendously slow, must be an hourly rate job!
@jannestrang yep, i don't regret movin away yet
Should have been protected as a unique architectural building. Of course some won't like it's look but that's beside the point!
why ? ...
and its not a backhoe
@demomanwreckit thnx, i can tell you that we found pretty intersting stuff from there
@kellygavin2
They can't really do that because 1: those machines are pretty hard to control and 2: they need to bring the building down so all the peices are small enough and so it is safe to walk around the site and that none of the debree gets on roads.
I Like your video, but I don't like the demolition of this beautiful building. The condition wasn't bad, I thought. I am a retired architect and I made demolition video's, but this hurts.
Why??
OMG, whaT? I would want some of those pieces//
yes me to
Why?
looked move in ready
ich verstehe das alles nicht wie kann man nur solche wunderschönen häuser einreißen undglaublich sowas.....
So fucking shamefull... One of the mos beautifull houses that I have seen with my own eyes.
3:05 hold the phone!
Miksi meillä kaikki kaunis tahtoo kuolla ja suuri surkastua alhaiseen?
Sinne meni palanen historiaa. :/
jösses... meni loputkin sympatiat turkulaisia kohtaan...
Why did they demolish it?
Because it was a load of shite.
The Operator is very slow at work, same like slo mo
This is sad being in housing construction all my life and seeing this, made me wonder there reasoning. Then i noticed how they were taking it done. They are looking for something in the walls and floors. Interesting.
Why do you have to tear down such a beautiful house
Just CRIMINAL !!
Sad, history is worth saving
No it isn't. And since everything is history, you would save everything! Not practical either.
Honestly i think it s the ugly building towers behind the blue house they should destroy!!!
HAIL HAIL TO THE EUROPIAN CULTURE CAPITAL OF 2011!!!!
You only see those houses 🏠 in New Orleans
New operator
Yes that crap could have been smashed down a lot quicker!
4:32...heartbreaking!
Ei voi katsoa, sattuu niin. Kiitos J-E Andersson, että taltioit tämän !!!!
Älkää syyttäkö työmiestä vaan päättäjiä. Kuntavaalitkin tulossa, niin miettikääpä mitä teette.
Oh no ... I thought that Finland is a cultural country. But I'm sorry, this is just barbaric disrespect to the legacy of ancestors! Here in the Czech Republic this happened under f****n' communist rule. But nowadays? People would very loudly protested. What building replaced the old one? Certainly nothing more precious even nicer than the old house ...Thanks for your activity Jan-Erik, greetings from Prague
Gorgeous old buildings exist:
5% of people: save it!
%90 of people: tear it down to build some shitty apartment building!
%5 of people: save our tax dollars!
That house was so nice
@jannestrang Hårda ord, hårda ord...
Climate controlled storage lockers went in its place?
Gotta go its in the way!
You got the right idea and you can't stop progress
Tree Huggers who are whining on here have no right if they wanted to say what they should have just bought the building themselves stop interfering with somebody else's property rights
a travesty really, art neuvo is even rarer then art deco in most areas, it was pretty.
Volvo makes a good wrecking machine
What a shame. I'd have rather seen that pink building next door or those ugly Lego brick eyesores behind get knocked down
So what the hell is this guy doing? He nibbles it away one board at a time. If they were salvaging woodwork, that's one thing but it looks like they destroyed everything.
Americans are great destroyers. They have been known to tear down a house that was lived in, when the family was away. There is a Blue House on court street in Athens ,Ohio that needs to go. It is a den of iniquity1
History crime!!!!
It was a random piece of garbage and good thing they took it down
I agree. It was a load of shite.
All these whinging moaners on here saying that "they" should have preserved it should put together their own money to do it, instead of expecting public money or other third party finance to do it.
Hyvä turku! Olette (taas) tuhonneet palan kultturihistoriaa!
think they got the building wrong it should have been that rancid block on the left disgrace
very slow operator painfull to watch
With as slow as he is tearing it down it must of took him 13 years to do. So damn slow just get it down.
The White House is better that The Blue House. because CLASSICAL!
En tykkää!
I enjoyed the demo. I love busting up shit like this!
Me too! xxx
😂😂 Well, I guess a few of us are just not overly sentimental about things........
@@kellymeadows353 It's similar when we do New Wave Urbex Smash.
Look to the future, not to the past!
@@PreservationEnthusiast I agree, at least when it comes to these structures and material objects.......
Yes.....definately a time for letting go.....and it does come around fairly quickly........a lot quicker than many people want..................New Wave Urbex Smash must be pretty damn cool!
I guess the land was more valuable than the building. Look at what they built in its place. Google Koulukatu 2, Turku. on maps. Horrible modern building.
Destroying the heritage of the community. Those responsilbe need to take a god long look at themselves!
making way for the 1% of course what else
Vandalism
3:02 Pick Up The PHONE! LOL, that is what it looks like. But really it is a sad shame a nice looking building like this was destroyed.
Taking it apart nail by nail would have been faster.
Tämä oli kyllä surullista katseltavaa :(
This just made me so sad and dissapointed. It's hard to even grasp that there are people who actually thought that demolishing this building was a good idea :(
removing history
This no good
The Green party opposed of the destruction of this building. If the Left wing party would have opposed it as well, it would have been saved. However, land use planning is the most important tool to save these kind of buildings. PLEASE make every effort to save the buildings while making decisions in land use planning since it is the only way to save the buildings for good.
Fking Left-tards destroying everything as usual. Why am I not surprised.
@@EzeePosseTV lmao. Capitalist pigs destroy these historical buildings because of money. Shut up. You dont clearly know the story.
@@duckmuller2922 Yes exactly and in that country they are left/far left leaning people in power. Either way greed caused the destruction of that gorgeous old building. And no I won't shut up, you don't get to control when and what to say or stop me speaking. Hmmm it's almost like what leftists do, telling people to "shut up" and/or they try to censor them. Ahhh it makes sense now! LOL
@@EzeePosseTV in 2011 there was both right and left learned people in power. No one didn't care about history, just money. Finnish far left is against this kind of stupidity. Likewise, the Green Party in it between the right and the left.
@@EzeePosseTV And there isn't far left people in power..
