    This is eerily similar to a conversation I had with a good friend in regards to 5's story about two years back. I never felt the characters should of really gone beyond their respective games, however Miku being in 3 did make sense. but I absolutely detested the fact that they felt the need to go down this route. Mafuyu was the only family Miku had left, and after her mother's end he became a parental figure as well. The fact that she would develop a stronger bond with him as a result is quite apparent, and combined with her natural abilities would explain why she felt an unease when he went away to Himuro Mansion.
    We lose that impact, because the romantic angle really isn't implied or present in 1. It instead crosses over the boundary of the strong bond between the two and instead suggests that any bond in general must be love. Family or not, it's gotta be only one solution. It just feels absent of life experiences. Something that you'd expect a robot or an alien to write after observing people. "Two people interacting with each other on a deeper level? It's gotta be love and there's only one kind of love." Love becomes one dimensional, and only serves one purpose. Which then makes it all the worse since the true ending of FF1 was that Mafuyu decided to stay behind. Guess Miku's feelings weren't mutual then, or ever since she kept chasing after him and his reaction just became more so "Ok, sure. Whatever." It makes the incest angle even more bizarre, as Miku comes across as obsessive and naive. Hooray!
    Now if this was all some build up to finding out that Mafuyu eventually became corrupted (either by being involved in Kirie's ritual, wanting to return to living, pick your poison) and placed a curse on Miku during her time in the Manor of Sleep. Which resulted in said child, and why Miku entirely abandons her child. They could even take the opportunity to go down some really creepy territory, and then proceed to have Mafuyu lure in Miu with the intended desire to conceive another child and continue the process. Something that hearkens back to how families would keep bloodlines pure and continuing, and would set up a story of both Miu trying to fight her way out of being trapped, and of the friend/lover/whomever trying to rescue her. I could buy that, but then again I'm also the only person that would and I will entirely admit it (and how awful that is too, haha).
    Really great video, and definitely turned me onto your Wasted Potential series. Good stuff here!

      Really, I'm disturbed by this plot in general because it has even more implication than just Miku character being ruined, even if that's the thing I'm most mad about.
      For Miu to be Miku and Mafuyu's child, Mafuyu has to be actually there in 3 instead the mansion luring Miku in with an illusion, and he has to want to bang his sister. This made zero sense because if that was the case, the escape ending would have been canon: Kirie offered to seal the gate alone so Mafuyu and Miku can get away. The canon ending was supposed to be Mafuyu volunteering to stay behind because he knew an eternity of loneliness is capital B bad. Heck, WOG was that his and Kirie ending was a kind of Yuukon too.
      This development flipped his character 180 degrees, implying that he got bored of being with Kirie, actually lead Miku into the Manor of Sleep and its lethal curse just to bang her, then skipping his way to the location of V for another marriage. Right about now the hell gate is probably wide open with a pissed off Kirie wandering around looking for her wayward partner, which probably would implicate Miu's children. I means, V was about ghost maidens trying to marry the descendant of their cheating yuukon husband after all...
      *Face palm*
      Good fucking job breaking everything, writer.

      Eo, you reminded me that I really should go back and play through the previous titles because I had forgotten some of those elements. Which really just add into the head desking of how things are handled in V. Tremendous points made there!

      @@Riverlianot to mention that WoG also confirms that the sealing effect of the rituals (especially the first two games) won't last long sometime in the future, and people will get trapped/involved in said unsealed spirit gate locations and/or becoming new sacrifices via human sacrifice rituals… so it's likely that Mafuyu chose to share his fate together with Kirie as a spirit to help Kirie seal the hellgatr even longer (besides being possibly a reincarnation to Kirie's lover)
      And according to FF1 guidebook and fanbook, there was about to be the Second Calamity, which is worse than the first Calamity. FF5 MoBW just implies that the Hinasaki Siblings caused the Second Calamity lmao (jk, but still, I wish that Miku's subplot and the retcon to FF3 is confirmed to be a parallel world/non-canon by Shibata and Koei-Tecmo immediately…)
      Oh, according to the Maiden of Black Water official guidebook, Shibata told that Mafuyu is the only one who understands Miku's sixth sense and can comfort Miku's loneliness due to her sixth sense (the description in Miu's Dream Road ending). Well, in FF3, Rei also have sixth sense and has seen Miku getting a Tattooed Curse and even listened to Miku's confession about the events of FF1, especially her brother's fate. Is Rei a joke to Miku and Shibata!?

  • @sylviadelaney245
    @sylviadelaney245 5 років тому +77

    Your idea of Miu being Rei and Yuu's daughter instead of Miku and Mafuyu's works so well and they still could've brought Miku back into the fold by making Miku the godmother. It was pretty apparent with the endings of the 3rd game that Miku wasn't going to be moving out of Rei's house anytime soon and if Rei had gotten pregnant in that final meeting with Yuu then Miku would surely have stepped up and helped her raise the child as her friend as they had a whole lot of new trauma to bond over after the events of the Manor of Sleep and the Tattooed Curse.

      @GalaxyVerse that can actually make sense, im 28 and my olders brother is 53, so it is possible for rei and hisoka to be sisters by using that time span base on their parents relationship. in my case i have the same mother but we have different fathers, my first brother was born when my mom was 16 years old, while i was born until my mother was 40 making a 25 year difference between our ages.

      I think it should have been written like that !
      Plus, what I don't undestand is : When spirits and ghost are "trapped" in a place with something that had happened, I don't understand how that spirit/ghost can appear or be in another place/plot that happened.
      I mean, the whole Miku/Mafuyu thing is a little bit off I think to be in the "Maiden of black water". At the end, it is so complicated to understand how each character stories are linked together, it doesnt even have any logic.
      Sorry for my bad english, I speak mostly french.

    • @sylviadelaney245
      @sylviadelaney245 2 роки тому

      @@ambradeluna Your English is fine. Better than fine in fact. And yes the character threads in this series can be pretty difficult to follow. Even just in the first game so many people get confused about Miku and Mikoto thinking they're one in the same person because Miku mistakes Yae for her mother due to how they killed themselves the same way.
      Only the ones smart enough to look at the Correlation Chart (a feature that really should've been carried over into the later games) end up understanding who is related to who and how.
      Now in the case of Miku and Mafuyu's plot thread being connected to the Maiden of Black Water I think the reason they expect it to still work and not feel off is because the Manor of Sleep already is an amalgamation of different places so naturally it isn't a huge stretch of the imagination that it could also contain parts we didn't get to see from the mountain/forest in Maiden of Black Water just as it contains parts of All Gods Village and Himuro Mansion.
      And since Miu is meant to have been conceived before the curse from the 3rd game was broken they kind of covered their bases loophole wise. We can't just go, "the manor no longer existed so how could she have been conceived?"
      I have personally grown to be a little more comfortable with Miu's origins and Miku getting together with Mafuyu over the years since Maiden of Black Water's release, but it still hasn't stopped making me uncomfortable on a certain level and feeling like this was a plot thread better suited to Rei and Yuu than Miku and Mafuyu.

    • @bunsmasterbunny
      @bunsmasterbunny 5 років тому +9

      It's non canon because it's impossible to happen. Retcons aren't canon by nature because canonicity is something created as permanent. They're meant to try to circumvent the fact that true events and the actions of the people during those events are a reflection of who they truly are and are thus unchangeable in a universe way. The definition and purpose of canon proves this.

      To be honest, You Haibara and his big sister Sakuya Haibara's suspiciously incestuous relationship and having a deranged child Ayako as their "child" in Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (Project Zero 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse) is much better and plausible than Miku & Mafuyu in FF5: MoBW because they're new characters, both characters are bad guys (each in a different way), said relationship is ambiguous and merely implied, and it's played in a negative, creepy light that fits the horror genre.

    I don't actually think Miku's love for her brother was romantic, she just felt guilt for not being able to save him in FF1.
    But the script wasn't written by Makoto Shibata, so I guess it could've just used a popular trope or two.

    • @The4thSnake

      I'm sure it wasn't Shibata's original intention for it to be romantic, but the FFV writers included the sex part, which only makes sense if it was romantic, or if they were ghost puppeted into it, which is debatably worse.

    I didn't play this one due to the console switch, but now I am kinda glad I didn't. I saw the development previews and thought it was weird that they presented the characters in a more sexual light overall. Not to mention the whole Ayane info that got leaked, that makes the lore all the more muddled. It just seems like they weren't thinking about continuity or overall story quality.

    • @The4thSnake
      @The4thSnake  6 років тому +5

      I don't consider the Ayane stuff to be canon. It could be cool if it WAS part of the DOA world, but there's no real evidence for that. And yeah, the sexualisation got toned down some in the western version, but it's still there.

    The4thSnake. Thank you for explaining to those who haven't played the previous works of Fatal Frame series (especially the first three games) about my only issues about Maiden of Black Water.
    It's a shame that they didn't alter said problematic plot in the PC/PS4/Xbox/Switch. (I heard that Shibata port MoBW first to test the waters if FF series can prevail).
    You're almost right about what exactly happened about Miku thing in MoBW and the retcon to the FF3 timeline.
    Actually, according to the official guidebook of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water:
    1. Miku was supposed to be one of protagonists for MoBW under Nintendo's orders, but Shibata thought that it would be very difficult to bring up stories of her from previous games, so Shibata introduced Miu instead.
    2. Miu was supposed to be a daughter of Miku and Kei, but her father was ultimately changed to Mafuyu's ghost for the sake of utilizing Ghost Marriage concept. I wonder why don't they just use completely new characters for both Shadowborn and Ghost Marriage concepts, or change Miu's biological mother if they wanted to keep Miu being a Shadowborn without tarnishing Miku's image and survivor status.
    3. It's true that according to FF3 guidebook, all protagonists' resolutions are well concluded in FF3 and next works have standalone stories in FF series. According to the official guidebook of MoBW, however, Shibata makes use of omissions of Miku's (and Kei's) scenes at the ending of FF3 (according to FF3 guidebook, the unused/uncut ending has 13 minutes long) by retconning the ending of FF3 with "Miku perpetrated the forbidden with the dead at the Abyss of the Horizon (Although Shibata never tells anyone (including producer Kikuchi) who Miu's father is, the evidences both guidebook and in-game documents lead to Mafuyu's ghost), and gets pregnant when Miku woke up, quit her job and left Rei's house immediately. Miku later realized that her lifespan was drastically decreased as a result of giving birth to a Shadowborn (Miu) when Miu was 3 years old. So Miku decides to go to Mt. Hikami to summon Mafuyu's ghost and ghost-marry him (who was sealing the hellgate together with Kirie), because she thought that Mafuyu could later be freed (and Miku can be with Mafuyu together when she dies).
    Actually, you're right, incest is OK in fiction as long as they're handled well. You Haibara and his older sister Sakuya Haibara in Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse's suspiciously incestuous relationship (with Ayako) is much more plausible because they're new characters and their incestuous relationship is merely implied but never confirmed, plus they're both bad guys (each in different way. You is insane + amoral while Sakuya is the final boss of MotLE who suffers Moonlight Syndrome.)
    Let's pray that when FF6 was under development, Shibata changed his mind about problematic, widely-despised Miku's subplot and post-MoBW retcon to the FF3 timeline. I really hope that he properly undo said issues & retcon into a better, proper followup to the original FF3 ending (hopefully using said initial plan elements)

    Here is how FF5 should have been written:
    •Miu as Rei’s/Yuu’s daughter
    •During the end of FF3 when Rei meets Yuu at the Sea of Endless Night, she becomes supernaturally pregnant with Yuu’s child due to her grief over his death and her not wanting to let him go.
    •Miku helps Rei raise Miu until Rei abruptly leaves and abandons Miu (like Miku had in the original plot).
    •Miu hears about Mt. Hikami and goes in search of her mother.
    •Hisoka, who is related to Rei (although not specified by the website; sister/cousin) is contacted by Miku who tasks her with finding her goddaughter Miu and her best friend Rei.
    •Hisoka’s role in the game is swapped with Yuuri’s role, so Yuuri is the one teaching Hisoka how to glance and bring back Spirited Away people.
    •If they wanted to connect the games some more, substitute Rui (don’t get me wrong I like Rui, I’m just throwing out ideas) for Mio; since Mio could act as a paranormal advisor to Ren given her experience in the second game.

    I've heard it said at some point, that there's a possibility of something having been lost in translation here, with the "spirit marriage" not being as literal as it sounds and actually meaning basically just that dead and living individual are ritually bonded beyond boundaries of life and death, ensuring they can reunite in the afterlife and provided their bond is strong enough, the ritual may give birth to new life in the process. Were that to be true, it would mean Miu's birth would be effectively virginal and her parents would be that only in spirit, meaning nothing sexual actually ever took place between them.
    Not familiar enough with Japanese folklore concepts to confirm or deny that, but I'm willing to believe this story isn't neccessarily as screwed up as it would appear at face value.

    I agree, I have no issue with incest or anything good plot wise. I had a REAL issue with the incest with Miku and Mafuyu. I can't imagine how they all sat around in a board meeting and going '' I got it! Let's make Miku want to marry and fuck her brother! lets even give them a child'' and the entire room was on board for that idea... The entire adaption of 1, was Miku and Mafuyu had the gift their mother had. and because of that gift , their mother killed herself. Mafuyu became a father figure and he was all she had. He left, she went searching, he choose to stay with Kirie. I get in 3, she mourned, she was depressed and sad because she had no one. She had Rei, but Rei didn't ''understand'' her because Rei couldn't see what she saw unless she had the camera or was inside the manor.
    If you put yourself in Miku's shoes I could totally follow the '' I was a freak in a family who could see the dead. I had my mother and brother. mother left, I had my brother. he choose to stay with someone he hardly knew leaving me all alone. I have no one left in my family. no one who understood what I went through my entire life''. I get that. But moving on to 5 where she's basically like '' Yeah no... this whole time I wanted to ride Mafuyu the same was I'm riding this boat to my death was the true intentions''. I can't even fucking imagining Mafuyu's ghost like '' fuck yeah! Let's do this! bend over and hike that skirt up!'' I would Imagine Mafuyu would have honestly made her realize the foolish path she was on. snapping her back to reality. The fact that it takes 2 to make a baby still baffles me because again, Mafuyu didn't just lie there and let her ride him like a disco stick. He didn't just go along with it. My point is, they both consented to this for Miku to have gotten pregnant, which is really fucked up going back to both games being 1 and 3.
    Now we are at the point where it's like if Mafuyu consented to the incest in 5, was he always into Miku? Was he already having sexual relations with her and obviously it wasn't publicized? again, as Snake said, I had no real issue with incest, but for them to pull that card in the 5th game and make it seem like Miku only wanted to fuck Mafuyu and he was gone and she loved no one else in the entire world but him, and he consented to the sexual act and implanted his seed in her, is borderline missing a few pages from the mental book. I just can't believe they actually sat down and agreed to this idea without thinking it through at all.

    Of course they brought Miku back, They're establishing the lives of all the characters in the series are in one way or another connected...There's a lot of reading I think you missed
    And in terms of Miku's situation It's a little bit different than that, It was more of a mental disruption from the trauma of game 1 and 3 and in the between time of 4 and 5 all that happened, Miku's mind is destroyed and fragmented, meaning she would have done Anything to see her brother again and that means Anything. Rei's story already had its closure, at the end of 3 She accepts Yuu's death and moves on for his sake like he told her to do.
    As much as I want to agree with it was a dumb decision, I know where they were going because the entire theme of V was that of the mental deterioration of the characters since the mountain area was based off of suicide forest. There's a lot you missed but it's not hard to miss

I apologize that I'm disrespecting your viewpoint here but not every viewpoint is valid when they aren't following what the game actually implies. Incest is not something that can be implyed with it being much MUCH more overt than anything in Fatal Frame 1 or 3. 1 and 3 prove that Miku is canonically not incestuous for her brother and that her storyline in 5 is an official fanfiction.
