Others questions could be: -Usefulness of a PhD in the financial sector -Getting into HF/PE/VC and comparison with the IB world -is an MBA worth it? -finance grad vs economics grad in the job market
Another interesting one could be: main differences in BB banks and why choose one instead of another (eg Goldman instead of Morgan Stanley or Nomura) How are they perceived in the field? Are there any non written features that we are missing?
I go to one of the institutions you mentioned and culture is definitely the main thing, so many people focus on achievement, naturally as that’s how they got accepted in the first place. I’ve spoke to my friends at other uni’s about spring weeks and literally none knew what they were. Whilst most people at my uni have applied to 20+. As soon as freshers was over I heard people mentioning applications.
You could also talk about careers switch (maybe after pursuing an MBA) or “rebranding”, attending a top MSF/MIM Maybe also a ranking of the best msf available out there.. btw keep it up dude !!
A lot of students want to go in IB because of the money which was heavily influence by the media- Anton Kreil made a good video about it However, you will be working with the brightest and top players in the game but work life will be greater than leisure. Also, many people quit but go follow their passion. Look at Afzal and his entrepreneurial spirit. He’s more likely to succeed and is booming because of the character he developed into, the environment, the people and network. The most important thing now is consistency! Let the small things accumulate into something big. Inshallah you will inspire people in Camden and the rest of the world. P.s I live on the same street as you, if I see you about wallahi ur getting it 😂
Could you do a university ranking for IB, PE, and HF? They are all about the same, so I don’t think the schools will change. I know there’s stuff on the internet already about this, but your opinion as someone whose already gone through the process will really help. Also a video about differences between Wall Street in New York and canary wharf/“the square mile” in London would be really cool for someone like me deciding on whether to go to New York or London.
Hey, thanks. The typical route out of university is going into IBD for 2 years and then moving into PE/HF. It's rare for people to go and work for a PE shop or hedge fund straight out of uni - though that's not to say it's impossible. I worked in asset management straight out of university, but many of my friends ended up going to PE shops and IBD after 2 or so years. Will add the video suggestion to the list.
This will never be a sole factor in determining an offer. There's so much more to it. It can work both ways. You can have three candidates each at LSE, ICL and UCL, but the one who displays the most genuine interest, enthusiasm, potential and all round candidate likability will end up getting the most offers.
If you go onto any top firm’s career events page, around September time you can tell which universities the banks are visiting on campus. That is a big give away. Also, a lot of banks do a lot of London-universities generalist events.
Best major for Investment Banking? Also, you should do a video on people who want to move on from investment banking to work for or start their own hedge fund.
Thanks! Difficult to say. Accounting will teach you how to read a company inside-out which will help with fundamental analysis, however, at the graduate level it's more important to pursue an academic area of study that you are interested in as you'll receive all the relevant training on the job when you join the bank/s.
Hey Afzal, first of all, great videos so far. As for myself I do not necessarily want to go into IB but find your videos still quite usefull. I assume that a lot of it is applicable to other industries! Just wondering about the summaries of companies that you "showed" from 7.45 onwards. You got these somewhere or are these a list of your own? cheers
Always try and make the best of any situation. King's is great. UCL, LSE, etc. are better ranked in the league tables, however, it's all about playing your cards right. "It's not about the cards you've been dealt. It's about how you play them." If you're at King's or not, you still have to put in the work, hustle and graft to get anywhere worthwhile :)
Is UCL economics good enough to stand a good chance to get a job in GoldmanSachs doing investmwnt banking? I am not sure where to start to learn about investment banking Btw it is a really useful video!! From Korea x
Thanks Afzal for making such informative video. I am from India and planning to do Msc in finance from mid tier UK University since top tier Uni's are very expensive. I have total 8 yr of work experience in IT. Does my profile okay/fine for getting into financial industry after Msc?
Finance isnt the same as financial math and as far as i know finance degrees are not math heavy and might very well not even require A level math Financial math isn't done at many of the 'top' as an undergrad degree i think? But warwick has MORSE imperial has math with stat for finance and maybe LSE has something similar. If you're talking masters thats different As for finance your typical LSE warwick A&F blah blah if you've read around everyone says the same shit lol
Jeffrey Li thanks for your comment! I know finance and financial mathematics are different but said finance/financial mathematics as their isn’t anything really on financial mathematics. I’m applying for financial mathematics/mathematics for finance bsc at Unis like lse and Bristol. I wrote my personal statement for this topic and am talking with my head of sixth to see if I should apply for MORSE.
LSE, BATH, DURHAM, READING (check ICMA Centre), BRISTOL, STRACHCLYDE, LEEDS, NOTTINGHAM etc My personal advice is to look at Uni brand as Afzal says, not at rankings cuz at the end of the day you will be recruited based on your uni, grades and experience. Look for ones which have their own student funds, developed societies, strong alumni network
I received offers from both Cambridge and UCL, I know Cambridge has higher name recognition but the course at UCL interests me a lot more, and I love big cities. Would choosing UCL over Cambridge be a big disadvantage to my career prospects?
@@AfzalHussein Hi, Afzal I have some topic suggestions: 1.consulting Vs IB Vs big4, which one is the most worth it for a wage perspective, work-life balance, future job opportunities. Comparing the difficulty to get in across the sectors. Which one to pick? 2. The long term career path of a typical banker (ie. Which area they can go to like PE after their exit banking) 3.how should ug student plan out their career according to what they want for their career, and how to find out what they want (I believe lots of student don't even have a clue on this)
Hello I hope you are doing well, I am Shaik Azam from India and I am a graduate from bangalore university so recently I got an opportunity to work for capgemini & deutsche bank so I'm confused with the offers so help me out with this stuff the only problem with the deutsche bank is they are giving a 6 months contractual role and they will decide with my performance and they will be promoting as a permanent position so which....company to join
If I'm honest, degree discipline is irrelevant for the most part as everything is learnt on the job. Of course, doing an accounting or finance degree will help you a little with some of the technicals, but it's important to do a subject you enjoy and can do well in. Recruiters/organisations value diversity in students and employees and thus recruit a varied range of people having studied numerous different degrees.

maths w/eco at LSE or maths at ICL or UCL for best chances of a trading/IB role

What do you think about the WHU in Germany ? Is it a good university for investment banking?
University is only 1 factor amongst many. The individual/student/candidate is the defining factor, not the institution.
West Ham United not great fr getting into Investment Banking
What about Durham?
Love your videos btw.
Have a thought on CFA? Is it good to enter into investment bankin???
