Labour have been on a foreign policy blitz, with Keir Starmer meeting Emmanuel Macron and Justin Trudeau this week. But in an interview Starmer said he doesn’t want a second Trump presidency. So what exactly is Labour’s foreign policy agenda - and is Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy doing enough to communicate it?

On the idea that Starmer making the mildest of mild negative comments about Trump is a diplomatic risk: it would have been a bigger risk domestically not to. Many on the left who are reluctantly intending to vote Labour might change their mind if Starmer refused to even acknowledge the existence of a problem with Trump. And such a refusal would not gain him votes from the centre or right.
If you spend your time trying to get the job and not considering what to if you get the job you will have problems. If trump becomes president again (which sadly id the most likely outcome) then Keir starmer will have to deal with him and Trump is US president he has a lot of leverage do you really think trump will play ball with Keir if he engages (or even had engaged) in Trump bashing
Jesus, to bad mouth your only ally worldwide, great move.
He'll handle it like Hugh Grant in Love Actually 😂
Personally I don't think it would be a huge issue, Trump is going to be very inward looking, has alot of scores to settle, is locked into a lot of the very limited overseas policy that he will have, as an aside all of which won't be good for the UK as a whole anyway. As it happens I think it would be a good deal worse for the UK if its a Trump/Tory combination for the UK, at least the Labour party can offer a level of separation
A great deal of the aid given to Ukraine is in object value rather than cash. They also receive cash. If America scales back it's aid for Ukraine there is only so much we can do to fill the gap since we don't have a large stockpile of anything.
IMO we should never have sided with Ukraine its a money pit a waste to achieve nothing
Christ, I wish my MP made herself as accessible and open to public critique as David Lammy is.
Ask him to marry you
How can anyone prepare for a second Trump term. The man is bonkers and unpredictable.
Exactly what's needed.
No more of this predictable linear thinking failure bollocks of the last 25 years.
@@Noallegiance Linear thinking? Like votes should actually count? There are two types of Trump supporters. The dumb ones have an excuse because they lack discernment. But what excuse do the smart ones have?
@@Noallegiance "liniar thinking" as you put it, which most would call democracy and tolerance, is still much better than ZERO thinking of any kind under Trump.
@@NoallegianceHe threatened Jews yesterday on his social media page. Anyone still supporting this freak for president is a lost cause
@@Noallegiance I also love it when Russians programme me to repeat empty, vaccuous talking points
We ,do not "need to be close to the americans"
a great question. Anoosh, with her tousled hair AND in green - it doesnt get any better!
Their values and outlook are nothing alike. They wouldn't be able to relate or communicate at all. Trump is such a man-child
Starmer will capitulate to Trump if he wins..He doesn't have a choice, the UK is a client state of the US
A man-child who does not like war. A man-child who does not like open borders. A man-child who does not like top-down corruption. A man-child who does not like the suppression of that laptop.
By the way did u know that the Stuart's were black and blacks built everything important In British history? Did u know that because I did not
Please don't do a demeaning 'Theresa May' dash across to Washington DC, it was cringingly awful and gained little diplomatically.
A green commitment from the un 😂😂😂
Lots of questions that you'll never have to actually deal with or solve... And you'll still be wrong if you did! Talkie talkie numpties!
Putting aside the frightening thought of Trump, the second term. The UK will always suck up to the US whoever is prime minister.
Unfortunately brexit has made it much worse since we're begging the US for favorable trade relations and will probably concede any foreign policy demands to stay close to them. So it could lead to another situation like the Iraq war where we mindlessly following the Americans into a disaster.
@superhumantvftw7214 not sure Trump would enter into a war overseas. Unless it was to prop up a dictator
@@BONK_2000AHH Brexit again just can't move on can you.
@@BONK_2000 The Iraq war was successful. We defeated Saddam and his military within a month and established a democracy. Only mistake we made was sticking around for so long. Should have left in 2003 immediately after forming a new government and left them to deal with the fallout however they saw fit
Saddam was a threat to our allies in the region and he was trying to develop nuclear weapons just like Iran is trying to do now. And the US as well as Israel and Saudi Arabia have all said they will not allow Iran to possess Nukes no matter what measures have to be taken in order to prevent that from happening. We expect Britain would also join our coalition
He would consult with Rupert Murdoch first
It is good to see Starmer being a bit more bold, a bit more confident. He has to convince some that he has a sense of direction and the ability to deliver. Lets be honest , who on the left/moderate side of society want a load of right win nasties in the Labour camp. Keir needs to emphasise the difference and sure, alienate them for the better.
With a barge pole
I suppose that'll finish our support of the Ukraine then
That's Putin's last roll of the dice: hold out 14 months and then there's a 50% chance of payoff.
Badly.
Sir Kier Starmer is a barrister he would wipe the floor with floor with trump!
Starmer would do whatever Trump told him to do.
He'll bow and fold like he has on most things, man has no spine.
If Trump gets back in we are all doomed.
Will US-UK deal include freedom of movement?
Kier Starmer is a barrister, could wipe the floor with trump!
That is not an important question.
The important question is how will Europe cope with Trump renewing his close relationship ship with Putin? Heaven help Ukrainian.
You have to remember Donald Trump holds the Mexican socialist president in high regard and has respect for him. The difference between Labour and the Tories is not significant in comparison to the difference between a Democrat and Republican. The only UK party with very similar ideals to a Trump administration would be the Reform Party.
A fascist/authoritarian USA given the trajectory of the GOP perhaps. A larger space between both countries would be my first instinct, but while the UK deterrent is courtesy of and by the US.
Labour is a status quo party. Business as usual but quietly..
If trump gets in again he will completely dismantle US democracy.
How would Kier Starmer handle a leak of who proposed him for membership of the Trilateral Commission???
Now, there's a question for Andrew Neil to ask!...
a
Anoosh Chakelian, Freddie Hayward, and kind of... Rachel Wearmouth.
could not be worse than the shower in now.. Mind you people said that about boris and fruss,, how wrong were they
They have a policy that they have actually committed to? Not convinced.
What's the supposed big issue with China?
Strategic economic supply chain dependance.
The era of Total globalisation is dead
A lot of political posturing by pen pushers who couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag..
As long as Trump doesn’t ask Starmer awkward questions about his reluctance to prosecute the grooming gangs when he was DPP, then the relationship could flourish.
Why would someone who's modeling agency was a cover for grooming gangs care about that?
Also, Starmer did prosecute a lot of nonces.
It must be horrible to have an opposition you can only lie about..
There is no preparation for Trump. Keir can't handle a door.
He seems to have handled his professional life well. What accomplishments in your life give you the right to judge him?
Seriously? Starmer got to the very top of his profession before shifting to politics.
Have you got any criticisms that actually make sense?
@@Geffo555I think the Conservatives are employing the same troll farms as Trump because they post exactly the same comments on Biden stories.
I assume the software picks up the name Trump (and any other name) in the title and posts a prewritten comment.
Starmer fans are all here apparently. I count 4? 5? LOL
If the question starts with "How would Keir Starmer..." the answer is always "Poorly".
Would still be miles better than the troglodytes we've had for the last 13 years
@@BadgerBoy59I doubt it as Labour are as equally clueless as the Tories
Is that how he took the Labour Party from dead in a ditch to a consistent twenty-point lead in the polls and the brink of power? Just think about what he could accomplish if he decides to apply himself.
@@gio-oz8gf yes by copying the Tories and ditching progressive policies
@@gio-oz8gfLol, that's Blair and the pro EU lobby, nothing to do with sir kid harmer.
