Lionel rose hadn’t even seen this calibre of boxing. let alone fought at this level.he neede to be brought along abit longer . He had the athletic abilty of a ray Robinson .or mayweather. This fight ends his career , and life essentially. Alcoholism, drugs and jail is what he got .should have been one of the greatest

I am Australian and I hated Olivares for what he did to Rose but at the same time I was in awe of the mighty little Mexican and he became one of my most all time beloved fighters.

Lionel Rose came off the Olympics and found himself fighting for the world title as a 20 year old. He won a points decision and defended the title at home and then fought Olivares a long way from home at 21. He fought at a high level a few more times but it was too much too fast.
Ruben Olivares was second in boxing and lost his chance to go to the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. That same year he won the golden gloves tournament in Mexico city with a broken chin . These two had a written destiny to meet soon or later.

Rose had already lost to Castillo, but Rose was given the victory by decision because the judges were biased. Olivarez was told about it, but Olivarez said very sure of himself not to worry because he was going to make sure Rose would end up on the canvas for the full count on the ninth, and he delivered but earlier, in the fifth.

Rubens body work was fantastic, he was raking Rose's mid section over and over again. You knew its just a matter of time before Ruben caught him with some bombs to the head, rose was on defense lowering his arms to protect his ribs. Olivares like a hungry pit bull this fight.

A super fun, all action, entertaining fight, right here! I've been watching a lot of lower weight class fights from this era, haven't really ran into a boring fight yet. Watching this, although it turned into a fire fight early, before the end of the first round and Rose being violently stopped in the 5th, I was really impressed with Rose's skill set. He was pretty damn slippery with his movements up top here, he had Ruben missing many shots, and missing wildly at times. He also defended well on the ropes too. I seen someone say that there was some weight issues for Rose coming into this fight and how that probably had a lot to do with how this played out. Unfortunately, that's boxing. Tough shit. One thing about boxing, both fighters almost always enter a ring with some ailment, we the fans usually never hear whatever problems the winner brought in with him though. Anyway, Ruben was seemingly unfazed by much of anything Rose gave him, but the opposite cannot be said, and that is what affected the fight most. Ruben's pace was intense. Had Rose gotten into later rounds as the commentary states to be his likely plan, who knows how it may have ended? Maybe Ruben wouldn't have had the gas late in the fight? Who's to say. But no, Ruben appeared to be a vicious puncher here as a bantamweight, and early in this fight he's landing punches that appear to be affecting Rose greatly. I mean, knocking the mouthpiece of Rose out 3 times within only the 5 rds?

Lionel was physically shot to bits by the constant wasting to make the weight. He apparently had wanted to vacate the title and move up a division but management wanted the money. Boxers are often cash cows to be sacrificed. That said, Olivares was great champion.
He was never going to beat Olivares under any circumstances.

Rose very cunning, let the mouth protector to fall to gain time and recover, but in spite of this and other dirty tactics, he could not overcome Olivarez and he ended up knocked out on the canvas. Great fight.
En ese momento nuestro querido púas Olivares estaba en plenitud de su carrera boxistica y a cualquiera le hubiera ganado. Leonel Rose no era un flan, buen boxeador y aguantaba golpes. Excelente cátedra de boxeo y hambre de triunfo.

Outmatched big.Rose had the agilty and athleticism to be a great.But he had never seen this level let alone faced as fighter like this.The pace, pressure ,technique and just grit up against a phenom.Because olivarez is one of the greatest.especially at bantamweight,Rose would need more experience, better trainers and he would have to be at his very best to beat this guy.Sadly hd just withered after this fight, waste of talent

Cuando olivares llegó a esta pelea traía un récord invicto de 54 peleas ganadas y 52 kos en su forja, era todo un asesino el oriundo del barrio de la bondojito, actualmente acude todos los domingos a la lagunilla a vender sus recuerdos y te cobra por tomarte la foto con el y tu lo ves y físicamente es chaparrito y tu le ves los puños y las manos y son pequeñas, creo que su fuerza ya era natural además que se basaba en excelente técnica tenía un gancho al hígado demoledor, grandes golpes curvos, muy parecido a Vicente Zaldívar otro gran boxeador en peso gallo, también, Zamora, Carlos Zárate brillaron en ese peso por eso ese peso es la división de oro del boxeo mexicano.

Rose is undoubtedly one of the greatest fighters we produced in of the most competitive, tough eras in international boxing. No disrespect to Olivares, but Rose lost this fight on the scales.
He was offered a hard to refuse sum of money to fight Olivares, with American promoters encouraging Rose to overlook his opponent by luring him with talk of big money fights at Featherweight.
Reportedly Rose has laready begun to let the hype start to inflitrate his thinking.
I agree and disagree. Rose was one of the best Australian fighters and a win over Harada in Japan was a major Australian victory, one of the greatest Australian wins actually. However he was never going to win this fight, even they had fought at featherweight. Olivares was too good and far too strong for him (& most others). Same outcome at featherweight. Rose never captured the same success when he did move up in weight sadly.

It was a great win for the great Ruben Olivares. But, I was very disappointed with Lionel Rose's performance.
Rose looked weak. Lethargic with no fire. What happened? This is not the same Rose that took the crown from the great Fighting Harada. Something was wrong with him here.
Rose had a terrific fast jab, a good left hook, and great ring generalship. He could really box your ears off. In this fight, I didn't see any of that. He was also fast and had great foot movement.
Rose was probably weight drained or overtrained. He probably left everything in the gym.
I am not saying that Olivares would have not beaten Rose. But, I believe from watching the Harada and this fight that it was night and day. It would have been a thrilling affair if Rose would have been in great shape. Something was wrong with him here.
Maybe Lionel tight at the weight ?
