I had saw the first version of Bastard and didn't realize that it took place in the future, but seeing the reboot that was on this list, in the first episode you see the ruins of modern cities.
Re:Zero is my all time favorite anime! That series has the absolute best use of character development that I've ever seen in anime. The characters are so well written.
The redo of the healer is actually being on here, especially at 3 ovrer Made in Abyss. It has the best best world buliding of any fantasy anime and probably any anime ever. Its also actually a good show, unlike redo of healer. Like this is genuinely disrespectful to Made in abyss as the only thing redo might have over it is shock factor, and even then, it's a big maybe.
@doctorsniffles I personally think it gets good from the start as I think the world buliding and set up is top tier. Though the turning point in the story is episode 10 of season 1 and then after that, it only gets better, ending on the fantastic episode 13. If you don't like it by then, it's fine. it may not be your thing, but the tone and direct the series takes after episode 10 of the first season is what the rest will be like. The series after season one only gets darker. There is the movie you watch after (which is movie 3) as it is the direct follow-up. Then there is season 2, which is quite possible one of the darkest yet most beautiful haunting ever made. If you don't like the direction the series takes in episode 10-13 of season 1, then you will probably not like season 2. I still recommend the show as there is truly nothing like it out there. It also had the greatest soundtrack ever made, so there is that.
Berserk is a masterpiece. It's HELLA DARK THO!!! Tread lightly. I truly believe that it's the greatest Manga ever. Guts and Griffith are the equivalent of Batman and Joker (also my favorite pro and antagonist). Sword of the Berserk (Dreamcast) is a hidden gem on the console. The movies are incredible. The anime is great. 2016 is very good if you can look past the idiots who changed the artwork. Wtbs, Berserk is a must watch/must read.
Watch the 97-98 series. NOT the 2016-17 series. Avoid that. The movies are ok, but they're re-tellings of the story told in series. So watch the series first, then you can watch the movies if you want to. As others have said, it's *dark* like *DARK*. But it's also sooooo good.
I think watching the 97' anime and then reading the manga afterwards is the ideal way to get into Berserk because the soundtrack will stick with you in a good way.
My biggest mistake considering this list is, I read and watch Berserk Manga and Anime before any of these animes on this list. And nothing from this list is Darkest yet Perfect by representing Dark Fantasy anime than Berserk IMO.

As a Berserk fan I love it when a decent percentage top 10 Dark animes have Guts or someone from the Berserk cast be the thumbnail for the video.
Of the entire list, only Berserk and Claymore can be classified as dark fantasy.
Clare is basically like the female version of Geralt. If you love The Witcher. Claymore is definitely a must watch.
Berserk will forever be my number one anime.

There is no plot armor on that shows, just self determination and not being screwed by the missions assigned by the organization.
