The first old lady who was selling teokkbokki in the street and gave him free . What a touching moment considering she's not that rich. Koreans are so kind and generous. Love and respect from NY.
The first lady was so sweet!! She was saying it was spicy in the beginning so she asked you to sample, then she said "thank you for visiting Korea; this is free for you. Sorry that it's too spicy for you"! That is so touching.
Grandma didn't receive money because she liked the way a young stranger tried her food. She is a warm-hearted grandmother. Grandma wouldn't have wanted to receive it sincerely even if you gave her money. So all you have to do is be grateful. Koreans often express their true feelings like this.
Hi Ken, I'm happy to watch your videos. I'm Korean, but I'm currently living in another country. When I feel homesick, I always look for videos about my hometown. I like your travel style, such as trying local food, and visiting supermarkets and local markets. The first lady who gave you free food and the man who paid for your food on the first day represent what we call "Jeong" culture in Korea. It is a culture of giving without expecting anything in return. I really miss this "Jeong" culture; I think it's a very precious part of being Korean. Anyway, I'm really happy that you enjoyed South Korea. Thank you for uploading videos about your travels in my country. I hope you and other foreigners love South Korea as much as I do. Thanks!
She says that she is so thankful that you came to Korea so she is not accepting the money. It is lovely and moving. The place you were is near Hongik univ. station. Between Hongdae and Sinchon.
Hey Ken! At the moment I'm learning Korean, and I find it super exciting to listen and be able to understand a few words here and there in your videos. I really appreciate the uncut and raw interaction between you and the Korean people - it's like I'm there with you myself. I have never seen a video, and chatted and nodded to the content before, so I think it's really fun to see you enjoy Korea. The way you interact with Koreans gives the video a really authentic feel to it. I can't wait to watch some more! I have been searching for videos like yours on UA-cam before, but it's always super short and fully edited with random sounds and noises which I find sometimes annoying. I am so glad I found your channel! Also, I'd recommend giving the translation app "Papago" a try if you want something other than Google translate. :) Best regards from Norway!
You must be her first ever customer on that morning. The aunty's really shine after she saw you ken. Thanks for making her day. She looks very hardworking.
The old lady was thankful for you visiting her country and was sorry for your not good at eating her spicy food. Thats why she didn't accept your money.
I'm Korean. It'll be not easy to find trash bins on the street in Korea. Korean government removed all the trash bins on the street for various reasons. The main reason is to keep the streets clean. Overflowing trashes on the trash bins were so disgusting and nasty. and there were so many flies around the trash bins especially in summer. Then, people started to deal with it their own way. In a word, they prioritized the cleanness. By the way,, street food usually reflects the culture of a country; is easy to find, delicious and inexpensive. It is very good experience. Try many Korean street foods during your stay in Korea.
This video just reinforces my desire to visit Korea. I would love to go to try the amazing food and learn about how they make the fermented pastes. the experiences you have had has shown what a beautiful country it is with such friendly, helpful and kind people.
What a day trying all those street foods ! Everything looks yum yum 😋 It's indeed a great experience, Ken. I truly appreciate your interesting content....enjoyed watching from start to end. Thanks a bunch for making my day. ❤💞❤️
I'm almost 70 years old and a Korean American living in N California. I went to Germany in 1990 for the first time and visited there several more times. Especially in 1996, I traveled solo with one carryon and a backpack for a month! Since I was studying music, Germany was a very interesting place to visit! In cities, was easy to find English speakers. I love music by German composers and Germany was very beautiful! Thank you for your video!
Little information. Hong-dae is a abbreviation of Hong-Ik Daehakgyo, which means Hong-Ik university. The place where taxi driver drop you off is front door of university.
Squid game is called 'Squid Game' in Korean, but they used the Korean word for 'Squid' which was likely why he didn't understand you. If you're curious, it's 오징어 게임 (ojingeo geim) :)
Pro tip about the trash thing: In Korea, you won't find public trashcans, and same goes for Japan. I always carry a personal trash bag in my purse or bag when I travel there and dispose of at my lodging, or you can ask for a trashcan (pronounced "suh-re-ghi-tong") at restaurants and dispose small trash there.
6:15 She said thanks for visiting to Korea so it's on her. 13:00 It's 어묵 / ʌ muːk / and has been called Japanese word 'odeng'. 19:03 It's made of sugar and baking soda. 20:08 We say 오징어/ ɔː dʒɪŋ ʌ / 게임(=game). 오징어/ ɔː dʒɪŋ ʌ / means squid. Dear Ken Abroad....warm greetings from Germany.... It's great how you deal with people and situations abroad... always very friendly, grateful and interested! That's exactly how you get along with people best---my experiences too! I have never been to South Korea, but I was very impressed by the friendliness and generosity of the Korean people....thank you for these beautiful impressions.....
Those fish cake skewers are commonly called 'odeng' as they were influenced by the Japanese fish cake stew 'oden.' In standard Korean, they are called 'eomuk.' Lots of Japanese food or Japanese-inspired cooking methods entered Korea in the early 1900s when Japan colonized Korea. You can find many of them at street stalls and also restaurants. Just to name one, the 'Koreanized' version of the Japanese pork cutlet Tonkatsu -- 'Donkaseu' -- is an immensely popular meat dish in Korea. Similarly, the Japanese were also inspired by the French Côtelette when they came up with Tonkatsu in the late 1800s. All in all, it's an example of how cultural exchange creates so many interesting versions of a similar dish that we can try & equally appreciate.
That first lady was concerned that it maybe spicy and gave you a piece to try. Then she gave you the meal for free. Koreans do that a lot (I am Korean American btw) I love Koreans they have this "Jung, 정 " it means like caring. Basically think of you as a Homie once they talk to you and you give them a good vibe, then you are homie to them
I found your videos recently and binge-watching all the Korean episodes! You remind me of my German mate Jonny, cuz some of your reactions are quite similar to his! Love how polite you are despite going through all the hard times in the far east without knowing the language :)
I am moving (retiring) to Thailand in the Fall of 2024. After worrying about my cat being confined to the (pressurized, temperature-controlled, forward) cargo hold, I discovered that Korean Airlines has a few dedicated seats in its planes for passengers to fly with their pets. I was so happy and relieved. To see in your video the pet shop, and street vendor selling pet outfits (!) gives me the impression that Korea is a pet-friendly culture, perhaps moreso than many other Asian locations.
Hey Ken -just started watching you and have been enjoying the South Korea and Indonesia videos. We just got back from Seoul. Everyone was also very nice to us as well and were very helpful. I want to let you know they will almost always be happy with a tip even if they initially say no. Especially with those older women, they are probably just getting by so we will leave something even if it’s on the side, say thank you and walk away quickly with a smile. Enjoy your stay!! I can’t wait to go back
Tteokbokki is not regarded as a main course; it is more akin to a snack or a side dish. A traditional Korean meal typically features rice accompanied by pork or beef.
Annyeonghaseyo Ken, a real treat to take us along to see how you enjoyed all the different types of street food.😋Makes me hungry too.😂Yes it will definitely warm our hearts when one is being so welcome with such kindness and generosity especially in a foreign land.God bless her.🙏Certainly nice to have a nice beer after all the walking🍺Cheers Ken and have a blast in Korea!!Warmest wishes from Malaysia!!💕🇲🇾
Hi Ken. Fish cake is a nice combination with tteokbokki. She had some on skewers to her right - it helps absorb the spice. The auntie added some fish cake broth to reduce the spice for you. The broth is actually yummy.
If you want to experience one of the best places for just chilling, strolling, or having a walk around, and also have fun doing some stuff, I recommend the Songdo central park city. (Highly recommend visiting it at when it's night)

The most popular beer brands are Hite and Cass. These are light/watery lagers and are designed to be refreshing; meant to be taken with food (pairs well with spicy food). Kloud (Pilsner), OB (Lager) and Terra (Pilsner) are examples of more flavorful mainstream Korean beers. I suggest getting Korean Fried Chicken and pair it with beer. Korea makes amazing fried chicken. Bulgogi Jeongol is a favorite noodle dish (beef, veggies and noodles). Korean BBQ is also a must try, but you may have to order for two people in such places. I don't know if you can find in Seoul but I personally liked Dwaeji Gukbab. It's a porc soup and probably you can only find Busan metropolitan but all of my friends liked it.
Fish cake is called eomug in Korean and is eaten dipped in soy sauce. The word oden is Japanese. The lady at the stall was not good at English, so she explained it with a name similar to Japanese food.
I finally watched the video from the first day because the algorithm recommended it. Speaking of safety, it's not like you haven't gone outside at dawn since you came to Korea, right? Korea is a place with good safety and security so that children can roam around alone. It would have been nice to feel the Korean atmosphere at dawn. Also, I was seen eating only street food, so it would be a shame if I didn't try the famous Korean BBQ or other representative dishes when it comes to Korean food.
🍜What's your favorite street food to eat?

Hello Ken, to be honest that is actually a very nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks 😊

i was totally gagged when you asked "can you drive?" to a gddmn taxi driver. literally the stewpeedest question i've ever heard lmaooo 😂
Hahahaahhahha
The taxi was parked. Isn’t it global common sense to ask whether the taxi is on service while pulled over?
The lovely lady says, 6:05 ”You came to Korea, “ho~~” sorry, it’s spicy“ 5:54 ”Thank you for coming to Korea.” 🥰💕
Love your video's ❤❤❤ken 😊

Ken you can not leave Korea without trying a corndog! Potato corndog and/or cheese corndog, they are synonymous with k-eats, also ARMY STEW!! 😋
The closed store you found after eating egg bread is a shoe repair shop.
The second lady misinformed you on so many levels 😂.
Dont believe a word she said! 😂😂
My favourite when in Seoul (pronounced "Sole" in English if no one has pointed it out yet) is snow cheese fried chicken.
Snow chese sounds interesting 🤔
Thank you for being so patient and humble. If you have the time, i recommend jeju island for a different pace.
