Before and Beyond the Malay Dilemma: In Conversation With Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad

- Welcome back to Pathways! This is a very special episode.
In today's conversation, titled "Before and Beyond The Malay Dilemma", I had the opportunity to not only talk about a crucial social issue in Malaysia, but also to do so with the person who created the concept:
Tun Dr. Mahathir, the 4th and 7th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
It was a monumental privilege to speak with Tun about his thoughts on education, and it was a truly incredible experience. Walking into his office felt unreal, but so did actually speaking to the man himself-shaking the hand of the leader of the country in which I live, the country that has shaped my life since the day I was born. It was deeply surreal, nigh unimaginable, yet it happened...
And there I was, in conversation with the world's oldest elected Prime Minister, the creator of my father's final legacy - the book he had written after being cast out of UMNO - The Malay Dilemma.
The conversation was deeply fascinating, and I am sure you will enjoy it. Here's a summary of what we discussed: stories of old, such as the legends of Hang Tuah and Hang Jebat, The Malay Dilemma, Tun's medical background, and his journey into the Education Ministership and Prime Ministership, covered throughout his memoirs. We also covered his thoughts on education, medicine as a philosophy, his way of life, his approach to politics and administration, and Malaysia's relationship with the wider world, including with Singapore, as captured in a discussion featuring the late Lee Kuan Yew, the former Prime Minister of Singapore.
As we delved into Tun's career, we discussed the UUCA (Universities and University Colleges Act) and his thoughts on it, as well as his views on science and mathematics education in English, embodied in the PPSMI policy. Our conversation was also deeply focused on books, as we explored both Tun's The Malay Dilemma and his memoir "A Doctor in the House", alongside the late Lee Kuan Yew's "From Third World to First".
You will find links to these books below.

This was an incredible and transformative conversation with a world-renowned leader.
Love him or hate him, one thing is certain-you cannot ignore Tun Mahathir.
It was a manifest pleasure to have this conversation with you, Tun Dr. Mahathir, and it is my great privilege to share it with the world. Thank you for your candid thoughts and your presence, for constantly surprising us with your 150 km/h wild rides - I hope that won't happen too often but hope you will enjoy yourself! I look forward to a better Malaysia, one that will continue to stand tall and lead among the nations of the world.
Interesting! I rarely see interviews that focus on Tun’s personal side as an individual person. Keep it up 🎉
Thank you for the kind words!
It was an honor to interview Tun Mahathir and I look forward to seeing him on his 100th birthday as well. It was a wonderful opportunity to get to speak to one of the crucial figures of our history and I look forward to more engagements like this in the days ahead.
Thank you so much for watching and I look forward to creating more in the days ahead!

You are most welcome. It was an absolute honor. I look forward to speaking to him for his 100th, if that opportunity should arise. Thank you for watching!
Thank God Tun U r still fighting for peace and love... Hope u live healthily till 120... Amen
Still never changed.
Tak kisah apa orang kata, tanpa sumbangan Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia takkan pernah merasai menjadi sebuah negara yang dihormati dan disegani.
Modern because we have money from oil & gas and many other natural resources but many leakages. If PM4 was not him then we would have seen much more progress etc ie without corruption, without cronyism, good governance, no enrichment of family members , politicians etc, better harmony among all races due to no playing of 2Rs, better standard & quality of educations. We should be better than Singapore in all senses ie currency, leaders, good governance, meritocracy, infrastructures, grooming and nurturing of leaders with statesmanship. He left us with the bad state we are in today therefore we need PMX to implement reformasi to undo the damages PM4 did.

Debatable. I think it’s less that Tun Mahathir was bad (I think he had a debatable legacy - much of it was good even as we say that much of it was bad), and more that Lee Kuan Yew was exceptional even amongst other world leaders and crafted a society dedicated to meritocracy where race wasn’t a primary consideration.

In Sarawak, the natives r the majority. Yet they are not holding the CM post.
That is definitely a bit of a problem there, and I think that you can see that manifested right now in the whole discussion about the Senate. MA63 is definitely something to look back on, and if Sarawak can use that for the benefit of the people within the state, then it definitely should!
Best PM we’ve had thus far, no matter how much you dislike him
This is debatable. What does ‘best PM’ mean, really? Would love to understand what that entails.
Best in overall. At least he is the smartest leader we have in Malaysia history, i dont see any other leaders regardless of within UMNO/MCA/MIC/DAP/PKR come close on this aspect
Amazing job Victor! No doubt that this opportunity would have come to you ⭐️ Such an interesting watch too! Keep it up :D(Asking tun about Anime! Love it 😂)

I'm not a Malaysian Malay but I love reading this book, The Malay Dilemma.
It is a very educational book and I think that everybody should read it. Thank you for taking an interest in Malaysia, the Malays (although you may be a Malay of another heritage - Indonesia Philippines Brunei or otherwise perhaps?), and the culture of my country!
Thank you for watching!

@@iskhrm1688 It’s a very…Colorful career. Can’t say I agree that Tun did the right thing there all the way, but we all do things based on what we know are true or that we believe to be true, and all I can say is that he was true to himself in each of these situations 😅
We would have been the best Asean or even Asian Tiger if our pm4 was not him but only if Tun Dr Ismail had lived longer
I had heard about Dun Dr. Ismail. Lee Kuan Yew had called him one of the finest people of Malay heritage that he had ever seen in his entire life. Would definitely want to learn a bit more about his legacy for sure though.
Excellent interview.
@@mohamadfadzilbasirahmad5549 Thank you for the kind wish! I hope to be able to do more of this type of content in the future - thank you for the support!
If he wanted to change the malay culture, he should not have given out handouts to make them less motivated .
We have not forgotten that his unequal education system, and entry to university he has built a group of uneducated malay politician that is not only corrupt but creating a race that is a leech to a society that has brought our education sytem down .
That’s not an unfair assessment.
Often, people won’t change unless they feel like they’re absolutely forced to do so, and will only do so under extenuating circumstances.
The issue however is that the other races, as Tun said, were already doing well on average while the Malays were lagging; the interim government seemed to have concluded that economic inequality was the main reason for that.
I am open to seeing if there is evidence that that is truly the case, or if that interpretation is actually factually incorrect and really the interpretation of May 13th as fruit of political incitement is correct.
Multiple things can be true at the same time though, which complicates the analysis.

@@SameerKhan-wg6kh That definitely aligns a lot with my wish for a better society and for a changed world. I think we can learn a lot from history and we should be learning a lot from history, while at the same time also understanding that things can hide a little more than they initially reveal, especially through the lens of media and through the different things that we read along the way.
I won't say that what I managed to discuss with Tun managed to elucidate every single part of it, but if it helped to somehow showcase a side that maybe you didn't have the chance to see, I would be deeply happy for having contributed towards that.
Thank you so much for watching once again and here's to charting your own journey forward and contributing in the ways that you feel are more suitable!
Many young people ask me. Is Mahathir a good leader? My answer to them he was a visionary leader but a poor executor. Most of his projects failed due to his self-centeredness.
Supposing that such youth exist, I would have to question if your advice is sound then, given the lack of justification and apparent lack of argument that I’m seeing here.

This is the Malay Macabre! Reformasi hidup rakyat ♥️
Look east.. Does he really practice equality in education as the Japanese?.. Politicians should stay out of education.Period.
Unfortunately decisions have to be made with regards to how our society should allocate resources, and to that end politics is required.
If, however, our culture of teaching and learning and institutions were perfect, and the body politic was fully equipped with everything it needed to accomplish our educational objectives in such a way that we did not need to appoint leaders in education and need not shape things such as national identity or awareness, then perhaps we might not need politicians.
This is not our current reality, however - and thus we need better leaders - not an absence of them.
Victor don't read his book waste of them and don't listen to him..
