Sarawak, Parliament, and A Baby Of The House: A Conversation With YB Datuk Larry Sng
Welcome back to Pathways to Excellence! In this episode, we sit down with YB Datuk Larry Sng, a third-generation politician and Member of Parliament for the Julau constituency in Sarawak. Larry brings a wealth of experience, having started his political journey at just 21, and shares fascinating insights on leadership, education, and development in one of Malaysia’s most challenging regions.
In this in-depth conversation, we explore Larry's early start in politics, shaped by a family legacy that spans generations. He talks about the unique experience of growing up in a politically active household, his education at some of the world’s top institutions, including the London School of Economics and Columbia Business School, and how these experiences helped shape his approach to leadership and decision-making.
We dive into the challenges and rewards of representing Julau, which was recognized as Malaysia’s poorest district when Larry first took office in 2018. He shares the progress made in improving infrastructure, internet connectivity, and basic amenities, as well as his efforts to support local education through initiatives like the Larry Sng Education Fund, which has helped over a thousand students.
Larry also provides a candid look at the realities of Malaysian politics, discussing how cultural dynamics, community needs, and economic disparities shape policymaking. We explore the role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and how his time abroad broadened his perspective on governance, preparing him to tackle the complex issues facing his rural constituency.
Join us for an engaging discussion that covers everything from Sarawak's development, Malaysia's future, and the potential of rural areas like Julau to become key contributors to the nation's growth. Don’t miss out on this inspiring episode that showcases the resilience and determination needed to drive meaningful change.

      @@Coco-m5t Thanks for the kind words. I've spoken English ever since I was a child. • @VictorTan
      @VictorTan 6 днів тому

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, it's kind of insane, honestly. I mean, sometimes you can win an argument, as in you stop a person from responding, and sometimes what happens is that they get persuaded, sure, but in many cases, all you really achieve is that you silence them, and they don't really change their minds. Of course, you could say that people do this sort of thing for the purpose of propaganda, or for spreading their ideology to their viewers, but that usually only contributes to polarization, and not actually to the enlightenment of the people that they are browbeating. As such, I'm inclined to think that such apologetics attempts are both disingenuous, and also, at the end of the day, ill-demonstrative of the values to which they should be adhering along the way, demonstrating them as hypocrites who shouldn't be anywhere near pulpits, and demonstrating why it is that they aren't the kinds of people who would be found anywhere near a pulpit, because the world sees them for what they are, liabilities, and not beneficial contributors towards the advancement of faith 😢

      He truly is - Thank you so much for the perspective! I don't know why people like this thrive, but I would guess that it has something to do with the fact that a lot of people out there are mentally vulnerable and cleave to populistic and plausible explanations like this that serve to confirm the beliefs of people while banking on extremism. It's pretty sad to see that, but having the awareness to see it for what it is helps us to call it out. Thanks for watching!

      Unfortunately decisions have to be made with regards to how our society should allocate resources, and to that end politics is required. If, however, our culture of teaching and learning and institutions were perfect, and the body politic was fully equipped with everything it needed to accomplish our educational objectives in such a way that we did not need to appoint leaders in education and need not shape things such as national identity or awareness, then perhaps we might not need politicians. This is not our current reality, however - and thus we need better leaders - not an absence of them.

    Kenapa dia tidak revolusikan sistem pendidikan masa dia jadi menteri pendidikan dan pm?

    • @VictorTan
      @VictorTan 23 дні тому

      Soalan bagus yang akan terima jawapan yang agak panjang. Walaupun ini bukannya jawapan yang penuh, mungkin apa yang saya boleh kata ialah bahawa kebolehan merevolusikan sistem pendidikan bukan sahaja sesuatu yang bergantung kepada apa yang dilakukan ataupun tidak dilakukan oleh Tun Doktor Mahathir. Pada pendapat saya, Tun Mahathir telah terhad dalam apa yang beliau boleh buat pada masa zaman Tun, dan hal ini juga demikian untuk mana2 pemerintah pada zaman ini dan juga pada masa depan, berdasarkan keupayaan dan budaya rakyat untuk bekerjasama, strategi kerajaan sebelum ini, masa yang sedia ada untuk pendidikan, dasar ekonomi negara, dan juga semangat nasionalisme. Oleh itu, walaupun kita tidak boleh berkata bahawa Tun Mahathir tidak sepatutnya boleh buat lebih baik dan walaupun kita boleh kritikkan apa yang beliau telah buat ataupun tidak buat pada masa zaman silam kebenarannya adalah bahawa revolusi pendidikan itu bergantung kepada banyak perkara yang juga tidak berada dalam kawalan Tun pada masa itu dan yang harus difikirkan baik-baik oleh setiap pemerintah pada masa akan datang di negara Malaysia. Mana-mana revolusi dalam sistem pendidikan tidak bergantung sahaja terhadap kajian ataupun hasil penyelidikan, kerana sistem pendidikan itu merupakan sesuatu yang sebenarnya bergantung pada semua bahagian ataupun sektor dalam negara, individu dan juga masyarakat. Saya akan bincangkan semua. Pada peringkat individu, kejayaan sistem pendidikan itu adalah berdasarkan keupayaan para guru di negara, dan keupayaan tersebut adalah sebuah fungsi pendidikan para guru dan juga sistem latihan dan perkembangan profesional yang sedia ada untuk guru-guru di Malaysia. Kedua-dua bahagian ini penting dari segi individu. Sekiranya para cikgu tidak mempunyai pendidikan yang secukupnya, maka mereka sememangnya tidak mampu memberi pendidikan yang bagus kepada rakyat lain kerana pengetahuan dasar mereka itu rendah, dan sekiranya tiada sistem yang wujud untuk menjadikan mereka guru yang berupaya dan administrasi negara dan kementerian pendidikan tidak mempunyai keupayaan untuk melatih cikgu dengan efektif. Maka, walaupun seseorang guru itu mempunyai pendidikan yang sangat bagus, cikgu tersebut tidak akan dapatkan keupayaan yang sepatutnya ataupun berfokus kepada konteks perguruan. Seterusnya, pendidikan itu juga bergantung kepada pelajar secara individu - Sekiranya seseorang pelajar itu mempunyai niat ataupun keinginan untuk belajar dan mempunyai pengaruh yang baik dan juga sifat yang akan membolehkan pelajar tersebut untuk mencaburi bidang pelbagai dan juga untuk mendapatkan pengetahuan dan juga sifat pemikiran yang boleh menyumbang kepada pemerolehan pengetahuan dan juga kematangan yang diperlukan untuk menjayakan sistem pendidikan sesebuah negara itu dan membolehkan pelajar tersebut bersaing pada peringkat antarabangsa, maka projek pendidikan itu akan berjaya dan pelajar tersebut mungkinnya juga tidak perlu bergantung kepada sistem pendidikan tersebut untuk menjadikan dirinya sesebuah kejayaan. Segi masyarakat juga amat penting dalam menetapkan apakah yang sesebuah kerajaan ataupun sistem pendidikan itu mampu menghasilkan dalam jangka masa pendidikan sesebuah anak muda yang mula kehidupannya di negara Malaysia dan sebagai seorang pelajar dalam jangka masa 11 tahun dalam mana mereka itu menuntut pelajaran dalam sistem pendidikan yang sedia ada di Malaysia sebagai peruntukan dan kewajipan untuk setiap rakyat Malaysia. Tetapi, kalau kita hanya fikir bahawa pendidikan itu bermula dan juga tamat di sekolah malah juga kehidupan semua rakyat, itulah istilah salah untuk berfikir tentang pendidikan di dalam negara. Tahap pendidikan dan juga keupayaan negara tidak bergantung hanya pada guru ataupun pelajar sahaja, malah juga kepada rakyat umum yang semuanya pernah menjadi pelajar dalam kehidupan mereka itu yang kesemuanya terlibat dalam sebuah sistem informasi - iaitu seluruh negara - dalam segala interaksi antara rakyat dan antara kaum, dan juga interaksi setiap rakyat Malaysia dengan sistem ataupun warga luaran dalam dunia teknologi - dunia baru dalam mana pengetahuan dan informasi serap dan sebar dari semua umat ataupun punca informasi di dunia ini kepada seluruh umat manusia. Dalam konteks yang lebih kecil, institusi keluarga juga amat penting - budaya sesebuah keluarga sungguh penting untuk mempengaruhi tabiat ataupun budaya yang dihasilkan dalam kehidupan anak-anak di keluarga dan juga pengaruh yang dihasilkan dalam media massa dan juga tempat-tempat lain, dan juga bergantung kepada kejayaan individu dan keinginan individu untuk menyumbang kepada negara yang lebihan juga bergantung kepada keinginan setiap rakyat untuk bergaul antara satu sama lain tanpa mengira bangsa ataupun agama. Akhirnya, hal ini dipengaruhi keupayaan rakyat secara dari segi ekonomi juga kerana hakikatnya, keupayaan seseorang itu untuk mendapatkan pengalaman tertentu misalnya melancong ataupun membuat aktiviti yang tertentu bergantung kepada keupayaan rakyat itu dari segi ekonomi. Dalam kes yang terbaik, setiap rakyat juga akan mempunyai keupayaan dan keinginan untuk mendidik rakyat lain dan juga untuk mengerahkan pengalaman mereka kepada generasi yang baru. Malangnya: 1 Keupayaan rakyat untuk menyebarkan pengetahuan itu bergantung kepada pendidikan yang telah mereka terima. 2 Keinginan rakyat terhad kerana kekurangan bergaul antara rakyat (seperti mana dibangkitkan dalam buku Dilema Melayu oleh Tun Mahathir bahawa keharmonian antara rakyat pada 1970an adalah kuantiti negatif yang hanya wujud kerana rakyat daripada kaum-kaum Malaysia kurang bergaul antara satu sama lain), budaya kekurangan aktivisme akibat feudalisme, dan juga, saya mengaku, dasar yang telah mengakibatkan rakyat terasa benci akibat berasa terpinggir, dan akibatnya meninggalkan negara, ataupun rakyat yang terpandai ditinggalkan atas alasan memperkasakan keseimbangan perkauman dari segi ekonomi 3 Sistem pemerintahan tidak berfokus dengan sepatutnya kepada perkembangan dan keupayaan rakyat yang memang mampu menghasilkan perubahan dalam negara Walaupun wujud juga banyak dasar yang bertujuan untuk memperkasakan kedudukan Melayu dalam ekonomi Malaysia dan walaupun dasar tersebut berniat baik, hakikatnya adalah bahawa dasar tersebut juga telah menyebabkan banyak rakyat Malaysia terasa terpinggir dan akibatnya berpindah kepada negara lain dan menjadi sebahagian daripada apa yang kita boleh gelar “brain drain”, maka kekurangan keupayaan ini telah menjadi lebih serius akibat situasi ini iaitu musibat yang telah dikenakan terhadap Malaysia walaupun niat itu adalah niat yang baik. Secara amnya, mana-mana dasar yang tidak mengutamakan tahap keupayaan yang paling kuat dalam sesebuah negara itu ataupun keadaan yang optimal supaya mereka yang mempunyai keupayaan tersebut boleh berjaya dan menikmati hasil kerja mereka itu dengan sepenuhnya bukan sahaja akan mengehadkan pertumbuhan negara tersebut bukannya hanya dari segi ekonomi dalam jangka masa singkat, tetapi juga akan mengakibatkan rakyat terasa perasaan tersinggung ataupun terpinggir dan akibatnya membuat keputusan untuk keluar kerana terasa bahawa mereka itu bukannya sebahagian daripada negara dan terus menjejaskan perkembangan negara secara am pada jangka masa panjang. Sebenarnya, Tun juga akur tentang hal ini - tetapi masalah inilah yang diistilahkannya sebagai ‘second Malay Dilemma’ yang malangnya masih tidak diselesaikan dalam negara Malaysia - dalam mana kita harus mengakibatkan semua rakyat bertanding dan mempunyai keinginan untuk bertanding pada tahap tertinggi tanpa mengira bangsa, tetapi terpaksa menghadapi cabaran daripada mereka yang masih tidak sudi untuk terima kemerosotan sesetengah faedah yang mereka anggap sebagai hak mengikut perlembagaan atas interpretasi yang kurang tepat dan juga bersifat politik.
