Thanks - be aware that any 360 camera has very fragile lenses - whatever you choose, choose a model that can use lens protectors and get them - especially for what you plan to use the camera for. The app is free - but I use a paid app called Lumafusion to make my videos once I've processed them through the Insta360 app.
I wish I could say I'm happy with my One R with 360 mod and 1 inch mod. Unfortunately its been a nightmare. I had two issues. 1/ Lens fogging inside the 360 lens and 2/ voice command not working. After a frustrating few weeks of dealing with the insta360 support and useless Aliexpress seller who had no interest in helping me at all, I've finally got the voice command sorted. Unfortunately I have to send the 360 module to Hong Kong at my expense for testing and repair/replacement. I'll be glad to finally get this matter resolved, but I now regret ever purchasing this camera. This fogging of the lens is very common and I'm one of hundreds, maybe thousands having this issue. I've invested too much money into this camera and accessories and sold off my GoPros to purchase it. I have to ride it out now and hope for a satisfactory resolution. I would strongly dissuade any one from purchasing this camera mainly because the poor service from support.
UPDATE : 23rd August. The replacement finally arrived and it doesn't fog. Unfortunately the voice command isn't working again. I think I'll just live with it for now. Dealing with support is a nightmare. I'm going to do a "really honest review of my experience dealing with Insta360 support" in a couple weeks.
@@LostTVinc it took a total of 7 weeks to get sorted and the replacement to finally arrive and I'm not having any issues at all now. Check out my channel. I uploaded a video testing the stability on my motorbike. I'm pretty happy with it now. I've even bought a second core to use with my 1 inch mod.
Hi there. I have enjoyed a Insta 360 ONE X for a year and I also got a Hero Gopro 8 black (I was a bit impulsive here!)...I wish I could combine them both in one camera ..the Insta 360 One R looks promising, but I'm confused as to how the modules work. The Twin edition is the 360 module correct? And the package also includes a regular 4k lens? But the 1inc module is a separate purchase. The pic quality of the twin edition -the 360 combo is not that much better than the One X and I see that the stitching on the R is not as clean as the stitching on the One X...and the 4K module for the R is not as good as the video from the Gopro 8 and so I think the 1inch module would be the best for the action camera part but I don't know if it is a lot better than what the Gopro Hero 8 can do in 4k...have you ever compared them? The Gopro 9 is a nice one but I thnk a combo 360/action camera is the future....Any advice? thanks for posting the video...
Hey again @Erick Perdomo The twin edition has both 360 and 4K modules included with the core module - the 'brains' of the camera. 1 camera module + the core unit slot into the battery base to make a complete camera, and you can swap out the camera mod. Agree that the One R video isn't a giant step up from the One X, and the One R stitching can be problematic, especially for objects closer to the camera. I haven't compared the 1-inch of the 4k to the Gopro 8 or 9 personally. Last GP I bought was the Hero 7 - which still suits my purposes. I'd be interested to try the GP9. I prefer the combo of 360 / action too, whatever that looks like for you. For the whole of last year, its been the One X + Insta360 Go + GP Hero 7 Black. And now I have the One R twin + 1 inch sensor. I'm getting to the point where I have to choose what I leave at home!

When I go away I usually carry a gopro 8 plus my One X plus a Sony RX100 IV...and my iphone 11 promax with a Osmo mobile 3!! too much! But lately is mostly my iphone 11promax and the insta one x! It would be awesome to bring just one 360/action camera that has the best functions/pic quality...I think I will pass on the gopro 9...I don't use my gopro 8 enough really...the 360 can be a lot of fun! If my One X breaks down (not on purpose...I hope!) then I may consider the One R...thanks so much for your videos!
Very fair review. I agree that all the upgrades Insta360 have been pumping out makes for the ONE R being a more desirable camera now that it was when it first appeared. However, it'll take another evolution of cameras to make me retire my ONE X.
(Shhhh - I love my One X too). But yes, the best feature of the One R at the moment is all the features they are pumping out for it. It's actually phenomenal!
A larger number of people have had issues with condensation inside the lens. Insta360 response to this was to tell people to buy additional protective housings so the warm lens will not hit the cooler outside air. This, to me, feels like quite a flaw when you don't have this problem with other 360 cameras, including the One X. What are your thought on this very odd issue and Insta60 response to it? (It is one of the main reasons I wouldn't buy a One R.)
Hi Joseph - you're totally right - a large number of people have had this issue. I haven't personally, but yes, maybe I should have included that as one of my negatives - true. I've never experienced with my One X either. I guess that when I've used my Fujifilm cameras at night for a long time eg astrophotography, sometimes I get issues with dew on the outside of the lens. And the recommendation is to use a fan to keep the air moving on the outside of the camera. I've never had issues inside the lens though with those lenses of camera, or any others. So, I guess Insta360 are making recommendations for certain conditions to get the best out the camera. And in that respect, they're trying to be helpful. But I wonder if this is a design flaw of the camera generally, or an issue that only affects a subset of cameras that have been produced. I guess I'll have to use my One R in more extreme conditions to test that out, or to reproduce the conditions people have been experiencing these issues with. Cheers for pointing this out! I'm sure other viewers and readers of these comments will find it helpful too.
@@TheTechPacker Thanks for the quick reply... I really enjoy your objective point of view. I bought I insta360 Go for some small drone shots and really like it. Sadly on one of my test flights the lens got damaged in the first week I had the camera. I reached out to Insta360 and the only thing they could offer me was to purchase a new camera (not the whole thing) so $100 USD. Lucky for me my visa card had insurance that did cover it so I got a new one. If I had done the same thing with a GoPro they have a replacement program to replace a $600 go pro for only $50 USD under the GoPro Plus program. The GoPro PLUS program is so amazing because they will let you even sign up for the program AFTER it gets damaged! Because it is an Action camera GoPro expects it may get damaged. Insta360 is selling them like they are action cameras but if you get any damage they only say buy a replacement. They need to do better in my opinion if they want us to use them like GoPros.
Thanks for your kind comments, Joseph. Yes, i do my best to be as objective as possible, and where I do have a preference, clearly state it, and why - so that people can make up their own minds. The GoPlus program does seem pretty amazing, though I've not used it. Last - and only - GoPro I have bought was a Hero 7 Black, and that was second hand. I'll be interested to see if there is a GoPro release this year, and how that stacks up to the 8 (and the 7). The 8 wasn't enough extra value for me to upgrade. Back to Insta360, I guess they're a company that's still growing, and doesn't have many bases around the globe perhaps to manage a program like GoPro. Will see if they mimic this in time - but at the moment, you're not the first person who has told me they'd rather stick with GoPro for this exact reason.
@@TheTechPacker This is going to sound crazy but I think they could have made the Insta 360 R a little bigger so they would have had more room to deal with the heat and thus not have a number of issues including condensation. I don't expect we will see much new until 2021 or maybe for both Insta360 and GoPro.

Here’s a downside I’ve never seen a reviewer mention (sadly). I bought the GPS remote with my Twin Pack so that I could mount the camera to my aircraft, operate it remotely, and add GPS data to my footage. In order to record in-cockpit audio, I decided to pair up my airpods. What I discovered is that their shoddy implementation of Bluetooth seems to be about twenty years old in terms of audio quality (which for recording from the inside of my ear-cups, I can tolerate) and that it will only allow one device connected at a time (which I cannot). If I’d known that I would not be able to connect the GPS remote and my airpods at the same time, I would not have purchased the remote (which was not cheap). On my first in-flight test, the camera froze and I had to wait until after I landed in order to disconnect the battery to reset it.
Fantastic video as always. I've been debating on whether to buy the One R or the Max. The one R and it's companion app look amazing. However, I keep reading about how many people are experiencing issues with the One R overheating and shutting down. Did you find this to be a problem since you began using the One R? I've seen where some people are actually using a heatsink on the body of the One R to help with the overheating. I've been using the original Insta360 One for too long. It traveled around the world with me and produced some wonderful and unique photos and videos. It was a wonderful camera for it's time but the time for upgrade has come. Hi Don - and thank you! I've had an issue a couple of times where it's got quite hot, but that was when I was testing with the One R Apple Watch app, and it was failing to turn the camera off - you can see that video on my channel. So, it might just have been a result of the camera being on and recording for quite a long time. But I have heard in can be an issue for some. I wonder if it depends on the speed that the sd card is capable of being written to? The One was out at the time I discovered the One X - shortly after it was released. I've never had one but I've heard goo0d things - and they almost never come up for sale second-hand in a small country like NZ. Not that I've seen anyway!

Hi Sarb, hopefully if you have a good contact at Insta360 you can convince them to simply produce a OneX 2.... I'd be much happier with that. Same as OneX but waterproof, Bluetooth audio, slightly higher resolution, and most of all PLEASE no rubbish GoPro mount! I love my OneX and don't think the OneR is an upgrade at all, the form factor is not what a 360 camera should be
great review and content but out of all the insta videos I've watched this one has the most instream adverts, I counted 14 which is overkill and ruins the flow of the viewer experience
I was looking to get a X but unfortunately today it is way more expensive than the R where I live. Also the R is way more future proof since the modular system allows new mods and capabilities to be released. I don’t think Insta 360 plans to develop a X2. Instead they should focus on developing new mods for the R. We already have 3 types of battery for the R with different purposes and the list keeps growing. On the other hand, If you buy a X today you will be locked in a dead device.
Hi Eduardo - yes, absolutely - the modular system is a pro if you look at it that way - which I tried to point out by saying that Insta360 have clearly marked out a bit of a roadmap, but we haven't heard anything more recently. And yes, the One X would be a 'dead-end' as you put it. And they are getting hard to find and expensive. Still, if I see one going cheap either new, or one I can view second-hand, I'll probably buy one....
i really love when one x can use all short lab templates on one r app. but now they block most of it. Now I know my one x while lovely are not and will not be supported in the future. kinda sad, one x has a better stitching and premium like.

i also have a problem with insta one r, i used it underwater. Then a week later, i just found that the touchscreen is broken. at first i don't think this caused by lack of waterproofing, but after reading these comments i think it is. The insta support help me to repair and send to hk, but more money i have to spend for this. hope it returns well and normal again. So my thought is gopro winning for underwater and better use the dive case for insta one r

Excellent review and I concur on most of the points. If you have time to do a "How to use the App on an iPad / iPhone" tutorial, I'd love to listen to your ideas and workflow. I use the X and R underwater a lot and the housing could also be improved to fix the stitchline problems as well, but it would probably make the housing a lot more expensive. Also, they have a housing for the Leica one-inch wide lens but a flat port. Had they designed the little housing with a 4" dome port, it would be much more effective.

I have the twin version and it seems to work fine. My biggest complaint is the quality of the outputted files. When exporting from my i phone 11 they are definitely not 5K. So far the best I've been able to out put is 720p. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I'm trying not to use the desktop app because the phone app is worlds better.
Hi there - the 5k specified is over the whole 360 sphere. If rendering out in 360, then your best results will; be in desktop to get higher quality for 360. Same for re=framed footage - using the app (which I do), you can expect to get rough equivalent of about 1080p for reframed footage. Unless you buy an 8k camera, that's the best you're going to get - and a 8k workflow wouldn't be nearly as simple as using the Insta360 app. Hope that helps!
@@TheTechPacker Thanks for the quick reply. I understand about the 5K resolution over a 360 degree viewing area but I was expecting similar quality as seen on Insta's UA-cam videos. I guess I could use the desk top app but it doesn't have half of the features of the phone app. I hope Insta resolves their issues quickly. I like the product but it's clear that it isn't fully thought through yet.
@irgccg Yes, I totally get you. It's kind of disappointing when you see your footage compared to the footage they use in ads - seems like a different camera. But I guess they'd be using the Premiere Pro plug in and also spending a fair amount of time of colour correction and grading too. And yes, the desktop app isn't appealing to me for exactly the reason you mention.
Great review! Thank you for that. However, I for one have upgraded from the one X to the one R for one simple reason: the display on the X is impossible to read in bright sunlight. Nasty surprises surfaced when I reviewed the footages after a bluebird day on the slopes. Not something I care to repeat. Trying to listen to the beeps in order to determine whether you are in the right mode did not inspire confidence. Just my 2 cents.
that issue with the 360 camera being too chunky might be a very big deal breaker. I mainly bought it for 360 especially since the InstaOne X isn't really available anymore. I wish I watched more reviews. I really like the idea of this. It can go far but the 360 camera part is a no-no. I don't even think I will open the box. Probably just send it back and wait for the Insta360 ONE X2 to come out in February
I wish they would consolidate all their apps into one. Such that it would know which device is currently connected to it and only display those editing options that are applicable. I hate having to have the one R, One X and Go apps to support my one X and Go cameras!
Agree - and I guess they are trying to manage the update cycles and also the specs needed to run each app. I'm guessing the grunt needed to run the One R app is much more than that needed to run the Go app. Integrating those all together might mean that it locks Go users out, because they are then actually making the app for high-end smartphone owners only. So, yes, I find it a hassle too, but I can see why they do it.

Have you noticed that stitching has gotten worse when using the One X with the One R app? I recently shot a bunch of footage with the X over a vacation and was really disappointed with the egregious stitching line. I inputed the same footage into the One X app and the stitch line disappeared. My theory is that they've updated the stitching algorithm to help One R users, but it means One X footage not looks pretty bad.
When I record with teh 4k mod in 1080p 120fps the video plays only in slow mo and no sound. Does anyone know if theres any way I can record in these settings but be able to play the video with sound and in regular motion?
Hope this doesn’t sound too harsh : tldr , buy/keep your X and use the R app ... if you think you need to.... :) imo the X is a classic , and will remain so for at least the next 3 years... or until you drop it , whichever comes first.
was quite happy with mine... until I went the first time a bit under water with it (in the cage, properly assembled) died on me after just 3 min and never woke up again

You missed the BIGGEST reason to maybe NOT buy the One R, too many units being shipped that have the fogging issue! Mine has it and so do a number of people I see on the Facebook community page! In my eyes Insta360 have basically admitted this is a potential common problem as they SUPPLY a sealable bag with silica sachets and instruction sheet in the camera box saying what to do if the lens fogs! BTW this did not work for me! I am working insta360 to get this resolved.
Hi Brits on Tour - yes, you're not the first to point that out. And it does seem to be an issue, you're right - though I haven't experienced it. I didn't get the bag with silica sheets in my box, so it must have been an early production version of the packaging. It's definitely an issue - I haven't experienced it - yet - but it might be because I haven't shot in conditions that would reproduce the problem. It does sound like a dealbreaker though. How are Insta360 responding to your attempts to get the issue resolved?
@@TheTechPacker Im filming in the UK, dry and low humidity now so should not be an issue. No rain here for a while so basically perfect shooting conditions. Insta360 have agreed I can either have a replacement or a refund, the choice is mine. I made it clear to them I would not accept a set of lens guards, which other people have been offered as I believe these degrade the image.
kind of a jack of all trades and not a master of one... thankful I haven't brought one... I'll grab a new gopro and an old OneX, I am still running a Hero5 black and a Samsung GearVR so it'll be a massive upgrade regardless.
My biggest problem with the OneR is its subpar picture quality. @ 2:23, you can see, the GoPro Max image is much sharper and the OneR image is much blurrier. I tried to use the OneR 360 for security recording while biking. However, even at the highest resolution of 5.7K and 30fps, the picture quality was so bad that it couldn't capture a license plate number clear enough to read. It's the same problem as the footage at 2:23 in this video. The 4K wide lens didn't do much better. My GoPro 8 at 2K setting can clearly capture a license plate number of a moving car. My other problem is Insta360 policy of "you buy it, you try it, you keep it, no refund". Obviously, the OneR failed as a 5.7K 360 or a 4K action cam, Insta360 wouldn't allow my return. So due your due diligence, then do another due diligence, parse through the hypes, pay attention to the reality, and make sure the OneR fits your objectives before you buy.
Good video, but I had to watch 5 commercials to get thru it. Getting to be too much to watch anything on youtube. Google has ruined another pruduct. $$$
If you are watching youtube videos often, then pay for a premium subscription and stop being cheap. The youtubers also get more money from premium subscription watchers, so you are supporting people posting videos on youtube.

It's true - you do need a phone with a powerful processor to use the app. You can also use the desktop studio on PC / Mac - but I prefer to use the app.
@@TheTechPackerwell in that case your brutally honest review is missing all the known cons in to this camera like overheating, slow response, buttons often deciding not to work, lense fogging, connection issues etc. Also for some reason you say that the "awesome" app is a lot better than any of the competition apps, when in fact it's super laggy, bloated and never works on Android. Sorry, sometimes it actually does - on a phone which is minimum the price range of this camera. And that there's hundreds of google store reviews supporting that. You also "forgot to mention" that insta360 literally forces you to use that crappy app as without it you can't even record a single second of footage and start the camera (of course it's just because they want to collect your data) and that for some reason it always asks for network connection. I think I don't need to continue. Maybe some of above are actual reasons why all pro action sports athletes and cameramen use insta360. Oh wait, they use GoPro 😉
@@SimpleSouls This video is almost a year and a half old. You've taken some time to respond to this and that's great. But I think I make it clear that this was one month after I got it, I don't use Android, and there have been multiple updates since, including being able to record native mp4 video. But, that's your view and that's just fine.
@@SimpleSouls i am a simple soul. i do not like the gopro 360 or their quik app. i feel the same way at sarb, all the insta360's are great. the one x2 is a really great camera with a nice tight workflow and app. their desktop app is great too. i've had all the issues you mentioned on the gopro.
the main problem is insta 360 file format insv. that file format cant edit on mac os Catalina. there is no easy way to do that. insta 360 studio is not supported to mac os Catalina. insta 360plugin also not support to premiere pro 2020. insta 360 studio does not support parallel windows 10 on the mac. and also there is no more mac os Mojave or high sira on the app store. in 2020 insta 360 camera buying totally bullshit...
The stitching isn't great at close range - it's got a wide body which doesn't help. The AI is getting better and better fro reframed video though - so if that's what you're doing, it's the best available option right now.
You're doing awesome reviews but shooting with a blurry background would greatly improve the look of your videos that would instantly appear more professional i think ;)
One thing I would add is that some units have an overheating issue which makes them freeze (hang), causing you to loose the footage that was being recorded at the time. The support you get from Insta360 is also precisely zilch. Talk about a deal breaker, an overpriced gimmicky gadget with a high probability of failure and a "you are on your own" attitude from the manufacturer. Do yourself a favour and pass on it.

GOOD ACTUAL water-proofing would be most welcome. I tend to take any water-proofing statements from Insta360 with a big pinch of salt. No idea when it might launch, but October / early November would be ideal for the holiday season / Christmas / Black Friday etc ...
The support can be slow at times and I think everyone has been hot with that with the coronavirus. But yes, you’re not the first person to say that. I think they try really hard.
For anyone considering this camera, read this before you buy! I'm really disappointed with my Insta360 One R. Out of frustration, I am returning for a refund! These are the issues I had: - most importantly, you cannot film more than 30 minutes at a time because the control module overheats and turns off! And apparently I'm not the only one with this problem, just search for "Insta360 one R heatsink mod". - Once you've taken your video (I bought mine purely for the 360 module) downloading the videos to the phone is SOOO SLOW!!! And if you do it too long... yes, the control module overheats and turns off, so if you were in the middle of a lengthy transfer, you first have to wait for it to cool down and then you have to start the download all over again. -I found editing the videos in the app is pretty annoying, picking a point to track was unreliable, unless you picked a person, that seemed to work quite well, but anything else, I'd have situations where it would suddenly stop tracking the selected point and turn to focus on my face??? - the stitching was not at all as good as in this video, there was a clear ripple where if I did a face-shot, I could literally end up without a nose or an eye. For scenery it isn't so obvious but it makes you have to think which direction you're pointing it, which one thing you shouldn't need to worry about. - Voice commands do work but... sometimes only. So yeah, so disappointed that the last batch of footage I made today, I couldn't even be bothered to download it, I started and just got angry at it and gave up, took the card out put everything back in the original packaging and sorted out the return. Frustrated, disappointed, and annoyed!!!

I wish I could say I'm happy with my One R with 360 mod and 1 inch mod. Unfortunately its been a nightmare. I had two issues. 1/ Lens fogging inside the 360 lens and 2/ voice command not working. After a frustrating few weeks of dealing with the insta360 support and useless Aliexpress seller who had no interest in helping me at all, I've finally got the voice command sorted. Unfortunately I have to send the 360 module to Hong Kong at my expense for testing and repair/replacement. I'll be glad to finally get this matter resolved, but I now regret ever purchasing this camera. This fogging of the lens is very common and I'm one of hundreds, maybe thousands having this issue. I've invested too much money into this camera and accessories and sold off my GoPros to purchase it. I have to ride it out now and hope for a satisfactory resolution. I would strongly dissuade any one from purchasing this camera mainly because the poor service from support.
UPDATE : 23rd August. The replacement finally arrived and it doesn't fog. Unfortunately the voice command isn't working again. I think I'll just live with it for now. Dealing with support is a nightmare. I'm going to do a "really honest review of my experience dealing with Insta360 support" in a couple weeks.

@@LostTVinc it took a total of 7 weeks to get sorted and the replacement to finally arrive and I'm not having any issues at all now. Check out my channel. I uploaded a video testing the stability on my motorbike. I'm pretty happy with it now. I've even bought a second core to use with my 1 inch mod.

I have enjoyed a Insta 360 ONE X for a year and I also got a Hero Gopro 8 black (I was a bit impulsive here!)...I wish I could combine them both in one camera ..the Insta 360 One R looks promising, but I'm confused as to how the modules work. The Twin edition is the 360 module correct? And the package also includes a regular 4k lens? But the 1inc module is a separate purchase. The pic quality of the twin edition -the 360 combo is not that much better than the One X and I see that the stitching on the R is not as clean as the stitching on the One X...and the 4K module for the R is not as good as the video from the Gopro 8 and so I think the 1inch module would be the best for the action camera part but I don't know if it is a lot better than what the Gopro Hero 8 can do in 4k...have you ever compared them? The Gopro 9 is a nice one but I thnk a combo 360/action camera is the future....Any advice? thanks for posting the video...
Hey again @Erick Perdomo The twin edition has both 360 and 4K modules included with the core module - the 'brains' of the camera. 1 camera module + the core unit slot into the battery base to make a complete camera, and you can swap out the camera mod. Agree that the One R video isn't a giant step up from the One X, and the One R stitching can be problematic, especially for objects closer to the camera. I haven't compared the 1-inch of the 4k to the Gopro 8 or 9 personally. Last GP I bought was the Hero 7 - which still suits my purposes. I'd be interested to try the GP9. I prefer the combo of 360 / action too, whatever that looks like for you. For the whole of last year, its been the One X + Insta360 Go + GP Hero 7 Black. And now I have the One R twin + 1 inch sensor. I'm getting to the point where I have to choose what I leave at home!

When I go away I usually carry a gopro 8 plus my One X plus a Sony RX100 IV...and my iphone 11 promax with a Osmo mobile 3!! too much! But lately is mostly my iphone 11promax and the insta one x! It would be awesome to bring just one 360/action camera that has the best functions/pic quality...I think I will pass on the gopro 9...I don't use my gopro 8 enough really...the 360 can be a lot of fun! If my One X breaks down (not on purpose...I hope!) then I may consider the One R...thanks so much for your videos!

Very fair review. I agree that all the upgrades Insta360 have been pumping out makes for the ONE R being a more desirable camera now that it was when it first appeared. However, it'll take another evolution of cameras to make me retire my ONE X.
(Shhhh - I love my One X too). But yes, the best feature of the One R at the moment is all the features they are pumping out for it. It's actually phenomenal!
A larger number of people have had issues with condensation inside the lens. Insta360 response to this was to tell people to buy additional protective housings so the warm lens will not hit the cooler outside air. This, to me, feels like quite a flaw when you don't have this problem with other 360 cameras, including the One X. What are your thought on this very odd issue and Insta60 response to it? (It is one of the main reasons I wouldn't buy a One R.)
Hi Joseph - you're totally right - a large number of people have had this issue. I haven't personally, but yes, maybe I should have included that as one of my negatives - true. I've never experienced with my One X either. I guess that when I've used my Fujifilm cameras at night for a long time eg astrophotography, sometimes I get issues with dew on the outside of the lens. And the recommendation is to use a fan to keep the air moving on the outside of the camera. I've never had issues inside the lens though with those lenses of camera, or any others. So, I guess Insta360 are making recommendations for certain conditions to get the best out the camera. And in that respect, they're trying to be helpful. But I wonder if this is a design flaw of the camera generally, or an issue that only affects a subset of cameras that have been produced. I guess I'll have to use my One R in more extreme conditions to test that out, or to reproduce the conditions people have been experiencing these issues with. Cheers for pointing this out! I'm sure other viewers and readers of these comments will find it helpful too.
@@TheTechPacker Thanks for the quick reply... I really enjoy your objective point of view. I bought I insta360 Go for some small drone shots and really like it. Sadly on one of my test flights the lens got damaged in the first week I had the camera. I reached out to Insta360 and the only thing they could offer me was to purchase a new camera (not the whole thing) so $100 USD. Lucky for me my visa card had insurance that did cover it so I got a new one. If I had done the same thing with a GoPro they have a replacement program to replace a $600 go pro for only $50 USD under the GoPro Plus program. The GoPro PLUS program is so amazing because they will let you even sign up for the program AFTER it gets damaged! Because it is an Action camera GoPro expects it may get damaged. Insta360 is selling them like they are action cameras but if you get any damage they only say buy a replacement. They need to do better in my opinion if they want us to use them like GoPros.
Thanks for your kind comments, Joseph. Yes, i do my best to be as objective as possible, and where I do have a preference, clearly state it, and why - so that people can make up their own minds. The GoPlus program does seem pretty amazing, though I've not used it. Last - and only - GoPro I have bought was a Hero 7 Black, and that was second hand. I'll be interested to see if there is a GoPro release this year, and how that stacks up to the 8 (and the 7). The 8 wasn't enough extra value for me to upgrade. Back to Insta360, I guess they're a company that's still growing, and doesn't have many bases around the globe perhaps to manage a program like GoPro. Will see if they mimic this in time - but at the moment, you're not the first person who has told me they'd rather stick with GoPro for this exact reason.
@@TheTechPacker This is going to sound crazy but I think they could have made the Insta 360 R a little bigger so they would have had more room to deal with the heat and thus not have a number of issues including condensation. I don't expect we will see much new until 2021 or maybe for both Insta360 and GoPro.

Here’s a downside I’ve never seen a reviewer mention (sadly).
I bought the GPS remote with my Twin Pack so that I could mount the camera to my aircraft, operate it remotely, and add GPS data to my footage.
In order to record in-cockpit audio, I decided to pair up my airpods.
What I discovered is that their shoddy implementation of Bluetooth seems to be about twenty years old in terms of audio quality (which for recording from the inside of my ear-cups, I can tolerate) and that it will only allow one device connected at a time (which I cannot). If I’d known that I would not be able to connect the GPS remote and my airpods at the same time, I would not have purchased the remote (which was not cheap).
On my first in-flight test, the camera froze and I had to wait until after I landed in order to disconnect the battery to reset it.
Fantastic video as always. I've been debating on whether to buy the One R or the Max. The one R and it's companion app look amazing. However, I keep reading about how many people are experiencing issues with the One R overheating and shutting down. Did you find this to be a problem since you began using the One R? I've seen where some people are actually using a heatsink on the body of the One R to help with the overheating. I've been using the original Insta360 One for too long. It traveled around the world with me and produced some wonderful and unique photos and videos. It was a wonderful camera for it's time but the time for upgrade has come. Keep up the great work and l look forward to your next video.

I've had an issue a couple of times where it's got quite hot, but that was when I was testing with the One R Apple Watch app, and it was failing to turn the camera off - you can see that video on my channel. So, it might just have been a result of the camera being on and recording for quite a long time. But I have heard in can be an issue for some. I wonder if it depends on the speed that the sd card is capable of being written to? The One was out at the time I discovered the One X - shortly after it was released. I've never had one but I've heard goo0d things - and they almost never come up for sale second-hand in a small country like NZ. Not that I've seen anyway!

Hi Sarb, hopefully if you have a good contact at Insta360 you can convince them to simply produce a OneX 2.... I'd be much happier with that. Same as OneX but waterproof, Bluetooth audio, slightly higher resolution, and most of all PLEASE no rubbish GoPro mount! I love my OneX and don't think the OneR is an upgrade at all, the form factor is not what a 360 camera should be
great review and content but out of all the insta videos I've watched this one has the most instream adverts, I counted 14 which is overkill and ruins the flow of the viewer experience

I was looking to get a X but unfortunately today it is way more expensive than the R where I live. Also the R is way more future proof since the modular system allows new mods and capabilities to be released. I don’t think Insta 360 plans to develop a X2. Instead they should focus on developing new mods for the R. We already have 3 types of battery for the R with different purposes and the list keeps growing. On the other hand, If you buy a X today you will be locked in a dead device.
Hi Eduardo - yes, absolutely - the modular system is a pro if you look at it that way - which I tried to point out by saying that Insta360 have clearly marked out a bit of a roadmap, but we haven't heard anything more recently. And yes, the One X would be a 'dead-end' as you put it. And they are getting hard to find and expensive. Still, if I see one going cheap either new, or one I can view second-hand, I'll probably buy one....
i really love when one x can use all short lab templates on one r app. but now they block most of it. Now I know my one x while lovely are not and will not be supported in the future. kinda sad, one x has a better stitching and premium like.

i also have a problem with insta one r, i used it underwater. Then a week later, i just found that the touchscreen is broken. at first i don't think this caused by lack of waterproofing, but after reading these comments i think it is. The insta support help me to repair and send to hk, but more money i have to spend for this. hope it returns well and normal again. So my thought is gopro winning for underwater and better use the dive case for insta one r

Excellent review and I concur on most of the points. If you have time to do a "How to use the App on an iPad / iPhone" tutorial, I'd love to listen to your ideas and workflow. I use the X and R underwater a lot and the housing could also be improved to fix the stitchline problems as well, but it would probably make the housing a lot more expensive. Also, they have a housing for the Leica one-inch wide lens but a flat port. Had they designed the little housing with a 4" dome port, it would be much more effective.

High I saw on one video the app kills the quality vs pc is this true ??
I have the twin version and it seems to work fine. My biggest complaint is the quality of the outputted files. When exporting from my i phone 11 they are definitely not 5K. So far the best I've been able to out put is 720p. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I'm trying not to use the desktop app because the phone app is worlds better.
Hi there - the 5k specified is over the whole 360 sphere. If rendering out in 360, then your best results will; be in desktop to get higher quality for 360. Same for re=framed footage - using the app (which I do), you can expect to get rough equivalent of about 1080p for reframed footage. Unless you buy an 8k camera, that's the best you're going to get - and a 8k workflow wouldn't be nearly as simple as using the Insta360 app. Hope that helps!

I guess I could use the desk top app but it doesn't have half of the features of the phone app. I hope Insta resolves their issues quickly. @irgccg Yes, I totally get you. It's kind of disappointing when you see your footage compared to the footage they use in ads - seems like a different camera. But I guess they'd be using the Premiere Pro plug in and also spending a fair amount of time of colour correction and grading too. And yes, the desktop app isn't appealing to me for exactly the reason you mention.
Great review! Thank you for that. However, I for one have upgraded from the one X to the one R for one simple reason: the display on the X is impossible to read in bright sunlight. Nasty surprises surfaced when I reviewed the footages after a bluebird day on the slopes. Not something I care to repeat. Trying to listen to the beeps in order to determine whether you are in the right mode did not inspire confidence. Just my 2 cents.

that issue with the 360 camera being too chunky might be a very big deal breaker. I mainly bought it for 360 especially since the InstaOne X isn't really available anymore. I wish I watched more reviews. I really like the idea of this. It can go far but the 360 camera part is a no-no. I don't even think I will open the box. I wish they would consolidate all their apps into one. Such that it would know which device is currently connected to it and only display those editing options that are applicable. I hate having to have the one R, One X and Go apps to support my one X and Go cameras!
Agree - and I guess they are trying to manage the update cycles and also the specs needed to run each app. I'm guessing the grunt needed to run the One R app is much more than that needed to run the Go app. Integrating those all together might mean that it locks Go users out, because they are then actually making the app for high-end smartphone owners only. So, yes, I find it a hassle too, but I can see why they do it.

Have you noticed that stitching has gotten worse when using the One X with the One R app? I recently shot a bunch of footage with the X over a vacation and was really disappointed with the egregious stitching line. I inputed the same footage into the One X app and the stitch line disappeared. My theory is that they've updated the stitching algorithm to help One R users, but it means One X footage not looks pretty bad.

When I record with teh 4k mod in 1080p 120fps the video plays only in slow mo and no sound. Does anyone know if theres any way I can record in these settings but be able to play the video with sound and in regular motion?
Hope this doesn’t sound too harsh : tldr , buy/keep your X and use the R app ... if you think you need to.... :) imo the X is a classic , and will remain so for at least the next 3 years... or until you drop it , whichever comes first.

You missed the BIGGEST reason to maybe NOT buy the One R, too many units being shipped that have the fogging issue! Mine has it and so do a number of people I see on the Facebook community page! In my eyes Insta360 have basically admitted this is a potential common problem as they SUPPLY a sealable bag with silica sachets and instruction sheet in the camera box saying what to do if the lens fogs! BTW this did not work for me! I am working insta360 to get this resolved.
Hi Brits on Tour - yes, you're not the first to point that out. And it does seem to be an issue, you're right - though I haven't experienced it. I didn't get the bag with silica sheets in my box, so it must have been an early production version of the packaging. It's definitely an issue - I haven't experienced it - yet - but it might be because I haven't shot in conditions that would reproduce the problem. It does sound like a dealbreaker though. How are Insta360 responding to your attempts to get the issue resolved?
@@TheTechPacker Im filming in the UK, dry and low humidity now so should not be an issue. No rain here for a while so basically perfect shooting conditions. Insta360 have agreed I can either have a replacement or a refund, the choice is mine. I made it clear to them I would not accept a set of lens guards, which other people have been offered as I believe these degrade the image.

My biggest problem with the OneR is its subpar picture quality. @ 2:23, you can see, the GoPro Max image is much sharper and the OneR image is much blurrier.
I tried to use the OneR 360 for security recording while biking. However, even at the highest resolution of 5.7K and 30fps, the picture quality was so bad that it couldn't capture a license plate number clear enough to read. It's the same problem as the footage at 2:23 in this video. The 4K wide lens didn't do much better. My GoPro 8 at 2K setting can clearly capture a license plate number of a moving car.
My other problem is Insta360 policy of "you buy it, you try it, you keep it, no refund". Obviously, the OneR failed as a 5.7K 360 or a 4K action cam, Insta360 wouldn't allow my return. So due your due diligence, then do another due diligence, parse through the hypes, pay attention to the reality, and make sure the OneR fits your objectives before you buy.
My 360 lens has a fogging problem everytime I use it outside, Such a waste of money...

It's true - you do need a phone with a powerful processor to use the app. You can also use the desktop studio on PC / Mac - but I prefer to use the app.

@@TheTechPackerwell in that case your brutally honest review is missing all the known cons in to this camera like overheating, slow response, buttons often deciding not to work, lense fogging, connection issues etc. Also for some reason you say that the "awesome" app is a lot better than any of the competition apps, when in fact it's super laggy, bloated and never works on Android. Sorry, sometimes it actually does - on a phone which is minimum the price range of this camera. And that there's hundreds of google store reviews supporting that.
You also "forgot to mention" that insta360 literally forces you to use that crappy app as without it you can't even record a single second of footage and start the camera (of course it's just because they want to collect your data) and that for some reason it always asks for network connection. I think I don't need to continue. Maybe some of above are actual reasons why all pro action sports athletes and cameramen use insta360. Oh wait, they use GoPro 😉

But I think I make it clear that this was one month after I got it, I don't use Android, and there have been multiple updates since, including being able to record native mp4 video. But, that's your view and that's just fine.
@@SimpleSouls i am a simple soul. i do not like the gopro 360 or their quik app. i feel the same way at sarb, all the insta360's are great. the one x2 is a really great camera with a nice tight workflow and app. their desktop app is great too. i've had all the issues you mentioned on the gopro.
the main problem is insta 360 file format insv. that file format cant edit on mac os Catalina. there is no easy way to do that. insta 360 studio is not supported to mac os Catalina. insta 360plugin also not support to premiere pro 2020. insta 360 studio does not support parallel windows 10 on the mac. and also there is no more mac os Mojave or high sira on the app store. in 2020 insta 360 camera buying totally bullshit...

The stitching isn't great at close range - it's got a wide body which doesn't help. The AI is getting better and better fro reframed video though - so if that's what you're doing, it's the best available option right now.
After buying a few camera now i know there is no a perfect camera unless probably if you hv unlimited amount of money

One thing I would add is that some units have an overheating issue which makes them freeze (hang), causing you to loose the footage that was being recorded at the time. The support you get from Insta360 is also precisely zilch. Talk about a deal breaker, an overpriced gimmicky gadget with a high probability of failure and a "you are on your own" attitude from the manufacturer. Do yourself a favour and pass on it.

GOOD ACTUAL water-proofing would be most welcome. I tend to take any water-proofing statements from Insta360 with a big pinch of salt. No idea when it might launch, but October / early November would be ideal for the holiday season / Christmas / Black Friday etc ...

The support can be slow at times and I think everyone has been hot with that with the coronavirus. But yes, you’re not the first person to say that. I think they try really hard.
For anyone considering this camera, read this before you buy!
I'm really disappointed with my Insta360 One R. Out of frustration, I am returning for a refund!
These are the issues I had:
- most importantly, you cannot film more than 30 minutes at a time because the control module overheats and turns off! And apparently I'm not the only one with this problem, just search for "Insta360 one R heatsink mod".
- Once you've taken your video (I bought mine purely for the 360 module) downloading the videos to the phone is SOOO SLOW!!! And if you do it too long... yes, the control module overheats and turns off, so if you were in the middle of a lengthy transfer, you first have to wait for it to cool down and then you have to start the download all over again.
-I found editing the videos in the app is pretty annoying, picking a point to track was unreliable, unless you picked a person, that seemed to work quite well, but anything else, I'd have situations where it would suddenly stop tracking the selected point and turn to focus on my face???
- the stitching was not at all as good as in this video, there was a clear ripple where if I did a face-shot, I could literally end up without a nose or an eye. For scenery it isn't so obvious but it makes you have to think which direction you're pointing it, which one thing you shouldn't need to worry about.
- Voice commands do work but... sometimes only.
So yeah, so disappointed that the last batch of footage I made today, I couldn't even be bothered to download it, I started and just got angry at it and gave up, took the card out put everything back in the original packaging and sorted out the return. Frustrated, disappointed, and annoyed!!!
