    If you ever tried to lift with a stiff neck you quickly find out how difficult it really is. Not only will your lifts suffer but you may wind up hurting yourself even more by attempting to do this. That said, imagine if you had a quick weapon in your arsenal that allowed you to quickly make the pain go away and restore the range of motion that you were lacking because of the stiffness. I’m going to show you exactly that in this video.
    If you have a tough time rotating or turning your head to the left or right, you likely have one of two scenarios that are contributing to this problem. The first is a tissue restriction (most often muscle) that is preventing your vertebrae from moving as they would like. The second is a stuck joint that is preventing the vertebrae from moving as they would like. As you can see, in either case, the cervical vertebrae are not moving as they should and this is causing you pain and discomfort while limiting your ability to lift.
    Time to fix that. We start by realizing that rotation of the head in one direction or the other has an opposite reaction when looking at the spine from the standpoint of the spinous processes that sit behind each vertebrae body. In other words, when you turn your head to the left, your spinous process on your vertebra are turning to the right. This is important to know since this forms the basis of your treatment.
    With a towel, you place it around your neck and grasp each end with a hand. The towel should be at the level of the discomfort that you feel in your neck when you currently turn your head. This can be felt with either the towel on the back of your neck with by palpating the neck for soreness as you move down one vertebrae at a time. With the towel in the right location you begin by pulling harder on the hand that is opposite the direction you want to turn your head.
    For example, if you wanted to turn your head to the left you would pull forward and with more force on the right hand. The left hand would be there to simply stabilize the towel. As you pull forward you then want to rotate your head to the left. You should find that both your range of motion will have been greatly improved and your pain should have subsided.
    Do this for about 10 reps and then rest. You can do it again a few more times if needed later in the day to reestablish the proper mechanics and allow your spasmed muscles to subside. Once your neck is back and moving free of discomfort you can resume your hard training and start making those gains again.
    Speaking of gains, if you are looking for a complete workout program that puts the science back in strength so you can make your best gains ever be sure to visit athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. Start taking your entire training approach seriously and start seeing the best results you ever thought possible in just the next 90 days.

    So. I sprained my neck 4 days ago and I honestly thought I broke it. The pain was the most terrible thing I've ever experienced after hives and breaking my finger. I sprained the back of my head while exercising, I made a fast wrong move with my neck and it made a slight crisp sound. The pain came after 35 seconds and didn't stop for two days. I couldn't move my head at all, and it started hurting more bc of it. The constant pain made my head ache and slowly spread to my back. I legit thought it was broken, and even considered going to a doctor, but the hospital nearby was closed. So we called our doctor and explained the situation. So here's some advice:
    1. Check if there's any swelling or change in the color of the skin (red/blue or something similar). If so, then contact a doctor immediately.
    2. If there are no symptoms of swelling or such, but hurts uncontrollably then don't move around too much with your head or hand coz it might worsen the damaged torn tissue. If the pain doesn't stop take a pain relief pill and rest. Don't do any "fixing" exercises. Leave it be for 3 days.
    3. Compress the area with an ice pack wrapped in a towel. Do not apply ointments or warm massages, it will trigger the pain more.
    4. Don't wrap your neck with hot scarves or such. You might get cold after sweating. Just make sure you don't move around too much and make the neck area won't get cold or hot.
    5. Don't panic :) Just give it a few days and the good, old days of moving your neck freely will surely come back)

    Working behind the desk, I had upper cross syndrome, lack of neck curvature and extremely tight upper trap muscles for years despite being a gym rat. A good TPT massage therapist helped me a lot with the muscle tightness while conventional massages failed to change anything significantly long-term. After visiting a chiropractor and an athletic therapist, analyzing tons of videos, this is what helped me tackle my neck problems the most:
    -sleeping on the back using a rolled towel instead of a pillow to properly rest and maintain neck curvature,
    -doing chin-tucks and using rubber-bands sparingly for training neck muscles, including neck self-traction exercise also with a rubber band (can be particularly helpful with pinched nerve after a 'bad night');
    -training rhomboids and rotator cuff muscles for a better posture.
    -Currently trying to alternate between sitting and standing desk ~50/50.
    Big fight with anterior and lateral pelvic tilt is yet to come. Thank you Jeff for invaluable insights and inspiration!

The first couple of days my neck felt very sore but by the end of the week doing this every day I experienced vast improvement. During this time I also refrained from doing Kettlebells and Hang Power Cleans for 10 days! I coupled this towel technique with content in your other videos that showed " contraction before extension" when rehabbing a muscle that is injured.

    Jeff , I really appreciate all your videos. You have some great insights and I use the towel stretch a lot with my patients as I am also a physical therapist. I am a certified Mulligan Practitioner and find this stretch works even better if the patient crosses their hands on the towel so if pulling to the left the left hand is pulling, cinches up on the towel on the side pulling, and make sure the towel is not wadded up at all so it grabs the vertebra even more. Hope that helps someone even more. I really like your visual aids such as the skeleton.

    • @maximilianojavierrodriguez4008
      @maximilianojavierrodriguez4008 7 років тому +7

      Trigger points are areas on your muscles that generate pain in other zones. For example you can feel a kind of headache but it's actually pain generated from trapezius... Once you find that point and massage it the pain disappeares or reduces.

    • @Zgmflegend
