This is a long one, y'all. Its really three reactions in one. Hope you enjoy! And there will be even more Home Free tomorrow, as I have 4 timely reactions ready on time for the 4th of July. Just because I'm north of the border, doesn't mean I can't celebrate!
The girl singer was only w/Voiceplay for this show, but they didn't need to add her (tho she was good). Home Free sounded amazing + tho they now have 1+ Mill. subs, they deserve more. Incredible, live!!⤵ . ▶Did u react to LIVE surprise⤵⤵ *"9 To 5-Beatboxing Breakdown"🔥*
Hry Dan, i just wanted to let you know Homefree has a new song out. It has a audio but no video that I can find. It has a powerful positive message that is perfect for the 4th. And nobody is reacting to it. It's called Undivided. Please check it out. Thank you and Have a happy 4th!
The producers told the guys that they wanted to feature Austin or Tim as lead singers because they had the best tv presence , so when they performed Colder Weather with Rob singing lead the producers said ok but it could cost them the victory , but the guys said we are doing this our way
The Sing Off was in 2013 and they had a lot of great competition. And now in 2021 they have perfected their craft. Plus after Adam Chance joined their "sound" with the added bass and Chances range....to me has become exceptionally rich. As much as people gush over Austin...which I love... songs that feature Tim and Adam have been some of my favorite. And don't get me started on Rob....kind of under rated in my mind. And with Adam their vocal percussionist.... they are just smooth.
Austin had just been singing with them about a year before the Sing-Off and I think they were still learning that cohesiveness since they had many switches in members of the group from the past. Eliott only sang with them a year before he left and Tim came in, just a lot of changes. I also believe The judges and also producers had their preferences in how things were done and yes many rules. Austin led off in most of the performances (except 1) but I feel it was Home Free's sort of strategy on the Sing-Off because they knew that the judges clearly stated that they loved Austin's voice and they also loved Tim's deep bass, so they put them out there and did what the judges liked. I mean it's a competition, you want to please the judges. Home Free just did everything right on that show. It pleased everyone. And they won.
There were limits on the length of the song in the Sing Off and they only had a week (or less) to arrange the song and get it performances-ready. Also, the producers had decided it was the Austin and Tim show as far as HF was concerned. When the guys decided Rob should lead on "Colder Weather", the producers threw a fit, even told them they could lose the competition if they went with Rob, but HF stuck to their guns. Rob was supposed to be the comic sidekick, with the very pretty Austin and handsome Tim as the leads. You'll notice until "Colder Weather" the judges never comment on Rob's singing. And Chris gets left out completely.
I respect the guys so much for sticking up for having Rob lead. As usual, their integrity wins out. Their musical instincts are always spot on. I totally could see where Jewel had a crush on Tim right from the beginning. I don't remember them commenting on Chris at all and Rob only the once.
I don’t really have a favorite, they are all phenomenal, but there’s something about Rob’s voice that always captures me. I especially love Rob and Chance together. First time I caught that was on “I Can’t Outrun You”, then “Helplessly Hoping”.
I liked your comparison of the two versions of “Life Is a Highway”. I love their sing-off songs, but they have grown and matured a lot since then! Although I love Chris’s voice and his solo career, I could rarely pick out his voice and contribution to the group, (probably showing a lack in me instead of him). But Chance has become a great addition and improved the group as a whole!
Having grown up on Tom Cochrane's original (Canadian born, here), the shortened version they did on the show was more a showcase for Austin and Tim's vocals than anything. The video version, with Chance, is much better, albeit I think they took the influence more from Rascal Flatts than Tom. Still, Home Free doesn't really "cover", they reinvent.
Isn't it amazing how much a group who continues to work improves over the years. Listening to your review of their Sing Off version makes it sound like you don't realize that they were years younger at that point. And, yes, I'm sure the people behind Sing Off had thumbs on the groups. Edited to add that you did come around at the end, admitting to the fact that experience and self determination resulted in a better version of the song.
Continuing to work, and having determination don't always mean that you improve. Sometimes people just hit a wall. And actually, sometimes it is hard to keep in mind when songs were recorded, since I've listened and reacted to close to 30 of their songs, spanning years of progress, and I've been going back and forth in time.
They were. There are interviews with Tim Foust and Austin Brown (on "The Charismatic Voice") and another I saw with Chris Rupp. They were indeed put into a niche by the producers. Tim Foust said in his interview that he'd worked for some time writing pop songs (for a man he didn't name) and then his employer came to him and said he wanted him to write country songs. He went home, drank a bottle of whiskey and wrote the worst country song he could imagine ("Champagne Taste on a beer budget"). Many years later when he made the video with Home Free it became one of their most popular. Tim said the moral is that when the universe is telling you something, don't get in your own way.
They always had the best audience response...all season. I agree with you this was maybe their worst song on the Sing-Off. However the video is awesome. If you notice, the video has Chance, not Chris....that to me is a good part of the reason the video is better
Filharmonic was my second favorite on the show (naturally Home Free was my 1st). They paired up with Home Free to perform to preform "I'm Alright" from Caddyshack and I highly recommend watching. Filharmonic went on to be James Cordon's "back up " singers many times when he sang with his guests on his show.
On the Sing Off the producers wanted to only highlight one or 2 people in each group with HF they couldn't deny that they were all amazing and when it came to Colder Weather they did not want to highlight Rob but the guys fought them on it and it was amazing
The guys looked so young on the Sing Off! And a big difference is the change of Chris vs Chance plus a lot more experience in performance. Of course the last video being a studio version doesn't hurt either. This was a great reaction! Thank you! ❤
It's always so much fun to go back and watch this. It shows you just how far they've come from then until now. What a major difference. Not that they weren't really good back then, because they wouldn't have won if they weren't. But now they become so polished, and their harmonies are tighter, and they are more comfortable on stage, too. Thanks, Dan! Loved this reaction.
I love the opening numbers in this show. My favorite though is the first opening number during this season of the Sing-Off. It always amazes me just how clearly you can hear Tim over all the other voices.
One of the things that I love is that the one choreographer from the show actually still works with them to this day to help with their choreography. She shows up in some of their behind the scenes videos. Though I don’t remember any of the titles of those videos.
I always enjoy your reactions to the songs HF does. I agree with you and all those below about really all they had to do in a short time to set each song according to what production wanted. The guys doing life is a highway on tour was so good with Rob taking a big part. I really like all of the HF guys singing talent. As far as Chris, he was good also while with the band, just didn't get the limelight as much. But they all sat together and decided as one what went where. Chris seems just as happy with what he is doing now. It is like some of the songs Tim writes or co writes, he takes the background. I just like how well they work together. Thanks again for the great reactions.
This was such a treat getting a 3- for-1! This and Pretty Woman were my bottom 2 in the Sing-Off... 100% agree with what you had to say. Great reaction!
Yay! I love the group performances from this show! Like the most incredible choir ever! I think part of the problem was they had to set the tempo too fast because they only had a very small amount of time to sing the song on the show. So it was rushed and everything went so fast you couldn’t really hear and appreciate what they were doing. Plus the addition of Chance really filled out their sound!
Thoroughly enjoyed the concept you used in this reaction. Yes, Home Free has changed once released from constraints of producers in the past. Take care. Looking forward to your next reactions.
Thank you so much Susan. These types of shows always typically restrain contestants, so it wasn't super shocking to me to find out that it was indeed the case.
@@DanFromHali Tim had a 30 minute interview with a reactor and mentioned the contract they won from the Sing Off....and not fondly. They have progressed to have much more control and their own label now.
You have to remember, sing off was back in 2013, you can’t say that you have heard better from them. This was 8 years ago so of course anything Home Free sings now will be better. I think you should watch all of their sing off performances
I am watching them all in order. And i totally can. If i read all of an authors books, and they grew and matured over time, i can totally say that Ive read better than one of their earlier books. That is a very fair assessment.
I watched seasons 2-4 on the sing off. Because of the judges comments I actually wasn’t really a fan of home free at the time. So how did I became a home fry? Everything changed in 2020 when I watched musical commentary breakdowns by a HF member the judges hardly mentioned on air: Chris Rupp.
Yes I think you are dead on. I've read several times and you can take it for what it's worth that yes the producers wanted things done a certain way. They wanted Tim or Austin as the front men.
Well I have had some friends that have been on similar shows. And they've told me that a lot of the behind the scenes stuff with what producers want from contestants is a bit much, and that they have very little control over what they do if they want to succeed. There's also a lot of image control, where producers will try their best to make sure winners have that "Star" appeal to them as well, and purposely make others look bad, by vetoing certain song choices, and forcing them into uncomfortable situations relating to their performance. A lot of these shows are more scripted than you would think.
I prefer the trade off in lead. I think the Sing-off had them stick to one lead per song. They all have a certain point in each song to shine. Thanks for your reaction
The choreographer who helped them with their moves was Kristen Denehy. She has been their choreaographer ever since, especially the "Blue Ain't Your Color" video.
Oh neat. Only reason I know her is because she was the choreographer for anything that needed choreography on How I Met Your Mother from 2005 - 2010, before being replaced by Zach Woodlee
Seemed like the expectation from the Sing-Off was to identify a ‘lead’. That doesn’t really ‘fit’ the HF model I think we’re all used to. The solo goes to the singer that has the best ‘fit’….Spread the wealth … no ego in the ensemble. PLUS I don’t really think the TV audio for the show was entirely adequate. They certainly have grown and developed since then…..and survived through a pandemic.
I rather enjoyed the triple reaction, especially when it's Home Free! I kinda agree with you about the performance/arrangement on the Sing Off version. I think it's completely fair to compare the versions - all sorts of reasons why the official video ought to be better, time passed, studio as opposed to live and time to work on the arrangement.
