Jerry I am a semi driver and run on the west coast mostly Utah to Washington state. I am also a commercial drivers license instructor so, if you don't mind just a couple of tips for snowy slick conditions here are some for the next time you are in that situation. I am not trying not to sound like you don't know how to drive or that things don't happen unexpectedly either. Just giving some advice after driving semi's for 22 years. First is that yes speed was a factor, but you know that. Second, thing I saw immediately was you were doing something us semi drivers call stab braking. It is a great technique when done properly however, you were on and off the brakes so quickly that it was ineffective and had it been done properly you most likely could have slowed down. This is how it should be done. Always remember the 5 / 10 rule unless in colder conditions and slick roads then it's a 5 / 5 rule. Apply brakes enough to slow you down but not lock up your brakes for 5 seconds and then get off the brakes for 10 seconds in order to cool your brakes before applying brakes for 5 more seconds and repeat till you are at the speed you want to be at. I think you can figure out the 5 / 5 rule from that information. That also works for going down long hills. Third looked like you had started turning for the curve and then hit the brakes. On slick roads with a heavy trailer that is a huge mistake. Remember an object in motion tends to stay in motion and trailer brakes ( if your trailer had them ) will generally not apply as much as your vehicle brakes will so your trailer still wants to keep going towards the outside of the corner. I am sorry if this sounds like I'm saying don't know how to drive that truly is not what I'm saying just giving some tricks of the trade from my profession. Also glad your are ok that road can be deadly in the winter time, I see it every winter. On a side note if you ever get a chance go hike the Lee's pass trail in kolob Canyon in utah one of my favorite hiking/camping spots. just be aware coming back out of the Canyon is a pain in the legs 1000 foot climb in the last 1 mile of the trail.

This is great advice, I'm a CDL driver and also drive a motorhome regularly and a fifth wheel RV as well and I was just in Utah a few weeks ago during a snowstorm maybe the same one. In addition to what was mentioned about braking techniques, is to use engine/exhaust braking as much as possible and gearing to your advantage. may I ask what gear you were in and does the the Ford have an exhaust brake? Does the Ford tranny automatically downshift and keep it in higher RPMs when you are hitting the brakes? Or do you have to select a lower gear yourself like on the older automatic transmissions? Also what kind of tires are on the truck and trailer? Are they both rated for snow and ice? Glad you're okay

@@JerryHaecker So would it be okay to use the trailer brakes as you go around the corner even if you don't use the truck brakes or no brakes at all?

I'm way slower in my 23' sprinter without a trailer. I agree with all the other pro drivers here, and no use adding another comment such as ''slow down' as you've long ago learned from this. bSo very thankful you are alive and still here with entire family + dog. Thank god for this gift. 💖
It looked to me like the road had an icy patch at that point. Not much you can do with iced roads. You just skid and slide around. Yes, you could have gone slower, but 33 mph is not fast. There was no way to tell if snowstorm was going to be bad or light.
Very sad to see your truck and trailer so damaged. What a job to clear it all out! I hope you all managed to find some peace after that adrenaline jolt, sadness, fear, guilt, and nerve wracking exhaustion. Accidents take their toll emotionally.
    On the bright side:
Your hitch and tow system held up well, your truck did not flip over, the trailer also did not flip over, the semi did not hit you, you did not go over the embankments, you are all alive and not injured, there was no fire or explosion, and you did not hit another vehicle. Do you realize how many things went RIGHT that day? I think you are a good driver to have kept control of the vehicle despite a very serious crash. Well done.
Take care of yourselves and get some rest. 💕

Jerry and Family, I WAS THERE that day on Route 20; I was heading east in that storm and passed your wrecked truck & RV. It must have been very shortly after the accident happened. I just found/viewed your "crash" video this eve & am thrilled you posted it, along with this follow-up video. I subscribed & will follow your journey to recovery! THANK you for posting these two videos, you have answered questions & concerns I have had for your family since passing your vehicles that day! I left North Idaho 3 days prior (Oct 22nd) headed to FL, (with a stop in Surprise, AZ) to see my family. I was in a Class C RV, traveling solo with my 2 cats, with the cold front right on my tail as I headed south across the U.S. I came down I-15 then took the 20 east to get over to 89 south. I have an older motorhome so it was already stressful not only traveling by myself, but hitting the bad weather in UT that day. I didn't realize 20 was like a Pass, ascending then descending, and was in the snow immediately. My heart sunk when I saw your wrecked truck and trailer. For 2 1/2 months I've wondered, "Who was in the truck, did they have any pets, was anyone hurt?" My bp is up right now, recounting your situation. I will share your crash video with my family, as I was trying to describe the accident scene to them. I could tell you lost control descending & can imagine you must've nearly had a heart attack (or crapped yourself!). Your son was likely buckled in but I hope your pup is ok? You're learning the hard way but have the humility to share your experience so we can all learn from it, too...again, Thank You. You are all safe....AMEN. Carrie in N. Idaho

So thankful everyone was ok. The one thing that jump out of your update at me was " I put the truck in 4 wheel high". I am not familiar with Ford trucks, but on my 3500HD Silverado, when I put it in 4 wheel high it locks the rear differential and becomes possi traction. With the snow on the ground, mine would have lost traction and slid off on the curve even without ice.

Thanks so much for the update. I know all these comments are from people who were not there and did not see the weather unfold before your very eyes. One response was “that’s what we pay insurance for” all that said it’s still a pain. Remember, insurance is a business therefore they watch their bottom line. Document who and the topic when speaking to the insurance company. And keep receipts of your outlay since the event. Important thing is everyone is ok however we also need to remember we all have a budget. This is a business transaction, get what is coming to you.
While walking around the camper you made a comment that made me think, “the cap came loose and the floor in the bedroom is buckled”. To do that the RV frame would have to be bent(in my opinion) this would also explain the damage to the truck bed/cab. I also agree with another persons comment pertaining to the truck frame being checked. This will be important for the truck moving forward.
In the end, you appear unharmed which is a positive. The rest of the puzzle pieces will fall into places after much discussion with your bride.
You are clearly enjoying life’s journey. This is a minor detour. Be well, take care of your wife then children and you will make the right choices.

    Sorry about the mishap there.
Yes - these storms kick up out of nowhere fast.
Now - as a retired truck/contractor these types of storms are the worst.
    A. Roads are likely well above freezing when storm started.
    B. Packed slush is the trickiest.
    C. Curves give lotsa opportunities to have trailers push you sideways, breaking traction.
As far as speed goes - yeah, you were a bit fast. My rule of thumb is If I have to use brakes on a long downhill then I'm going too fast. Now, I don't know if you have an engine brake or not - but that is my sole device to keep my speed down. If I'm using service brakes - than I'm going too fast. Time to downshift. Service brakes (in my opinion) should only be used to stop you on the hill. If I have to constantly apply them to maintain speed then I'm going too fast. I will however (when it's raining or snowing) apply them from time to time to keep drums and/or rotors dry. That way they'll be there for me should there be stopped traffic on the hill. Again, I don't know details of your setup - that's just my method.

Thanks so much for sharing. Praise God that it wasn't much worse than it was! You are helping others possibly prevent a similar (or worse) accident in sharing this and what the lessons learned were. I would add a couple more (not to criticize but to maybe help):
~You are correct... 33 mph in that situation was way too fast. More like 10-15 using compression braking and maybe 2nd gear. With flashers on both your truck and the Jeep following to warn others behind you.
~ On my dually (Ram 3500) I have some pretty serious all terrain tires which will give much better traction in snow (won't help on ice of course). I give up a little with the aggressive tread in normal conditions to gain the better traction when needed.
~ As someone else mentioned...SLIGHTLY engaging just the trailer brakes (not enough to lock the tires of course) can sometimes help avoid disaster.
~ Sometimes you just can't avoid sudden weather changes as you have rightly observed. And waiting it out isn't always a good option.
I learned a long time ago...better to go slower than needed than to go faster than is safe!

I've been going to Phoenix in November every year for over ten years and luckily I've only had that happen once. I pull a 36' travel trailer and those things can sure have a mind of their own. I'm glad you guys are OK. I've had to leave to beat a storm on more than one occasion. Sometimes nature decides to change it's schedule and there's not much to do but deal. I had a very similar situation last week going thru Tennessee to Alabama. I made the mistake of allowing the GPS to plan my route for me and it took us over a mountain pass. The roads went from wide highway, sunny and 49 degrees to a steep one lane windy mountain road with snow on the ground and temperatures ranging from 39 to 34 degrees. At first we were enamored by the beauty, but as I watched the sun and the temp continue to drop I got concerned. There were no shoulders to pull off. We were fortunate that we had daylight as a few more degrees cooler and we might have ended up in a very similar dire situation. I'm glad no one got hurt.

Ok I live in Maine, deal with snow all the time. When you put your truck in 4 wheel high, all you effectively did was lock front and rear axles together preventing then from acting individually. It's a common misconception that 4 wheel drive adds traction. Only for pulling power, otherwise it probably played a big part in your crash. Locking one wheel (abs or not) on one axle causes the same condition on the other axle. So instead of losing traction on on just one wheel allowing the others to roll at normal speed and maintain traction, you end up losing traction on multiple wheels. Also 4 wheel drive causes problems with stability control preventing the system from acting on just the desired wheel, this breaking force gets transferred to the other axle as well. Moral here is DON'T USE 4 WHEEL DRIVE UNTIL YOU CAN'T GET TRACTION GOING FORWARD! It causes people to crash. (All wheel drive vehicles do not lock front and rear axles together so not the same thing before anybody says that) I'm glad everyone is ok, keep up the videos and keep your head up.

Heartbreaking! So glad you're all safe, that's the most important thing. It's easier to analyze and evaluate the situation when we're looking back on it, than when we're in the present moment! Last August when we were travelling near Saguenay Quebec (we are from Ontario Canada) we encountered great trouble when our 2020 Grand Design Reflection 337rls wheels on the passenger side (the camp side) suddenly came off as we were travelling down the highway. OMG, I kid you not! Yes we have a good TPMS and yes my husband checks to torque and tire wear and integrity on all tires prior to any travel and yes tires were new and no we are not speed demons on the highway or anytime. We could only find one of the two wheels, it rolled away at least a half mile, and this tire had a puncture into the rubber of the tire. We did not notice that we ran over anything on the highway that would puncture the tire but that's the only answer because suddenly both the passenger side tires blew out and came completely off both hubs. We were able to get pulled over and off the road safely and discovered that all the lug nuts were sheared off. Miraculously no-one got injured or killed. CAA was wonderful and provided immediate towing service, we were towed to a local trucking repair where they stored our fifth wheel securely indoors. This happened on a Saturday morning of a long weekend and the following Monday we were fixed up enough to be back on the road. We were very shaken by this experience but it could have been worse. We travel with my sister and brother in law which was helpful in our situation. Praises to you and thank you for sharing your situation with everyone, I am looking forward to watching more video's. Even if its a short distance in the snow and ice, chain up!

Except fifth wheels don't really have chains. They have some small security wires. Sometimes just one. I've seen some without any at all.

When you're sliding, don't hit the brakes you only make it worse. You have all wheel driver, so use it. Accelerate gently and the puller will have enough traction to pull the trailer back in line. I always though that driving schools should focus on teaching you this kind of stuff instead of parking and going backwards....

Just now seeing this video (and the crash video in March) thank goodness, you and your family are all ok through the wreck, and so right.... it could have been SO much worse, especially with the semi coming up on you!!! Yikes. But you've got a great attitude.... it happened, now move forward, and just find the positives! You can analyze the situation and find the what ifs... and what you maybe should have or could have done different.... but move on. You did very well, keeping as much control as you could. Greetings from Northern Minnesota.

Dealership tires heavy on the breaks in the mountains.forstarters a big RV like that and you have stock tires should have a a/t or all weather. B you would have used the engine break and the Manuel gears and layed off the break peddle. And that big of a trailer should have had a bigger truck or a counter weight on the steering axle with a good all weather tire. And C the trailer break should have been adjusted to the terrain and weather conditions and Evan use the slide on the trailer break to slow the truck down safer

In snow gearing down slightly helps along with breaking. Be ready to shift up if you start sliding.

Glad yinz are ok! I also have a 5th wheel and found out how fast that trailer can push you, when it’s slippery out. I have learned to turn off tow mode and the exhaust brake when it’s slick out. I was going down a hill with a bend and the road was wet and of course the truck grade shifted to 2nd and the exhaust brake went balls to the wall right as I started into the bend. Nothing broke or hurt but scared the you know what out of us! Take cars

33mph? Maybe, maybe not too fast. Don't beat yourself up over speed, you recognized the changing conditions, you're not a reckless driver. You're tires are what need to be addressed. Plus, you don't pump your brakes, you need to give your ABS a chance to work and your tires probably didn't help with ABS. Squeeze braking could have helped but you were in that slide. That's why much has to do with your tires. Anything other than a winter tire is going to harden as Temps decrease. Glad you're ok and didn't roll from what I saw, that was amazing.

You got lucky to get out with no injuries thank God. All the arm chair quarterbacks telling you were going too fast. I have seen plenty of RVs going way too fast for conditions I am sure some of the commentators are some of those RV'ers. Good luck with your insurance hope it all works out.

Seems like the truck won't be too bad to repair as long as the frame is still true. The trailer on the other hand looks like the frame is bent which is causing the floor to buckle inside. Could have been much worse.

Thanks for the follow up. I'm looking forward to the next one.
You never know when this kind of weather will get you. I'm considering keeping tire chains onboard but they are heavy. But not just for the rear drive wheels, but for the front too. I think your case shows this might have helped and maybe avoided the crash all together. Also, for those of you with trailers, chains for the wheels on the braking axles. I shutter to think if that had been an outside curve.
I'm wondering if you had repaired the tire, and maybe wheel damage, if you couldn't have continued on with the truck and trailer. I didn't see damage in the video that would prevent it from being driven to a place with more options, but maybe there was.

I know enough about hauling large trailers that I didn't question your speed, I could tell you were trying to slow down, it was making me anxious just thinking about being in that situation! Not everyone realizes you can't just jam on the brakes like it's a passenger vehicle, especially with those road conditions! You would've jackknifed way earlier had you done that!

When the trailer is pushing the truck it means your brake controller was not set up correctly. The trailer brakes should grab slightly before the truck. Just an fyi

Good on you for sharing this experience! It seems that southern part of the Wasatch is pretty treacherous. My parents crashed on I-70 SW of Richfield many years ago in May due to a microburst. They were in a Toyota SR5 pickup - nothing huge like an RV.
I'll try to learn from your experience - again, thanks for posting this.
