You just have to love capitalism when it works; competition leads to better products.
Hopefully this game lights a fire under Gaijin and Wargaming.

11:50 Jingles, there are far more than just 5 commanders in the game. You can unlock them through other vehicles, like the M109, Gvosdika, LAV-300 etc. Also Freja is probably the best commander for MBT's.

+The Hungry Wolf 足柄 Freja is not the best MBT commander, Juan and Freja have basically the same skillset. 4 of the skills are the same, the 5th skill is different, Juan gets 15% acceleration after you shoot for 10 seconds. Freja gets increased crew damage by 50% after you break a module.

    • @Sithus666
      @Sithus666 9 років тому +3

+The Hungry Wolf 足柄 Indeed, I used rep to get the starting arty to 50%, without buying it and playing it, to unlock those commanders. I found that feature to be well worth it as I like their skill set for MBT's. There is the commander you unlock in the LAV-300 who seems to be a fire starter and there is the unlockable with the Sheridan that helps with ATGM's. Also Jingles didn't mention that Maximillian Koenig was only available by buying a Founder pack.

They certainly are the first well-known, big production value company to enter the tank genre. I mean, the companies doing tank games before AW (pretty much just Gaijin and Wargamming) we're all dedicated to their tank games and have done very little in the way of other, broader projects. Additionally, its competitors supported their business via micro transactions, and this actually leads to a slower rate of profit than what Obsidian typically do with big releases of games. Think of it as a high-dpm gun vs a high alpha-dmg gun; with Wot and Warthunder, the company has to wait for a bit to accumulate a large sum of money in order to pay developers, marketing, etc to push out a new patch, whereas Obsidian released full games that sold thousands of units for $40-60 each, which enables them to make a bigger, more constant effort in developing their game. Add in the community of UA-camrs and Streamers playing the game in a public way, and their marketing team can take a break basically

NJP695 it might be more accurate to say 'successful online multiplayer tank games'
because technically there were a fair number of tank games (some of which are very detailed, and are basically tank sim) before Wargaming even came up with World of Tanks...
but most of them are single player games or not really designed for multiplayer or simple matches...

There is a misconception here: you don't get ATGM and Arty warning indicator for being targeted by them, you only get it, if the missile, or the arty shell leaves the barrel and already on it's way. And the "shit happens" thing is when you are in an MBT and you get an ATGM warning, since you are in a slower tank, you can't dodge ATGMs 80% of the time, if the AFV's driver is a living, thinking human being :D

  • @Maddog3060
    @Maddog3060 9 років тому +118

Jingles, I can tell you made this when you were about to go to sleep, because you made some errors.
    1. The Sniper Bonus tank destroyers get in AW is based upon becoming fully-aimed. This applies to all ranges, not just long, although it does encourage long-range shooting because moving to avoid being shot in CQC obviously really screws up your aiming circle.
    2. Tank commanders. There are at least two more tank commanders in game than you showed there, both of which are unlocked through reputation (experience) unlocks in certain tanks. The LAV-300 and M551 Sheridan are two vehicles you can do this in, at least, although I am unsure if there are others. (Mainly because I haven't checked yet. XD )
    3. In the Taifun game you keep saying AP when you're obviously using HEAT at several points. That might be a bit confusing and disingenuous to some people.
    4. Speaking of ammo, you didn't quite explain the ammo types and target selection fully. HEAT rounds have larger damage ranges than AP rounds, for example, so they're worth taking a shot with if you're reasonably sure you'll penetrate. The back ends of MBTs are typically easier to pen with HEAT and ATGMs, which means flanking is important. AP rounds tend to do less damage overall than Shaped Charge ammo, but there's not only the overmatch mechanic to worry about, but as I mentioned they do less overall damage than SC even when they don't overmatch. So you tend to need to be very aware of the target you're shooting at and the armor it has so you can inflict maximum damage, or guarantee a penetration.
    5. A much smaller nitpick here, but another thing MBTs have in common with WoT Heavy Tanks are their massive HP pools. Although I do agree you need to be fearless when driving MBTs in Armored Warfare. They're made to be the brawlers, the punchers, the designated idiots. That way the tank destroyers, light tanks, and AFVs can shoot the distracted enemies in the ass. Asshole MBT drivers who hide in the back to snipe need to stop playing MBTs and go grind the TD line, the wankers.
Sorry to be a nitpicker, Jingles, but I don't want the rabid WoT fanboys to have anything to piss on AW with. Well, anything that AW doesn't deserve, anyway.
And WoT fanboys, I did say "rabid". Namely the ones who want to just rip into AW for no other reason than it's a competitor. If you genuinely dislike it based on personal preference then fair 'nuff.

+Maddog3060 You are so wrong in a lot of things..
You say MBTs need to be fearless.. What do you say about the Leopard 1 through 1A5?
Also, everyone knows that the T-64 all the way through the T-90 have bugged, paper thin armor that gets penned by anything. In fact the T-72 and T-72A are the only Tier 5 and 6 tanks that have their hull easily penetrated by anything, not requiring hits to the FLP or weakspots. The Leopard 1A5 being the only other tank that allows that to happen.
Penetration in this game is also TERRIBLY inconsistent.

+Maddog3060 Here's someone who doesn't realise that MBTs in AW are made out of paper and WILL get penetrated if they go out and brawl. Most of them, anyway, especially under tier 7. Most MBTs do best in a static hull-down position.

  • @NotNXTr

    Just some minor corrections:
    - Sniper bonus happens when your gun is fully aimed, or mostly fully aimed. It doesn't matter how far your target is at, as long as you aim your gun it'll get the damage bonus (15% I think). Notice how your aim reticle changes slightly when you fully aim your gun, that's the indicator.
    - You can unlock various commanders throughout the tech tree. Most of them are at tier4 vehicles (LAV-300 TD, Sheridan LT, M109 and Gvosdika artilleries). The overall most useful commander are Sabrina (which u get at the start), and the 2 you get on tier4 arties.

+Dv8 Random teams will allways suck in any games. And it dont help mutch that the AFV´s in Armored Warfare often belives that they shuld sit back and be snipers. That of course leaves the tanks nearly blind and they get shoot to pices without even being able to see the enemys that are shooting them. And then the AFV players starts to complain on the tanks beeing noobs since it is not THER fault that they are not doing what they shuld do. Like go ahead and scout.
I made a Introduction about Armored Warfare on my channel a while ago. And i will make another one where i explain what evry class shuld do in the vain hope that someone actualy will get it.
Seriusly when i get the award for doing the most spotting while driving a tank because the AFV´s hangs back in the rear beliving that they are snipers they clearly dont get what they realy shuld do.
Is the game simmular to World of Tanks. Kinda. But as Jingles said, it is on purpose. And you sure dont have base building or guided missiles in World of Tanks. And i see both games as good in ther own ways.

Agreed. AW places more emphasis on ammo type vs armor type than Warthunder, of course because WWII tanks had very few ammo/armor types than modern tanks, but Warthunder certainly goes more realistic with what happens when a shell hits and penetrates, modeling fragmentation and penetration most accurately, with long repair times that could easily keep you crippled for a long time

In warthunder you could grind out an entire nation with a t4 premium. but in this game it means nothing unless you are willing to spend hundreds on conversion costs..

Just to clarify something on ERA at 21:18, the Ramka-99's side and front armor (and the T-90's front hull armor) is covered in special Kontakt-5 ERA which does offer protection against Kinetic Energy (KE) penetrators. Kontakt-5 ERA gives protection against KE penetrators by literally shearing the penetrator in half. Normal ERA (such as on the T-72A, M1A1 TUSK kit, Bradley applique, BMP-3 ERA+Spaced armor cage, etc) does NOT offer extra protection against armor piercing shells, and only gives a massive bonus to protection against shaped charges.

Hahaha. Hold on, oh man, you're so funny. Lol. For a second there I thought you said the best way to destroy a tank ISN'T shooting a hatch or view port. Lol. Hahaha. But of course that's crazy. History shows us that 90 percent of the tanks destroyed in direct action were taken out by having a hatch blown off. You see, when the hatch is blown off, it creates a tremendous vacuum, and the crew is sucked out into space. This is basic science people.

    • @NJP695
      @NJP695 9 років тому +2

Indeed. We all know from playing World of Tanks that if you shoot the lead drive wheel of a tank the tracks come off, sending the crew into a full panic that consumes them until they either abandon the tank or scuttle it with self-destruct explosives, taking the their lives along with the tank as to never have the dishonor of truly losing to an enemy combatant. This is just basic war doctrine, people

Excellent video +The Mighty Jingles, but if anything this has pushed me more toward sticking with WOT, because:
    1) Crew perks such as 6th sense, eagle eye should be earned by experience, rather than given automatically, unless AW is giving them for a technological reason - targeting alarms etc.
    2) Crew skills seem absurdly powerful - 10% and 20% bonuses - is this geared toward faster advancement to lure players in with faster access to more powerful vehicles?
    3) Armour types and effectiveness vs ammo types - yeah, because WOT players are so good at firing the most appropriate ammo type, right?! Great for pros getting that extra few %, largely irrelevant for the average and below average player (vast majority of the player base).
    4) MBT armour and side-scraping degradation - surely this convention in tank armour was brought on by the tank brigade training to form a firing line, multiple tanks across, all exposing front armour only and covered by the tanks to either side. So players who cooperate and work together will be fine....do we see the problem there? Great for highly coordinated clans, a real weakness for the average and below average random gamer.
    5) Arty being spotted every time they fire - why? Arty is very rarely a nuke in WOT against attentive players, but good arty players can cause consistently significant damage - as they should be able to. Being lit up every time they fire is just pandering to the inattentive players who ignored the threat of arty and paid the price. I like what AW has done with lower damage, higher accuracy and rate of fire, but being exposed every time they fire seems unreasonable.
All in all, independently of WOT, AW looks like a really good game. But comparing the two, I still feel like WOT is superior for the average player. Of course we're comparing a mature game with one in beta, but with what we have to go on, that's how it currently feels.

As an WoT TD and Arty player (I dont play other classes except for cheap laugh).
I can not understand why players need warning about arty? Even in WoT it is #¤%& hard to hit what you aim as arty.
In AW they seem to have increased arty accuracy but destroyed its dmg making it basicly long-range scout tank :/
Why do I need to suffer from incompetence of other players? Because shitty ones whine about getting hit!!
Should it not be clear for players that if they are spotted arty might aim at them? Also what kind of nation/army uses arty that has less pen/dmg than H-tank?

    • @Myrskylintu

+Sólyom Csaba -- A word of advice. *Don't* play Ground Forces. *Just don't*. I mean, sure, go for it if you really like your Soviet tanks. Because at tier/battle-rating 3 the Soviet tanks just get overpowered. T-34s.
The T-34s just don't die. I uninstalled the whole game out of disgust yesterday. I shot at a T-34 to the side three times consecutively, hitting fuel tank and ammo rack. No effect. The T-34 swings the turret around and penetrates me frontally with a half-aimed shot and destroys every component in my tank from a frontal penetration. I tried M4 Shermans, Jumbos, Panzer IV F2s. No effect.
The only matches I won were the ones where we had Soviet tanks on our team, which was when I was playing American tanks. So that's 2 matches out of 30 matches. You can imagine how fun that was.
TLDR; Groundforces is very much fucking broken at this moment and time. Don't play it.

Danox94 -- And balance. In WoT, sure USSR tanks may do more damage but there are always drawbacks. Long reload, long aim time. I'd argue that maybe the tier X mediums on the USSR tree are a bit on the powerful side but they're nothing one can't handle if you know what you're doing. In Warthunder it doesn't matter if you know what you're doing, because you just get overpowered by Stronk Tenks made of Stalinium. It's just plain ol' bias. And don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
***** -- I'm sorry to hear that... Have you found any other flight games worthy of mentioning? It's a huge shame because I really started to get into the air-battles, too, but ... the very thought of spending time on a game that has that broken mechanics on some parts just pushes me away from it. I can't return to Warthunder, not even for the air combat.

+Cheeki Breeki Well, it's hardly surprising really, history is replete with companies that have coasted on the profits of their success due to lack of competition. Bring in said competition and watch as WG's development ethic takes a turn for the better. Calling it now ;)
AW also benefits from 4 years of development in WoT, they can instantly see what works and what doesn't with less work for themselves. Add in their own stuff and expand on what WoT has done right and you have a title that looks far better than it's predecessor.
That is one reason why I refuse to say that AW is better than WoT and vice versa. Time will tell whether AW success and exceeds, either way it'll good for the genre and the industry.

Jingles, composite armour isn't some kind of magical defence barrier against HEAT (or similar) ammo. If you know where to shoot, you'll still easily punch through. Like with that BMP-3 at 25:30. The upper glacis plate is clearly not covered by ERA. And it might be composite, but it's wafer-thin compared to other tanks. So shaped charge ammo will still /easily/ punch straight through that.

Don't forget the AFVs get a spotting range bonus for being stationary on top of the best camo values, so theyre incredibly dangerous in the form of getting MBTs attempting to attack shot by invisible tanks. And yes, the best two overall commanders are unlocked on the tier 4 arties. Another big change is unlocking the equipment to put on tanks, how equipment is non-transferrable, and increases in cost drastically with tier.

Accually Jingles, regarding gun depression: the first number is for over the front of your tank and the second is for over the back of your tank. In the leopard 1 senario, depression over front is ´-9 and the back/over the engine deck is 2.5, so your gun can only shoot up if you for some reason is pointing your back at enemies.
    .... Jingles?

Funny side note, in the EA stages someone called my BMP3 with the ERA packs a "Claymore" because he was using a Starship and none of his shots did any damage since my whole tank was covered in ERA panels, even on the lower frontal plate and the upper plate is angled ant a high degre bouncing incoming fire.

The greatest shake-my-head moment I've had in AW so far involved a guy demanding "no cap, kill all" in a PvE capture mission, and backing it up with his gun. As far as I can tell, there is no "all" in that kind of mission; the bots keep spawning until the players either cap, all die, or run out of time.
I bailed on that mission before he could TK me; I like to imagine that he's still there, weeks later, raging in chat about the other team's obvious hax as the 19,453th PT-76 trundles over the hill. (I know he can't be, but it's a pleasing image.)

I think the most interesting thing that Armored Warfare taught me about tank history was that at some point during the early arms races of the Cold War, when the missile was developed and it became portable and practical for use in regional conflict, there was somewhat of a period of ideological uncertainty; easily noted with tanks like the XM551 Sheridan and the M60e4 (I think that's the name), no one was sure if missiles marked the end of cannons and shells. Also evident in the history of the fighter jet the F-4 Phantom, it wasn't clear if the development of the missile marked the end of cannons firing shells, and given all the different types, sizes, and calibers of shells, if the paradigm shift did in fact go towards skirmishes fought with guided missiles it was cheaper to outfit tanks with universal launching tubes of cannons than picking/choosing a gun and paying out the factory lines to supply the ammunition. Obviously, that wasn't the case, but it wasn't before. EDUCATION!

The commander gotten from the M109 (Freja Hojbjerg) is also great for autocannon-armed vehicles. Just throwing this out here for anyone wanting to know o7
Also, that cannon depression stat is over the front and rear of the tank, rather than actual depression and elevation.

Forgot to explain what those small circular bars around your tank model on the UI mean, under the camo talk.
Those circular bars tell you how much approximate concealing you are getting from the general direction they are at. If you got a bar on the right side of your tank and nothing on the front then you probably have a bush or something nearby providing a camo bonus to anything looking at your direction from that side.
The more bars you have, the better concealed you are. Also, those bars go from grey to white, that's going from poor camo bonus to big camo bonus respectivelly (think of it like different bush density providing different bonus levels like in WoT); though usually if it's a bright white bar then it means you are being obstructed by a rock, wall or bump and nothing can spot you through that way unless it is a proxy spotting much like in WoT

Jingles at around 13:25 when you talk about the depression, first number is gun depression in the front, the other one is over the back of your vehicle, that why the Leopard 1 shows +2.5° because the gun has to be elevated over the engine deck.

One thing you missed was that the experience earned on a tank doesn't get reduced towards your next tank when purchasing modules, I think this is great because it doesn't slow down your progress towards the next tank just because you have spent the xp on a new gun etc.

    Quality content as always!
Only one suggestion, a 1000-2000kbit to bitrate of your 60p videos, it gets a bit grainy when moving :)
    Great work!

Jingles! You forgot about the Infantry bonuses the IFVs get!
While they aren't modeled, the effects are. When you stop for more than... 6 seconds I think? It's assumed the infantry get out and set up an observation post, giving you a spotting range bonus. And when capturing a zone parking the vehicle lets the troops get out and secure the area giving a boost to capture rate. An IFV with the Retrofits to increase cap rate capture almost as fast as 2 normal vehicles!
They've become my favorite class. I was really worried they'd suck because they have all this space and tonnage dedicated to troops, which I didn't expect to be modeled. But they are, and get some fun bonuses in certain situations as a result.

You forgot the HERA aka High Explosive Rocket Assisted, which the M109 guys fire, flying rather quick and massively ranged also posibly penetrating the roof of your tank, which will take out your crew and modules so fast, you´ll need the spare parts kit to repair.

Jingles. There are more than the 5 commanders you have, they are in the various trees. I've heard the commander's available in each of the 2 artilery tree's are the best commanders for main battle tanks. As always keep up the great video's.

I was dissatisfied with WoT mostly because of the era of hardware it offered. I wanted modern material. This video, however, enlightened me to many other differences between AW and WoT, and I'm pleased with all of them. Thank goodness for competition.

you can angle your MBT armor in AW but its more a 1-2° angle, wait till the enemy shots pull further back fire and then get your front back into cover again

Its funny that you mention the over penetration mechanic in this game versus WoT because yesterday I was playing with a friend, and I fired a shell from my Jagdtiger's long 128 at a T54E1. The shell, of course, penetrated the hull at a slight angle because he was at the top of a hill. My friend then said that he actually saw my shell exit out the other side of the tank. In Armored Warfare, that wouldn't have been a full damage hit, but it of course was in WoT and really, if you think about it, I should have done more than just HP damage to him. The shell penned in the tank's right of the lower glacis, and then - I presume - exited out of the top of the engine deck, just behind the turret. The crew and module damage that would have actually done would be damn near crippling.

you can also get additional commanders by unlocking them from particular tanks. The LAV-300 for example.
