  • Richard Dreyfuss is an Activist and a spokesperson on the issue of media informing policy, legislation, and public opinion, both speaking and writing to express his sentiments in favor of privacy, freedom of speech, democracy, and individual accountability. With an entertainment career spanning more than four decades, Academy Award-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss has been one of America's most versatile and individualistic actors. As a Community Leader, his current focus and passion is to encourage, revive, elevate and enhance the teaching of civics in American Schools. He is the Founder of the non-profit organization, www.TheDreyfussInitiative.org. and is leading a nation wide effort to bring back civics to our American youth: "All people have a right to know who they are and why they are who they are. Clarity of thought and honesty in self-reflection are more than needed utilities -- they are the building blocks of our national moral character." (From: Why I Love My Country). Richard also serves on the committee for Education with the American Bar Association, 12 years on the Board of the National Constitution Center, a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and served as Senior Research Advisory Member of St. Antony's College, Oxford University.

I have watched this many times and get something new each time, including more gravity. All his points are key points and one stands out right now, the obvious one. THEY stopped teaching this because if they took away the knowledge, they could run govt for themselves. Is that NOT exactly what they are doing today? Thats how idiots and charlatans and commies got in, we didnt know enough to disallow it. I never gave up Civics and echo the call to bring it back. Dreyfus should have weekly teaching on YT and it can spread.

TEACH the Constitution; how free market Capitalism works.; personal responsibility...
Realistically accept that there is a right and left side to the IQ curve,
and teach a marketable skill to every child accordingly,,, all else is folly.
Only a conscientious, civil, informed citizenry can keep the American Experiment alive.

I like Richard's love of civics. Young kids are able to understand not just the functions of government, but the interesting theories of human nature that led to the fashioning of it.

What makes it more difficult today is because men interpret the constitution instead of simply reading it, and acting accordingly.

    • @Phil0will1
      @Phil0will1 5 років тому +4

Mr. McWhorter, I don't think getting rid of them is practical and I don't think that is Mr. Dreyfuss's message. In fact, in his interview with Tucker Carlson, he said, "The Constitution and the Bill of Rights must be central and the parties must be peripheral." That is pretty much the opposite of what the situation is today - if we can even say that that the Constitution is peripheral. The partisan war has become such a dominant factor that it basically obliterates every other consideration.

    Hooyah, Mr. Dreyfuss!!!
May I show your amazing speech to my local community?
Lol...The movie, JAWS...inspired me to join our great nation’s Navy...lol...It made me want to be...a combination of you, Sir...and Mr. Shaw...and Mr. Schneider...Lol!!!
Now, as a 56 year year old retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer...you and your words...have inspired me anew!!!
Our great nation is indeed in grave clear and present danger, and as the father of two amazing daughters, aged 11 and 15...I simply refuse to quietly into that gentle good night!!!
We who call ourselves Patriots...Must All Do Better!!!
You have inspired me...lol...at my tender age...
To become a teacher of Civics and Philosophy...

I agree that teaching civics is important. I believe there is a huge deficit in understanding basic civics in the U.S. However, I think it's erroneous to say it's been removed from our schools. He claims it hasn't been taught in schools since 1970. However, I had a great civics class in Texas in 1983. The lessons I learned are what I have drawn upon to build on online class to prepare people for the U. S. Naturalization Test.

Perhaps he is speaking most of California, I don't know. I am in my 60s; I remember learning about civics. But that was in early 60s. What I believe he may be alluding to may be SOME educational portions of our nation, and I really think it is in CALIFORNIA, because it is so unbelievably crazy here.

    His voice is fine
    I watched him in Jaws
My mom told me his acting was enigmatic and electrifying and that his character in general is intellectually talking to an audience that was not taught life in general
My mom was a civics major in school when the average student graduated school and my dad died during The Vietnam Conflict so yes Richard you are making a lot more sense
And They should be taught civics in school
We were from kiddy cottage to 2nd.grade
    TO THE FOURTH
But after that its Reagan and Carter
    Then its WTF

I completely agree with Mr. Dreyfus as to the need for civics education, and I applaud this effort. His sense of history, however, is slightly off. We are not the first in the history of humankind to call for equal justice under the law:
"'Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly."
"Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits."
"Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike."
"Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the innocent."
"It is not good to be partial to the wicked and so deprive the innocent of justice."
"Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
Source? The Bible -- not the New Testament; rather, the much-maligned Old Testament/Hebrew Bible ("Tanakh"). In those legal books -- Leviticus and Deuteronomy, plus some wise words from Proverbs -- most people wave off because they're so "boring," and "judgmental."
Mr. Dreyfus also ignores the Magna Carta (1215), which was the ancestor -- via English law -- and formed some of the basis of our Constitution, which was written by men (Jefferson and Adams, for example) who had been educated in the English legal system. While the leaders of the new country made important changes, some of the language was taken directly from the Magna Carta (particularly the Fifth Amendment). Of course, the rejection of monarchical rule (which had already weakened significantly in England by that time) was an important feature of the new government. But back then, there was still a strong class system, and few people rose above their "station" -- certainly very few enslaved people -- until the 19th century. And even then, the upper classes and rich industrialists were very much powers behind the scenes. Dreyfus describes an important ideal, but let's not play fast and loose with history.

I very much agree that civics is an essential part of middle and high school. More students should do college courses on political philosophy and American history. That said, I am not confident that civics teaching in today's USA would not sink into left of centre brainwashing. For example, few high school and college teachers mention Burkean conservatism.
