Your voice is calming, you are incredibly articulate and speak with intelligence, it makes it easy to listen and absorb your advice, also the editing and animations feel like I'm sitting in a class, which keeps me focused. Awesome video, your hard work that goes into them seriously pays off.
+Med School Insiders hey man congrats for sticking it out in med school. You should make a video of how important it is for young men to attain and maintain self discipline
@medschool insiders thank you for doing this. I was struggling with a couple of things, came across your channel and your insight and wisdom has helped me solve some major situations. I appreciate you sharing this information with the world.... thank you 💜
"We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons."
I’m so annoyed with myself because I always watch self help and motivational videos like these, and then this great feeling of “I’m going to change my life!” Comes over me, but then a couple hours later it’s gone and I’m back to hating myself :)))
One of my self disciplines is studying. I started to adopt it in 9th grade because I had this surge of inspiration to become a doctor. I will admit at first studying and making sure I know very thing for the tests is tough. I don't like waking up early 2 hours for school to study, but I have grown to love the process. As a sophomore in high school currently, now I don't find studying in the morning and in addition to coming home a chore anymore. I really love your videos as it keeps me on set to keep learning. I never had anyone in my family who was a doctor. It's tough not having someone to reassure you, but your videos really reassure me when I am worried about medical school. Thanks for the videos!!!
I'm in year 9 (which in America is 8th grade, I think...)and I also want to become a doctor. So I started focusing on the subject which I need to get high grade on more. I just don't know how i should get started. Can anyone give me advice, pls.
@@marizafernandes2553 as a first step, look into "active recalling" as it is a much more effective mode of studying than "passive learning" or "passive recognition". There are different ways in which you can incorporate active recalling into your studying. Also - idk what you need to _get into_ medical school, but I for sure know that you need to know your basics in math, physics, chemistry and biology very well. See what requirements there are for getting into medic school in your country. In my country there is a test which combines math, physics, chemistry, biology, and I think also some more medicine-related stuff. Look into it as much as you can, so you know WHAT to study. After you know WHAT to study the most important things are to gain a deep understanding and practise a lot. And well - memorizing is also very important. I'm not in medical school, I'm simply speaking from my experience studying on my own. Find someone who is a medical student in your university of choice and ask them what it is like, especially people in first or second year.
@@essennagerry thnx for the advice. I am already focusing on the subjects that are required to get into medical school and still need to improve my memorising skill. At the moment it is not the best so I'll try doing different things to help me. Thank you for the information as well.
My path to self discipline started five years ago, when I realised how much time, health and money I was wasting on weed. I cut that off my life. The next step was stop smoking, and that happened from a day to the following, without problems, then I quit drinking two years later (never been a big alcohol fan, but since then I just removed any kind of alc-drink). At the same time I started going to the gym regularly, and I never stopped. Now my current in-progress habit is to eat less meat and less fried food, and increasing vegetables portions. Also, I've been reducing my shopping routine to minimalist for one and a half years. I've achieved something, but still have to learn a lot.. Thank you Jay for the inspiring content!
Great accomplishments Lucia. You could help a huge amount of individuals that have the same problems that you had. I challenge you to start reading books written by Saints in this year of 2019, or saints biographies. They will teach you a lot about virtues, which you seem to be very very fond of, even you still don't know you are - yet. As a rule of thumb, they tell how the saints, who were ordinary people, went from a life full of emptiness to a life full of fulfillment. You seem to be a person who will really understand their life examples and will benefit from them. I highly recomend that for you. Congratulations!
I recall a time when I lacked a lot of self-discipline but I decided to try to do just one thing consistently daily. I decided to make my bed every morning I got up and sure enough, adopting one simple habit translated into developing other healthy habits as well!
Yes I have heard this is a common one, makes sense too. How can we do moderately challenging tasks when we cant do basic ones related to looking after ourselves - Maslow.
just starting doing something is the smallest and most important step, after you start your mind can't help but be creative and start loving the challenges you face and coming up with solutions for those challenges.
I realize watching motivational videos first thing in the morning increase my productivity throughout the day. So my habit is watching a video in the morning
Post separation I found it very difficult to do even simple things like shave regularly and clean up after dinner. One day I was reading the guitar subreddit and someone mentioned developing better practice techniques by giving yourself a simple task that you do every day for 30-days. The idea being that there will be a snowball effect and you will be motivated to improve other areas of your life and meet new goals. I started with shaving everyday, next was washing all dishes (by hand) after each meal and after cooking, I started making my bed everyday, brushing my teeth and flossing twice instead of once per day, and it goes on. One thing that isn't addressed in the video is being kind to yourself when you are facing a consequence or don't meet a goal. It is extremely important to not judge or be cruel to yourself in the process. I have seen many people get tripped up with their personal goals because of this. You are human and you will not be perfect. Mistakes and lapses in judgement or will power will happen, but when they do, forgive yourself and try to stay unemotional about not meeting your goal. Do what you have to do to fix it while being kind to yourself, and move on. Great video, thank you!
Ryan Harris I know what you mean. sometimes I think that if I am hard on myself when I mess up, I won't make that mistake again, but in reality, all that does is magnify the mistake until it seems as if my entire life failed due to that small mistake. This eventually snowballs as cycles of disappointment and fear of failure stop me from trying new things because you can't fall if you never got up off yhe floor to begin with. All it takes to break out of that mind set is an experience that allows you to realize that you aren't a failure and have value that you don't give yourself credit for. personally, failing to get into med school was a trigger that caused this to happen to me, and it took a great physician mentor to bring my self confidence back. and after getting accepted, I feel as if I am finally back on the road to recovery.
Reading your comment really made me feel at peace in a way and motivated. I can truly relate with you on the personal care part, as a person who has suffered from depression for many years(since childhood) I really haven't ever had a routine of taking care of myself and my life if ya know what I mean. I've always seen other ppl and thought why can't I have a perfect life like them, be able to do the daily things you know, have a daily routine. It's really frustrating/irritating and depressing, but now that I am older and wiser I have understood that NO ONE is perfect. We all struggle either one way or another, that's just what's life and we're human beings we are NOT perfect at all. Although how we wish but we are not, and that's ok we struggle but we have to move forward with life no matter what happens or what we've been through. It all gets better just believe this, we'll get better. Bad things don't last forever that's the relief we have. Most of all God has seen us struggle all of us in different ways, He will help us all with our difficult life situations, just believe it because it is true :)
I have been doing that for the past week or so. I already lost 10 pounds. I have started power walking my dog and then giving up bread, pasta, etc. which is tough, but who knew cabbage, cucumber would taste really good? It's discipline, but it is worth it. Wish me luck for the next few pounds I will lose!
Omg! I started to do what he said a month ago before I watch this video and my life improved significantly! I can relate to what he said so much!! I did literally everything he said and I've become more confident and happier.
I started my disciple process on 1/1/2018 by commuting to go to the Gym every other day and I successfully completed the process whether I am tired, sick, snowing, raining, busy, etc. Same year, I committed to fill my mind with positive thoughts as soon as I open my mind in the morning for 5 minutes and I have been doing since then. I am proud of myself.
Lately, I have been learning about stoicism and I read Ryan Holiday's book "The obstacle is the way". It was working fine for months, my girlfriend left me and I took it positively and worked on myself instead of feeling sorry for myself. But then my grandfather passed away due to COVID and that hit hard. But I'm happy to say I found a way of both honouring him and taking care of myself at the same time. He passed at the age of 79, so I decided to take it as a challenge as he was a very disciplined person himself (he went swiming every day and cycling and working out with weights). For 79 days I will be working out in the gym and count my calories and macros and wake up early.
One habit that I will break is watching UA-cam or TV for more than 1 hour without doing anything. I'll at least do something like clean my room or research scholarships in between an hour of watching. This is especially hard over the summer so hopefully I can get this done!
Today I will keep my room clean. It's super simple but being a designer, full time college student while working 2 jobs leaves you rushing all the time. I feel as if when my room is clean, my mind is clean and organized such as the things around my room. I can pick and put things back when I'm finished without a hassle. Simple tasks like this allows me to bring it into my work and school life when dealing with multiple tasks needing to be completed. Thank you so much for this.
personally I wake up at 5 everyday and train alone for basketball at the court for 1.5hr.den hv my med school till9am- 5pm...den I selfstudy 2-3 hrs ..Dis hs been my routine for nearly 3 months..and it feels great.Wud nt HV been possible without discipline.. .self discipline is indeed necessary.nice video mate.keep up d gud work.
Growing up I wasn't taught how to be a disciplined person and it definitely wasn't a natural state of being for me. Some of the things that helped me become a disciplined person was 1) Making a goal and figuring out all of the tasks that need to be done for that goal and mastering one of them before moving on to the other 2)Making a checklist of these tasks and referring to them throughout the day. At the end of the week I checked back in with myself to see how much of it I accomplished 3) I put many of these tasks that had to be done daily into a routine-doing them one after the other 4) At night I did everything that I would normally do the next day, that night if I could (shower, laying out clothes, packing my briefcase/gym bag, etc) so that I could immediately get started when I wake up 5) I took care of MYSELF first even if I had to get up earlier to do it. This gave my day a good foundation to start. 6) I did whatever task I disliked first. That way I got it out of the way and could look forward to the rest of the day. 7) I set a time to END MY DAY. I worked from my task list (that combined all of the tasks that related to my goal) until it was time to stop. Then I relaxed because I knew that EVERYTHING I did that day was productive. The year I started doing that, my life improved. Thank you for sharing yours in this video!
I think you'll make a great doctor. It's hard to find docs that know and admit the struggle, and find ways to rise above and conquer, rather than just spew rhetoric. You can share a good example as proof for your patients. You'll be more effective because of it. Our family enjoys your videos. Applicable to life in general, especially for those who want a life of purpose. Thank You kindly!
How to self discipline 3:00 1. Start small 3:38 2. Practice daily, no excuses (a tired workout is better than no workout) 4:37 3. Ramp up, slowly 5:18 Other tips: 5:26 Make it easier for your future self. 6:00 Build the appropriate systems (add rewards/chocolate, consequences/bill yourself) 6:43 The misconception of doing what you love : the key is grow to love the process
A bad habit I have is, that I only "enjoy" using UA-cam I see videos all the day along, and I'm studying medicine too, I will start changing your video gives me a motivation... Thanks
I admit I am not the most disciplined person, but college, work, and clubs helped me prioritize my time and stay productive. However, being on quarantine made me feel even less disciplined, therefore motivated. I am setting a goal of waking up at 9 am every day (which is a damn accomplishment during quarantine times) and completing different parts of my future projects and tests that I would usually do at the last minute. To be honest, I am writing this just to make myself feel accountable for this goal. "I will do it, and then I will begin to feel like it", that's my new motto. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for making this video. I am a first year, Caribbean medical student and have suffered some draw-backs in my personal life that have affected my medical education. Right now I am trying to re-gain my focus, determination, and self-discipline. I found this video very helpful!
It seems that these handwriting self-explanatory videos are trending on UA-cam now. This one was just what I needed. My discipline is a pike a crap nowadays .
Everyone needs to see this. Thanks for creating the videos ... ran across it when looking for meditation, getting rid of distractions, revamping focus. Great videos - definitely putting the tips into use now!
This doesn't go just for med school peeps, it's helped me in my liberal arts/history-major-founded college, and the stuff I've seen here has given me a better physical grounding for applying the intellectual/spiritual things I've learned. In the words of the first Hunger Games book, I have "learned to be hungry" and commit a little better to praying and studying, largely because I got the pomodoro technique and other self-disciplining videos like this. You're teaching people who have been super privileged how to suck it up and get down to earth with themselves, and thus with others: as one of these people, I just wanted to say thanks and let you know the good that THESE videos, unlike so many others, can do - for me, has done- in the lives of others. You're a real doctor of mind and body alike! (don't take that as flattery, I mean it)
Hi, I'm a French med student and I started to watch your video a few days ago and I love it, you're doing a great job ! I'm using Pomodoro Technique to improve my self discipline (30/7min)
I'm not a medical student. I'm a mom and a private tutor. You're videos are great for whatever discipline you are in. I am sharing your videos with my students and my teenagers. Thank you.
All of your videos help me to push myself to strive to improve myself and my study habits. I've been using Pomodoro and holding myself accountable when I study to harness more self-discipline. Thanks for uploading, Jay. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Every time I watch something similar I get excited and say I WILL do this and that and I might do it for a day or two or even a week... then I don't know what happens I just find myself depleted and depressed again
Yeah, true. However, that's what i think he means when he says "love the process". To try to find motivation in what you're doing, not just the end result. Like people who go to the gym often say the like the feeling of the pain when they lift weights etc.
like he said, do it then you'll begin to feel like it, and if you can't do it all do only a small part of it (not like do it all or do nothing) then when you get USED to do the small part make it a little bit bigger ;)
Star seek God, turn your life to the lord Jesus and things will pan out accordingly as to His will If you are running out it is because you are short sighted (as all of us are without God) Jesus is the one who actually will teach you And will give you farsightedness The focus of every human should be the will of God To please God Not ourselves God created the world (universe) in a certain way With moral precepts So if we have lost touch with them or been confused about them and so don't live to them Then things will never be right It is only Jesus Christ who makes things right in anyone's life Because He is the author of their lives The son of God It is not always easy for a person to accept this but it is up to us to choose Just as it is not easy to accept many things a secular mind deals with in this world, making hard decisions about various financial, educational, and medical things Having to humble oneself to something, some truth some presence.. So it is like that with God Most people don't like that there is someone to judge morally But these are people without a compass who do not desire one So is much of human nature... Everyone has a choice though The alcoholic, the wife beater, the adulterer, the drug dealer etc etc They can choose to keep crossing the lines and doing what is wrong and hurting others Or they can turn to the God of mercy of morality of redemption of majesty of truth of love The choice is everyones All have heard the gospel of Jesus Christ to some degree All have seen His image All have made choices What choice will you make?...
I am 17 and used suck my thumb but I am on the process of stopping and being wasteful instead start being productive live the life I would wish to live. You are one of my advisors now . Thankyou
Your videos are incredibly useful, so grateful for all your tips. I used to struggled a lot with self-discipline in many areas; academics, exercise, eating. But I’ve slowly made some changes and make better use out of my time. For example, I do some of my weekly readings during long commutes, summarise key information and look back at this after a few days. I eat two fruits for breakfast and try have the same healthy thing such as cereal that’s high in fibre saves time sticking to a routine with eating. I exercise for shorter periods during my breaks, this helps me to refresh and get work outs in rather than going on social media or something. The main thing that also helps me is waking up early and going to sleep early. Personally I feel that I get more done starting around 5/6am, far less distractions. Another thing, to prevent distractions is using apps that restrict time on the apps where you spend unnecessary time on. Thanks again!! :)
watching this has really helped me as I'm slowly getting my life in order. I've spent two years practically living under a rock and feel like I've let so many opportunities to learn and grow pass me by. I watched the video twice and the second time, I took notes. now I'm going to break this up into small goals and practice everything you've spoken bout in this video, little by little, everyday. thank you so much for uploading this !! I feel like my intentions were there but I just didn't have the right path to walk on and I watching this video has given me that ! thank you!!
coincindentally, i'm doing the stairs thing too! i'm currently working on studying daily and this has proven to be the hardest habit to cultivate of them all :-(
Many years ago I used to dream of being an airplane pilot, then it was to be as big as Arnold, then to be a physician, and so on. I just kept setting goals for myself to achieve but I didn't have the discipline to achieve them which depressed me because I didn't feel a sense of worth. I think there may be a link between clinical Depression and not achieving your goals. Because it really feels painful when you have a dream but you just didn't achieve it. You feel so worthless, and it kills ANY motivation to live on. I'm perfectly healthy now, but I just wonder, for all the people with serious cases of depression, how many dreams did they have?...
I failed at finishing my Anthropology bachelors thesis satisfactorily and that threw me in a depression state that lasts until now (its been 5 years now...) as a result i neglected all other aspects of my life and that just made it worse. Im slowly recovering now and re taking control of my life.
clauview122 I took Anthropology intro class in university, and I dropped it. The teachers of anthropology, and most humanity courses make the content harder then it has to be so that their branch of discipline doesn't die out (which most should). I don't know how you feel about Anthropology but personally, I say FUCK IT! You never needed it anyway. Don't even think about it, let alone shedding a tear for that shit. Let me tell you a story that might help (it's long so bare with me). I went into university to become an English teacher because I could see myself teaching. Guess what? I finished it half-way, but something happened randomly. ALL MY PLANS went the complete opposite direction. I fell in love, with science. I took an intro science course and I just fell SO HARD in love. Before I was becoming an English teacher, now I'm an A+ Genetics student (top Genetics student for my year & class). And I got A+ in Human anatomy, and all A's in all things science. You know something funny? I completely SUCKED at English, I would get 55% on my essays even though I worked on them day and night till 4am. I just wasn't good at humanities, but I found I was actually very good at science. Now I'm either planning PhD in Genetics/Molecular Biology, or becoming a physician. Please, PLEASE, don't worry at all about Anthropology. We all have hidden gifts, we just gotta experience and we'll found out what we're good at! Please try all areas of science, and try some mathematics, maybe you'll find one and fall in love. I hope you find your true love, it's out there somewhere in all the pile of majors... :)
The worst part is that my mother is arrogant so the world is black and white to her, she thinks she knows everything, so it's quite hard to get support from your family, it's even harder to self heal you. I'm studying to get into uni and so far I haven't been able to get 1/3 what I need to learn, and the exam will happen in 5 months.
Star Quake Hey let me tell you something, work hard, know what you want in life and go after it. Parents pressure you because you need to be pressured, if we have no fire burning behind us, we won't move forward. Let your parents light a fire behind you because it's their job, they're meant to be assholes sometimes lol. I know this one girl who's "best friends" with her mom, and guess what? They both smoke weed, they both do some messed up shit, they both go to parties and waste their lives, and they're both fuck-ups. Why? Because her parents are chill, they're super cool, and they let her get away with anything. And guess what? She's COMPLETELY fucked. She's stuck in the ghetto now. You know those parents that are assholes and they pressure you all the time? They're a blessing in disguise. I realized whenever my dad would compare me to my cousin who's a PhD and say that I failed in life because I can't afford to buy a mansion, he's doing me a HUGE FUCKING favor. Because, I use that for my fire, I take it all in, all the comparing and the hate against me and my status. I take it all in and I go into exams READY TO FUCKING KILL THOSE PAPERS. I don't know if this is gonna help you or not, but seriously, your parents are a blessing. I've had so much comparisons to my "successful" cousins that I would cry myself to sleep, honestly it was some mean shit they would say lol. But now I know, they're disappointed. But, I will change that. So you should change it too buddy. Work hard and achieve greatness. What you think you're capable of is only 10% of what you're actually capable of. There is 90% of greatness trapped inside you, it is only there because you think you can't access it...
I'm still an undergraduate (rising junior🎉🎊) PrePharmacy student, but I like to think that these videos help to prepare me for the rigors of pharmacy school. Over the summer I'll be setting a small 30x30 goal. Every day I'll spend thirty minutes working out and thirty minutes studying/prepping for one of my on-campus positions for next year/writing down goals in a planner or journal. And then hopefully I'll "ramp it up!"💪🏾💪🏾
In the last year i let myself go on a loooong time. Now, a few weeks ago i started to Train everyday, drink only water and Study harder than ever. Ive achieved a lot in that weeks. Lost a lot weight, eating healthier, learned very much about myself in that time. But its still Intense to keep the discipline on track. For example if you about to give up on something. I used to go jogging 2 times every day. And that is really not that nice in winter when its extreme cold outside or Raining. So i decided to just go for a walk instead of running. So that im not too exhausted and still have energy to do smth after it. But at the end i did it. You understand? I kept my discipline. And thats the key. Its not how much energy you spend on things, its about to "make" those things. You can make the best out of it, if you regulate your energylevel for the day. For example, you go to the gym and you study afterwards - On which thing do you spend more action and energy into? Think about it. When time gets past, then you can give more energy and action on these activities that structures your discipline. Dont change them all to Maximum at the beginning. Just a little amount of energy (use it clever) and then you can still focus on the other things. Learn to create priorities. And then my friends, when the time comes, you will achieve Awesome Things! Amen.
"If I had the luxury to ask myself whether or not to go, that meant I already had my answer." That sentence really resonated with me. I've never though about it like that.
During times when I have to act on a task but don't feel motivated to, I always remember the phrase, "successful people do what they have to do, whether they feel like it or not." by Brian Tracy. I repeat this phrase over and over again, and it gets me up and going.
thank you! it's been hard for me to discipline myself to study for my final assignment. this video is a huge help for me start disciplining myself :) i will try to make studying a habit. thank you so much for this video
Thankyou for that. I'm a teacher trying to get reports done. I can put all this into practice. It's what I wish trainee teachers knew too, it's a stressful job at times!
For the most part, I have gotten to a point in my life where I would say I am, for the most part, a very self-disciplined person. I usually get up early in the morning when to get a head start on my day, and this also allows me some extra time to set my priorities. I have also found the pomodoro technique very helpful for studying, and eventually you get to the point where you don't really need the timer as much
I'm not even a med student, but currently doing an IB and a theatre education at the same time. Your videos has really helped me procrastinate less and be happier in general, because I reach my goals more often, Thank you so much!
I have begun saying no to smoking weed as often. It is definitely helping me clear the haze in my mind and actually makes me to be less emotional/reactive. FYI...There is an free audiobook on self-discipline with a corresponding workbook that is on youtube! Can you believe that? I listened to that awhile ago and wrote down the benefits of self discipline in a few places so that I would read it. It has helped. This is an awesome vid and I like the two options: start when you feel or do it and then feel like it, somehow the way this guy puts it makes the puzzle pieces fall together. Onward!!!!
I wake up at 4 to keep myself disciplined. I learnt to make and stick with my habits by the information you provided in your Atomic Habits book summary video.
The biggest thing that I do that encourages my self-discipline is I take the time to feel proud of myself. A lot of times people will try to play down their accomplishments or neglect rewarding themselves because the things they accomplished were not significant and to them didn't mean they were worthy of reward, for example, getting a good grade on an exam in 100 or 200 level classes. I reward myself every time. The rewards never have to be big, I might buy a can of coke or shorten a study session, but the important thing is that I acknowledge my success and then have the discipline to move on. One thing I need to do better is to keep track of assignments and deadlines. I need to learn to love the process of completing assignments and turning them in just as much as I love the process of studying for an exam and acing it. One way I can work on accomplishing this is by making sure to be proud of turning in my assignments. Maybe on friday or saturday, if I turned in every assignment of the week and met every deadline, I can take 20 minutes off of a study session or get a sugary snack to bring to work.
Can you please do a follow up video on "how you can grow to love your process" since you said this was an idea that deserved a video on its own? I really enjoyed this video and I want to be even more informed of this topic. Great video and thanks.
Thank you so much for this great video. I found myself always set goals too big and have a hard time to achieve them. Your suggestions on starting small and ramp up makes a lot of sense.
youtube videos, I waste hours watching them, I know what I have to do but I end up in a marathon of 15min videos that eats up a huge part of my day, thanks for the video very helpful
I've decided today that if I'm not extremely busy, i'll make an effort to draw 2 illustrations, colored or not, and 3 sketches everyday. There is nothing more I want than to improve, and I have lots of time on my hands and I LOVE what I do, so I think I'll be able to. (Until school, that it.)
Could you consider doing a video on the importance of finding a role model and advice on how to do this? I've heard a few docs mention this before but never really understood. Love your videos btw - concise and informative.
I hate studying Spanish but now I want to give it a try. I will start learning three words per day and my goal is to really like it by having good grades at school and start using it in my everyday life. Thank you so much for this video!
I’ve always lacked self discipline, then I go into a crippling spiral on to why my life wasn’t going the way I wanted it to go. Anyways one thing that I’ve been trying to do is staying off social media, I started by deleting my Twitter(on accident), then a year later I deleted my Instagram. Now I’m trying to delete Facebook as well. For me it’s always been social media, I’ve struggled with. Especially since I would spend hours on there instead of doing homework or other tasks I had to do. It’s been hard but I’ve been trying to use that time that I would normally spend on social media by reading more books.
heyy how has that been for you? What about with keeping up with friends and all that? Social media is also a huge problem for me and I have no problem with deleting all those apps, however, i'm scared that i'll lose my friends (as crazy as it sounds lol)
Worst thing for me I think is that I choose my schedule with what I'm going to do, so that also gives me the freedom to procrastinate with only me to punish myself, so when I do procrastinate I don't punish myself. Which means there are no consequences short term, long term it means I won't achieve my goals and eventually my dream. It's hard to create drive when giving your all might be for nothing. But I'm gonna stop thinking like that, today as off 5 minutes I'm gonna run, get home, plan and structure, sleep and wake and jog again. Work towards my goal and WILL result in my dream. Wish me luck guys, and I wish everyone reading this achieves true happiness and their dreams, whatever those dream may be, chase them! Because I ain't dying without achieving my dream!
Apart from working and studing, which is hard, I realised that something I really want is to get better at playing the guitar. So I dicided to play every day even for 10 or 5 min, since then I've seen a tangible progress in my playing. Thanks for your vids, they're great.
I've been doing things wrong. I keep motivating myself to do certain activities. Every time I want to do something or there's a goal that I want to reach I keep finding things to stimulate my brain to do work. You are correct if I want to do something that I've been wanting to do I need to acquire that Self-Discipline by doing things and not avoiding or having to excuse myself
Wow thank you so much for this video and channel. Especially the last bit of loving the process. I'm going into my 2nd year of undergrad and I started doubting my ability to get into med school cuz I didn't do so great first semester. (I got it together tho last semester). I also feel like I'm going to endure more challenges as a black women who wants to be a surgeon (reconstructive plastic like you^^). I'm really going to try to be more disciplined in these next few years and not discourage my self from even starting medical school
A thing which has worked for me in the past is to schedule a time to do something. For example, running is, for me, a difficult habit to cultivate, but it's easier to do it in the mornings, before breakfast. It helped me immensly on the course of my life.
The problem is, after being motivated for a while, things go back to the way they were. The maximum period I was able to keep strict productive routine was about 2 weeks, I actually thought I had changed for good, but then there was a complete, total breakdown. I think I went for changing too much all at once all of a sudden, will power muscle got fatigued.
happens with me as well, you acknowledge what happened though at least! Maybe start veryyy small and then gradually build to that as time passes so that the will power muscle doesn't get tired
In regards to the gym, I don't see it as an obligation or a task. I see it as a reward. I love the idea of improving myself this way and the results are easy to see, even though they may take time. My workouts are a system I can continually improve and alter to my liking and it serves as a great break from studying.
Well done. Nice balance between the importance of discipline, and then making a habit of those actions. The only thing I might add is to acknowledge the why it is so difficult for some, and all of us to some degree. I think there is a strong connection between motivation and self-worth, internal locus of control, which both lead to a positive outlook, and motivation to go to the trouble of discipline. Otherwise, its "Oh, why bother?"
Guys wish me luck my board exams are coming soon...Please pray for me as prayers from anyone would always help...God Bless you if you are reading this !
I'm not sure which video I heard it in but you once said whenever there is something you need to do but don't feel like doing it, to stop and just say out loud "so what?". I've been disciplining myself to say that and happy to say WOW SICKEST MIND HACK. Its like you get a 5 sec window to get up and START doing the task. Hats off to you sir and your amazing videos!
Med School Insiders Braham kumar israni
@medschool insiders
thank you for doing this. I was struggling with a couple of things, came across your channel and your insight and wisdom has helped me solve some major situations.
I appreciate you sharing this information with the world....
thank you 💜
Med School Insiders hey man would it be okay to use some of your ideas in my ted talk? I will credit you and your youtube channel
Although yes he is intelligent for me its a baseline i mean most people are average so you dumb it down lol
"We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons."
Well said,sir
Do you know what minute he said that? I rewatched it and think I missed it ...AGAIN lol

@@curiousgurly4ever It's a quote by Jim Rohn :)
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.

Until you look at what discipline means in the dictionary. Do you mean diligence?

Thank you 💛
Hey! I'm a high school junior and I connected with and see myself in everything you just said! Keep up the great work!!
Thank you Jay for the inspiring content!
wonderful
Lucia do you have Facebook?
smoke weed everyday😂😂
I have a similar story :)
Ryan Harris ,
Yes, its called Self Compassion

I have been doing that for the past week or so. I already lost 10 pounds. I have started power walking my dog and then giving up bread, pasta, etc. which is tough, but who knew cabbage, cucumber would taste really good?
It's discipline, but it is worth it. Wish me luck for the next few pounds I will lose!
I want to stop using my phone so much and focus on studying. I also want to organize what I want to do with my life. Great video, thanks!
Omg! I started to do what he said a month ago before I watch this video and my life improved significantly! I can relate to what he said so much!! I did literally everything he said and I've become more confident and happier.
Self discipline..... I think from now on, before I leave for class I will clean my area. That will make me feel more at ease.
Raed M well said bother

Omg. Finding your channel proves to me I'm meant to reach my goal. Thank you SO much.
It might be the algorithm of your previous searches. But yea, go you!
Maybe. Lol placebo effect? Either way, it help tremendously and I'm happy.
I enjoy going to the gym so I study first and after some hours reward myself with a workout
U are a genius
I like how the gym is your reward
That's great. Good for you.

One habit that I will break is watching UA-cam or TV for more than 1 hour without doing anything. I'll at least do something like clean my room or research scholarships in between an hour of watching. This is especially hard over the summer so hopefully I can get this done!
I love when you said that a life without self control is just a life run by emotion. Powerful stuff

I'm not a med student but all of your videos have proved to be extremely beneficial for me
Growing up I wasn't taught how to be a disciplined person and it definitely wasn't a natural state of being for me.
It's really useful. Thank you for sharing that!
How to self discipline
3:00 1. Start small
3:38 2. Practice daily, no excuses (a tired workout is better than no workout)
4:37 3. Ramp up, slowly
5:18 Other tips:
5:26 Make it easier for your future self.
6:00 Build the appropriate systems (add rewards/chocolate, consequences/bill yourself)
6:43 The misconception of doing what you love : the key is grow to love the process
Thank you for this video.
you're like a calm sensei. thanks for the advice videos!
I am working on waking up earlier and going to bed sooner. Thank You for this video. Really does help.
Thank you so much...I meditate daily for at least 15min to nullify my weaknesses and strengthen my strengths
Like people who go to the gym often say the like the feeling of the pain when they lift weights etc.
yeah man u probably gotta calibrate stuff. maybe spread the biggest goals to many smaller goals?
like he said, do it then you'll begin to feel like it, and if you can't do it all do only a small part of it (not like do it all or do nothing) then when you get USED to do the small part make it a little bit bigger ;)
Star seek God, turn your life to the lord Jesus and things will pan out accordingly as to His will
If you are running out it is because you are short sighted (as all of us are without God)
Jesus is the one who actually will teach you
And will give you farsightedness
The focus of every human should be the will of God
To please God
Not ourselves
God created the world (universe) in a certain way
With moral precepts
So if we have lost touch with them or been confused about them and so don't live to them
Then things will never be right
It is only Jesus Christ who makes things right in anyone's life
Because He is the author of their lives
The son of God
It is not always easy for a person to accept this but it is up to us to choose
Just as it is not easy to accept many things a secular mind deals with in this world, making hard decisions about various financial, educational, and medical things
Having to humble oneself to something, some truth some presence..
So it is like that with God
Most people don't like that there is someone to judge morally
But these are people without a compass who do not desire one
So is much of human nature...
Everyone has a choice though
The alcoholic, the wife beater, the adulterer, the drug dealer etc etc
They can choose to keep crossing the lines and doing what is wrong and hurting others
Or they can turn to the God of mercy of morality of redemption of majesty of truth of love
The choice is everyones
All have heard the gospel of Jesus Christ to some degree
All have seen His image
All have made choices
What choice will you make?...
Star have someone to remind you daily
1. Don't let your emotions control what you do
2. Start small, Practice daily, slowly build it up
3. Love the process

I've spent two years practically living under a rock and feel like I've let so many opportunities to learn and grow pass me by.
Fry Wolf I feel u on this one... love the comment. makes me feel like im not alone
This video got me pumped! going to break my habit of going to sleep late, starting today!
I'd love to see your input on how to get out of a rut/burnout.
I need to be more appropriate in social situations im having a hard time with self discipline
Your videos has really helped me procrastinate less and be happier in general, because I reach my goals more often, Thank you so much!
my goal is drink a glass of water when I wake up every morning. starting somewhere simple
Great video and thanks.
actually watching med-school insiders is a form of motivation and a slap back to reality to me , couldn't say thank you enough Dr jubbal
Stop reading the comments and get back to work! ;)
I’m taking a bathroom break. Let me
Nicely said. I stopped. So yours is last one I read...

Awesome! Keep up the good work, I hope to someday be able to impact as many people as you do.
..
I love that line 'I will do it then I will feel like it'
I'm a violist and just found your channel. These videos are so helpful!
I hate studying Spanish but now I want to give it a try. I will start learning three words per day and my goal is to really like it by having good grades at school and start using it in my everyday life. Thank you so much for this video!
I wish i had known about your channel before
Really like Your voice and way of talking
If only i had teachers like you
I’ve always lacked self discipline, then I go into a crippling spiral on to why my life wasn’t going the way I wanted it to go.
I have a habit of starting homework and getting off task using UA-cam, Social Media, or Games. Finals are only a week away, time to stop.
Sheldon Steven
Good luck!
I have that homework problem too
Good luck
You start your homework?
Starting today, I'm not going to go to bed when there are dirty dishes left in my sink.
One habit I will begin today is to wake up make my bed and give thanks for the life I have been given. Everyday.
I'm going to set my alarm and throw my phone out the window to avoid staying on on it till 5am!
Apart from working and studing, which is hard, I realised that something I really want is to get better at playing the guitar. So I dicided to play every day even for 10 or 5 min, since then I've seen a tangible progress in my playing. Thanks for your vids, they're great.
Today I will begin to drink water with all my meals and no more sugary drinks. That's important for me.
How to control your sleeping hours?? This is one of the toughest thing to master for me. 😥
For me it was martial arts. After a few months of training and improving, I felt better at everything else in my life
having regular sport habit does help a lot :)
Who else is here because of laziness or anger issues? This video helped thank you for everything you do
my habit:
every morning im gonna drink a mini cup of an apple cider viniger.
I am not a med student, I am a business student, but this helps be so much. Thank you for this video!
Have you rewarded yourself?
happens with me as well, you acknowledge what happened though at least!
New Habit: Today, I started to keep my room tidy. 23/08/2019
after 3 months is your room tidy or did fail on that mission.
What happened?
How'd your exam go?
He failed
I'm not sure which video I heard it in but you once said whenever there is something you need to do but don't feel like doing it, to stop and just say out loud "so what?". I've been disciplining myself to say that and happy to say WOW SICKEST MIND HACK.
Its like you get a 5 sec window to get up and START doing the task.
Hats off to you sir and your amazing videos!
2:43 There's also secret option 3. "What I feel is irrelevant, I will just do it!"
