- 'On the Wings of a Nightingale' is a single by The Everly Brothers written by Paul McCartney. This was the opening song of the Everly Brothers' reunion album EB '84. It was written by Paul McCartney specifically for this album. The production is by Dave Edmunds. This single was the brothers' last hit.
This performance was recorded on 13 October 1984. Exactly on that day 'On The Wings Of A Nightingale' reached #4 in the Dutch Top 40, the highest chart position anywhere.
The Everly Brothers were an American country-influenced rock and roll duo, known for steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing. Consisting of Isaac Donald "Don" Everly (born February 1, 1937) and Phillip "Phil" Jason Everly (January 19, 1939 - January 3, 2014), the duo was raised in a musical family, first appearing on radio singing along with their father Ike Everly and mother Margaret Everly as "The Everly Family" in the 1940s. When the brothers were still in high school, they gained the attention of prominent Nashville musicians like Chet Atkins, who began to groom them for national attention.
They began writing and recording their own music in 1956, and their first hit song came in 1957, with "Bye Bye Love", written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The song hit number 1 in the spring of 1957, and additional hits would follow through 1958, many of them written by the Bryants, including "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream", and "Problems". In 1960, they signed with the major label Warner Bros. Records and recorded "Cathy's Clown", written by the brothers themselves, which was their biggest selling single. The brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961, and their output dropped off, though additional hit singles continued through 1962, with "That's Old Fashioned (That's the Way Love Should Be)" being their last top-10 hit.
In October 1984 the Everly Brothers visited the Netherlands to headline the annual Dutch television show 'AVRO's Platengala'. Their single 'On The Wings Of A Nightingale' reached its highest position of #4 in the in the Dutch Top 10 on that very day, 13 October 1984. Their album 'EB'84' was on its way to the 6th position in the Album top 100 and achieved the gold status.
This performance was taped at the Platen Gala, 13 October 1984 recorded in the Ahoy Hall, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
This is a prerecorded version. The live version has been released!

Everly brothers - the sound of my life, who else is listening to this masterpiece in 2023?
I do. Brilliant close harmony.
Waiting for the ads to finish, and then I’ll join you as a 2023 listener :). Just learned this song on my 🎸
Me
Me too!
Only got to 41in UK charts its brilliant song
Simply great! Thanks Don, Phil - and Paul McCartney.
Always Fresh and New!! Listening in 2024
A light went out forever when the Brothers were lost to the world. What a treasure they were.
I can't believe how this beautiful song couldn't be a number one hit.
Nobody, and I mean nobody ever sang better two-part harmony than Don & Phil.
There will never be another Everly Brothers. The harmonies were amazing.
RIP Phil and Don.
Why wasn’t this a bigger hit? It’s fabulous.
mysticmaverick1, they never sang it until their reunion European tour. It was written by Paul McCartney.
I suspect their more mature core audience, having heard the single, were more likely to go buy the album/CD. It has always been the way. There were "singles chart acts" and those who sell many albums over a longer time.
I wondered if EB84 was a test. It had some great music. Maybe they needed a test to see if they could work together.
I totally agree..one of my favorite songs of all time
In 1984 it couldn't become a hit
Reunited yesterday in Heaven..
Rest in Peace Phil and Don. 💖💖
This is music history at its finest. It will last as long as there are human beings around to listen to music.
it just made me bawl ...
I love this performance. It exudes so much energy and they both looked and sounded fabulous. Thank you, Paul McCartney, for writing such a great song for the brothers. What a musical legacy Don and Phil have left behind them.
Wonderful song. And wonderful performance. Only Paul could write such a great song.
And it's born out of pure love as a present for gratitude. This is so unique.
ALso thank the amazing Dave Edmunds who produced it :)
I grew up listening to this duo and was really happy when they reunited for this album and tour. This is one of Paul's best, as far as I'm concerned. RIP gentlemen- your voices are missed, greatly.
My favourite song by the everlys , Paul sure knew what he was doing when he wrote this for them because it suits them to a t, the instrumentation the great chorus vocals by Don , everything is so well done in great Everly Brothers style
Yes Paul tailor made the song for their unique style.
Wow! They still sound like they did when they were teeny boppers!
Probable not as well known as some of there great songs, but this was always my favorite, they were so good.
Written for them by Paul McCartney. Another winner.
In the beginning of The Beatles, Paul and John even named themselves after The Everly Brothers, they were their idols.
Fantastic and beautiful song. Yes the Everly Brothers were a great duo. The harmony of singing this song in one word... Fabulous
Absolutely beautiful! Perfect melody, perfect harmony!
Rest easy, Don, your music, and the legend you and your brother forged will live forever.

McCartney gave this song to them because he was a huge fan. He knew their harmonies would be perfect and they are. Well done all.

A wonderful song... this got a lot of airplay on german radio stations back in the 80´s, and it is still the most played song from the Everly Brothers over here.
I was still in the military...bought the album immediately
Takes me back to early September 1984, about to turn 23. Take me back to that time😊
Don died on the date of my wedding anniversary, what a day of rememberance, loved their music from the time of their first hit, rest in peace,God bless!!!!!
Beautiful song, when music was music
EB84, such a great, great album. So happy to know the Dutch people loved it and the boys, as well. Produced by Dave Edmunds, who, along with Nick Lowe (Rockpile), dearly loved and were influenced greatly by Don and Phil. Almost forgot to mention, Jeff Lynne offered up his help on this album. Every track, a winner. The Everly's do a remake of Dylan's Lay Lady Lay which is unforgettably beautiful....
Michael Notigan -Great album. Like your comment. This EB 84 album NEVER gets enough attention & appreciation.
This song did crack the billboard top40, so you can say it was a minor hit, i was 21 when this song came out, and i loved it, bought the album, but then again i was an oldies but goodies types of guy, besides being a total 80's dude
R.I.P. Don Everly!

Love this song. Didn't know Paul wrote this.
When this song came out I was 17. I saw the official clip of the car repair and the subsequent first drive on a German chart show called "Formel 1".
I went straight to the record store and bought the single.
That was 1984! A long time ago . . . . .
