Driver spends months fighting ticket issued when her car was 250 miles away

- Imagine getting a notice in the mail saying you had an unpaid parking ticket from a city where your car has never been. That’s what a St. Florida woman says happened to her. She has spent months calling, mailing, and faxing information, only to be pursued by a collection agency.
Sorry, but an agency that only acts when the media gets involved needs to be shut down and reformed. Completely unacceptable that things like this even happen let alone get ignored
Certainly the head should be fired and probably banned from public service.
The only way to get a response from a company or gov in 2024 is to take them to court
Then you'd have to shut down the entire government, because this is how bureaucracies function.
All that waiting around and no call backs or even being able to speak to someone over the phone is all deliberate.
Houston Texas Police treated me the same way. I filled out all kinds of paperwork online and nothing.
If HPD ever needs help from me, or needs a witness to their favor, I will deny I witnessed anything.
When a crime against me is ignored, I won't help the people who don't want to waste their time even going after the criminal.
Legalised organised crime.
A typo is a crime now? Get real.
@@cardrivingdude It is crime when the government refuses to take responsibility for their fuck up.
Do you think the government would let you get away with a typo on your tax return?
Hell no.
They would wrack your ass in a heartbeat and you know it.

It's disturbing how many people suggest a law suit...It's sort of stupid and ignorant...IT COSTS MONEY TO HIRE A LAWYER...IT'S ONLY 154 DOLLARS! Are you really this dim?
@@godbluffvdgg- Are you so dim as to not realize that she’s spent all this time trying to get the situation corrected out of the principle of not paying a fine for something she did not do? I’m sure if you asked her she would say that just looking at it monetarily, it was not worth all the time she had spent. Luckily for us, people fight injustices out of the principle of not letting the government get away with wrongs on the people they are supposed to serve, rather than just fighting something based on its monetary value to them personally.

No customer service from government agencies.
I suspect that everything is outsourced to private companies and no human ever touches any of it. Government gets their cut and the businesses just want to maximise their profits.
Until the government agency sees themselves on the evening news! Then things are fixed in no time. Right?
This is what happens government agencies when don’t have proper resources and staffing. I notice this is Florida, which is one of the worst run states.
She should check her credit report. The collection agency has no motivation to fix the issue unless they get sued for false or incorrect informaton.
Quit using credit and it won't matter.
@@USMC6976 Using the credit system for your advantage can save you thousands of dollars.
@@USMC6976
It matters in all sorts of things other than credit. Her car insurance rates are but one of those things. Whether you can get electricity turned on if and when you move is another.
@@ralfie8801 No it doesn't. It matters if you want to borrow money to do those things.
Find you a new insurance company. No debt = no FICO score. They may use your payment history, do you pay on time, but most will not use a score. Don't borrow money, you never have a problem with having a poor payment history.
My caregiver received one like this. She faxed her alibi (timecard) that verified by the state of oregon. Then she requested discovery for the video they claim they had. It turned out they said it was an old pickup and she drove a newer sedan. This is a form of fundraising. They called it a mistake, I call it shady.
Make collection companies legally responsible for the validity of the debt.
They are actually responsible for verifying the debt. They must verify the debt before they can continue to try to collect. If you claim that the debt isn’t yours, they must prove that it is. Many debt collectors skip this step and try to illegally collect the debt.
ALL STATES need to have people instead of automated responses.
Without outsourcing the call centers.....
It's been going on for decades. You can't change it. You'll pay the salaries of customer service?
The problem is not the faulty ticket. Mistakes happen. The problem is that they have no customer service at all.
Exactly. I had something similar happen about 15 years ago where someone had written a ticket against my license number but a totally different car description. Fortunately, they had actual people working in the office then and they quickly looked at the ticket, looked up the registration for the plate, recognized that someone had written the plate number wrong and cleared the whole thing. Nowadays, you go through automated menus and long hold times and may never be able to talk to a real person.
How many innocent people have pled guilty to crimes they didnt commit *just because it was easier/cheaper than fighting the false charges???*
They knew it was the wrong car. Their continued pursuit of the money is extortion. She should contact her local DA and have criminal charges brought.
it happened to me too
I got a letter re: an accident I was supposedly involved, in a city in Florida, that I had never visited. The car they said I was driving was a 2000’ish Black Nissan Maxima. First of all I’ve never driven a Nissan Maxima, nor have I ever driven a black car, I had not been in a an accident the year before & I had never even driven thru the mentioned city. I was 300 miles away. The traffic officers handwriting was so bad that the Tag number was put in the computer wrong. Nearly had to get a lawyer.
When I was still in college I received a parking ticket for my car when it was at the mechanic’s getting fixed. The college played stupid about it, but eventually dropped it. Not sure what happened to the liars working for the college writing false parking tickets directly from the information on file.
The college was Thaddeus Steven’s.
Dismissed without explanation is a huge part of the problem. The court should force them to explain why the continued to try and extort money from this lady long after they knew she was innocent.
I had the same thing, got a parking ticket in Oak Park, Illinois. I was still in highschool at the time. It was issued on a school day. I had to write a letter stating that I was in school at the time. I lived about two hours away from Oak Park.
Imagine wanting the government to do what is right?!
Sending it to collections was gone deliberately what a bunch of jerks.
I'm getting pa turnpike tolls forwarded to me for tolls on a vehicle i don't own, didn't register, don't have insurance on, sent to an address i never lived at.
Took it all the way to a senator's office and now currently awaiting a resolution.
As far as i know my license has been suspended for 6 months now.
Everytime i leave the house i have to make sure i have commissary money on me in case i get pucked up and jailed, also I'm approaching 70 yrs old now.
This happened to me years ago - I got a parking ticket in the mail for San Francisco and my car while I owned it never been there. The closest I have gotten to San Fran is the Grape Vine going to Magic Mountain. I sent a picture of my car showing that it was a turquoise Datsun with very oxidized paint illustrating that it likely had never been orange as was on the ticket and where I was the day the ticket was given - basically my class schedule and if needed I could send a signed note from the teacher I was there since it was a test day. The agency cancelled the ticket. And this was when most of us didn't have computers let alone cell phones and GPS on our vehicles. Since they listed a Ford then it definitely is not her car. This should be easy for her to prove nowadays, easier then when I had the problem.
If she sues them, they will pay attention.
They could care less.
If they get sued the taxpayers pay it. Why would they care?

Even if you win then you have to pay court fees. Some courts charge $150-350.
@@richardgibson2158 That's to discourage people from contesting tickets that should never have been issued., They'll get your money one way or another.

GROSS INCOMPETENCE in government! Taxpayers are being abused when they have to pay taxes to pay the salaries of government employees who will ignore the taxpayers when they need help. If those in charge aren't willing to establish and require Standards, Ethics, Scruples, Integrity, Honor, and Honesty within government, then they need to quit or be fired! Government is underperforming while being overpaid and over staffed!
My friend once had his driver's license suspended for not having insurance on a car he hadn't owned for 5 years. Rather than go through a pile of paperwork because of someone at the BMV making a mistake, he paid a $5 fee. This was in Virginia.
The collection agency might have bought the debt for pennies on the dollar, and will continue to try to collect until the dinosaurs return. Her problems may not be over.
They'll resell the debt as valid debt to someone else within the week.
Oh it gets worse. She'll contact the collection agency proving the debt is illegitimate (ticket was for a Ford, car with the license place is a Prius). So they'll resell the debt to another collection agency. Which will call her, and she'll have to prove again that it's not her car. And they will resell the debt to another collection agency. Repeat. I went through this for 5 years when Verizon screwed up (they were crediting my payments to a different account), and sent my "debt" to collections.
@@solandri69 Yep. This sucks. I've been through it. I gave up and paid the collection agency money I didn't owe to put an end to it, even though I didn't want to. I just gave in. Fortunately it was a small amount.
I resolved similar situation when I pointed out that make and model of ticketed vehicle were not same as registered for that license plate. Obviously they had made a mistake in writing down license plate. My vehicle had never been close to that city.
Thats how crazy the world is !!!
I bet she is not the only one.
Plead not guilty. Go to court. If they persist wait until they arrest you and file a false arrest lawsuit and get paid. Its simple.
Filing lawsuits, going to court and getting arrested aren’t simple. lol. You’re gonna get a record that you have to fight to get expunged too.
Uhhhhhhh Probably have to go to court where ticketed too, that's 250 miles away.
It's not a false arrest if there is a ticket that is involved. You go to court and fight it. You provide the evidence when you show up.
@@werefrogofassyria6609 It's a false arrest if there's zero probable cause due to not even checking the car matches the plate.
It sounds like by the time she realized that the ticket existed, it was already past any type of court date for it.
Perhaps we need minimum reading and writing comprehension testing for parking enforcement? Is that yet another department where you get in because of who you know, not what you're qualified to do?
I wouldn't take the word of that sorry local office rep that the collection agency would be contacted and the matter considered resolved on their end. I had the exact same scenario a few years ago, all caused by an employee's inability to correctly transfer numbers on a tag in a photo to a database.
Geez- That’s s worse than Minneapolis.
I sold my 2006 ford taurus last year. Recently a few weeks ago the owner that I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM tells me he got a parking ticket in Newark NJ!!!!!!!! It doesent have mine or his plates on the car at all!!!!!! Go figure the criminality behind it.
Characters showing from the license plate during the last few seconds of the video. Nice dig. 😂
NJ has "Ticket Mills" that generate Parking Tickets for people. My Sister received one. Didn't know it until she was notified for an Appear in Court or Warrant issued. The Town said my sister owned a Black Nissan 2 door. My sister owned a 4 door, Chev Celebrity in Grey. My sister was working at Joint Base MDL at the time the ticket was issued. The town was 50 miles away. I contacted Chris Christies(NJ Gov at time). They sent it to the Essex County Prosecutors Office. Then the Ticket was Dismissed. The Prosecutor tried blaming it on maybe a License Digit was wrong. Wrong, Color, Make and Model car.
Yeah there is some weird shit going on in Florida. Just a few years ago I received a toll violation in the mail stating that I owed $25.00. They even sent a picture of the vehicle with the fine. When I looked at the picture I could not help but laugh my ass off as it was a picture of a silver car. I have never owned a car in my life I have always owned trucks and at the timestamp of the violation I was well over 300 miles away working. I did the same thing the lady did in this story I reached out to Sunpass and explained that they sent this fine to the wrong person and that I never owned a silver car in my life. I never heard back from them for a long time. After getting a little paranoid about the situation I went to my local State patrol office and informed them of what was going on. They advised me that I should get a replacement tag so I did and reported the situation to my county tag office as well. When they heard about what happened and giving them all the documentation I got my tag replaced for free. Asfor the fine I received Sunpass did finally acknowledge that they sent the fine in error and cleared it out of there system.
There are very few scissors that can cut through bureaucratic red tape. :/
When you resort to FAXing... you know you're out of luck.
DeSatan's artificial intelligence hard at woke.
Clearly the person that wrote the ticket got the numbers/ letters wrong. That person should be held accountable.
I wonder if the plate was from a different State.

While working for a hospital in northern NY. We received a ticket for one of our courier vans in NY city. Having never drove that far south we fought the ticket. Eventually a pic of the license arrived at our office. In the pic was the same digits, but on a PA plate. The ticket was finally dismissed.
In Finland when they write a parking ticket they always take a photo of the car and the plate, the ticket is not valid without those photos, if car owner say he/she didn't do it, he/she can ask to see the photos.
I bought a used truck from a lady and in Oklahoma, we have to take our plate off when we sell a vehicle. So I had my license plate from my old car. One day I received a ticket for a parking violation in a town 150 miles away. They went by the truck VIN number, not the plate. It was easy to fix because the ticket was given before I bought the truck. Only because I had a bill of sale.
LOL @ the A55 license plate at the end of the story.
"Pics, or it didn't happen."
You didn't see the pics on the thumbnail.
Miami beach has a huge problem with their traffic and parking enforcement. My daughter was issued a parking citation because the meter maid read the time of purchase as the expiration date time we sent them several request with the parking receipt that the cop had written the ticket from and they just did not care. I believe they intentionally write tickets to out of towners knowing they would just pay rather than return to the city even if the citation were fictitious yes Crooked.
This is what happens when the bureaucracy forgets they work FOR the people. People need to pay more attention to their local governments and hold them accountable.
This what happens when AI and automation does the work that humans should. You can't explain or argue things with a computer
She is a very beautiful lady
I got a ticket in the mail for passing a stopped school bus 85 miles away from my house and the ticket was on my 1946 jeep I had to go to court take off work just to keep the points off my license the vehicle that did it was a newer car that had a tag number one letter different than mine
Bet she was a looker 30 years ago
Collection agencies are relentless and will come after her and the reason the ticket shows as $0 at Miami Dade parking is because the ticket amount is now in the hands of the collections agency and it will not be cleared because of a loop hole in the system that allows the collection agency to pursue her for any amount they want including interest. She should contact the collection agency and make sure they were notified by Miami Dade that the amount owed was in fact cancelled otherwise they will continue to harass her.... indefinitely until they sell the debt to another collection agency.
Government extortion.
Frustrating!! I got a parking ticket time stamped 12:33. Except I had my parking pass time stamped 12:32. I took photos of each and emailed the parking company asking the ticket be deleted. They deleted it within 2 days….🤷♂️
This is why people despise government.
Happened to me in California. Ticket from a town quite a distance away. I have a unique personalized plate that they claimed was parked at the town, but on looking in to it further the vehicle type didn't match my vehicle. I sent pictures of my vehicle, also had proof I was at an appointment earlier in the day and there was no way I could have driven to that town in time to park my car there. It was quite a pain and took months, but eventually I got it resolved.
They definitely try to make it so hard to fight that most people give up. Online only forms, phone numbers with auto attendants that go no where, etc.
need a new lawyer
Ironically, I received a (poorly written) text message that says I owe money for unpaid tolls. Odd, given that there are no toll roads or bridges anywhere near where I live. (Yeah, its a scam.)
Had the same thing happen to me. Had to have HR at the place I worked give me a copy of my electronic timecard so I could prove I was at work on the day and time of the ticket.
About fifty years ago, after eating lunch in a cafe in a small Florida town, I emerged to find an official parking ticket inserted under my windshield wiper. There was no indication on the street that I could not park there AND they had mis-recorded my license plate number on the ticket, so I just krinkled it up and drove away. Now I'm left wondering if some poor schlub with that other license number is rotting away in a Florida prison...
They don't typically send you to prison for parking tickets. They sell the ticket debt to collection agencies, and if the tickets aren't paid, it can ruin a person's credit. It can also make it difficult to register other automobiles, renew a person's drivers license, get auto insurance, etc.
Be careful. That could be a scam.
The same thing happened to me, I was station in Okinawa Japan with the Air Force when I got a mail from a collection agency about a ticket in Miami. I did not pay thought it was a scam and ignored it
No customer service at all? Whre is the human? Do we pay taxes for this??
NEVER settle a debt with a collection agency
Similar thing happened to me. I received a speed camera ticket for a time when my car was parked in a shopping center while we had lunch. I then got another one issued for a half hour later and 60 miles away from the first one. To get to that one from the shopping centre I was parked at I would had to drive my little 1100cc commuter car at over 200 mph. My car is a very popular model in a very popular colour so in the photos it looked like my car, except for some windscreen stickers. It was clearly a case of cloned plates. I managed to argue it down to paying only one fine.

I'm pretty sure that isn't his name.
Can they be sued for the distress they cause?
Best chance to get things untangled is often with the collection agency. I had a similar bill attempt with a web hosting site who's policy was to bill you for the year ahead. A late payment would get your site shut down until paid. I closed my site and notified them but 5 years later received a bill for "unpaid service." After time they sent their unpaid claim to collections and after explaining the problem to them (exactly as I had to the web hosting site) they said they would take care of it and not to worry. It's been two more years since and nothing ever came of it.
Florida relies largely on traffic cams for handing out tickets, most of em are bogus but options are limited against this corrupt system.
Had the exact same thing happen to me. An inept clerk misidentified a photo ticket of a red sedan in a city I've never been in and attached it to my green jeep. I ignored it. In Arizona, unless they serve the ticket in person, it is not enforceable.
Can you point me to a credible source that says you don't have to pay a photo ticket, if it wasn't served in person? So far everything I've found says you do.
leave it to the government to screw things up
I once got a ticket for "Not stopping at a stop sign long enough".
I tried to argue that the officer implied I had stopped, just not as long as he would have liked, but the judge wasn't having any of it.
The judge asked if I was questioning the accuracy of a police officers observation.
I said I was. The judge told me that this was what was wrong with youth now-a-days.
I suggested I could prove the officer's head wasn't in the game, that his game day face had not been on.
The judge said he would indulge my attempt to slander the officers abilities, but also stated he doubted I could prove anything.
I said "The ticket was issued for September 31st"
And the judge just looked at me, and more wasn't forth coming, asked if that was some sort of day tickets cannot be issued?
I asked the judge to find that date on any calendar, because I was sure it didn't exist.
The judge frowned, looked at a calendar and then said "Apparently September 31st IS a day when tickets cannot be issued."
The wheels of progress only work when there is money to collect.
The reason there are not more stories like this? Well that is because most people do not have a voice.
What is going on with sunpass? Do they have someone working there that is pocketing money? This make no sense.
This happened to me years ago in New Jersey
Law enforcement is notorious for writing down the wrong information on tickets. So much so that when I worked at our local court, we had to dismiss almost 20% of all tickets written for inaccuracies. Check your tickets before you do anything!
I like how this is everyone else’s fault except the incompetent morons not being able to change around a few numbers in a system
Get a sunpass. I had this exact issue and called Sunpass. Resolved in 10 minutes. Also worked when our plate was stolen
Description of the video is lacking the 'Petersburg' part. As it says a "St. Florida woman"
In a lot of jurisdictions you can go to the police station or court house if you’re in a similar situation. If you have electronic proof, it makes it easier.
This happens more than you think. I was deployed in Afghanistan and received a notice like that. I called and showed that my vehicle was locked in a secure parking area on base. It still took me months to finally resolve it.
SUE everyone involved. Her credit has already been tainted given that the collection agency bought that debt.
Like see how those officers take or dont take accountability. 😂
Isn't there a harassment suit in all of this?
this is just sad to see some people stealing plate numbers just to get away with crimes and in this case an elderly lady was the target this is just messed up i hope she comes out ok and i hope the thief is put behind bars
Possibly not stolen: Could be they read or wrote the wrong numbers or letters on plate or it could be that it was the right numbers and letters but from a different State.
This lady should send an account to the department for professional investigation services for her time doing their jobs and cross referencing the ticket time and ma,e of car when they try and dispute the claim put them on hold and when they refuse to pay start bankruptcy proceedings against St them automatically freezing the departments assets
That’s just the problem with these stupid American automated phone systems. There is never anyone to answer your call. To do this. Press 1 To do that press 2 To the other press 3. Once you have selected an option. Then up comes another 10 options. And so on it goes. Truth of the matter is there is nobody to then answer your phone call. These automated phone systems want scrapping. We need operators to take our calls.
Courts don't care about the errors they make.
You can't fight city hall!
Exactly the same thing happened to me in NH years ago. Thankfully I was off with the kids at Bible School in another state. All it took was a phone call to settle it. Turned out it was same plate # but another state vehicle. The above story is just stupid.
Once the AI overlords take over, resistance will be futile . . .
There is no reason in today's technological situation for a parking ticket to go without photo/video evidence. A picture of the rear of the vehicle will accurately show the license plate, state of registration, vehicle color, make and model. If done well, it can also show location -- street address, business name, other means of identification. The camera or phone will also automatically record time, date, and location. Why are we depending on known deceivers for such information?
