Bad advice: please do not ask me for a letter of recommendation 10 days before a Dec. 1 deadline and expect me to be able to pull it off. Set yourself and your recommenders up for success by applying early. Meet with us to discuss where you are applying, why you are applying to these schools, share your draft essay, and give us a month on letter requests. We are busy people and students don’t realize it but many of you ask the same groups of us to write letters. Many deadlines fall in the same timeframe around the holidays and finals so be considerate.
I completely agree! I must have not made myself clear in this video - I made meetings with my professors in September as soon as the quarter started to ask them to write my letters. I shared my transcripts, SOP, and CV. It was them who said don't sent them the links until closer to the deadline! But I completely agree, asking someone to write a letter of rec last minute is not going to end well
Thank you. I about had a heart attack because I already asked for them. I finished online but had a gap due to an illness. Trying to find professors who might remember me after 4 years away, I figured I needed to give them time.
I personally sent all of my LOR links as soon as I opened my applications back in September, and I'm so glad I did! Typically, you aren't the only student a professor is writing a letter for, so waiting to send them the link 2 weeks out really isn't a ton of time. One professor took about a month and a half to write mine because she had to write 7 other ones, so give yourself (and them) plenty of time to get things done without having to rush
I agree. I sent the links around late September/early October (ie around the same time I asked my professors to write the letters.) This made it easier for me to keep track of everything (I could see who had and hadn't filled out the letter yet,) and it meant they could fill out the form whenever they were ready!
The biggest mistake I made was underestimating myself. I applied to any and all schools then got in to some and I was like darn I wish I’d gone for more schools closer to me. I might have gotten in.
Applying to graduate school is so STRESSFUL! I'm starting my program soon and I'm a bit nervous but talking about it and getting advice from people who have some experience is SUPER helpful! I wish I found this video before I applied! This is a great video with great information! Love your hat by the way!
This was great! I am looking at grad schools as well and it was nice to hear from someone who got in and also made mistakes/or wish they knew things. You are awesome Olivia.
As far as the interview process, the school that I'm interested in going to doesn't have one. I just have to submit the usual...transcripts, letters of recommendation, statement of goals and resume. But if for any reason I do have an interview, one of the main reasons I chose the school is because it has the cheapest tuition but I don't want to sound like an ass lol My cousin and good friend also went to this school and they enjoyed their time there, plus it's in a city I'm interested in living long term. I'll just do more research like you said in the video. Thanks for all of the great info!
haha I think affordability and living a comfortable life without going into mountains of debt is a totally legitimate reason for choosing a school!! Best of luck!
I love this video!!! we have the same interest, planning to take my Masters - Industrial Organization Psychology! with your inputs, I am very adamant that the university will consider. Writing my letter of intent now. Thank you for this awesome video.
I just found out that I was in the wrong program for what I wanted to do, a whole year after getting accepted. Now I’m having to figure out what I’m gonna do and have to go through the whole application process again for this program I should’ve applied for a year ago. Really wish someone caught that before I applied, but it was also on me for not looking through the program in the first place. Just hope I get accepted into this new one
I am just a bit worried because I'm not sure when will I be able to apply for MS and by the time probably some of my BA professors wont even remember me.
Will you have managers at work that can write you a letter? If you're close / talk to your BA professors and explain it will probably be a few years before you apply, they might say "that's fine, let me know when you do apply and I'll write you a letter."
Keep in contact. I’m still in my undergrad, but when I really connect with a professor, I continue to talk to them after I’m done with their class(es). Since I’m a humanities major, that means I’m keeping up by emailing asking if they’ve read anything compelling recently, and then I read it and later pop into their office hours to chat about it. You can modify this for whatever you study, by asking for articles or research papers they’ve read recently and asking questions via email.
Thanks for the video again! I have some limited work experiences with short-term leave, but does psychology graduate school evaluate prospective students based on their previous work experiences?
The application for graduate schools are out for Fall 2021 term. I was like yes early and I emailed my professor's and got letter of recommendations from them already. 💘
Thanks for this video. It was so helpful! I didn't know several of these things, and would have unintentionally made silly mistakes that now I might not! Thanks!!
I'm so glad you found it to be helpful! I've definitely been learning through making mistakes CONSTANTLY so my failure can help someone else do better, I'm happy 😂
I know it's been a while since you made this but if you see this, is contacting programs you have interest in a year or more in advance a bad move or is opening up that communication a good thing?
Hi Olvia I am researching grad schools as I will be applying next fall but I did not know how many to apply to. How many did you apply to and also if you know other people in grad school how many did they apply to? thanks in advance :)
It really just depends! I applied to 4 media effects programs and 2 I/O psychology programs. I know some people who applied for more and some who applied for less! It really depends!
Hi Olivia...Can my dean of student and my school administrators write my letter of recommendation for me? Because i graduated 2 years ago and I’m not in contact with most of my professors...
@@oliviasimonephd I mean, like how can someone have class at a building that is 20 minutes away if they only have 10 minutes between classes? You'd always be 10 minutes late to that class! Most undergrad universities will schedule things such that this never occurs. It was just a little math error as you spoke. It made me laugh :) Awesome videos, nevertheless. I appreciate your advice and silliness (like in 6:47).
@@2fbDJLL Not a mistake - At UC Davis they would give 10 minutes to get to class; there were many times when I'd be late because I couldn't walk to a class that quickly

That,s the reason,in my country we encourage students to take hard copies of LORs ,scan them and send to universities themselves.
Thank you. I about had a heart attack because I already asked for them. I finished online but had a gap due to an illness. Trying to find professors who might remember me after 4 years away, I figured I needed to give them time.

I give my professor two months to write my LORs
Thank you for allowing us to do right by you which only happens if you give us the time and the information we need to do our job
So you guys sent it 10 months before BE graduation?

Aw dang :/ I guess you have to trust you ended up where you're meant to be! Wise words though for those applying

You have any advice for taking the GRE? I applied to grad school last year and was rejected for my low GRE score. I plan to apply again this year.
I actually made a video on it! Here's the link! ua-cam.com/video/eTHztgKX-3M/v-deo.html

It depends on the school! Typically December
Or January

I don't understand why Penn State will go above and beyond to do social media check in all this other stuff. it's not like their Ivy League
Most employers will do this for potential candidates
This is awesome, just subscribed! I just uploaded a similar video and also make grad school related videos, in case anyone wants another perspective!
Good to know, thanks for sharing!
You’re soo funny!
haha thanks!
how to apply in grad school? Im from Philippines.
I'm not sure how to apply when you're not from here! I definitely recommend checking out the school's websites and contacting them :)
