I'm finishing my last 2 semesters in Marriage and Family Therapy at Our Lady of The Lake University - Houston Campus. I am currently at an internship that offers a nice stipend for 6 months at the VA Medical Center. Also, I'm a first-generation college student as well! Our classes are held every other Saturday from 8-5 and during the second semester, we have an additional 4-hour practicum course (on a day that you chose). My program matches us to internships just as med schools do. I've already taken and passed my national licensing exam. I have truly enjoyed my journey!
That’s awesome!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it and I’m sure others will find it super helpful. Really happy you’ve had a great experience! 👏🏽🎉
@iAmPrincess that's amazing! I am planning to attend fall 24. Any tips or advice? Pros or cons?
I wanted to get my masters from their :,) but sadly my GPA is not high enough , I was so upset , that could be a con watch ur GPA
Looking into their online program for this first year in Austin community college online have about a year before transferring. Glad you like it and I am also wanting to start at the VA.
So helpful!!! Thank you!
It made me feel a lot better knowing graduate school is literally a journey of emotions and literally emotions of highs and lows like you mentioned it being like a rollercoaster and how you do miss out on things and the grief and sacrifices. I felt like I was the only one. Always enjoy your videos girl💕 sorry been so busy! But I’m catching up on your videos!!
Thanks girl! The grief and recovery period post grad is definitely not talked about enough, that’s why I’ve always appreciated how you’ve shared your grad school journey because literally me. 😭🤎 the amount of times I ugly cried and needed pep talks because of grad school, like it got done because it was necessary for what I wanted to do but so relieved and happy that period of my life is over. I know how busy it can be so you do not have to apologize, so grateful you watch when you can, appreciate all the support.🤎🥹
Just from watching and listening to you I can tell you’ll be an amazing counselor! You are so warm and generous, so lovely. Good luck!
I found all of the tips very helpful! Thank you!
Thank you for this information! So many months of reading through Reddit and you just gave me the info I needed!
Thank you for mentioning the liability insurance, it crossed my mind but not as something I needed while in school. Loved your video, thank you for all the info and tips!
Wasup Deyanira. Thank you so much for your video! I'm transferring to a 4 year next year with the hopes of getting into a master's program. Thank you soooo much, again. I really appreciate your video. First generation as well and I know the struggle of paving the way for ones self. I am grateful to come across resources as your video! This needs a million views.
Thank you for the tips. You are so calming, I guess you are going to be such a good therapist.
such a great video! you are lovely
Great video!❤️ thank you for this information
Thank you so much!😊
Thank you for sharing your story, you are a beautiful person! I’m doing research on which route should I go to be a counselor. I’m nervous about mathematics and researching data stuff. At this time, I am mostly interested in MFT, I’m still trying to figure out if LMFT the best role for me. 😊❤ it’s also hard to choose an online program for the best!
Thank you for making this video! This is so helpful and informative 😊👏
I’m so glad it was helpful! Thank you🥹
Hello, I am a future therapist looking for guidance 🤞🏾 and Im so happy i stumbled on ur page . Excited to follow your journey on multiple platforms 💓
thank you for this! i needed to hear that it could get overwhelming but you can come out of it lol,, I'm barely starting and I'm scared of practicum and internship, but I'm praying it goes as smoothly as it can. i hope you're doing good :)
Wishing you the best when it comes to practicum and internship, you’re going to do great and learn so much.😊 It’s nerve-racking but also so great to be able to apply and try the things you’ve learned and make connections with clients.🎉👏🏽 Thank you for watching!
Can’t remember which video but I truly appreciate you mentioning how lonely and isolating the LCMHCA application process can feel. As well as you discussing abandoning a lot of the “therapy jargon” to come across more authentic to clients. Learning a lot from you. ❤️❤️
I'm so glad I found your channel. I'm about to start my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health, and I have so many questions about the internship/practicum and supervision after graduation. Those questions don't seem to get a full answer from anyone. I want a full picture, but the clarity isn't always there.
So happy you’re here! Congratulations on starting your masters program! If you’re not already definitely go follow Lanicia’s channel because she’s vlogged her grad school journey and really talks about practicum and internship.

Thank you!
My classes (CMHC) is online so the flexibility is there. I do my classes in the day, however, it is work!! Full time for sure.
This is very helpful! I also only applied to one program and thank GODDD I got in lol.
Aww yay! We were both living dangerously lol😂🎉
I’m currently entering my final year of my MSW degree. Group projects are the worst and don’t get me started on role plays, lol. They are so awkward. I’m grateful that I got to do a paid internship through my current employer. I’m at Portland State.
Thanks for sharing 🥰
Im a new grad student at Liberty Unviversity. I want to say this video was so helpful to the tips and especially the steps to pursuing licensure. Thanks for sharing😊✨️
How was your experience there? I'm currently looking into their online program and I've submitted an application.
Thank you. I just applied to grad school. Just trying to mentally prepare.
Congratulations!! 🎉🎉 And yes I hear you, mindset is so important. Cheering you on👏🏼🎉
Thanks for the video. Very informative. How much should we expect to pay for insurance during the practicum and internship?
Hi! Your video was so helpful thank you for sharing. I want to apply for a masters in mental health counseling, but I have my bachelor’s degree in something unrelated. I’m not really sure how to get my foot in the door in terms of experience before applying to some programs. Do you have any tips or recommendations?
This is such good information! Thank you. I was just accepted into an intensive program and even though I'm in Canada this will help me plan 😊
Speaking of group projects, do you have any tips for helping them go smoothly? I personally love collaboration, but so many don't, or are willing to take a backseat and I find it hard to connect with them
Thank you so much! Fast forwarding to know I love collaborating and group projects because me and those who I’m collaborating with get to choose eachother because we work well together so that’s something great to keep in mind and look forward to. But because we don’t always get that in school I would say the best we can do is make sure you get eachothers contact info on day 1, check in regularly to ask how things are going or if anyone needs help, and be understanding that not everyone can spend a lot of time meeting in person so assign tasks strategically so that those who can’t have other options. I think regardless of how well we plan we still have no control of what others choose to do but the best we can do is be clear about what and when things need to be done. I hope this helps, thank you for being here and for your question.😊
Hello, thankyou for this wonderful video I am planning to apply for masters program in Texas and this video really helps. Wanted to know which programs are good here. Also is there any mental health facility or any private counselors that you know of where I can work or even shadow while I prepare and attend this counseling program..I am new to Texas moved from California
I'm just beginning my journey on becoming a sex therapist, so I'm still trying to figure out where to start and what what steps I need to take.
Thank you so much for all of your wisdom and experience!
❤ From Washington State!
Same here! If you were able to figure it out, would love to hear your experience
@@vaneskasalas of course! 😊
I enjoyed your video. Question: Were there any nurses in your counseling program? I ask because I have been a nurse for 30 years and I am over it and burned out, and I feel that counseling is my true calling, and it matches my personality type. I feel counseling would be a better fit for than nursing ever was.
I'm no expert here, but I would see if any nursing programs offer similar credentials such as a Nurse Practitioner in mental health. The nursing profession is one of the strongest "unions" around.
What made you choose the LPC over the other mental health paths? Thanks!
I’m at Portland State in Portland, OR! The classes are definitely in the evening, and there’s def the expectation that you will have an unpaid internship which suckssss. I’m also first gen and will end up with over six figures of debt (and it’s the cheapest university for this program in Oregon
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, really appreciate it! So glad you’re here😊 And omg the debt *clutches chest and cries in spanish*😭
I am currently in the application process for grad school-clinical mental health counseling; I am struggling writing my personal statement, do you have any helpful tips?
Congratulations!!🎉🎉 What helped me was first seperatly writing in my own words why I wanted this specific program, why I wanted to be a therapist (or whatever you see yourself pursuing), and how this program would help me achieve that. Putting it in my own words first without overthinking then I picked the portions I wanted to use for my statement and expanded on them. I know it can be overwhelming, so I hope this helps😊
Be careful on where your your degree will be accepted.
