Kenny Rogers' voice was amazing. He could sing and make it sound like he was crying. Dolly has that talent too and the two of them together is pure magic.
Also Lionel was at his funeral and it was so emotional! They were great friends. And when they told the story of writing this together was so hilarious!
All women melted to this song. Love watching younger women today react to the music my generation had when there were real love songs sung by real voices. They still have the same reactions we did. So glad I grew up to 60’s and 70’s music, the best of all time and real talent in all kinds of genres and we listened and loved them all. No auto tune, real talent and real voices that touched your soul.
Both my grandparents passed within the past year or so. They were 98 and 102. She called him home on their anniversary. I don’t think she could be up there without him. Anyways, they still had the old rack stereo system and she would play this song on record soooo loud, for years. We’d all be running around outside at their farm as kids and adults and when we heard it, we’d run and watch them dance to it thru the windows. And now I’m bawling. One of the best memories I’ve ever been given was them doing that. Side note: my Gpa’s name was Erv, too.
SO MANY WERE IN LOVE.. WHEN IT WAS PLAYED ON THE JUKE BOX, THAT SPECIAL GUY THAT YOU LOCKED EYES WITH, WOULD COME AND ASK YOU CAN I HAVE THIS DANCE... THOSE DAYS ARE GONE😢
Kenny Rogers started out as a folk/rock / coubtry singer with a group called The First Edition. His first major hit with then was Ruby Don't Take Your Loce To Town. Kenny Rogers was a brilliant talent
Love this song. Lionel also recorded it later. You need to show your friend Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton islands in the stream (written by the Bee Gees). ❤
Love what you call the classics. They are what I grew up knowing as music. No autotune straight from the artist voice is what you hear. Lionel Richie stayed at Kenny Roger's guest house for a time when he needed help. They had a very strong friendship that lasted the whole of Kenny's life. So many loved him, he was just a stand up guy. We call the music we had as pure natural talent. Either you had it or you didn't.
I love it when reactors get that incredulous look on their face when they realize there is no autotune used, or needed. The artists from our era, the ones we grew up with, did have pure talent and gave us music from their heart and soul. Sadly, that talent has been lost and today we are left with hollow, soulless noise.
I'm a baby boomer grew up in the '60s and '70s and Kenny Rogers when he broke away from his group Kenny Rogers and the first edition in my day he only got better He's one of the best all time❤
Oh dang, He's wearing the same suit I thought this was going to be the one where he calls Lionel Richie out of the audience and talks to him about how he wrote that song and the fact that he was in the bathroom when he did it oh you got to look up that version it's the version where he calls Lionel Richie up on the stage and they sing together and they hug each other it's really very touching...
I hope you can recall the name of that show so he can pull it up.This could be it but they left that part out.was it the Kenny Rogers show? Or the show honoring Kenny Rogers? I do know Kenny does a short time later.@@MsRhodeman
When my Parents renewed their Vows This was sung at their wedding , I was the ring bearer and my little sister was the flower girl .. Dads friend Chevy sang this at their ceremony. Dad dressed in his Dress Blues.
I absolutely LOVE how towards the end of the song, both of you stopped moving in anticipation of what he was going to sing next. That's the kind of music that touches people! You literally hold your breath waiting for them to finish the song. That's when you know it's good!
It almost pissed me off at first too, then I realized that their reactions were more incredulous than anything else. They just seemed amazed that Kenny Rogers could get those vocal effects simply by manipulating the microphone.
You should react to his song "She Believes In Me" if I remember correctly that was the song where he found his niche as a power ballad singer and helped jump star his career at a point where he considered giving up. As a singer and artist, I think you would hear some of your own journey mirrored in this song
Please, please, Pretty please listen to Kenny Roger's & The First Edition "Just Dropped In (to see what condition my condition was in." It's one of his earliest hit, back when he was more of a rocker. ❤❤❤
So interesting, your guest sounds a lot like Lavar Burton, nice speaking voice. Love this song by Lionel, and I know it made him proud to share it with Kenny. Thanks B.P. 👍💕
Perfect reaction. That cowboy hat goes well with that sweater. Lionel Richie wrote the perfect song for Kenny Roger's vocal range. And when I saw this back then, I was glad he mentioned the writer of the song before singing it. It takes a real gentleman to do that.
Kenny's gravel and whisper vocals were his signature. His songs were legend. If you want to see a younger and more "hip" Kenny -- please listen to him singing "Tell It All Brother" with his group The First Edition. They had other great hits with "Reuben James," "Ruby (Don't Take Your Love To Town)," and "But You Know I Love You." He really was a treasure.
In the late 1950s, Kenny Rogers began his recording career with the Houston-based group the Scholars, who first released "The Poor Little Doggie". After some solo releases, including 1958's "That Crazy Feeling", Rogers then joined a group with the jazz singer Bobby Doyle. In 1966, he became a member of the folk ensemble the New Christy Minstrels, playing double bass and bass guitar as well as singing.[3] In 1967, he and several members of the New Christy Minstrels left to found the group the First Edition, with whom he scored his first major hit, "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)", a psychedelic rock song which peaked at number five on the Billboard charts. As Rogers took an increased leadership role in the First Edition following the success of 1969's "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", the band gradually changed styles to a more country feel. The band broke up in 1975-76, and Rogers embarked on a long and successful solo career, which included several successful collaborations, including duets with singers Dottie West, Dolly Parton, and Sheena Easton, and a songwriting partnership with Lionel Richie. His signature song, 1978's "The Gambler", was a crossover hit that won him a Grammy Award in 1980 and was selected in 2018 for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. He developed the Gambler persona into a character for a successful series of television films starting with 1980's Emmy-nominated Kenny Rogers as The Gambler. In 1986 he had throat surgery.
There was a reason he was called one of the Silver Foxes… I for one consider him THE Silver Fox of all time (before and after his face lift)… it was his voice that just did it for me.
I always thought that Kenny Rogers was a nice singer and a great talent. But it was not until I watched a documentary about him that I really grew to admire him, his singing ability, and his legacy.
I saw Kenny Rogers and the First Edition at Six Flags over Ga when I was a young child. My best friend's older sisters took us to some wildly inappropriate places (their Daddy made them take us). There was no concert venue there at that time, I'm 63 so it's been a minute. The band set up on the midway, in front of the puppet show theater, and we sat on the hot black asphalt to watch them. Of course Little Vickey and I got lost in the crowd but the sisters found us. Can you even imagine times changing that much! My point is that Kenny started out as a bit of a rocker before he settled into country. When you think of all the production that goes into concerts now, man, what a difference. I see people dissing auto tune and stuff like that on here all the time. They say our music generation was the best naturally and I agree. But by the time I was a teenager, many bands (not naming who), just sounded way better on their studio albums. I've been to a rock concert or so that kinda sucked. I don't recall a country concert sucking, but I'm sure some sound better in the studio. I know Sonny & Cher and Elvis sounded great at the Omni. Not so humble brag, my parents took me, lol. Maybe the microphones and amps were so poor that singers had to train themselves to sing out loud and clear. Maybe that's why theaters like the Fox in Atlanta or the Ryman in Nashville were built so acoustically perfect. I don't like much of the rock that's come out in the last few decades. I got off rock and back to country when I quit dope at 18. I do love Nickleback a couple of songs here and there from other artists. I'd love to see your reactions to some of the Nickleback and Hardy collaborations. I think you would like Kenny's older stuff too.
Thank you so much for this. My husband and u are in our 70s and we have a blast watching your reactions to a lot of our favorites. You bring a fresh take.❤
There is a copy of this song BP where Lionel comes on stage with him and sings this with him. You should check it out. You think you love this song right now? Mannnnnnnn!!!!!!
Loved his voice. His yacht was pointed out to me long ago (might have been Baltimore Harbor, not sure). It was named 'Gambler's Lady'. Thought it was so cool that he named it after two of his big hits.
Kenny was a mega star back in the day. My favorite Kenny Rogers song was Just Dropped In. You should check it out. The song made an appearance in The Big Lebowski.
Hey BP, I'd like to recommend a love song that rivals the quality of this beautiful and simple song. It is "Where Do I Begin". It is the theme song for the early 70's movie Love Story. It originally was instrumental for the film. But, words were written and it was sung by Andy Williams. This song will bring tears to the eyes of those who were moved by the film and song back in the day. Thanks
I know you love your child/children so I have 2 wonderful songs by Kenny (that as a parent) you'll love. Trust me on this! They are, THE GREATEST and BEAUTIFUL, ALL THAT YOU COULD BE. *please check them out*
Lionel Ritchie came to Nashville a few years ago to record a new album. He contacted some country music artist to invite them to record with him. Lionel asked them to pick out one of his hit songs to sing a duet with him. Lionel told them in the duet, it would be their choice as to which part to sing. Lead or harmony. The results were wonderful. There is a video of Lionel with each singer telling the story of how this idea played out. One of the country artist was Willie Nelson. Can you imagine Willie singing a Lionel Ritchie song with Lionel? I couldn’t. But it is fabulous. All of the artist were fabulous. Blake Shelton was another one. They were all so good. It all should be on You Tube unless it has been removed. Interviews and the songs. It is special for sure. And the chosen country artist were sooooo excited and honored to do it.
Kenny was truly legendary, he is missed , but what amazing music he left us . Very high standards for singing back then , we were spoiled with so much excellence and talent! Now, no one makes music to show off the vocals these days in my opinion, just static vocals.
I thought it was the one I went to in Atlanta. I remember the stage was round because that was what it was billed as "Kenny Rodgers concert in the round".
But remember this was done without auto tune so that's his real vocal talent

Also Lionel was at his funeral and it was so emotional! They were great friends. And when they told the story of writing this together was so hilarious!
Lionel Richie also sang with the group Alabama. The song was Deep River Woman. I LOVE that song.
You definitely have to check out the live video with him and Lionel. Its so awesome.
Yes that was a great performance
Agreed! Unforgettable performance! Please check it out!!
SO GREAT BACK THEN..
A MUST WATCH 😊
Agreed love to see a reaction to the 2 of them performing this hit. RIP Kenny.
I been trying to get him to watch that since he checked out his first reaction to Lady
There is a live version he sings with Lionel…the tell the story of the writing and they are amazing together. Legends.
Lionel and Kenny had such a special friendship. It was magic anytime you could catch them together.💜💜💜

Now THAT is talent, both writing and singing.
This was when artists had talent
The live with Kenny and Lionel doing this song is nothing short of INCREDIBLE. Its just the best thing ever. You MUST see it! 😉
What a voice Kenny Had.

One of the best singers of my youth. Almost everyone had a crush on him.
Never LAUGH at the true talent that came before you
Why are they laughing at him??? Not understanding it...
It almost pissed me off at first too, then I realized that their reactions were more incredulous than anything else. They just seemed amazed that Kenny Rogers could get those vocal effects simply by manipulating the microphone.
That was a "happy to be listening" laugh, not a "mocking" laugh.
Have you never enjoyed anything so much that you started laughing uncontrollably? You should lighten up.

Aaah Kenny Rogers. He is so missed. ❤🎼🎶🫂
Such music that my generation was privileged to grow up surrounded by....country and rock. And I am proud to be a product of that music.
Wonderful reactions guys, Thank You for sharing this❤
Fabulous song. Very glad to see this.
Kenny is an icon. RIP Kenny. You are so very missed Love your reactions,

The greatest love song ever written.
Kenny Rogers started out in rock as Kenny Rogers and The First Edition..Black you should check him.out then.❤
Great song, and singer! Kenny will always be a super star!
And that night after the concert…the next generations of Americans were conceived. 😊
I so wish you would react to Kenny Rogers, "The Greatest" It is such a great song with a wonderful message.

I think you would really enjoy listening to Kenny sing She Believes in Me.

There's a few of them
Lionel Richie wrote several songs for Kenny Rogers
Rogers has natural Vibrato in his voice.
The ladies just swooned when he would sing. My uncle looked a lot like him.
Kenny did a lot of love songs

This live version is more soulful than studio recorded version, IMO.
