I guess you panicked after fail to grab the blade that one time...don't try to grab it again if you fail once, don't put your face and eyes on the enemies blade after you failed like you did, best thing is immediate retreat (cross step or jump backwards thrust combination) with guard up and be prepared. Your opponent needs a second anyway to get his blade in position again, so you don't have to fear a thrust in that situation. I would also recommend using lighter gear while smallsword fencing, the movement becomes different and more appropiate then.
