  • Faith and fright: Navigating Christianity & occult entertainment. Occult-inspired imagery and storylines pervade much of popular culture. Horror has become mainstream. The debate is on entertainment choices for Christians. Should Christians watch whatever they want? Ex-psychic Jen Nizza warns against the dangers of the occult and shares her journey from divination to Christianity. Peter Laws, a pro-horror church minister, author and film critic argues that Christians should be discerning in their entertainment choices but says people have always had a fascination with the macabre and argues the case for escapism.

      Yes! If we say we can watch what we want, guided by personal pleasure and our own moral compass, we could argue that porn is ok too. Some people claim to watch "ethical" porn and will justify it because the actors are paid well or it's directed by a woman or something, but obviously it's not ok. But if horror movies are ok then porn is too, as long as you enjoy it, and aren't hurting or judging anyone else, you know? It's a slippery slope.

    A great discussion. I do feel that Peter is completely naive to the spiritual warfare component (which is huge). He just seemed to want to dismiss this reality and the many scriptures relating to it. Yes he is seeking to be ‘inclusive’ but like Jenn says, it shouldn’t be at the cost of omitting truth and being disobedient/unfaithful to God, who tells us to enter by the ‘narrow gate’ and to ‘deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow him’.

    A good discussion. In my opinion it is unfortunate that we are so concerned about alienating people that we will contort and twist the Bible to suit people's thinking, instead of encouraging people to change their thinking to conform to the Bible.
    The Bible tells us "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2
    Personal taste never trumps Biblical instruction. It is NOT personal taste when we are discussing witchcraft, demonic influence and other negative things. The Bible tells us to reject certain things... they are not simply personal taste.
    I encourage us to read and think very carefully on Malachi 3, Acts 8 and Acts 16.

    I was saved like Jenn after a career of being a psychic medium. It was all “love and light” with the entities until I bought a bible and then they dropped the mask and started attacking me.
    If it wasn’t for the Holy Spirit stepping in and saving my stupid butt, I would probably still be tormented to this day. Humans have no authority over the demonic. Christians have borrowed authority from Christ as long as we are abiding in Him, but if we stray the way Peter Laws has, we’re on our own.

    This was very good. I understand Peter, as my life has been writing and speaking about the paranormal for the past 35 years. It was all ok until I got into spirit communication about 15 years ago and I went to a very dark place, through obsession, vexation and infestation in my home. I went to confession and left it behind, running away from the paranormal, but a wise priest told me I had to go back into that community and tell them about the danger … about the devil. It’s very hard. People do not want to give up their ghost boxes and K2 meters and angel cards (and almost all my friends were mediums or channelers or remote viewers). In addition people find deep community in the new age, so their whole lives are wrapped up in it. I take it a day at a time and try to quietly share what I’ve learned as I talk about the paranormal. Both of these speakers have really helped me.

    Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)

      I just recently found his channel, and I really like that he doesn't attempt to frame every single thing as a spiritual battle in which there is an objective good and evil.
      Framing everything as a spiritual battle can be incredibly harmful. First, it has been proven to contribute to the development of mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder. Secondly, it can lead to people reframing legitimately dangerous situations as spiritual battles. This is one that I have had to deal with lately, as a friend finally left an abusive relationship, and her pastor tried to say that it was a spiritual battle and tell her that, as a Christian woman, she should be standing by her abuser, and helping him work through it. They weren't even married, just dating, and her church tried to manipulate her into staying in a situation which was actually dangerous for her. Thankfully, she decided to just leave that church, rather than constantly defend her decision to keep herself safe.
      Bottom line is that when you constantly hype up the danger of trivial things, you can end up trivializing dangerous things.

    Interesting Pete thinks Jesus is more concerned with religious hypocrisy. That’s actually what he sounds like he’s doing. Also, he’s using some typical debate tactics to undermine Jenn and the Scripture. Firstly, he presents a false equivalence when he equates discerning a sermon(!) and overtly occult symbols. Secondly he tries to “straw man” her points by generalizing them and exaggerating them to a point they would seem ridiculous. Lastly, every time she makes a good point, he pivots with a red herring, pulling the listeners in different directions, away from her solid points.

    Pete is very concerned about how Christians sound to the world. But we were already warned about that. Christ told us that the world would hate us. It is not a solution to change the Gospel and GOD's Word to suit the world. The solution comes in sharing the Gospel in love. Here is a passage that might be useful to remember...
    John 15:18-21
    “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me."

As for the debate - I had expected his arguments to be stronger than this and I found myself agreeing more with Jen than with him. His unfortunate use of the term "conspiracy theories" didn't do him any favours in this debate, either. Normally people use that phrase to belittle. Also, God does not sit beside us while we watch slasher movies. The Holy Spirit is inside us and God does not want us looking at witchcraft, Satanic worship or anything horror related. It opens the door to evil. It also desensitizes us. Look to God's word for guidance and not Peter. We should still love those who are caught up in this and we can love them without condoning it. Having wrestled with this topic for a long time myself, I'm not certain I can agree fully with either of your guests. I agree with Jenn that there is a spiritual battle taking place and that certain forms of entertainment may lead one down the rabbit-hole of occultism and even demonization and her warnings in this regard are much appreciated, but does that mean that if the entertainment doesn’t lead down that path or doesn't have any discernible negative effects, that it’s therefore okay? On the other hand, even a casual reading of Scripture shows that God is indeed concerned with our thoughts and imaginations, so the view that God is okay with all entertainment (since He is above such things) as long as I’m okay with it is manifestly false.
    Although much entertainment clearly falls into the category of Christian liberty, I think Christians can agree that any form of entertainment that causes a person to sin is certainly wrong - this would, for example, include things like explicit sex and nudity. For the rest, even though there is no law against watching any of it (and we should be careful not to make any laws where God has made none), a Christian does not belong to himself and does not seek to please himself, but God. There may be no law against watching violent content, but we know that violence displeases God and therefore should displease us as well. I’m not saying that there aren’t legitimate reasons to watch movies containing violent content. The issue here is watching explicit violence for ENTERTAINMENT. A movie like Schindler’s List, for example, contains very explicit violence but the purpose is certainly not to entertain.
    The issue of blasphemy is even clearer. To be sure, if I hear someone blaspheming in the street (for example using the name of Jesus as a curse word) I am not sinning. But surely, if I love Christ, it will grieve me, not even to mention how much it grieves the Father! When a Christian, who loves the Lord, hears his name being used in that way the entertainment ceases to be entertaining because it grieves him. To be blunt - if blasphemy doesn’t ruin your entertainment for you, you either do not realize what is happening or you feel nothing for God.
    Of course, there may be reasons to even watch entertainment containing these things (engaging the culture, for example), but not for entertainment. Ultimately it's not so much a matter of should or shouldn't but being conformed to the image of Christ - learning to love what God loves and to hate what God hates. Anyway, these are some of my thoughts on the subject but the issue is too vast to discuss in a UA-cam comment. I hope that you will engage the subject again since it is of great importance and, I think, something many Christians struggle to navigate (myself included).

    Although Peter seems like a nice guy who knows of Jesus, I'm not sure what he believes about Jesus. I agree with his points that we need to dialoge with people who see life through a different lens, as his debate partner detailed. But we do need to recognize what scripture says about evil, hooror and the like. Peter never spoke on what he learned about the bibles position on evil. He seemed more concerned about the personal offense taken, buy having a limit. I do believe there is a danger that people can fall into, opening thier hearts and minds to demonic interests. I did fall prey to the demonic through these types of books and movies. I joined the new age. I see Peter completely ignoring some important portions of evil that can and does pulls people in. It is not just a matter of taste. BTW, I serve the homeless and am doing the works that Peter mentioned, I speak and love people who watch horror and practice new age.
    From my perspective it seemed that Peter ignored the concerns about where this interest can lead.
    I listened to the book you wrote about how you became a minister, its well written, but nothing was mentioned about his faith and who Christ is. I saw more about a person being obsessed about having to "give up" horror. The book brought me to the conclusion that he desperately needed to blend the two, so he could resolve his own personal issue. I have also listened to his sermons, while interesting, they don't explain the gospel of 1 cor 15. I do agree that the S. King book The Stand lead me in the same direction Peter went, that thier must be good and evil and it is best to be with the good. Evil only twists what is good. I found Christ and trusted in His birth death and resurrection. I too was fascinated with the supernatural. Yet, I would like to hear Peter's definition of Christianity.

    Dear Jenn,
    You TROUNCED your opponent in this debate! This man did not have a Biblical leg to stand on! I was so disappointed in his statements that it is OK for Christians to see horror movies and Taylor Swift concerts. He never quoted one Scripture to defend his position (because there is none)! When I was a baby Christian in the late 1970s, I went with some friends from my neighborhood (the Bronx, NY) to see "The Exorcist". ( I didn't know any better at that time.) As I remember, in that movie the demon WINS IN THE END when it gets cast out of Linda Blair and goes directly into the priest, and the priest jumps out the window to his death! This is IN NO WAY a movie that Christians should see. One of the reasons people get into the occult is that they have an inordinate fascination with DEATH! The Book of Proverbs says, "All those who hate [Godly wisdom] love death. Jenn, may you, Doreen, and Jac be blessed beyond measure as you expose the unfruitful deeds of darkness! I believe your opponent in this debate is probably a "progressive Christian" and not a TRUE Christian!

    I'm with Pete here. No doubt Jenn would disapprove of things like Dungeons & Dragons, Harry Potter and maybe even Lord of the Rings. It's like she jumped out of a magic time portal from the 1980s with all the Satanic ritual abuse moral panics. She's kind of like the wokesters who rail against classical literature because they thinks it's all white male supremacy or such. It's okay and natural to have some escapism in life. Besides, in Dungeons & Dragons, while there are demons and monsters in it, you get to be warriors and wizards that slay these things. ;-)

    What a strange discussion. Jenn definitely holds some strange views - like that Christians shouldn't be interested in certain types of pop culture (ie pop music or horror movies), but man Peter Laws misses the mark on Christianity. To the point where I am surprised that the ministry would allow him to continue being a Reverend.
    Mediumship, witchcraft, divination etc is strictly prohibited in the Bible.
    Meeting people where they are does not mean using their divination tools etc.
    The irony is Peter talks about helping people etc, yet I can't find anything anywhere where he actually does that. Unless he's talking about helping himself?

But that doesn’t mean it unequivocally always will. We're each instructed to use discernment. Govern yourself with guidance of the Holy Spirit, but don't force extra weights on your brothers.

Don’t expose yourself to rubbish content, the Bible doesn’t graphically portray evil for entertainment, it tells you what to stay away from and for condemning it. You don’t need to watch the Exorcist to know to stay away from the demonic, etc. I would say the guy there is compromised.

Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

    I strongly disagree with Peter’s opinions. Jenn has experience with the occult and besides the Bible is clear about the occult and how Christians are supposed to be set apart from culture if it glorifies the works of darkness. Jesus is always relevant. Jesus is the Word. The whole Bible points to Christ, not just the gospels.

    It's ironic that when Jenn was a practicing psychic that someone like Peter would have been one to reach out and engage with her. People in her audience might have just been afraid of her or simply hurled judgment her way. Very ironic.

    • @LouisaWatt
      @LouisaWatt 9 місяців тому +3

      It’s not ironic at all. What Peter is doing is what a pastor did to me when I was a witch: reached out and encouraged me to keep doing what I was doing.
      How is that helpful in any way? He would have happily led me to hell and applauded as I burned.

    • @forrestfish34
      @forrestfish34 9 місяців тому

      @LouisaWatt nope. Peter is not endorsing the occult. He is arguing that it is okay for Christians to go see a horror movie or read a horror novel. Reading Harry Potter is not the same as actively trying to contact the dead. Jenn seems to think they are, but it simply isn't. She seems to want to make rules for everyone though, and if they don't agree, then they're probably compromised, in league with Satan, deceived, or not really Christians to begin with. Peter also endorses engaging with people before hurling abuse and judgment their way. Sorry about your pastor, he sounds like he was a real winner.

    • @forrestfish34
      @forrestfish34 9 місяців тому +1

      @LouisaWatt nope. He's just saying that Christians who watch movies or read Harry Potter aren't practicing the occult. They're just watching movies and reading books. Peter has his own agenda to push, if you actually look at his own work. The “church” podcast he talked about at the start isn’t just horror themed, he actually conducted a seance with his patreons back in 2021. He also said in a recent video on his channel that it’s better to be open minded about mediumship and spiritism.

  • @horsesofthegods

    Peter puts forward some good points here and there s a good argument to be more relaxed about these things, but there's another perspective to consider. In ancient societies people worshipped a mother goddess and valued women in spiritual roles as shamans and healers. The moon was a central focus and astrological and monthly female cycles were connected to ritual practice. There is some evidence that these societies were more equal between men and women and were matrifocal.
    With the onset of agriculture, these societies changed, and men took on more power. This is called patriarchy, where men hold most of the control.
    Controlling the narrative: With this shift, some argue that organised religions, now mostly run by men, rewrote the stories. Powerful women became seen as witches, and women's natural desires were seen as temptations from the devil (like Eve in the Garden of Eden).
    Why? This could have been a way to keep women in check. If women are seen as inherently bad or linked to evil, it makes it easier to control their behavior and keep them from challenging the male-dominated system.
    As men pulled harder and gained more power. To stay in control, they redefined womens societalrole by making them seem weak or dangerous.
    Maybe Taylor Swift is onto something.

God save us. She is only fighting on camera. Poor woman needs help to be saved from her demons. She surely fights like a possessed. This was an interesting discussion but arguably a complete failure of booking. Jenn Nizza wasn't even really talking about the relevant topic. She's really interested actual attempts to practice the occult. It would have been more interesting to get someone with a conservative or moderate view on the question of violence etc. in entertainment. Ideally, someone who - like Pete Laws - is at least passably competent with respect to what psychologists and other experts say about the psychological function of such entertainment.
