I just caught a winter flounder the other day. Was pretty nice too 17" . Certainly was surprised I very rarely see them. Those are the stories I always hear from the older guys they were everywhere years ago.
I recall fishing the Long Branch Pier as a kid for ling and whiting. Those are some tasty fish. If I recall correctly the meat of a ling separates easily from the bone. Pretty much run your finger down the backbone. Been a long time and I may be talking out my arse!
I like to fish out on a charter out of Point Pleasant NJ. The rods I rent are always so heavy and they use 8oz weights making it very hard to jig. The last trip my arm hurt so bad and had 1 keeper. Would a rod like I see these guys using be okay for ocean party boats? I usually feel like the weight goes down so far and fast. Not sure these lighter rods and rigs would work where the boats take us. Also the party boats only have one hook that most folks just put strip bait on.
Great content as usual, got a couple of laughs when you threw Rick’s fish back and kicked the bucket over😂. Were they turning on and off on a particular part of the tide?
Actual sea sickness? 1990 cod fishing on the wilheric out of moriches. That said, I will take dramamine if it's really swelly/nasty, but I'm not sure it's needed anymore. It's clear I've built up a resistance.
I'm swinging at anything that could be a fish. Sometimes there's almost no difference between a big fluke grabbing it and the jig momentarily caught on the bottom structure.
Caught a winter flounder on Cartwright over the weekend too. I dropped a massive fluke that I’m assuming was easily over 10 as well, had two 6# that felt tiny compared to this other one on your ocean fluke rod. When bringing it a big fluke do you stop reeling when they’re doing big head shakes or will you keep reeling through the shakes
The whole objective, reeling or not, when the fish is shaking like that is to keep a good bend in the rod so the fish doesn't get slack. The parabolic bend in that rod does a good job of absorbing those shakes as long as you keep the line tight. That said, sometimes they're just not hooked well and losing it is inevitable. Sounds like you had a good trip.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing the last two weekends we put a lot of nice fish in the box out there, definitely has improved. Dropped a lot of fish that day which I typically don’t do. Was trying out jigging worlds ball swing hook bucktails think maybe too much play in hook, big fan of their stuff but best I could come up with switched to an old fixed hook bucktail of yours and the problem stopped. My fluke rod has some play between the fore-grip and blank which didn’t concern me until yesterday if I bring it down to josh is there anything he could do you think
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John, for the ling try a crank or 3 off the bottom, been working well for me to reduce the number of them interfering with the fluke
I've had good fishing from the shore in shinnecock and moriches bays over the years, and on the beach just east of moriches inlet. Haven't tried recently.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing wow that said it all . I live out there too it’s been rough. Lucky I’ve been doing good with the porgy’s some sea bass and blues here and there . Thanks for the reply John , I love what you do
Glad to hear the bite picking up. Been a struggle to get out much this summer, hopefully the bite continues and it forces my hand..lol Appreciate the response, and love the vids!
What are the regulations on those Ling, their not listed on the DEC website, unless they go by a different name ? Still not hearing that, can’t have a positive impact on the ocean. Thanks
Boy do I miss when I was a kid …winter flounder were everywhere. If you didn’t come home with a 5 gal bucket of filets you didn’t have a good day.. suppose that’s why their a prize to catch today…
Yea, thanks for that.... cant believe you guys couldnt see what you were doing. Like the old headboat cod crowd, "we used to fill burlap sacks with them" 😔
I think it was the commercial draggers who decimated the flounder numbers. Once they had the gear and knew where they wintered, flounder were never the same.
As a Marine Biologist I will say they are very politically charged. NJ canceled their Wind program. Alot of studies are inconclusive about damage to wildlife and the ecosystem. Plus with the increase of Whale and Dophin beaching since the program started in NJ the program was canceled.
Thanks for the videos John. I just started fishing for flounder and hadn't ever caught a keeper. Caught 3 keepers Saturday

That's a huge one!
Its nice to have evidence that there are actually still (winter) flounder down in the depths.
We foul-hooked 2 this trip.

Good video Mr. Skinner.
I have been subscribed for a long time
been watching for quite a while
great channel!!!!!!!
Thanks!
@13:50 That’s what friends are for, they can’t help themselves 😂
Another great video
hear in north carolina recreational fishing for flounder is closed because the commercial fisherman need them
Hey John any tips for big fluke
Man I just got my boat back and it’s broke already. It’s a 2005 Suzuki with 350 hours and nothing but problems. I’m so pissed I can’t get out of
Hi what kind of rod and reel are they? And how much weight are they?

These rods are made for ocean fluking, and also handle big stripers with ease, such as on this video: ua-cam.com/video/AuLiLdBuc8c/v-deo.html
Water temperature rising did them in
Rick ever think about a Seakeeper? Looks like she was rolling pretty good.
Would take a major mod to the boat.
I wish our flounder was that big I'm not that far from all we have is winter flounder
Do you feel you need to travel so far for fluke. Any luck closer to home. Thanks John.
We wouldn't go that far if we didn't have to. Montauk is 10 miles less. That's our other option.
Use your bike lately John looking to get one how's yours holding up thanks for videos thumbs up
I've only used it on the road and it's been fine.
How are you holding with 5 oz south of the island? Anything less than a 8 oz I'm too far out.
15# braid.
Great content as usual, got a couple of laughs when you threw Rick’s fish back and kicked the bucket over😂.
Were they turning on and off on a particular part of the tide?
It seemed like they turned on with the beginning of ebb.
If this is pre storm, do you think that the drop on barometric pressure had anything to do with bite turning on?
I think it was the beginning of the ebb tide that got them going.
Looked like a fun trip!
Always is.
John when was the last time you experienced sea sickness?

Why do you jig the rod and all of a sudden stop and lift it up a little? I don’t fish off boats so might be a dumb question
I'm swinging at anything that could be a fish. Sometimes there's almost no difference between a big fluke grabbing it and the jig momentarily caught on the bottom structure.
@@JohnSkinnerFishingyea I do that a lot too when I just feel a little pressure on the rod thanks

Yes, 100% bring him that rod.

what were the water temps you guys were working with?
73 at block, but cooler on the way there.
When did the fish turn on. At the top turn around. ?
yes
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you
We fished block yesterday windmills areas and Misquamicut. beaches. It was for us terrible again.
Thanks for the report. My friends had a slow pick south of the wind turbines.
Can I do anything even
near this from the beaches?

Was this before or after the storm?
(If you answer later in the video, my apologies, only half way through lol)

Try listening with headphones maybe. Hard to miss, like repetitive thunder. Ling (AKA Red Hake).
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Haddock ? 18” no limit
Red Hake - not Haddock. Ling are un-managed.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing 😄 🤣 😂
Why do you knife the fluke John?
They own him money.
That's called bleeding out. Cut the gills behind the gill plate removes the blood in the filets and makes the meat taste better.
