As a Z owner myself I can tell you like all sports cars of that era with a turbo 300zx, Skyline, RX7, one of their biggest problems was cooling down the cast iron engine.. he should have vented the hood to the max and installed a large oil cooler and triple row radiator before ever atempting to push those rpms..
That's why he blew his engine. It's the same in the anime, in the games and in the manga. Haruda just knows how to stack on power but forgets about the vital things, coolant. That's why despite pushing his Z31 beyond what was safe for a VG30 which is about 450, his car was pushing 550hp with about 1.8bar as stated in the manga but due to him pushing it to the ragged edge every time he overtakes the Blackbird and such, it could not keep the speed long enough before the heat catches up. That's why Hiramoto is the better tuner who could use less to do more. Keep in mind that his GTR only has about 600hp and he's able to keep up with them and even outpace both the Blackbird and Devil Z if he just din't let go and retire.

This is why I don't install aftermarket Turbo Kits or Superchargers to my cars. I get the most out of them N/A and that way they continue to run perfectly and stay reliable.

I mean this seems to be the reason both Mazda and Toyota haven’t gone down the path of downsizing the engine and using a turbo like everyone else. It might be a better balance between fuel economy and power, but forcing air into an engine has to have more reliability issues than an engine breathing naturally. The new civics aren’t old enough for reliability issues to show, but I bet they will have shorter life spans than the 2000s era civics.

Kei backed down to avoid dying and leaving his mother (although that whole race was basically fixed by the people who tuned his car). Eiji was scared his engine would break under the scramble boost. Almost all the people who could’ve beaten Akio chickened out. They all wanted to win but they either gave up out of fear or crashed in the case of the photographer and R200 Club

VG cranks generally don't hold out after about 6-700HP, they snap. That's why you'll see a lot of the higher horsepower applications running billet crankshafts. Now you can get serious power out of a VG, but the bottleneck is the crank. Kinda similar to how Ford 302 blocks crack down the center after about 500HP or 4AG's grenade (usually by sending a connecting rod through the block) after about 250HP.
There was a race car called Nissan GTP-ZX which ran at IMSA races during the 1980s. That car had a pretty nice VG30ET boosted to some 650/700 hp and 70 kgf/m of torque. So, that engine was pretty much solid enough for that output. But the performance for ET versions was very limited to that factor, sicne they weren't resistant enough to survive long running. In fact, I'd be more worried with overheating than metal wearing. With a forged crankshaft, the rest is pretty much up to your taste. Things got way better in the DETT versions, with the Fairlady Z32, the same car Jun Auto barely modified to clock 400 kph at Bonneville Salt Flats. But the magic of these "miladies" (Z31 and Z32) are on the body. They are just too perfect for grand touring at highways. The Porsches and "grannies" 240/280-Z have no aerodynamic control at the rear. The car reacts like a flying wing at high speeds and you can only mantain speed enough if you're going fully straight. Once you get a long curve, you're doomed if you don't have a big airfoil on the rear. The "boxy" design of Z31 and Z32 help in keeping downforce at rear and perforating the air smoothly at the front. Something not seriously considered by the author of the manga/anime. In the performance-investment, the miladies Z31 and Z32 are better than anything else. Not even the Supra and NSX come close to that. Maybe a NSX with lots of money invested. But then MR layout is another league and we're talking about a specific model designed to beat very refined european MR exotics. In the cheap FR league, Z31 and Z32 still top of the line.
The Devil Z is also a single cam 12V..and it revs up to 9000 with what i presume some massive boost.. I think his Z31 most likelly has an intercooler.. its quite easy and cheap to fit
at 1:47 you can see the original and actual colour of Haruda's 300ZX is red. And Akio's old 300ZX was/is also red... Wich means Haruda's Z could very likely be Akio's old Z

Haruda is such a fearless young kid, he thinks he's hot shit and then he kills his engine. Still though, love his car. If you can afford to get a new engine every month it can be a working strategy :D
He's got right stuff just his personality makes him take the faster ruite into getting deep instead of slow tuning that explores all avenues under all conditions

I think it's set in the 90's, when 5-speeds were the best you could reasonably get. their ratios were prolly set for close-to-optimum use of the powerband since either big or twin turbos were the go-to choices for power. there's also the big prob of aero drag at 255+kph, especially when the longest stretch is above the bay
he was tunning cheap.. still respect what he managed even if it ended in a burn engine.. for a time he managed to take on even the BlackBird.. The series is about proper tunning.. this shows why.. adding just boost and a bigger intercooler/inyector and remaping isnt gonna make miracles.. the gearbox..suspension and geometries..cooling.. even the oil system need to be done...

I’ve actually heard some pretty impressive things about VG30s. Not sure about the Z31 version, but if youtube is to be believed, some drag racers are making 1000 (american dyno) whp on stock bottom end Z32s.

So those trucks are doing 260 kmh ? ( 161 miles an hour ) . This is set in 1990 I belive . For perspective , the Lamborghini Jalpa went out of production in 1988 , which had a top speed of 249 kmh . Thats like if a modern 18 wheeler was outpacing a Huracan ( Based on both of these cars being the entry level lamborghini of the time )
I never understood the inclusion of a Z31 in the Wangan Midnight anime or Manga that car isn't a highway car. It's home are tight mountain roads. It was a missed opportunity to not have it feature in Initial D. Especially since it would actually make sense there. And it could be a 200ZS/ZG/ZR rather than a lazy 300ZX. It's a car that eats mountain roads and adores it. So for it to be in Wangan makes little sense. Same as the 350 didn't really make sense in Initial D. The 350 would be far more suited to Wangan. If it existed in that time period.

In the 3.0 V6 300ZX configuration I'd say that it is more of a Grand Tourer because the transmission paired with it, it's got longer gears than the standard 2.0, 200Z/ZG/ZR. The gearing in the 200 was much more Touge/Rally like. In the 2+2 seat variant the extra 8 inches helped the chassis sit better in corners and cured the twitchiness the regular 2 seat variant had in hard cornering. Also if we're talking heavy cars that performed well on Touge, R32/33/34 were all heavier than the Z31, the Celica GT was also heavier, Supra was slightly heavier.

If that was the case, the S30Z would be an absolute garbage choice, lightweight and aero-less as it is. Its funmy looking at the engine bay shot. Some parts are almost perfectly done, like the sprak plug wires and the little metal strap that holds the fan shroud. And other parts are a lil goofy, like the weird wide pipe on the roght of the motor and the 2 hoses exiting the right valve cover.
They are cool cars for sure! You can always put a dry NOS kit in instead of turbo and it'll give you 50+hp for cheap. It won't hurt the engine either if you do it right. I might eventually put a 70 shot in my S130 for spirited driving.
That's awesome! Nothing wrong with a stock Z. My 280ZX was my daily for the first year I owned it, I had built a track-ready '76 Austin Mini for my Summer ride, but I ended up liking the 280 way more, sold the Mini, and got another fun car for my winter ride. I regret using the 280 for that winter though, but it was very fun drifting on the snow haha. Even pulled some 80km/h drifts! My advice to you is to get another car for winter (if you get snow).
Well I live in the south part of the US so there really isn't a say if I get snow or not. Sometimes it does and other times it doesn't. Either way I don't think my mother would let me drive in the snow so that shouldn't be a worry for me. Just gotta store her properly.
Depends If you just want the looks then it isn't that bad, as the guy above me said the car is around 8-10k in decent condition If you want all the upgrades, you're definitely wanting to spend a little over 20K in reinforcing the entire engine to withstand boost without falling apart, specially cooling since the VG is cast iron
@Bronyfur05 the biggest fault with the z31 is the cooling. The factory motor can take alot boost before it starts getting upset, but cooling it is the issue. The rad is at a extreme angle and doesn't get much air flow, and the bay just heat soaks. Most failures on the z31 turbo is headgasket, as most guys just don't care enough to beef up the cooling
If you read the manga or if you've played WMMT Story Mode, he blew the engine racing Reina and Blackbird. He was running way too high boost. They could barely keep him in sight, but then it ended for him in a cloud of smoke! lol They didn't even stop for him and just continued the race. 😂

In the performance-investment, the miladies Z31 and Z32 are better than anything else. Not even the Supra and NSX come close to that. Maybe a NSX with lots of money invested. But then MR layout is another league and we're talking about a specific model designed to beat very refined european MR exotics. In the cheap FR league, Z31 and Z32 still top of the line.

If it was just a VG30ET it is pretty amazing considering it is a single-cam 12v & lacks even an intercooler.
The Devil Z is also a single cam 12V..and it revs up to 9000 with what i presume some massive boost..
I think his Z31 most likelly has an intercooler.. its quite easy and cheap to fit

at 1:47 you can see the original and actual colour of Haruda's 300ZX is red. And Akio's old 300ZX was/is also red... Wich means Haruda's Z could very likely be Akio's old Z

With that much of power and torque, all you need is a new gearbox with longer final drive... but Wangan logic, I get it. *facepalm*

I think it's set in the 90's, when 5-speeds were the best you could reasonably get. their ratios were prolly set for close-to-optimum use of the powerband since either big or twin turbos were the go-to choices for power. there's also the big prob of aero drag at 255+kph, especially when the longest stretch is above the bay
he was tunning cheap.. still respect what he managed even if it ended in a burn engine.. for a time he managed to take on even the BlackBird..
The series is about proper tunning.. this shows why.. adding just boost and a bigger intercooler/inyector and remaping isnt gonna make miracles.. the gearbox..suspension and geometries..cooling.. even the oil system need to be done...
@@sparrowlt Apparently the real blackbird was actually a Porsche shell that was totally gutted and used a custom space-frame for rigidity and weight loss, it also had over $100k spend on upgrades alone

Thanks for sharing this little tidbit Francisco, for all we know that's probably how he blew it in the anime if they had only shown it! It's too bad Haruda and his Z were only a side-story because I thought it was cooler than a typical GT-R tuner.

I’ve actually heard some pretty impressive things about VG30s. Not sure about the Z31 version, but if youtube is to be believed, some drag racers are making 1000 (american dyno) whp on stock bottom end Z32s.
That doesn't surprise me for the Z32's, but Z31's on the other hand...

So those trucks are doing 260 kmh ? ( 161 miles an hour ) . This is set in 1990 I belive . For perspective , the Lamborghini Jalpa went out of production in 1988 , which had a top speed of 249 kmh . Thats like if a modern 18 wheeler was outpacing a Huracan
( Based on both of these cars being the entry level lamborghini of the time )

I never understood the inclusion of a Z31 in the Wangan Midnight anime or Manga that car isn't a highway car. It's home are tight mountain roads. It was a missed opportunity to not have it feature in Initial D. Especially since it would actually make sense there. And it could be a 200ZS/ZG/ZR rather than a lazy 300ZX. It's a car that eats mountain roads and adores it. So for it to be in Wangan makes little sense. Same as the 350 didn't really make sense in Initial D. The 350 would be far more suited to Wangan. If it existed in that time period.
I am under the impression that the Z31 is more of a grand touring machine than a touge carver. It's quite a heavy car. It makes sense imo
@@WanganTunedKeiCar a Z31 is heavy? In what world? The Z32 yeah, it's heavier, but a Z31 isn't that heavy. In the 3.0 V6 300ZX configuration I'd say that it is more of a Grand Tourer because the transmission paired with it, it's got longer gears than the standard 2.0, 200Z/ZG/ZR. The gearing in the 200 was much more Touge/Rally like. In the 2+2 seat variant the extra 8 inches helped the chassis sit better in corners and cured the twitchiness the regular 2 seat variant had in hard cornering.
Also if we're talking heavy cars that performed well on Touge, R32/33/34 were all heavier than the Z31, the Celica GT was also heavier, Supra was slightly heavier.
@@Dominik189 I'm not saying it can't work on the touge, but what you're saying, that the Z31 isn't suited for the Shuto, is wrong. If that was the case, the S30Z would be an absolute garbage choice, lightweight and aero-less as it is. With a car like that, you'd be hard-pressed not to--I don't know...--lose traction and *freaking die*

Its funmy looking at the engine bay shot. Some parts are almost perfectly done, like the sprak plug wires and the little metal strap that holds the fan shroud.
And other parts are a lil goofy, like the weird wide pipe on the roght of the motor and the 2 hoses exiting the right valve cover.

They are cool cars for sure! You can always put a dry NOS kit in instead of turbo and it'll give you 50+hp for cheap. It won't hurt the engine either if you do it right. I might eventually put a 70 shot in my S130 for spirited driving.

That's awesome! Nothing wrong with a stock Z. My 280ZX was my daily for the first year I owned it, I had built a track-ready '76 Austin Mini for my Summer ride, but I ended up liking the 280 way more, sold the Mini, and got another fun car for my winter ride. I regret using the 280 for that winter though, but it was very fun drifting on the snow haha. Even pulled some 80km/h drifts! My advice to you is to get another car for winter (if you get snow).
Well I live in the south part of the US so there really isn't a say if I get snow or not. Sometimes it does and other times it doesn't. Either way I don't think my mother would let me drive in the snow so that shouldn't be a worry for me. Just gotta store her properly.

Not much. If you keep a eye out for a unmolested one you can get a very straight turbo manual for less than 8k

If you just want the looks then it isn't that bad, as the guy above me said the car is around 8-10k in decent condition
If you want all the upgrades, you're definitely wanting to spend a little over 20K in reinforcing the entire engine to withstand boost without falling apart, specially cooling since the VG is cast iron
@Bronyfur05 the biggest fault with the z31 is the cooling. The factory motor can take alot boost before it starts getting upset, but cooling it is the issue. The rad is at a extreme angle and doesn't get much air flow, and the bay just heat soaks. Most failures on the z31 turbo is headgasket, as most guys just don't care enough to beef up the cooling

If you read the manga or if you've played WMMT Story Mode, he blew the engine racing Reina and Blackbird. He was running way too high boost. They could barely keep him in sight, but then it ended for him in a cloud of smoke! lol They didn't even stop for him and just continued the race. 😂
