This whole affair screams some of Dan's favorite things:
1) A classic song
2) Dan can sing in the cadence of a Renaissance bard
3) Animation paired with music that has mythical creatures, stars a unicorn, and uses a style reminiscent of _The Last Unicorn._
I was thinking of "The Last Unicorn" too
Unicorns and Dragons? That's like Dan's Left Hand and Right Hand!
@@SuperGuitarBros Hey, great job with the melody! You guys always make such passionate and evocative acoustic covers!
@@paradoxofmind Thank you! Can't wait for you guys to hear the rest of the album!
Obligatory 4) Dan is a furry.
How many harmonies can you sing?
Dan: Yes.

Me reading this repetitive comment for the 1000th time: Okay sure but, 👏HOW👏MANY!?!?
@@789syrus789 Yes. Yes and yes.
I love how this animation uses the actual mythology of unicorns, especially for the end. Unicorns are the magical embodiment of life itself. And to give up that life is truly something sad. That forest dragon cannot breath life into the little things of the world like that dear Unicorn, but they can plant them and wait. Ugh, gods, I'm crying. (Knowing the mythology just makes this harder T^T)
Thank you now im gonna cry

I know what u mean and tbh it's beautiful and sad bc she can't get. Him back and it's sad that he gave his life for a dragon when the others tried to take her life
Yeah
How did they sum up such a tragic love story in 3 minutes that some movies can't even manage in 2 hours? Holy shit ;-;
Short format can actuslly make it EASIER as you can really REALLY focus on the biggest moments
Wheras a whole film you have to come up with stuff to fit the ENTIRE runtime.
Its why for some reaching an essay word count is really hard
Best and saddest love story to ever exist
Easily better love story than Twilight. (old meme revival)
Up did the exact same in its opening moments
Right!? Without a word being said, too

Toss a coin to our bard
Dan could roll a 1 for seducing a god, and still get a critical success.
Of course he’d be a bard, the way he seduced everything that breathes
Hey I’m pretty sure I didn’t give consent for my heart to be absolutely SHATTERED THIS MORNING
For real though, damn! It was so beautiful too
The original folk song of Scarborough Fair was about politely telling an ex lover that they are no longer interested.
Paul Simon came up with and made Canticle, an anti-war song, then blended the two together with his pal Art Garfunkel, in Scarborough Fair/Canticle.
In effect, it tells the warmongers and people who love death and violence that we are no longer interested in their bull, and why.
It’s one of the prettiest break-up songs with war itself that was ever made.
"politely"? Sounds about as polite as "We'll get back together when hell freezes over" xD
This makes so much sense. I've always wondered why the singer was asking for such imposible things.
@@rfmerrill I agree, same energy as "My dear, I don't give a damn!"
Don't for get, some of the lyrics are from Paul Simon's The Side of a Hill, a song a a war that waged on for so long that the soldiers and generals forgot why they were fighting and accidentally killing a 7 year old boy
How the HELL am I finding this 2 yrs later!? Everything about this is just so beautiful oh my god!! This made me fucking cry for how beautiful everything about this piece is! WELL FUCKING DONE
SAME!! I've listened to the song before but didn't see the video and it's BEAUTIFUL
lack of taste?
Welecome to the community that loves these two.
I'm fascinated with how emotionally expressive the dragon is. It's really beautiful.
Bro, same. Like whoever animated this is amazing.
Imogen Scoppie is by far my favorite animator that does Game Grumps. Everything she does is full of expressive emotion, even if it's just Aaron yelling at things.
Is music amazing 👍🙂
The way the dragon shakes her head as she fires off a giddy flame as she plays with the unicorn: it feels real and natural. The sheer amount of the emotion in the unicorn’s eyes as he lies with the dragon is powerful, and my heart beats with his eyes as he gazes at her. The consternation and heartbreak in the dragon’s eyes, looking about wildly as she suffers her fatal wound is mind-blowing to me. You can see it; you can really see it. You see it, and you can feel them in your heart. It’s in every frame, every blink, every turning of the head. The submissive, lack of belonging as the unicorn looks away from his herd members fighting. His eyes as he cries over the body of his lost love, his fear for the worst come to pass; it’s as though denying him pride or dignity wasn’t enough, that the others of his herd had to take even this from him. As his form goes alight, his expression is calm, touched with sadness; he’s made up his mind. And as he gently touches her snout, you see all his love, all his regret for what happened, all his yearning for things to have been different, and you feel his goodbye. The pensive way she touches the gift he left when she wakes, quiet, understanding, sad, with love still warming her heart even though he is gone.
I may not know the meaning of the song itself, but the sounds of it and the story accompanying the video enchant me in ways I can’t explain.
I don't mean to wax poetic, but if anyone who worked on this sees my comments, I just want them to know how it captivated me.
TheMeowingHorse That's so beautiful! You expressed these creatures perfectly.
My poor heart can't even.
I saw it all, but it's a terrible day for rain.
As the animator, I want to thank you for paying such close attention to my work and leaving such a kind comment. :) Take care!
@@iscoppie as amazing as Dan's vocal talents shine for those with ears, yours clearly shine through to anyone with eyes.

Lyrics:
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt (on the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Tracing of sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needle work (blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain)
Then she'll be a true love of mine (Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)
Tell her to find me an acre of land (on the side of a hill a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
(Washes the grave with silvery tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strands (a soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather (war bellows blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme (Generals order their soldiers to kill)
Gather it all in a bunch of heather (and to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
thank you
Thank you, I didn't know the lyrics but now I see just how fitting they are to the animation :O

Those lyrics hit hard. Hard not to imagine what the lyrics are about.
Love this song, hundreds of years old!
Between this, his cover of The Last Unicorn and Night Runner, I'm convinced Dan and all the art teams that work with him are trying to launch us into an 80s animation and storytelling revival.
And I'm *here* for it.
I've personally always maintained that all Dan's songs are inspired by the 80s. He grew up in the 80s and it shows.
@@rixryu3 oh I absolutely agree! I'm just happy to see him reviving the aesthetic. I'm an early 90s kid so I remember, like, falling in love with the art style and storytelling. I'm so beyond willing to follow wherever Dan, and the art teams he collabs with, leads that there's no coming back lmao
They can actually evolve it better than it ever was!!

I mean... between Voltron and She-Ra having reboots, we're definitely in a nostalgia fueled age. The problem with these reboots is they have to be better than the source material, which isnt always an issue (see: my little pony). Im still excited to see what gets rebooted and reinspired next!

When I was young and we had to write short stories in school the teachers would say "write what you know", and I knew I loved mythical creatures... so I would always write about unicorns, dragons, pegasus, mermaids, etc. The main story arcs would always include two creatures from differing species meeting and becoming friends against the odds. Often because both were outcasts. These are the stories I would write from grade 3-onward. I distinctly remember the one with a young winged-unicorn running away to the top of the mountain because the rest of the herd was mean to him... and that's where he met the dragon who was feared by everyone else. They ended up saving all of the creatures in the entire valley from some sort of evil threat.
NEEDLESS TO SAY.
Watching this made my mouth fall open, I was speechless, seeing something I had imagined over and over so many times for so many years come to life so beautifully through someone completely separate from me. While accompanied by Dan's voice... I just had the best cry I have had in ages.
I immediately purchased the CD. You cannot have a moment of such pure and raw emotion like that and just continue on with your day.
That was the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced.
Thank you to everyone involved in it's creation.
Well said! I also wrote such stories and its very refreshing to see media pick up on it from time to time.
Thank you for sharing your story and experience. That was a nice lil read.
@@jucabnubster same
The thing about the song is, it's not about actually successing in these impossible tasks. (You can't make a shirt without seams nor needle work) it's about trying to. It's about trying to do all this for the one you love, even when you know that you can't possibly succeed.

I've always seen it as a breakup song essentially the singer is telling the person to do this stuff as a sort and will get back together of fu what really ties this Theory together is that there's an actual response to the classic song from the woman's point of view also telling him to do these impossible task and then we'll get back together. but I like your idea to.
@@j3ssthealien283 So there is no "classic song" as Scarborough Fair IS the classic song from the early 19th century. If you mean The Elfin Knight, that actually further disproves your theory as the song is based on Scottish tradition and folklore for marriage. The idea is the couple will stay together until the impossible tasks are done.

For those who don't know, this is a cover/rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's song by the same name and, personally, I like this version so much more. The original is slow and calming, this version is also slow and calming but feels like it tells a story; the pacing, the tone, and, paired with the animation, evokes emotion rather than just calmness. Especially comparing the line "generals ordered their soldiers to kill", the original line is sung more quietly and in the background, this version is more out in the open and evokes emotions in the listener, it tells a story with the way its sung here. In short, ya'll did an AMAZING job! I love it!

You're absolutely right. So many elements make this hit even harder than it would have otherwise. So many small things make this all feel RIGHT and immersive. Thanks for this comment, or else I probably wouldn't have thought to study those things in this video too.

I love this song. It's really beautiful, wonderful, classic, and special. The song of Scarborough Fair fits well for the short film with the dragon and the unicorn when they met in the forest and formed a lovely bond of friendship. They even shared their talents of magic to make things grow till they eventually became friends. Then one day, the unicorn was out to get a lilac branch while the dragon was asleep, three of the other unicorns from her herd attacked him and one of them stabbed him in his heart with the horn. The poor dragon was dying in his wound. But before death, the dragon stood his ground and breathed his last fire to make those unicorns run away. He was dead. And when the unicorn heard the commotion, she raced back to her friend as quick as she could, but it was too late. She found her poor dragon friend lying dead with his blood spilling on the ground and it sadly broke her heart. In order to save the dragon's life, the unicorn used up all her magic to heal him and brought him back from the dead, and then the next thing, she was gone. When the dragon awoke at sunrise, he found himself healed and the plants right in front of him. He realized his friend, the unicorn, left them for him and and passed away. The unicorn could not lose him for the sake of their friendship, which meant she sacrificed herself to save the dragon. The dragon never forgot his friend as he planted the little tree and flower bush in the middle of the forest with magic. Magic, excitement, adventure, thrills, and friendship. I always love fantasy things and magical worlds filled with fantastic creatures, immortal beings, little people, and mystic figures. They fascinate me since childhood. There is nothing wrong a little believing. I never gave up believing in fairies and magic with all my heart because I still refuse to grow up and forget all those things I have know in my young life. I am like Peter Pan. I still hate getting old, which is terrible to look weak and ugly. Yuck! I wish to be a fairy that stays strong, childlike, young, and beautiful forever and ever like Tinker Bell (Peter Pan) and the blue fairy (Pinocchio). I love fairies and magic, always have and always will.
😭
I don't cry,my eyes are melting...😭
On top of the lovely sound of the song, the imagery and use of 'plant language' is lovely too
Parsley: Removes bitterness
Sage: Strength and Wisdom
Rosemary: Love
Thyme: Courage and happiness
and the use of oak and the purple flowers of which I think looks closest to Sea Lavender/Statice in this animation-
Oak: Strength, Morale, Resistance, Knowledge
Sea Lavender: Remembrance and Sympathy, though the purple kind also specifically represents Mystery, Enchantment, Charm, and Grace
Thank you for the full breakdown of some of the meaning's of plants. I think, especially with this S&G song, a lot of that context is missed, and that's even more so with this animation.
Thanks for going to the trouble of writing up all that--it was very interesting :)
THANK YOU for this information!
Also, to quote Hamlet, "Rosemary for remembrance". Rosemary can symbolize remembering someone who has passed.

The way the characters make you feel their happiness their love their fear, worry, and pain. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m an empath or what, but whatever emotions are in this video someone had to of put those emotions in there therefore someone has had to feel those emotions, The people that did this put a lot of their emotions into this video, you can see it and feel it. And that is what makes a true masterpiece
When I found this video, I didn't just cry... I think it changed me. Call me an empath if you will, but... I was gone for a while. Something in me, died with their bond.
This song means nothing to me and yet I, a grown ass man, am crying almost as hard as I did at the end of the episode about Fry's dog in Futurama.
Same
Why did you have to bring that poor pupper up you fecker xD
That's because not only is the animation beautiful and sad, but so is the song.
From my understanding, the main set of lyrics for the song are a man telling his lover she may have him if she fulfills a set of impossible tasks (ie sewing him a seamless shirt), while the second set of lyrics that echo explain the circumstances which lead to the man singing to pass away. Soldiers broke into his cabin while he was asleep and killed him.
Which is why he gave an impossible list of demands to his lover. He is dead and cannot be with her.
At least that's my understanding of the song. I may be wrong. Still a sad song either way and Dan did it justice.

Oh no why am I crying!
I really need to start listening to more of your music. From NSP to Night Runner and with the Super Guitar Brothers. It's given me a whole new appreciation to not only 80's music, but to older songs as well. The animation for this is outstanding. It reminds me of the Spirit movies series. Keep up the good work.
Oh and the CD cover art...................Just wow. Whoever is responsible for the artwork did an amazing job.
I showed this to my mum and she damn near cried at the end.
So, damn good job on the animation work. And Dan's singing is *noice.*
Just ‘noice’.
Anyone else getting “the last unicorn” and “spirit” vibes
Definitely. The unicorns' faces are as expressive as the horses in Spirit.
some stuff was directly rotoscoped i believe
not to call myself a... expert on Spirit, but uhhhh i watched it so many times i could replay it in myhead
That, and a Butterfly Dragon ending
I immediately thought of 'The Last Unicorn'. It's one of my favorites.
My dad used to travel around singing folk music. when he got married to my mum and had me he started to settle and decided to be a stay at home dad. I have so many memories of him singing this song to me and practising it for hours. I can't even begin explaining how much this song means to me and how much it means to me that you covered it.
EDIT: in case any of you were interested in his singing, his name is Jim Brannigan and he still has a bunch of his music on his channel Jim Lad! ^-^
Your dad sounds like such an amazing person
Can he sing despacito
Wish I could like this comment twice
That is awesome man, thank you for sharing. :)
You're dad was a modern bard, that's actually badass. Show him this cover if you haven't yet!
I had to delete this video from my phone. Every time I tried to watch it, I could not help but tear up from it. The singing, the visuals, the feeling... It is just way too much.
Come back here every so often when I need to cry,..
Just a general reminder that Dan has stated multiple times that doesn't find the "Dan is a Furry" joke appropriate for these videos. He would rather attention be given to the quality of the song and video that lots of people put time and effort into creating, not the usual GG memes. Please respect the man enough to know when jokes are and aren't called for.
ironically looking through the comments this is the first one i stumbled across mentioning it.
This is truly beatiful. The artwork is so lovingly crafted, the song is sung as if by an angel, all the colors are pretty and the story is sad. Also, Dan is a furry. And there's nothing wrong with that.
At least, it's not the people who walk up to Arin and Dan and just say "Do it."
@@ShadowSora8491 Boo it.
True, but there is nothing wrong with being a furry. Most are just like any other Fandom.
I rarely comment. No one will see this. That's fine. Mr. Avidan and compatriots, I am compelled to comment now. This video is beautiful. In the truest, purest sense. It hearkens back to 'The Last Unicorn' in the best way. I am not a person who is touched by many things to the point of crying. This video is one of them. Even thinking of it now, tears are welling up. It is pure, heartbreaking childhood for me. Thank you for the hard work, dedication, and love you all put into your projects. I shall remember this video after men are gone and tales told by rabbits.
Beautiful comment. I definitely had tears in my eyes as well. This touched my heart in the most beautiful way. Beautiful voice and beautiful video❤
Couldn't have said it better.
This is all fact couldn't have said it better.
That is by far more well written than I could ever achieve. Instead I must say that I cried like a little bitch.
To tales from rabbits after the passing of our greatest folly, under appreciated life.
I cannot and will not stop loving this. Brings tears to my eyes everytime
Makes me cry every time I come back to this.
The expression on the dragon's face when it dies is TRULY distressing
Yeah oof, that hit me right in the feels
But he is alive again at the end?
@@__Mr.White__ She did die once
I didn't expect to be crying this early in the morning after crying so hard last night from working at the hospital. Maybe my emotions are amplified but this is so beautiful. Congrats Dan and the guitars bros for conveying such beauty in this cover.
Thank you for everything you do.
Thank you x1000! ❤💜 Me and mine appreciate you!
Thank you.
Thank you for your work!
Thank you for your hard work and bravery.
to jest najsmutniejsza animacja jaką w życiu widziałam dziękuję jest piękna
2:11-2:12 almost feels like it should be the thumbnail. Bloody hellFIRE is this a gorgeous piece. This... This was shared by a friend who did indeed give a "FEELS WARNING" when he shared it with me, but... That warning was NOT enough. This hit hard on such a basic level that I'm still reeling a bit after the second viewing. I was *not* expecting this to affect me as hard as it did. Wonderful work. Exquisite, even! I'm saddened that I didn't find this until just now.
Listed under: things I didn’t know I wanted to hear in Dan’s voice
I really love that, when the dragon and unicorn get together, Dan has a harmony with his voice. But before and after, it's just one voice. It really adds to the story.
Damn, didn't even notice. This is awesome!
I missed that, this just makes it all the more amazing to me.
I have seen this probably 100 times, and I don't think I've ever managed to not weep at the end even once.
I don't know why but sometimes i feel like i need to hear this song and see the animation, but when i do, it just makes me cry, everytime
That confusion and despair on dragon's face when it was dying broke my heart. Makes me kinda hate those unicorns
Yes same!!!
For a split second.. she searches for him. To be by her side. To not be alone in that second of death.
I love it. And hate it at the same time.
@@shuhnelkuh how do you know their genders?
@@pasteldreams5413 I don't. Just how I viewed it
@@pasteldreams5413 because relationship between female and male is the most common in the world, that's why she viewed it that way, don't u have common sense?
@@rizkymubaroq3025 I don't think that's quite right. The dragon reads as female and the unicorn as male to me due to the way they're drawn, not because there 'has' to be a male and a female.
My favourite detail in this video is the unicorn's intentions as he went to grab the two plants they presented to each other when they first met. He couldn't even close his eyes to sleep he was so enamoured with her. It almost felt as though he went to pick the plants to grow them together to show their union, how their souls were entwined, and how they could continue to grow together.
The sad irony being that after it all they're left in memorium instead just really hurts my heart.
The fact that this rendition shares an even cut of true love and heart wrenching pain really makes me feel, and I appreciate it.
A dragon soulbonding isn't the same after that Rick & Morty episode
