It makes me very sad that nobody mentioned how well the animation flows with the song. It's clear a lot of effort was put into the animation and how it matches the song. Even if I'm a couple years late, that doesn't mean I appreciate this video any less.
Thank you! I was going to comment this myself. The song and animation match so perfectly which is honestly rather rare for most animatics. With most you could replace it with different music without much difference, here it would heavily impact the video.
I know why the devil has a compass eye! WWAAAAYYY back when the first compass first created sailors thought it was associated with the devil and convicted themselves it was deadly and you couldn’t trust it. HOPE SOMEONE SEES THIS!

My theory is that the first train was a test illusion, created by the devil herself. The dog who kicked Steban after he jumped on it was so greedy that he wouldn't even let another dog be free from the curse. His greed lead him to his eternal doom, since his train seemed to turn, while Steban's train kept going straight. The train doesn't stop in the town because the devil's curse on the town makes it invisible to trains, since there's no train station in the town either way. Since Steban didn't get on the doom train, he managed to actually see the train that would free him, and he chased after it. Not with greed, but with desperation. He would have helped another dog get on if there was one, since he's not greedy. And his train kept going straight. It didn't turn like the other train, so it actually took him to freedom

Is it odd that at the beginning where the 2 dogs communicate, I can easily know what kind of voices they have? The dog who warned the traveller had a mild husky voice while the traveller sounded like a young Midwestern folk, well that's how I hear them speak-

Coming back after 5 years. This is all I can think about when I hear this song because it fits so well. An old western-style town cursed by the devil, trapping wandering travellers who, if they’re lucky enough to leave, wonder if they just needed “more shut eye.” Not to mention the composition is great. The shots of Steban running through the town and then the transition to him earlier in the song running after the train was really smooth. After going into art in college, I have a whole new appreciation of this than I did 5 years ago.

That is true. A new kid came into my school one day and I told her that she made a mistake coming here because I said the principal ate kids like her for lunch! Now she is 8yrs old and she knows the truth, but that was a pretty funny prank I pulled on her. My friends and I still talk about it today. The principal knew that the kid thought that she ate kids like that girl, but she never found out who told the girl that. My friends laugh everytime we saw her. That happened 3yrs ago and I have transferred to another school and I STILL remember the principal's stupidity. So, I relate to this comment.👌
I think it's cool how you can see posters of missing dogs at the wall at 0:17 and the next thing you see is those dogs sitting there and playing cards.
SPOILER ALERT first train was likely an illusion. in fact, i don’t think a single person has ever actually caught the train and left before. the devil is hunting/trailing him in the comic. its gives a sense of possessiveness and pridefulness you wouldn’t expect if people just slipped through her .. paws .. all the time. like either she is royally pissed he escaped because it hurts her ego or whatever she is doing makes every single soul incredibly valuable. now that i think about it, the former. i mean hunting is excessive, and i highly doubt she can be in multiple places at once. she’s missing out on “prey”. PLUS they said the last time someone went missing was a year ago. the state of oddwind suggests mists were previously extremely frequent, leading half of it to fall into a ghost town. untouched and abandoned by the speculation of bad luck or grief. he very well may be the reason why everyone has been safe. i bet now that he has returned, someone will go missing again. unfortunately the hotel owner’s son seems likely, setting up a date for characters that aren’t even secondary is setting up an event.

2:32 OOOOMMMGGGGGGGG I let out a HUGE breath I was holding!!!!! GODDAMN!!!!!!! SKAILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DUDE!!!!! This had me SOOOOO hooked!!!!!! Felt like I was watching a movie; the usage of the two tone palettes, I felt like I was there. I felt the suspense and eeriness of the place. I felt the fear and adrenaline of the character as he was trying to catch the train before being stuck with that thing. 1000%%%%% WELL DONE!!!! WOW!!!!

Theory Time! The compass in her eye doesn't have anything of a needle, right? So, you can't tell where north is. Even if it did, however, how would that work? It'd have to be upright, of course. Yet still, it doesn't have any resemblance of a needle. So, you can't find north. No telling of East, South, and West, either. That means they're lost. There's no telling where they are. I'm late, I know.
I was obsessed with this in like 4th grade. I’m now in highschool and I still think about it sometimes. The scene where they all sprint after the train is a really powerful scene that has definitely stuck with me!
Here’s my theory of this whole thing: So. The devil is trying to lure in desperate wolves/dogs in the desert into her town (for water, rest, etc), which is actually just an illusion made by her, and isn’t actually real. She lures them in, and that one dog that was talking to the wolf, the one that was saying to catch the train, was actually under control of the devil, which could be why he has a very blank expression. She is telling him through the dog to catch the train which is actually also an illusion by her, which is why you can see she doesn’t even try to stop the dogs from going to that train. She lures them to the train illusion and gets their souls like that. Then, later, the real train comes. Again the wolf runs to it, but this time the devil actually tries to stop him and lure him back to the town, so this time it’s not an illusion like the last one. The train doesn’t stop, possibly because the driver can’t even see the town, maybe because the illusion isn’t meant to be seen by him, so he doesn’t even see it, as it’s only for the desperate animals. The wolf gets on the train, and as he gets farther away, the town disappears because it was all just an illusion... I’m not really sure about the devil’s compass eye, it could possibly be to somehow tell the animals about the direction of the town but without them knowing that their being “told”.. But yeah. Sorry it was long, but that’s me theory :)

My theory is the train is life and life never stops for anyone, the town is the forgotten place where the dead go, the red wolf with the compass eye is death waiting for souls to take from hopeless, weary of life dogs that stray there and to escape is to catch the train which is life
As for the compass eye, I think that it maybe able to mess with an unwary mind and lead them to the town where she then harvests their souls since a compass deals with direction.

So basically this is what I think. The reason the animation is played to the song ''Shut eye'' is because the train doesn't stop because the town doesn't actually exist. Its just an illusion by the devil. And the reason most travellers can see it is because they are tired. The tireder they are, the easier they are to trick. Thats why at the start the devil says ''better heads need shut eye''. Correct me if i'm wrong but thats what I think is going on.

HOLY SHIT I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND THIS AGAIN!! I saw it completely by chance as a kid and thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen in my life, watched it so many times it got stuck in my head every now and then for years after. Last year I found the song on its own organically, got super into stealing sheep, and after watching one of their gigs on youtube I've suddenly gotten recommended it!! OH GOSH OK FIRST I WANT TO SAY I LOVE THIS SO MUCH; You can tell there was months of love in this and it came out beautiful! I like to interpret this as Steban outrunning either his own personal fears and mentality (trying to run from something he did in his past and regrets) OR outrunning consequences he created for himself (causing trouble by accident and facing death itself). All in all, this animatic is a huge inspiration and I love seeing your work!!!

I love the video, but I'm a little interested in the devil. Is there a story behind her compass eye? I think its really neat with or without a story behind it, but I tried to see if there was lore about compass eyes and couldn't find anything.

This is awesome! I went to an animation camp that was near my house and they used this as an example of a Animatic! Everyone loved it and we watched it on the last day we were there twice! Anyway, this is amazing! The run cycle is on point, you can see the weight of a character, the expressions are amazing! Everything looks so real! The movements, the smoke moving, and the run cycle! I know I’m quite late to the party, but I would love to share my theory on this, so here it goes- Some of this will also come from the comic, which isn’t finished yet, so I may change this later on as more is added :3 The Devil preys on tired travelers by creating an illusion town, which is only visible to her victim. The travelers are so tired, hungry, or thirsty that they will walk into the town, and that’s when their souls are doomed. The Devil will make everyone believe they are trapped in the town, and then will make deals with them in exchange for their souls. The citizens in the town are all illusions of her previous victims, and are not real, which is backed up by the missing posters on the wall. In both the comic and the animatic, the missing posters are for the dogs sitting at the table, which I believe means that their soul was taken and they went “missing”. She uses them as illusions to make Steban believe he is trapped in the town, and he must take the train to get out. However, this train is also an illusion. When the illusion dog kicks Steban away, it makes him believe he is trapped there forever, and that’s when the Devil attempts to take his soul. She offers him a better life, she says she will take him to a place where he can live his happiest life and leave his troubles behind. My prediction is that he will say yes, and the Devil’s compass eye means that she is in the process of taking his soul, and that’s when the real train passes by. Steban runs away and catches the train, leaving the Devil behind, and she disappears, along with the town, which will return for its next victim.
I know I'm late, but is it just me or do the missing dogs on the posters not seem to match the dogs at the table (the poster dogs have pointy ears)? Plus, if the whole town was an illusion, why would she even let the posters be there? I think that it's a real town, and agree the first train is an illusion, leading the victims to their death. I agree that she probably offers a better life and says he can make a name for himself there, but then the real train goes by. However, I think that the reason why the town disappears afterwards is because she makes it invisible to the train (which is why it doesn't stop) and when he got on it, the illusion affected him too (the illusion that makes the town invisible).
My Theory on the Devils Eye Her eye brings in desperate dogs, and slowly lures them into her illusion(the town). When they miss the train she lures them to her and tries to trick them to give her their souls in which will trap them in the barrier she put over her illusion. When they refuse or try to escape she uses a the power in her eye(the red smoke) to bring them to her against their will and take their souls. She can only take souls once they miss the train, and also another one is the red smoke can only go to the barrier and can’t go any further, hence why the smoke went away when he go to far. Also my theory on the town Once they lose their souls they become part of the illusion, and the minute you are out of the barrier around the illusion, it goes away. Hence the reason it disappeared at the end. Also I believe only the strong willed or ones that want to really live cannot get their souls taken. When he saw the train he took his chance everyone else were to gullible and desperate to even do anything. They were weak minded.
I've re-watched this video so many times my phone died. Then I recharged it. Then it died again because I wouldn't stop replaying this video! Keep up the amazing work my friend, you're art is fantastic.
I would love to see a whole story for this. Like how and/or why the devil chose this town. Why the main pup came and flesh out the story a bit. Maybe even have him come back and save the town. It's an interesting story in my opinion.
I feel the color changes mean something, blue in the bar, orange outside, and red/blue when the devils around, but I haven't quite figured out what it is yet.
OnionIsKing red is a warm colour and there is a devil and the devil is in hell and hell has fire and fire is *warm* or hot or maybe it's to show danger or maybe to join the lyrics "you should've got out of the red" I dunno the lyrics though
I remember finding Skailla years ago. From this very video. This animatic, her other beautiful works of art, gave me so much insparation. Coming back to it now, years later, really shows me how much her artwork had an affect on me. It's brilliant.
I literally cannot stop watching this! Great job on this, Skailla. I love your use of different colors to set the mood and so you can kinda tell what time of day it is in each shot. My favorite part has to be when all of the dogs are running for the train, I love that poor little dog in the back TwT

You know. I absolutely love all the earthy colours of everything, the cool colours of the inside of the saloon safe from the Sun and the red when the devil enters the frame... It's just... Oh man. I can't describe how much I love this.
This is probably the most creative and beautiful animatic I've seen in awhile. Being an animator myself I understand how big of a pain it can be to add enough frames to make an animation clean but if I would have to suggest something I would suggest to add more frames for a more clean look. The music sat with the video perfectly and your OC is very well done and cute. I also liked the simple colour scheme and a few stray lines (I believe those were intentional) I thought they really suited this animation and scene.

first train was likely an illusion. in fact, i don’t think a single person has ever actually caught the train and left before. the devil is hunting/trailing him in the comic. its gives a sense of possessiveness and pridefulness you wouldn’t expect if people just slipped through her .. paws .. all the time. like either she is royally pissed he escaped because it hurts her ego or whatever she is doing makes every single soul incredibly valuable. now that i think about it, the former. i mean hunting is excessive, and i highly doubt she can be in multiple places at once. she’s missing out on “prey”. PLUS they said the last time someone went missing was a year ago. the state of oddwind suggests mists were previously extremely frequent, leading half of it to fall into a ghost town. untouched and abandoned by the speculation of bad luck or grief. he very well may be the reason why everyone has been safe. i bet now that he has returned, someone will go missing again. unfortunately the hotel owner’s son seems likely, setting up a date for characters that aren’t even secondary is setting up an event.

Theory Time! The compass in her eye doesn't have anything of a needle, right? So, you can't tell where north is. Even if it did, however, how would that work? It'd have to be upright, of course. Yet still, it doesn't have any resemblance of a needle. So, you can't find north. No telling of East, South, and West, either. That means they're lost. There's no telling where they are.

I was obsessed with this in like 4th grade. I’m now in highschool and I still think about it sometimes. The scene where they all sprint after the train is a really powerful scene that has definitely stuck with me!
Here’s my theory of this whole thing:
So. The devil is trying to lure in desperate wolves/dogs in the desert into her town (for water, rest, etc), which is actually just an illusion made by her, and isn’t actually real. She lures them in, and that one dog that was talking to the wolf, the one that was saying to catch the train, was actually under control of the devil, which could be why he has a very blank expression. She is telling him through the dog to catch the train which is actually also an illusion by her, which is why you can see she doesn’t even try to stop the dogs from going to that train. She lures them to the train illusion and gets their souls like that. Then, later, the real train comes. Again the wolf runs to it, but this time the devil actually tries to stop him and lure him back to the town, so this time it’s not an illusion like the last one. The train doesn’t stop, possibly because the driver can’t even see the town, maybe because the illusion isn’t meant to be seen by him, so he doesn’t even see it, as it’s only for the desperate animals. The wolf gets on the train, and as he gets farther away, the town disappears because it was all just an illusion...
I’m not really sure about the devil’s compass eye, it could possibly be to somehow tell the animals about the direction of the town but without them knowing that their being “told”..
But yeah. Sorry it was long, but that’s me theory :)

So basically this is what I think. The reason the animation is played to the song ''Shut eye'' is because the train doesn't stop because the town doesn't actually exist. Its just an illusion by the devil. And the reason most travellers can see it is because they are tired. The tireder they are, the easier they are to trick. Thats why at the start the devil says ''better heads need shut eye''. Correct me if i'm wrong but thats what I think is going on.

I like to interpret this as Steban outrunning either his own personal fears and mentality (trying to run from something he did in his past and regrets) OR outrunning consequences he created for himself (causing trouble by accident and facing death itself). I know I’m quite late to the party, but I would love to share my theory on this, so here it goes-
Some of this will also come from the comic, which isn’t finished yet, so I may change this later on as more is added :3
The Devil preys on tired travelers by creating an illusion town, which is only visible to her victim. The travelers are so tired, hungry, or thirsty that they will walk into the town, and that’s when their souls are doomed. The Devil will make everyone believe they are trapped in the town, and then will make deals with them in exchange for their souls. The citizens in the town are all illusions of her previous victims, and are not real, which is backed up by the missing posters on the wall. In both the comic and the animatic, the missing posters are for the dogs sitting at the table, which I believe means that their soul was taken and they went “missing”. She uses them as illusions to make Steban believe he is trapped in the town, and he must take the train to get out. However, this train is also an illusion. When the illusion dog kicks Steban away, it makes him believe he is trapped there forever, and that’s when the Devil attempts to take his soul. She offers him a better life, she says she will take him to a place where he can live his happiest life and leave his troubles behind. My prediction is that he will say yes, and the Devil’s compass eye means that she is in the process of taking his soul, and that’s when the real train passes by. Steban runs away and catches the train, leaving the Devil behind, and she disappears, along with the town, which will return for its next victim.

I know I'm late, but is it just me or do the missing dogs on the posters not seem to match the dogs at the table (the poster dogs have pointy ears)? Plus, if the whole town was an illusion, why would she even let the posters be there? I think that it's a real town, and agree the first train is an illusion, leading the victims to their death. I agree that she probably offers a better life and says he can make a name for himself there, but then the real train goes by. However, I think that the reason why the town disappears afterwards is because she makes it invisible to the train (which is why it doesn't stop) and when he got on it, the illusion affected him too (the illusion that makes the town invisible).
My Theory on the Devils Eye
Her eye brings in desperate dogs, and slowly lures them into her illusion(the town). When they miss the train she lures them to her and tries to trick them to give her their souls in which will trap them in the barrier she put over her illusion. When they refuse or try to escape she uses a the power in her eye(the red smoke) to bring them to her against their will and take their souls. She can only take souls once they miss the train, and also another one is the red smoke can only go to the barrier and can’t go any further, hence why the smoke went away when he go to far.
Also my theory on the town
Once they lose their souls they become part of the illusion, and the minute you are out of the barrier around the illusion, it goes away. Hence the reason it disappeared at the end.
Also I believe only the strong willed or ones that want to really live cannot get their souls taken. When he saw the train he took his chance everyone else were to gullible and desperate to even do anything. They were weak minded.

You know. I absolutely love all the earthy colours of everything, the cool colours of the inside of the saloon safe from the Sun and the red when the devil enters the frame... It's just... Oh man. I can't describe how much I love this.

This is probably the most creative and beautiful animatic I've seen in awhile. Being an animator myself I understand how big of a pain it can be to add enough frames to make an animation clean but if I would have to suggest something I would suggest to add more frames for a more clean look. The music sat with the video perfectly and your OC is very well done and cute. I also liked the simple colour scheme and a few stray lines (I believe those were intentional) I thought they really suited this animation and scene.
I'm not trying to rant or any thing but it's an animatic so it will be simpler and have less frames

For everyone who replied. I know that animatics are suppose to be fairly messy. All I was trying to state was that the animator has great potential.
