Aside from explicitly featuring the sexual abuse of a minor, the game has a very obvious BDSM motif. Those things are fine if they're handled appropriately (it seems like they were) but it's not like the journalists fabricated the existence of sexual themes in the game. Inciting a moral panic is always an incredibly scummy thing to do, mind you, but I don't think it's fair to imply that the journalists are pedos. Just vultures.

The game shows themes of SA of children so they are really telling on themselves in my opinion. Who the fuck sees two primary school girls rubbing their noses together and see "erothic themes" there?

    • @Chaosqueenngami
      @Chaosqueenngami Місяць тому +66

@@connerhansen2947 I agree about the sexual themes in the game but the context some of the journalists were using was gross. Media can include sexual themes but not be considered sexy. It can be used to discomfort or horrify, which is what Rule of Rose was going for. Some weirdos looked at the game and said this is going to turn people on, which is concerning if someone can see what happens in the game and come away with that interpretation.

    • @Nameless-ny8nk
      @Nameless-ny8nk Місяць тому +21

@@connerhansen2947I get your point, but the criticisms the game received were about people saying that you as the main character get to do stuff with kids in the game wich is completely false and not even implied anywhere in the game, the sexual abuse is also not explicit, the most explicit thing you see is a girl cleaning the floor and the headmaster of the orphanage standing in front of her (wich makes it look like she's doing something to him), the journalists sound like perverts because they sexualized stuff that isn't meant to be seen that way. Think about it, what normal person sees two children rubbing their noses together as something sexual, and then writes about it expecting other people to agree?, even if they were desperately trying to smear the games reputation I feel like you need to be a very specific type of person to even be able yo interpret some of the scenes they point out as sexual, they don't even focus on the BDSM angle of things much.

Finding two kids rubbing noses as sexual says more about the ones perceiving it that way than the creators of the game and those who enjoy the game.
An Eskimo kiss is the term used for rubbing noses. Mostly, it's loosely based on the Inuit tradition of something called a kunik. It's a form of affection for family members and close loved ones. Inherently - non sexual. And just a fun form of affection for someone else.

Considering the events in the game are kind of like a dream, I don't think it's that strange (in hind sight) that Jennifer faints so much. I mean, in my experience dream events cut in and out all the time, the 'fainting' is probably like the brain trying to come up with a new scene from her tattered memories.
P.S. I LOVE Fatal Frame! The lore in the series is so deep and intense that I always wished I could find a deep-dive story summary for any one game, let alone the entire series. I look forward to new content!

I mean, as someone who's tried to explain my wacky dreams to my boyfriend several times before, I'm like..."I remember the my random baby being able to project his coo's and babbles into my brain and me understanding him like he was speaking English...but where did the random MMO battle come from or HOW did I get there and become so OP in the first place?!"

I couldn't bring myself to get rid of ANY games/consoles/accessories. I was going through my storage a couple of days ago and pulled this out for nostalgic reasons... I had no idea it was a rare collector's item! (And mine is complete in box with registration in near mint condition.) Back when I bought it, no one I knew had ever played or even heard of this game - and now it's sought after. Crazy!

As this game is the best example of "Lord of the Flies, but with girls," perhaps the game's story could be integrated into curriculums (maybe college, bit heavy for high school; although heaviness doesn't stop some teachers), and a remaster could bring the game into a more receptive spotlight.

I remember when I saw this in a shop and got curious at the peculiar cover, back when that was a thing. No swords, no sorcery, no dragons, no dungeons--just a flowers and little girls, and the outline was something unheard to me. I judged it as a "horror" game and left it, because I suck at horror games. Had I discovered this when I was older, and if it didn't handle like crap, I probably would've played it.
I actually find violent video games quite therapeutic; they help me deal with my anger in a controlled and safe manner. Anger caused by others constantly trying to think for me and tell me what I'm supposed to find acceptable. Caused by the world rotting around me, thanks to the same brand of people running it into the ground as they pretend they're saving it.
Censorship is evil; and I'm thankful that despite living in a religious country, there was never any enforcement body for video games.

Rule of Rose is a tragic story about orphan children trying to navigate cruel world around them, while being left to tend to themselves, because all adults around them either uncaring or abusive.
This is probably the best game when it comes to portraying children, in all their cruelty, while remaining sympathetic to their trauma and struggles. Kid there do some truly terrible thing, but they do that out of desperation and frustration.
For example Diana acts inappropriately at times, only because she is targeted by a predator.
Wendy did a lot of horrible things, because she loved Jenifer, but couldn’t process her love due to young age and trauma of being an orphan. So she’s jealous when Jenifer stops their little game of Prince and Princess to spend more time with her new pet Brown. Wendy probably never had any family, so for her to “loose” Jenifer must feel like the end of the world.
So, generally, amazing story, well crafted, dark themes not used for shock value, but addresses with care. A ton of actually good written female characters in leading cast.
I love this game. I hope it gets remaster one day. ❤

Apparently I’ve got a lot to say: those girls doing nose kisses is so normal to me. It’s what I did with my siblings and even good friends!
I think some people don’t know how children interact sometimes, and then they overreact.
I have more to say, sorry guys: so I think that this game got the treatment that that old game got. The one where it’s a man and he’s a “serial k1ller”, and he has to take out people that the voices tell him. And people IRL said that it would make people violent.
I think this game got the same treatment, which is wrong. Video games don’t mimic reality, just like books don’t. It’s a fantastical experience that can be troubling, but also eye opening.
I hope it makes sense what I typed, I get very invested in things like this.

I hate games like these where fighting the boss gives you the bad ending, like why does killing the bosses, aka your trauma or fear, lead to the character not coming to terms with what source of the trauma, like they straight defeated it in a boss battle, if that ain't getting you over your trauma, nothing will.

I just replayed Crackdown 2using backwards compat and I feel like there is a really interesting story behind what the game shows you if you findall the audio logs but its quite confusing and you are great at helping clear stuff up.

I was thinking when you said you were on a hunt to play and cover rare older games, I definitely think you’ll like ObsCure and ObsCure The Aftermath. They’re not that special and the stories are that in depth, but I think you’d like them, especially if you like Resident Evil. And luckily they are on Steam now, so it’s easier to play them than they once were (though Aftermath has some bugs during boss battles, so I’d watch out with that one).

this is one of the examples of game reviews that is not taken seriously and the journalist did not even consider playing the game first. Honestly, journalists should not be allowed to review games coz they do not really take time to play the game to give some serious honest article, it even costs the jobs of the devs who created the game. Did more damage than help, should've sued the journalist as well.

The 'moral outrage' surrounding Grand Theft Auto was completely generated by the Grand Theft Auto marketing team. It was designed to get kids to buy the game - and it worked. Read all about it in the great book 'Trust me, I'm lying" by the guy that helped do it.

Senators in US were up in arms over Mortal Kombat 1. SNES release no blood. Sega Genesis MK1 required a code to make the "sweat" red. I play Hitman and think would the developers been on death row for creating it back then.

    A LOVE SUICIDE
    Rule of Rose Main Theme
    Lyrics:
    Say where is my shame
    When I call your name?
So please don't set me free
I'm as heavy as can be
    I will do you harm
    I will break my arm
I'm a victim of your charms
    I want to be dead
    When I am, I lament
    I can be so mean
    You can beat me
I would like to shame you
I would like to blame you
Just because of my love to you
And love itself is just as innocent as roses in May
I know nothing can drive it away
Though love itself is just as brief as a candle in the wind
And it's greedy just like sin
    Alone but sane
    I am a love suicide
'Cause love itself is just as brief as a candle in the wind
It is pure white just like sin
    Alone but sane
    I am a love suicide
'Cause love itself is just as innocent as roses in May
It is pure white just like sin
