I was at that game. The match was on the way to an early finish and Cairns came out and decided to have some fun. Even Aussie fans were cheering and were disappointed when he got out
what makes this innings more amazing was the boundries of the mcg were all the way to the fence back then, not like they are now, has to be some of the bigest hitting the mcg has ever seen.
wow! Nonchalant, giant sixes at a huge ground. Honestly think Lance and Chris Cairns were the biggest hitters in modern cricket history. There are plenty of other six-smashers but nobody has quite matched the meaty casualneess and sheer size of the sixes these two hit
I think this was the first game that Australia ever got 300 in a 50 over one-day game including a magnificent straight 6 by Ken Macleay. This innings by Lance Cairns was something else. Remember watching it on the little 12 inch TV in the backyard.
Remember this one. NZ were down and out when Cairns let rip. This was an absolute wonder of an innings with the 6 sixes that long preceded the mass six hitting we have today.
Bittersweet for NZ. We should have won that series and were on top during the 15 match preliminary round but Hadlee got injured on the eve of the finals won 2-0 by Australia. I remember cheering for Cairns but feeling sick that our dream was over with such a hiding. Losing by 149 runs in this second final was a travesty and pretty distressing to watch. Australia scored a record 302-8 and NZ was 6-44 when Cairns came to the wicket.
Great innings by Lance but a terrible game in context for NZ. It was a big thing in those days, winning the World Series Cup, especially considering this was NZ's first series back in Australia since the 'underarm' in 1980/81. NZ went into the 1982/83 WSC finals as favourites, winning the preliminary round of 15 matches with Australia and England, with several memorable victories. However, losing Richard Hadlee to a hamstring injury on the eve of the finals was a disaster. We got thrashed.
I remember, a sign in the ground saying “New Zealand is up shit creek without their Paddles” We approached the chase like it was a test match. I often wonder what Brendan McCullum and his boys would have made of this chase!
@IanGorton Back in 82 thd boundries of the MCG extended all the way to the fences, now the rope is alot of metres in from the fences, which makes cairn's sixes so much more an effort to now.
That Bouncer from Lilliee set up this quickfire innings.. Amazing what pressure does to a batsmen, they try to play carefully and sensibly but when they have nothing to loose, as in this case, they out perform. Lance could have been the first to score the 40 ball fastest hundred! which Afridi and Jaysurya did in the 90s.
I assume that was his average strike rate over the entire series, which still seems awfully low for him! I hardly remember any innings where he scored less than a run a ball.
I can't believe they took that muppet Ken Macleay to the World Cup after this flogging. As for Lillee, it was great seeing him get belted. I wonder if Kim Hughes went up to him afterwards and said "Well bowled Dennis".
This was hilarious. NZ were getting absolutely thrashed and Cairns obviously thought "why not?". heaps of cricket bats at NZ schools the next week with the shoulders all cut off 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bill Lawry: "Lance will be hearing bells at the moment- Ding Dong, Ding Dong!" Don't think Ken MacLeay got to play much for Australia after this. Did he even play a single test?

Sir in that era is really positive and good cricket.

One handed six over the longest part of the great MCG, epic. When cricket was clean and every team had character/s.
thats for uploading. this is gold!

@Flagfalls Vintage Billl Lawry in there. Shame they gave the mics to someone else, by the 6th six, Bill would have lost it completely.

Another notable point is he was always standing in his crease .
Legend.

best innings ever
they bowled in his spot didn't they??
@pramboy09 or the postage stamp sized grounds they have in New Zealand
@pramboy09 According to Wikipedia the dimensions are Field dimensions are171 m x 146 m
@IanGorton do u have any idea the size of the boundries of the MCG in 1981 ???
90 metres it looks like
His second 6 was a short am jab lol
31 off 11 balls how in the hell is his strike rate 130?
I assume that was his average strike rate over the entire series, which still seems awfully low for him! I hardly remember any innings where he scored less than a run a ball.
Lance Cairns was not really much of a batsman, although he could certainly hit the ball.
130 test wickets.

when cricket was brilliant
lance was deaf as a door post (near enough) he wasnt hearing bells
cairns wont be hearing bells ring, courtesy of being nearly completely deaf
111 likes its brilliant
As a NZer, I will never fully recover from this drubbing.
Indian commentators want to sound desperately like the aussie, but it mostly turns into comedy
This was hilarious. NZ were getting absolutely thrashed and Cairns obviously thought "why not?".

🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lillee will never bowl bouncer at Lance Cairns
Bill Lawry: "Lance will be hearing bells at the moment- Ding Dong, Ding Dong!"

He played in the '83 World Cup and he took 6 wickets in one of the group games
man rodney hogg was not a happy camper - go the big fella
sounds like you're idealising the past
Rugby v football
@jonoblair75 dunno and I don't care
