He is a male KABUKI actor,Bando Tamasaburo who is known as a living national tresure in Japan. When I saw him at the theatre,I was shocked by the beauty of his silhouette and movement.I am so grateful to live in the same era with this living exquisite art.

Taken from Wikipedia: Woman kabuki actors are rare though there was onnakabuki. The onnakabuki is woman’s kabuki. But women performing kabuki was believed to corrupt public morals. The shogunate prohibited the woman from performing in 1629. And kabuki actors became only the men in 1652. Now the men play both male and a female roles.

It's interesting that women were banned from the English stage at the same time, and for the same reason--hence the all-male casts of Shakespeare's plays during his lifetime

i am fascinated by bando tamasaburo's wigs and costumes. he always come on stage looking so feminine and elegant. i have to get myself some lovely kimonos like that.

he certainly does not move like he's in his 60s. so graceful.

His movements are so elegant and the angles and balance he achieves with minute movement and placement of his body and fan are beautiful. If I could choose an expressive dance of love, it would be this one.

He's so beautiful. His performance chills me. This is a true art form, and I am grateful it has survived so long.

Also, the song is taking part in the pleasure district. The reason why the obi is in the front is because, when a customer came it was easier to undo and redo the obi if it was tied in front.

i do admire how he talks..and the explanation of the movement..like in inabune..how she elegantly turns her head in concern..for she fears that even the grinding of her ink stick would wake the house up..

It is actually a male. In kabuki theatre, all parts are played by males, even female roles, as seen here.

Every moment means something. So dance expert watch closely. A twitch of a finger might suggest a soft breeze or a flick of his eyes would mean suspicion or jealousy

Very nice story line. The dancer's moves were very precise.

@ArisolSpray its been also said that it is represent a married woman "as this was the style of married women to wear" if you see woodblock print, the obi is rarely removed. so the obi means, she is his wife for the night. Liza Dalby had this written somewhere.

I'm sorry you think so. For Shochiku to have paid me for subtitles would have cost them more, and believe me, what they paid for narration was a pittance. And please understand that I translated and narrated everything on my own. I also have over a quarter century's experience. The one thing, of course, that I have learnt from all of that time is that you can never please everyone. - I should add, for these Tamasaburo Buyo-shu DVDs, Tamasaburo himself checked and approved all the English.

Hey, it's not my fault that they included the English. If you think you know everything, or if you think it's not worth knowing... why don't you buy the DVD yourself?
I'm sure you don't need to know anything at all about a foreing culture and the intricate details. You just wanna feel something, right? And you're intelectual ability is numbered in the low 50s, right?

@xxzerawriotxx First off I wasn't talking to you I was talking to mister "Have sex with Kabuki GIRL". Second I have no problem with the way that Kabuki is performed, it IS an art style after all, and a very unique one at that. So please, don't jump down my throat without looking at the whole post...

In the Kabuki world, and on the Kabuki stage, it is only courtesans and "matrons" who tie their obis in front. It had diferent meanings according to the women who wore them. However, in this case we are clearly talking about a courtesan...

Then you should buy the real DVD. Then you would have a choice. I must say that the narrator did not have any choice, nor did he get any money, in this UA-cam appearance. Nor does he want any money at all. It's just that people are so stupid in thinking this UA-cam clip cannot be obtained from regular channels.
